summary Building energy modeling requires skilled labor, and there is a need to make environmental assessments of buildings more efficient and accessible for architects. A building energy model is based on collecting data from the real, physical world and representing them as a digital model. Recent digital photogrammetry tools can reconstruct real-world geometry by transforming photographs into 3D models automatically. However, there is a lack of accessible workflows that utilize this technology for building energy modeling and simulations. This paper presents a novel methodology to generate a building energy model from a photogrammetry-based 3D model using available tools and computer algorithms.

summary In the recent decades, the high-resolution remote sensing, through 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry benefited historic buildings maintenance, conservation, and restoration works. However, the dense surface models (DSM) generated from the data capture have nonstructured features as lack of topology and semantic discretization. The process to create a semantically oriented 3D model from the DSM, using the of Building Information Model technology, is a possibility to integrate historical information about the life cycle of the building to maintain and improving architectural valued building stock to its functional level and safeguarding its outstanding historical value. Our approach relies on an ontology-based system to represent the knowledge related to the building. Our work outlines a model-driven approach based on the hybrid data acquisition, its post-processing, the identification of the building' main features for the parametric modeling, and the development of an ontological map integrated with the BIM model. The methodology proposed was applied to a large-scale industrial historical building, located in Brazil. The DSM were compared, providing a qualitative assessment of the proposed method.

summary The change of the building morphology directly affects the surrounding environment, while the evaluation of these environment data becomes the main basis for the genetic iterations of the building morphology. Indeed, due to the complexity of the outdoor natural ventilation, multiple factors in the site could be the main reasons for the change of air flow. Thus, the architect is suggested to take the wind environment as the main morphology generation factor in the early stage of the building design. Based on the research results of 2017 DigitalFUTURE Wind Tunnel Visualization Workshop, a novel self-form-finding method in design infancy has been proposed. This method uses Arduino to carry out the dynamic design of the building model, which can not only connect the sensor to monitor the wind environment data, but also contribute the building model to correlate with the wind environment data in real time. The integration of the Arduino platform and the physical wind tunnel can create the possibility of continuous and real-time physical changes, data collection and wind environment simulation, using quantitative environmental factors to control building morphology, and finally achieve the harmony among the building, environment and human.

title Machine Learning Approach versus Prediction Formulas to Design Healthy Dwellings in a Cold Climate

summary This paper presents a study about the prediction accuracy of daylight provision and overheating levels in dwellings when considering different methods (machine learning vs prediction formulas), training, and validation data sets. An existing high-rise building located in Tallinn, Estonia was considered to compare the best ML predictive method with novel prediction formulas. The quantification of daylight provision was conducted according to the European daylight standard EN 17037:2018 (based on minimum Daylight Factor (minDF)) and overheating level in terms of the degree-hour (DH) metric included in local regulations. The features included in the dataset are the minDF and DH values related to different combinations of design parameters: window-to-floor ratio, level of obstruction, g-value, and visible transmittance of the glazing system. Different training and validation data sets were obtained from a main data set of 5120 minDF values and 40960 DH values obtained through simulation with Radiance and EnergyPlus, respectively. For each combination of training and validation dataset, the accuracy of the ML model was quantified and compared with the accuracy of the prediction formulas. According to our results, the ML model could provide more accurate minDF/DH predictions than by using the prediction formulas for the same design parameters. However, the amount of room combinations needed to train the machine-learning model is larger than for the calibration of the prediction formulas. The paper discuss in detail the method to use in practice, depending on time and accuracy concerns.

summary This paper describes a study of using immersive virtual reality (VR) technology to analyze user behavior related to wayfinding, and the integration of the technology with the multi-agent simulation and space syntax. Starting with a discussion on the problems of current agent-based simulation (ABS) and space syntax in constructing the micro-level interactions for wayfinding, the author focuses on how the cognitive behavior and spatial knowledge can be achieved with a player controlled avatar in response to other computer controlled agents in a virtual building. This approach starts with defining the proposed Avatar Agent VR system (AAVR), which is used for capturing a player's movement in real time and form the spatial data, then visualizing the data with various representation methods. Combined with space syntax and ABS, AAVR is used to examine various players' wayfinding behaviors related to gender, spatial recognition, and spatial features such as light, sound, material, and other architectural elements.

