summary Innovation incubator is an emerging kind of office space which focuses on promoting social interaction in the space. From the perspective of environmental behavior, the complex relationship between a particular space form and the social interactions is well worth exploring. Based on Wi-Fi positioning data, this paper examined the spatial and temporal behavior in innovation incubators. Using the interdisciplinary social networks analysis, this paper further analyzed the social interactions in this space, mining out social structures such as gathering and community, and analyzing the relationship between these structures and spaces. The result shows that human behavior in innovation incubators has some interesting characteristics, and the social structures are closely linked with the functional area of innovation incubator. This paper provides a new perspective and introduces interdisciplinary approaches to study the social behaviors in a particular space form, which has great potential in future research.

summary Creative practice design research brings forth rich opportunities for the exploration of inter-domain connections between music and architecture. Through inter-disciplinary creative practice explorative project work founded on a methodology of improvisation on the digital drum kit, two stages of design research project work are outlined. In the first stage, a language of polyrhythmic drumming is parametrically spatialized as a reflective lens on an extant creative practice. From here, a new form of 'Spatial Improvisation' is explored, where conceptual spatial forms are generated from improvisations on the digital drum kit. This new musico-spatial design practice involves mediating a spatio-temporal-dynamical 'Y-Condition (Martin, 1994)' wherein temporal and dynamic design decisions translate from the musical domain into the spatial domain through 'spatial thinking-in-action'.

summary This study applies self-organization as a methodology to understand the complex process of city networks caused by interactions between spatial structures and individual behaviors. The agent-based simulations have been conducted to investigate the visible and invisible networks understanding the self-organized aspects of city development processes. To develop optimal future networks providing connectivity and accessibility this study investigates spatial network configurations from internal individual behavior and movement. As results, it was found that the spatial configurations of the agent movement trails match to the current district boundaries and the similar network patterns were seen in various control values of agent behavior settings. This study contributes to searching out the hierarchy of network structures which is an important factor for re-planning of the way system.

summary This paper shows a design and building application of a novel structure concept which is presented and developed by the author. The form-found pavilion demonstrates the validity of the design methodology and the related technical details of the design and fabrication process in an arbitrary design domain. The large pavilion (7m*6m*2.5m) with only 1mm paperboard also shows the great potentials of the thin sheet materials to be used in shell structure designs. The structural concept is based on the spatial tessellation of shell spaces into groups of cellular cavities. The cellular cavity is mainly composed of two curved membranes and the circumferential ribs. Both global and local membrane actions can be activated by the use of materials as thin as 1mm. Based on the structural analysis of the foregoing pavilion, the structural behavior is discussed in detail with a physical compressive test of the different group of cellular cavities. The assembly process of the pavilion is discussed with a prototype in full scale. As a successful efficient paper-shell structure, this pavilion demonstrates the structural concept and could inspire the potentials of thin materials for future shell designs.

summary The identity of an urban environment is important because it contributes to self-identity, a sense of community, and a sense of place. However, under present-day conditions, the identities of expanding cities are rapidly deteriorating and vanishing, especially in the case of Asian cities. Therefore, cities need to build their urban identity, which includes the past and points to the future. At the same time, cities need to add new features to improve their livability, sustainability, and resilience. In this paper, using data mining technologies for various types of geo-referenced big data and combine them with the space syntax analysis for observing and learning about the socioeconomic behavior and the quality of space. The observed and learned features are identified as the urban identity. The numeric features obtained from data mining are transformed into catalogued levels for designers to understand, which will allow them to propose proper designs that will complement or improve the local traditional features. A workshop in Taiwan, which focuses on a traditional area, demonstrates the result of the proposed methodology and how to transform a traditional area into a livable area. At the same time, we introduce a website platform, Quick Urban Analysis Kit (qua-kit), as a tool for citizens to participate in designs. After the workshop, citizens can view, comment, and vote on different design proposals to provide city authorities and stakeholders with their ideas in a more convenient and responsive way. Therefore, the citizens may deliver their opinions, knowledge, and suggestions for improvements to the investigated neighborhood from their own design perspective.

