summary This paper argues for alternative methods for the in-situ integration of robotics in architectural construction. Rather than promoting off-site pre-fabrication through industrial robot applications, it advocates for suspended, light-weight, cable-driven robots that allow flexible and safe onsite implementation. This paper uses the topic of large-scale inflatable architectural realisation as a study case to test the application of such a robot, here with a laser-cutter as end-effecter. This preliminary study covers the design, development, prototyping, and practical testing of an inherently scale-less cable-driven laser-cutter setup. This setup allows for the non-size specific cutting of inflatable structures' components which can be designed with common physics simulation engines. The developed robotic proof of concept forms the basis for several further and future study possibilities that merge the field of architectural design and implementation with mechanical and automation engineering.

title Artificial intelligence in architecture: Generating conceptual design via deep learning

summary Artificial intelligence, and in particular machine learning, is a fast-emerging field. Research on artificial intelligence focuses mainly on image-, text- and voice-based applications, leading to breakthrough developments in self-driving cars, voice recognition algorithms and recommendation systems. In this article, we present the research of an alternative graph- based machine learning system that deals with three-dimensional space, which is more structured and combinatorial than images, text or voice. Specifically, we present a function-driven deep learning approach to generate conceptual design. We trained and used deep neural networks to evaluate existing designs encoded as graphs, extract significant building blocks as subgraphs and merge them into new compositions. Finally, we explored the application of generative adversarial networks to generate entirely new and unique designs.

summary Generative systems have a significant potential to synthesize innovative design alternatives. Still, most of the common systems that have been adopted in design require the designer to explicitly define the specifications of the procedures and in some cases the design space. In contrast, a generative system could potentially learn both aspects through processing a database of existing solutions without the supervision of the designer. To explore this possibility, we review recent advancements of generative models in machine learning and current applications of learning techniques in design. Then, we describe the development of a data-driven generative system titled DeepCloud. It combines an autoencoder architecture for point clouds with a web-based interface and analog input devices to provide an intuitive experience for data-driven generation of design alternatives. We delineate the implementation of two prototypes of DeepCloud, their contributions, and potentials for generative design.

summary The paper aims to address methods of creating a system for design through material studies that are employed as feedback on a computational digital model. The case study described in this paper is the output of an exploration that has investigated physical transformation, interaction and wood materiality over the period of two weeks of the international architecture programme AA Athens Visiting School in Greece. Real-time performative form-responsive methods based on bending and stretching have been developed and simulated in an open-source programming environment. The output of the simulation has been informed by the results of material tests that took place in parallel and have served as inputs for the fine-tuning of the simulation. Final conclusions were made possible from these explorations that enabled the fabrication of a prototype using wood veneer at one-to-one scale. From a pedagogical aspect, the research main focus is to improve the quality of architectural education by learning through making. This is made possible using advanced computational techniques and coupling them with material studies towards an integrated system for architectural prototypes within a limited time frame.

keywords This research focuses on design-static analysis and environmental assessment procedures that are based on the idea of a flexible kinetic formwork used as the automated mechanism for the production of bricks for porous wall structures. A key aspect of this investigation is the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) analysis study that is applied in order to achieve, in parallel with the automated procedure, the sustainable potential of the products. For this purpose, the design and construction flexibility of the product is taken into account from the early design decision making stage by examining different sizes of bricks under fabrication including massive or porous ones in order to test their design and static performance, aiming to adapt their shape in multiple functional and environmental scenarios. In parallel, the LCA impact of the given design scenarios are taken into consideration, again from the early design phase, and include, among other objectives, material minimization, less environmental impact of building materials and less energy consumption based on the proposed digital fabrication technology. This is examined by comparing digital design and robotic automated results using three types of ecological materials.