summary Decisions taken at early stages of building design have a significant effect on the planning steps for the entire lifetime of the project as well as the performance of the building throughout its lifecycle (MacLeamy 2004). Building Information Modelling (BIM) could bring forward and enhance the planning and decision-making processes by enabling the direct reuse of data hold by the model for diverse analysis and simulation tasks (Borrmann et al. 2015). The architect today besides a couple of simplified simulation tools almost exclusively uses his know-how for evaluating and comparing design variants in the early stages of design. This paper focuses on finding new ways to facilitate the use of analytical and simulation tools during the important early phases of conceptual building design, where the models are partially incomplete. The necessary enrichment and proper detailing of the design model could be achieved by means of dialogue-based interaction concepts with analytical and simulation tools through adaptive detailing strategies. This concept is explained using an example scenario for design process. A generic description of the aimed dialog-based interface to various simulation tools will also be discussed in this paper using an example scenario.

summary Combining IoT technology with the BIM paradigm can enhance the data collection that BIM strives for by enabling real-time monitoring of building conditions. This data collection can be used very effectively for managing facilities. However, many IoT devices must be installed in buildings to achieve such results and therefore, a management system is required. The purpose of this study is to suggest an IoT management system that uses the drawing information extracted from a BIM model to allow effective management from initial installation of IoT devices to maintenance. In the pursuit of this purpose, a converter and an IoT device which developed in the research is used. The converter extracts space information and 2D floor drawing from BIM model and the IoT device is developed based on ESP 8266 chip which consist of one computer and WIFI module. To store the data which collected by the IoT devices, IoT service of AWS(Amazon Web Service) is used.

summary The Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology enabled improvement in the design, construction and maintenance stages highly. In the field of existing buildings, including historical assets, this technology has not yet had the same impact. This paper presents a methodology to create an intelligent digital model for an outstanding building from modern architecture in Brazil using multiple reality-based technologies. The fusion of the different point cloud raw data generated a high-resolution Dense Surface Model (DSM), the base of an accurate and detailed parametric Model. This study demonstrated the potential of digital surveying, including low-cost sensors, and BIM for built heritage documentation.

summary This paper presents a computational design approach and novel digital fabrication method for an optimized lightweight concrete slab using a 3D-printed formwork. Smart Slab is the first concrete slab fabricated with a 3D-printed formwork. It is a lightweight concrete slab, displaying three-dimensional geometric differentiation on multiple scales. The optimization of slab systems can have a large impact on buildings: more compact slabs allow for more usable space within the same building volume, refined structural concepts allow for material reduction, and integrated prefabrication can reduce complexity on the construction site. Among the main challenges is that optimized slab geometries are difficult to fabricate in a conventional way because non-standard formworks are very costly. Novel digital fabrication methods such as additive manufacturing of concrete can provide a solution, but until now the material properties and the surface quality only allow for limited applications. The fabrication approach presented here therefore combines the geometric freedom of 3D binderjet printing of formworks with the structural performance of fiber reinforced concrete. Using 3D printing to fabricate sand formwork for concrete, enables the prefabrication of custom concrete slab elements with complex geometric features with great precision. In addition, space for building systems such as sprinklers and Lighting could be integrated in a compact way. The design of the slab is based on a holistic computational model which allows fast design optimization and adaptation, the integration of the planning of the building systems, and the coordination of the multiple fabrication processes involved with an export of all fabrication data. This paper describes the context, design drivers, and digital design process behind the Smart Slab, and then discusses the digital fabrication system used to produce it, focusing on the 3D-printed formwork. It shows that 3D printing is already an attractive alternative for custom formwork solutions, especially when strategically combined with other CNC fabrication methods. Note that smart slab is under construction and images of finished elements can be integrated within couple of weeks.