summary Visibility plays an important role in perception and use of an urban design, and thus often becomes a target of design analysis. This work presents a fast method of evaluating various visibility-based design characteristics, such as isovists or insolation exploiting the GPU rendering pipeline and compute shaders. The proposed method employs a two-stage algorithm on each point of interest. First, it projects the visible space around a vantage point onto an equirectangular map. Second, it folds the map using a flexibly defined function into a single value that is associated with the vantage point. Being executed on a grid of points in a 3D scene, it can be visualized as a heat map or utilized by another algorithm for further design analysis. The developed system provides nearly real-time analysis tools for an early-stage design process to a broad audience via web services.

summary This paper presents an opportunistic sensing system for air quality monitoring to forecast the implicit factors of air pollution. Opportunistic sensing is performed by web scraping in the social network service to extract information. The data source for the air quality analysis combines two types of information: explicit and implicit information. The objective is to develop the information extraction methodology by web scraping for smart cities. The application development methodology has potential for solving real-world problems such as air pollution by data comparison between social activity observing and data collecting in sensor network.

title Multiscale modeling frameworks for architecture: Designing the unseen and invisible with phase change materials

summary Multiscale design and analysis models promise a robust, multimethod, multidisciplinary approach, but at present have limited application during the architectural design process. To explore the use of multiscale models in architecture, we develop a calibrated modeling and simulation platform for the design and analysis of a prototypical envelope made of phase change materials. The model is mechanistic in nature, incorporates material-scale and precinct scale-attributes, and supports the design of two- and three-dimensional phase change material geometries informed by heat transfer phenomena. Phase change material behavior, in solid and liquid states, dominates the visual and numerical evaluation of the multiscale model. Model calibration is demonstrated using real-time data gathered from the prototype. Model extensibility is demonstrated when it is used by designers to predict the behavior of alternate envelope options. Given the challenges of modeling phase change material behavior in this multiscale model, an additional multiple linear regression model is applied to data collected from the physical prototype in order to demonstrate an alternate method for predicting the melting and solidification of phase change materials.

summary The analysis of make-belief drawings and models of Sci-Fi spaceships and architecture, leaves architects usually in absence of interior, material or program information. The spatial depth of sci-fi digital or physical models is virtually non-existent and unresolved. This discrepancy within sci-fi scenarios inspired the development of an integrated teaching methodology within design studios, with the academic objective to utilize computational methods for analysis, reproduction and eventually composition, while assessing its capacity to achieve a successful assimilation of design computation in the curriculum. The Spaceship Architecture Design Studio at University of Innsbruck's Institute for Experimental Architecture.hochbau follows a procedural approach in which the design objective is not predefined. Yet, it aims to be 'outside of this world' as a sci-fi architectural quality-enriched result of our reality, via a design oriented course with immersive computational strategies.

summary There is a typical symbiotic relationship between behavior and space. Design and evaluation of space are also inseparable from people's behavioral needs. Therefore, the study of behavior patterns can be regarded as the process of exploring the relationship between human and space. Traditional behavioral research lacks precise micro-individual data and analytical tools to express complex environments, and is more inclined to macro and qualitative static analysis. With the maturity of indoor positioning technology, the use of big data as a medium to quantitatively study the laws of behavior has gradually penetrated into the micro-level of indoor space. This paper begins with a brief introduction of the behavioral performance research process in history. The paper then describes the method that constructs the observation, quantification and visualization process of behavior data by using UWB positioning technology and visualization implementation system through an on-site experiment of office space. The last part of this paper discusses the establishment of spatial redesign method by mining the behavior data, and translating the results into spatial attributes.

summary While the original Nine Square Grid problem, developed by John Hejduk and other influential educators, has shown many time-tested strengths; the value of the foundation studio project relies strongly on repetition and iteration. This activity oftentimes can be tedious when executed using traditional media. To expand upon the pedagogical goals of the original Nine Square Grid problem,we developed a virtual reality tool titled 'Nine Cube VR.' This tool expands upon the pedagogical goals of the original Nine Square Grid problem. Our tool takes advantage of immersive technology and its capacity to maximize object and spatial presence to aid in teaching beginning design students. Using the Unity game engine for development, zSpace Virtual/Augmented Reality desktop monitor and the HTC Vive head-mounted display, we created a multi-platform, easy-to-use kit-of-parts to educate beginning design students in architecture and interior design foundation design concepts.