keywords This paper presents an ongoing work towards the development of an integrated robotically-driven workflow that can be used for the design, development and subsequent fabrication of small-to large-scale elastic tensile mesh structures. This approach involves digital form-finding and optimization, driven by robotic manufacturing principles and it aims to overcome the limitations of currently available tools, to work either in the design or the fabrication phase of the process. At the same time, it involves the fabrication of systems in several scales followed by respective analyses of results according to the specific type and diameter of the material used. Specifically, form-finding and optimization are responsible for controlling the pretension of the elastic threads, aiming to determine the final tensile mesh and to generate the additive robotic tool-path. In parallel, the type and diameter of the material involved, define the necessary changes of the end-effector tool, which is responsible to implement the process. Despite that design results can be in any scale, for study purposes an experimentation into a small-scale is conducted, to evaluate the suggested automated construction process in general and the end-effector mechanism in particular.

Both supervised and unsupervised learning models will be discussed and different projects will be referred as examples. summary The "digital turn" in architecture is ontologically drawn from Deleuzian philosophy, particularly the thinking defined by Manuel Delanda as real virtuality. This philosophical thinking reflects the essential paradigm of digital design-a generative process driven by intensive difference to approach the singularity of form in a space of possibilities. However, no matter how dynamic the design process is in digital software, the construction result of a building is unavoidably static and permanent. Thus, the essence of digital design will always be misaligned with the material reality of its production. Addressing on this confliction, the research is trying to rethink the philosophical term "real virtuality" in the process of human perception. By examining different theories about the anti-static condition of perception, it forms a novel perspective to address the dynamic relationship between building form, virtual "information" and human perception, and extends the productivity of "becoming" from digital design process to the process of building colonization.

summary Advances in construction automation have primarily focused on creating heavy machines to accomplish repetitive tasks. While this approach is valuable in an assembly-line context, it does not always translate well for the diverse terrain and dynamic nature of construction sites. As a result, the use of automation in the architectural assembly has lagged far behind other industries. To address the challenges of construction-site assembly, this project suggests an alternative technique that uses a fl eet of smaller robots working in parallel. The proposed method, which is inspired by the construction techniques of insect colonies, has several advantages over the use of larger machines. It allows for much greater on-site fl exibility and portability. It is also easy to scale the operation, by adding or removing additional units as needed. The use of multiple small robots provides operational redundancy that can adapt to the loss of any particular machine. These advantages make the technology particularly suitable for construction in hazardous or inaccessible areas. The use of assembly robots also opens new horizons for design creativity, allowing architects to explore new ideas that would be unwieldy and expensive to construct using traditional techniques. In our tests, we used a team of small mobile robots to fold 2D laser-cut stock into 3D curved structures, and then assemble these units into larger interlocked forms.

summary The rapid growth of complex contemporary architecture design, contributed by the advance in parametric CAD/CAM software, is accompanied by challenges in the production process; it demands both highly trained workers and technical equipments. This paper reviews current technologies in robotics-aided construction and wearable computers for generic purposes, and proposes the design of a robotic device for construction guidance. It guides the user, the worker, through the assembly process of precision modular constructions, by providing procedural mechanical or haptic assistance in the 3-dimensional positioning of building components. The device is designed to be wearable, portable, and operable as a completely stand-alone system that requires no external infrastructure. A prototype of the device is tested with a mock-up masonry construction experiment, the result of which is reported in this paper, along with discussion for future improvement and application opportunities within the context of highly developed, condensed Japanese urban environments. A greater objective of this paper is to bridge current studies in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and digital fabrication in architecture and promote the potentials of human workers in future construction scenes.

summary Evolution of natural life and subsequently selection of life forms is an interesting topic that has been explored multiple times. This area of research and its application has high relevance in evolutionary design and automated design generation. Taking inspiration from Charles Darwin's theory, all biological species were formed by the process of evolution based on natural selection of the fittest (Darwin, n.d.) this paper explains exploratory research showcasing semi-automatic design generation. This is realized by an interactive artificial selection tool, where the designer or the end user makes key decisions steering the propagation and breeding of future design artifacts. This paper, describes two prototypes and their use cases, highlighting interaction based optimal design selection. One of the prototypes explains a 2d organic shape creator using a metaball shape approach, while the other discusses a spatial layout generation technique for conceptual design.