title A framework for generating and evaluating façade designs using a multi-agent system approach

summary Digital design paradigms in architecture have been rooted in representational models which are geometry centered and therefore fail to capture building complexity holistically. Due to a lack of computational design methodologies, existing digital design workflows do little in predicting design performance in the early design stage and in most cases analysis and design optimization are done after a design is fixed. This work proposes a new computational design methodology, intended for use in the area of conceptual design of building design. The proposed methodology is implemented into a multi-agent system design toolkit which facilitates the generation of design alternatives using stochastic algorithms and their evaluation using multiple environmental performance metrics. The method allows the user to probabilistically explore the solution space by modeling the design parameters’ architectural design components (i.e. façade panel) into modular programming blocks (agents) which interact in a bottom-up fashion. Different problem requirements (i.e. level of daylight inside a space, openings) described into agents’ behavior allow for the coupling of data from different engineering fields (environmental design, structural design) into the a priori formation of architectural geometry. In the presented design experiment, a façade panel is modeled into an agent-based fashion and the multi-agent system toolkit is used to generate and evolve alternative façade panel configurations based on environmental parameters (daylight, energy consumption). The designer can develop the façade panel geometry, design behaviors, and performance criteria to evaluate the design alternatives. The toolkit relies on modular and functionally specific programming modules (agents), which provide a platform for façade design exploration by combining existing three-dimensional modeling and analysis software.

summary This paper proposes a ML-based optimization design workflow based on obstruction angles for the optimization of building facades (i.e. g-value and window width). The optimization output consists of the optimal clustering of windows in order to ensure a desired level of daylight provision according to method 2 defined in the EN17307:2018 (i.e. based on Spatial Daylight Autonomy: sDA) and to not exceed a maximum level of specific cooling capacity (SCC). The independent variables or design parameters of the parametric model are: room orientation/dimensions, window dimensions, and obstruction angle (??). The ML prediction models were trained and tested with reliable simulation results using validate softwares. The total number of room combinations is 61440 for sDA and SCC simulations. The development of reliable (90% of right predictions) ML predictive models based on decision tree technique were calibrated. The optimal clustering of windows was done first by floors and secondly by the designer’s need to homogenize the external facade with similar glazing properties and window sizes, having impact on the annual heating consumption. The proposed method help designers to make accurate and faster design decisions during early design stages and renovation plans.

summary The project aims to investigate the possibility of VR in a combination of visualizing high-dimensional urban data. Our study proposes a data-based tool for urban planners, architects, and researchers to 3D visualize and experience an urban quarter. Users have a possibility to choose a specific part of a city according to urban data input like "buildings, streets, and landscapes". This data-based tool is based on an algorithm to translate data from Shapefiles (.sh) in a form of a virtual cube model. The tool can be scaled and hence applied globally. The goal of the study is to improve understanding of the connection and analysis of high-dimensional urban data beyond a two-dimensional static graph or three-dimensional image. Professionals may find an optimized condition between urban data through abstract simulation. By implementing this tool in the early design process, researchers have an opportunity to develop a new vision for extending and optimizing urban materials.

summary This paper presents a computational approach to generating architectural forms for large spanning structures based on a "paper-cutting" technique. Using this approach, a flat sheet is cut and scored in such a way that a small application of force prompts it to expand into a three-dimensional structure. Our computational system can be used to estimate optimal cutting patterns and to predict the resulting structural characteristics, thereby providing greater rigor to what has previously been an ad-hoc and experimental design approach. To develop the model, we analyzed paper-cutting techniques, extracted the relevant formative parameters, and created a simulation using finite element analysis. We then used a data-mining approach through 400 simulations and applied a regression analysis to create a prediction model. Given a small number of input variables from the designer, this model can rapidly and precisely predict the transformation volume of a paper-cutting pattern. Additional structural characteristics will be modelled in future work. The use of this tool makes paper-cut design approaches more practical by changing a non-systematic, labor-intensive design process into a more precise and efficient one.

summary The paper proposes a computational tool for simulating the users' urban cognitive systems, or more specifically the long-term memory associated with the knowledge of urbanism and its related urban visual features. The tool builds on our comprehensive theory of Urbanism, which presents a monolithic, structured, comprehensive, professional conception of Urbanism based on which any relativistic users' urban conceptions could be predicted as a restructuring of the professional conception. These versatile relativistic conceptions would emerge based on a nurturing environment, which is a conception of the empirical/anthropological collected data of the intended users' reflections against their preferred constructed urban environments. Once the users' conceptions of Urbanism are formulated, which is the first phase of the simulation, the users' impressions against any examined urban constructs are attainable, which is the second phase of the simulation. The two phases, the framework, would be monolithically represented by a proposed novel cellular graph. The proposed computational tool is thought of as a robust technique for the computational incorporation of the users' urban identity, and some of its constituents could be considered as a needed common platform of communication for a successful Human-Computer interaction in the field of urban analysis/design.