summary The process for constructing freeform buildings composed of many non-repetitive shapes and waste-free formwork systems remains relatively unexplored. This research reviews a method for fabricating complex double-curved shapes without utilizing single-use formworks. This work answers questions regarding the manufacturing of these shapes in an environmentally-friendly and economic fashion. The proposed method, called a "transformative formwork," could replace state-of-the-art CNC-milled molds and is potentially suitable for large-scale construction. The transformative formwork uses a stretchable membrane or "interpolation layer" that can be manipulated into any curved surface by using vertical bars capable of being rearranged into different heights. Here, to accurately generate most of the smooth, double-curved surfaces, laser kerfing is used for bending interpolation layer into almost any complex shape. A parametric model simplifies local or global changes to the density of the kerfing patterns, modifying the deformation behavior of the layer. Several kerfed interpolation layers produced for four transformative formworks showed that the application of this method.

summary Applying the method of "Land-Use Mix" (Amindabari et al. (2013)) and Focusing on changes in highly mixed land use areas within an extensive survey area and detailed analytical unit, the analysis in this study revealed some trends of distribution of mixed land use areas and their declining patterns in the eastern part of Saitama Prefecture, Japan. For example, among the changing land use patterns of Highly-Mixed-Points-as-of-1994, the pattern that a decreasing mixture index was associated with increasing residential land and decreasing commercial land occurred most often, and the points that changed with that pattern accounted for about 32% of all the Highly Mixed Points, and about 51% of the decrease in mixture index points.

summary The paper investigates the design loop of parametrically creating an architectural shape based on the analysis of the specific wind situation of the design site, continuously testing the design's performance in the wind using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations and subsequently adjusting the formed architectural shape based on the wind simulations' results. An optimal shape for the determined behavior in the wind is sought in this iterative process. The design strategy is being developed as an attempt to create a sustainable and effective alternative design approach for the changing future environment. The complexity of the process, particularly the need of the repetitive wind tunnel adjustment for every new design situation, or the need of external post-processing software for displaying the wind results of every new architectural shape remains a disadvantage in the search for an optimal architectural solution.

summary In the late 1960s the architect Nicholas Negroponte introduced that the physical environment could exhibit reflexive and simulated behaviours, an idea that has since been widely explored. Despite of this wider interest, there is not, however, a systematic approach to understanding architectural responsiveness in the digital age. This paper aims to provide a formal way to facilitate designing smart and interactive artificiality in the built environment. This paper presents a conceptual framework, through exploratory studies on recent architecture, highlighting four key behaviours: (1) tangible interaction, (2) embodied response, (3) ambient simulation, and (4) mixed reality. In addition, two essential enablers, collectiveness and immersion, are proposed to enhance these key behaviours. This framework can be used as a tool to systematically identify and characterise the responsiveness of "responsive architecture". The creative mixtures of the key behaviours will contribute to the development of unique responsive environments.

title A framework for generating and evaluating façade designs using a multi-agent system approach

summary Digital design paradigms in architecture have been rooted in representational models which are geometry centered and therefore fail to capture building complexity holistically. Due to a lack of computational design methodologies, existing digital design workflows do little in predicting design performance in the early design stage and in most cases analysis and design optimization are done after a design is fixed. This work proposes a new computational design methodology, intended for use in the area of conceptual design of building design. The proposed methodology is implemented into a multi-agent system design toolkit which facilitates the generation of design alternatives using stochastic algorithms and their evaluation using multiple environmental performance metrics. The method allows the user to probabilistically explore the solution space by modeling the design parameters’ architectural design components (i.e. façade panel) into modular programming blocks (agents) which interact in a bottom-up fashion. Different problem requirements (i.e. level of daylight inside a space, openings) described into agents’ behavior allow for the coupling of data from different engineering fields (environmental design, structural design) into the a priori formation of architectural geometry. In the presented design experiment, a façade panel is modeled into an agent-based fashion and the multi-agent system toolkit is used to generate and evolve alternative façade panel configurations based on environmental parameters (daylight, energy consumption). The designer can develop the façade panel geometry, design behaviors, and performance criteria to evaluate the design alternatives. The toolkit relies on modular and functionally specific programming modules (agents), which provide a platform for façade design exploration by combining existing three-dimensional modeling and analysis software.