summary This paper aims to link the blockchain technology with property issues and in extend architectural design decisions at the urban scale. In an urban design context, this paper investigates the new potentials of urban form connected to the application of the logic of the blockchain to urban design. With this, the article concentrates on the distributed way of sharing information, with no intent to focus on cryptography issues related to the blockchain. Transferring the blockchain's core concepts of data distribution through ledgers, to patterns of shared and private owned spaces it can lead to what we propose as polyphonic spaces, with overlapping uses. Urban realm, designed as a chain, initiates with the binary condition of private and shared but handles it as a way to interact, through nesting, its initial parts. We think that the blockchain theory is capable of challenging architecture by shifting the weight from individual elements of composition to compound entities (block) that incorporate all the information needed.Please write your abstract here by clicking this paragraph.

summary Kinetair is an interactive stairs prototype which could change its appearance according to the surrounding conditions, providing a diversity of functions, such as stairs, exhibition walls, furniture and so on. This research is based on the Interactive Architecture theory, integrating with digital fabrication technology. This paper will illustrate the origin of the concept, the concept development process, the fabrication process and the various possible application of Kinetair. This experiment evokes us to rethink the fundamental meanings of the architecture components in a brand new perspective, and stimulates designers to explore the new features of conventional constructions with cutting-edge technologies.

summary Recent advancements in the realm of additive manufacturing technologies have made it possible to directly manufacture the complex geometries that are resultant from topological optimization and functionally graded material processes. Topological optimization processes are well understood and widely used within the realm of structural engineering and have been increasingly adopted in architectural design and research. However, there has been little research devoted to the topological optimization of cable nets and their fabrication through robotic additive manufacturing. This paper presents a design framework for the optimization of additively manufactured tensile cable nets that attempts to bridge between these two domains by reframing the scale of topological optimization processes. Instead of focusing solely on the topology optimization at the macro-scale of cable nets, this research develops a method to optimize the meso-scale topology and defines metamaterial units with different properties to be aggregated into a complex whole. This reorientation from the formal towards the material domain signals an engagement with morphogenetic modes of design that find formal expression through bottom-up material processes. In order to further investigate the emerging potentials of this reorientation, the presented method is validated through physical deformation tests, as well as applied to the design of a furniture-scale case study project realized through the use of robotic additive manufacturing of elastomeric materials

summary This research investigates the effect of curvature, at a variety of scales, on the acoustic properties of glass. Plate glass, which has predictable and uniform acoustically reflective behavior, can be formed into curved surfaces through a combination of parametrically-driven auxetic pattern generation, CNC water-jet cutting, and controlled heat forming. When curved, plate glass becomes “activated” and complex acoustically-diffusive behavior emerges. The parametrically-driven auxetic perforation pattern allows the curvature to be altered and controlled across a formed pane of glass, and a correlation is demonstrated between the level of curvature and the extent of acoustically diffusive behavior. Beyond individual panels, curved panes can be aggregated to extend acoustic influence to the entire interior room condition, and the pace at which acoustic energy is distributed can be controlled. In this work the parameters surrounding the controlled slumping of glass are described, and room-sized formal and acoustic effects are studied using wave-based acoustic simulation techniques. This paper discusses the early stages of work in progress.