summary Although parametric modelling and digital design tools have become ubiquitous in digital design, there is a limited understanding of how designers apply them in their design processes (Yu et al., 2014). This paper looks at the use of GHShot versioning tool developed by the authors (Cristie & Joyce, 2018; 2019) used to capture and track changes and progression of parametric models to understand early-stage design exploration and collaboration empirically. We introduce both development history graph-based metrics (macro-process) and parametric model and geometry change metric (micro-process) as frameworks to explore and understand the captured progression data. These metrics, applied to data collected from three cohorts of classroom collaborative design exercises, exhibited students' distinct modification patterns such as major and complex creation processes or minor parameter explorations. Finally, with the metrics' applicability as an objective language to describe the (collaborative) design process, we recommend using versioning for more data-driven insight into parametric design exploration processes.

summary Architectural designers are currently depending on a multitude of elaborate computational tools in order to explore, manipulate and visualize the geometric form of their building projects. However, if architecture can be perceived as the manipulation of geometric form in direct relation to human activities and events that take place inside it, then it is evident that such design parameters are not sufficiently represented in the currently available modeling software. Would it be possible to introduce the human activity element in the aforementioned computational tools in a way that informs the design process and improves the final building product? This paper attempts to answer this question by introducing a new experimental design tool that enables the creation of parametric human activity envelopes within three-dimensional digital models. The novel approach is that this tool enables the parametric interaction of these components with the actual building geometry and generates novel visual and data representations of the 3D model. The goal is to improve the decision-making process of architects as well as their clients by enabling them to evaluate and iterate their designs based not only on the building's form but also on the human spatial events that take place inside it. A prototype implementation demonstrates the tool's practical application through three design examples.

summary Augmented graphical thinking operates by integrating algorithmic, heuristic, and manufacturing processes. The Representation and Ideation Laboratory (RILAB-2018) exercise begins with the application of a parametric definition developed by the team of teachers, allowing for the construction of structural systems by the means of the combination of segmental shells and bending-active. The main objetive is the construction of a scientific model of simulation for bending-active laminar structures has brought into reality trustworthy previews for architectural envelopes through the interaction of parametrized relational variables. This way we put designers in a strategic role for the building of the pre-analysis models, allowing more preciseness at the time of picking and defining materials, shapes, spaces and technologies and thus minimizing the decisions based solely in the definition of structural typological categories, local tradition or direct experience. The results verify that the strategic integration of models of geometric physical optimization and spatial representation greatly expand the capabilities in the construction of the complex system that operates in the act of projecting architecture.

summary The article presents a methodology applied for the assessment of the tall building visual impact on the city scape, using digital tools. The method has been used by the author in the planning practice in several cities in Poland. It enables to determine not only the visibility range of a planned tall building in the city spaces, but also the extent to which it dominates. Findings are presented in a map which reflects both parameters applicable to a given facility. Computation of findings is based on the model of a city consisting of a regular cloud of points (Digital Surface Model) of high quality and dedicated C++ software (developed in cooperation with author). The Visual Impact Size (VIS) method supports the process of conservation and landscaping, in particular in historical cities. It helps predicting spatial implications tall buildings may have. It may also be used for comprehensive development of a modern skyline with tall buildings as a harmonious component of the cityscape. The method is presented using the case study of the Hanza Tower building in Szczecin (Poland).

summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary The objective of this research project is to simulate and evaluate the effect of movement velocity and cognitive abilities on the visual perception of three groups of urban users: pedestrians, cyclists and car drivers.The simulation and analysis is based on the 3D Dynamic Visual Analysis (DVA) (Fisher-Gewirtzman, 2017). This visibility analysis model was developed in the Rhinoceros and Grasshopper software environments and is based on the conceptual model presented in Fisher-Gewirtzman (2016): a 3D Line of Sight (LOS) visibility analysis, taking into account the integrated effect of the 3D geometry of the environment and the variant elements of the view (such as the sky, trees and vegetation, buildings and building types, roads, water etc.). In this paper, the current advancement of the existing model considers the visual perception of human users employing three types of movement in the urban environment--pedestrians, cyclists and drivers--is explored.We expect this research project to exemplify the contribution of such a quantification and evaluation model to evaluating existing urban structures, and for supporting future human perception-based urban design processes.