title Multiagent approach to temporal and punctual urban redevelopment in dynamic, informal contexts

summary This article presents design research speculating on computationally enabled planning approaches for urban sites where informal developments make conventional masterplans ineffectual. The project advances the thesis that the spatial complexity of urban sites can be effectively studied through a network or mesh representation and that rapid change in informal settlements is not an obstacle to planned redevelopment but can be addressed through dynamic modeling and punctual interventions. In this way, the rapid turnover of the built environment can be a mechanism through which to introduce directed planning without canceling out bottom-up actions. In the case study presented, we use a multiagent approach that is able to adapt to a continuously changing context. The agents are driven by weighted random walks and compute localized analyses of the morphology of the network of public space as they move. The information generated by the multiagent simulation is aggregated to identify potential modifications to the urban fabric, with an emphasis on pedestrian connectivity.

title Digital Culture - An Interconnective Design Methodology Ecosystem

summary Transitioning away from traditional design methodology, for example, paper sketching, CAAD works, and 'flat screen' rendering, this paper proposes a new methodological ecosystem of which tests its validity within a studio-based case study. The focus will prove whether dynamic implementation and interconnectivity of evolving design tools can create richness and complexity of a design outcome through arbitrary phases of a generative design methodology ecosystem. Processes tested include combinations of agent simulations, artistic image processing analysis, site photogrammetry, 3D immersive sketching both abstract and to site-scale, parametric design generation, and virtual reality style presentations. Enhancing the process of design with evolving techniques in a generative way which dynamically interconnects will stimulate a digital culture of design generation that includes new aspects of interest and introduces innovative opportunities within all corners of the architectural realm. Methodology components within this ecosystem of interaction prove that the architecture cannot be as rich and complex without the utilisation of all strengths within each unique design tool.

summary This paper documents the computational design methods, digital fabrication strategies, and generative design process for Lumen, winner of MoMA & MoMA PS1’s 2017 Young Architects Program. The project was installed in the courtyard at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, New York, during the summer of 2017. Two lightweight 3D digitally knitted fabric canopy structures composed of responsive tubular and cellular components employ recycled textiles, photo-luminescent and solar active yarns that absorb and store UV energy, change color, and emit light. This environment offers spaces of respite, exchange, and engagement as a 150 x 75-foot misting system responds to visitors’ proximity, activating fabric stalactites that produce a refreshing micro-climate. Families of robotically prototyped and woven recycled spool chairs provide seating throughout the courtyard. The canopies are digitally fabricated with over 1,000,000 yards of high tech responsive yarn and are supported by three 40+ foot tensegrity towers and the surrounding matrix of courtyard walls. Material responses to sunlight as well as physical participation are integral parts of our exploratory approach to the 2017 YAP brief. The project is mathematically generated through form-finding simulations informed by the sun, site, materials, program, and the material morphology of knitted cellular components. Resisting a biomimetic approach, Lumen employs an analogic design process where complex material behavior and processes are integrated with personal engagement and diverse programs. The comprehensive installation was designed by Jenny Sabin Studio and fabricated by Shima Seiki WHOLEGARMENT, Jacobsson Carruthers, and Dazian with structural engineering by Arup and lighting by Focus Lighting.

summary To this day, proper handling of uncertainties -including unknown variables in primary stages of a design, an actual climate data, occupants' behavior, and degradation of material properties over the time- remains as a primary challenge in an architectural design decision-making process. For many years, conventional methods based on the architects' intuition have been used as a standard approach dealing with uncertainties and estimating the resulting errors. However, with buildings reaching great complexity in both their design and material selections, conventional approaches come short to account for ever-existing but unpredictable uncertainties and prove incapable of meeting the growing demand for precise and reliable predictions. This study aims to develop a probability-based framework and associated prototypes to employ uncertainty analysis and sensitivity analysis in architectural design decision-making. The current research explores an advanced physical model for thermal energy exchange characteristics of a hypothetical building and uses it as a test case to demonstrate the proposed probability-based analysis framework. The proposed framework provides a means to employ uncertainty and sensitivity analysis to improve reliability and effectiveness in a buildings design decision-making process.