summary Robosense 2.0: Robotic Sensing and Architectural Ceramic Fabrication demonstrates a generative design process based on collaboration between designers, robotic tools, advanced software, and nuanced material behavior. The project employs fabrication tools which are typically used in highly precise and predetermined applications, but uniquely thematizes the unpredictable aspects of these processes as applied to architectural component design. By integrating responsive sensing systems, this paper demonstrates real-time feedback loops which consider the spontaneous agency and intuition of the architect (or craftsperson) rather than the execution of static or predetermined designs. This paper includes new developments in robotics software for architectural design applications, ceramic-deposition 3D printing, sensing systems, materially-driven pattern design, and techniques with roots in the arts and crafts. Considering the increasing accessibility and advancement of 3D printing and robotic technologies, this project seeks to challenge the erasure of materiality: when mistakes or accidents caused by inconsistencies in natural material are avoided or intentionally hidden. Instead, the incorporation of material and user-input data yields designs which are imbued with more nuanced traces of making. This paper suggests the potential for architects and craftspeople to maintain a more direct and active relationship with the production of their designs.

summary Although parametric modelling and digital design tools have become ubiquitous in digital design, there is a limited understanding of how designers apply them in their design processes (Yu et al., 2014). This paper looks at the use of GHShot versioning tool developed by the authors (Cristie & Joyce, 2018; 2019) used to capture and track changes and progression of parametric models to understand early-stage design exploration and collaboration empirically. We introduce both development history graph-based metrics (macro-process) and parametric model and geometry change metric (micro-process) as frameworks to explore and understand the captured progression data. These metrics, applied to data collected from three cohorts of classroom collaborative design exercises, exhibited students' distinct modification patterns such as major and complex creation processes or minor parameter explorations. Finally, with the metrics' applicability as an objective language to describe the (collaborative) design process, we recommend using versioning for more data-driven insight into parametric design exploration processes.

summary Daylight standards are one of the main factors for the shape and image of cities. With urbanization and ongoing densification of cities, new planning regulations are emerging in order to manage access to sun light. In Estonia a daylight standard defines the rights of light for existing buildings and the direct solar access requirement for new premises. The solar envelope method and environmental simulations to compute direct sun light hours on building façades can be used to design buildings that respect both daylight requirements. However, no existing tool integrates both methods in an easy to use manner. Further, the assessment of façade performance needs to be related to the design of interior layouts and of building clusters to be meaningful to architects. Hence, the present work presents a computational design workflow for the evaluation and optimisation of high density building clusters in urban environments in relation to direct solar access requirements and selected types of floor plans.

summary In the recent decades, the high-resolution remote sensing, through 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry benefited historic buildings maintenance, conservation, and restoration works. However, the dense surface models (DSM) generated from the data capture have nonstructured features as lack of topology and semantic discretization. The process to create a semantically oriented 3D model from the DSM, using the of Building Information Model technology, is a possibility to integrate historical information about the life cycle of the building to maintain and improving architectural valued building stock to its functional level and safeguarding its outstanding historical value. Our approach relies on an ontology-based system to represent the knowledge related to the building. Our work outlines a model-driven approach based on the hybrid data acquisition, its post-processing, the identification of the building' main features for the parametric modeling, and the development of an ontological map integrated with the BIM model. The methodology proposed was applied to a large-scale industrial historical building, located in Brazil. The DSM were compared, providing a qualitative assessment of the proposed method.

summary Nature is always full of patterns inspiring all the disciplines and especially architecture in many ways. Currently, with the advances in technology and growing interest towards nature-driven studies, retrieving information from nature has a new connotation in scales and dimensions including both living and non-living beings. In this study, it is aimed to explore the scales of nature from Nano to Macro and a holistic approach is embraced to cope with the complexity of nature and architecture. To understand these complexities, patterns in different forms and scales serve as valuable tools to decode and recode information from one domain to another through locating the order and how patterns exist in different and changing environments with respect to forces and the urge of the existence of the being.This research focuses on the behavior of crystal formation which can be observed both in biotic and abiotic nature to understand the order generating the patterns in nature and its adaptation into a different and changing environment. This information of crystallization has great potential for architecture in terms of spatial structures, new materials and introducing a novel lattice for freeform structures. In this study, the potentials, limits and possible contributions of crystal formation are stated for architecture in the search of symmetry and patterns.
