title What’s Happening to Architectural Sketching? - Interviewing architects about transformation from traditional to digital architectural sketching as a communicational tool with clients

summary The paper discusses 23 interviewed architects in practice about the role of traditional and digital sketching (human-computer interaction) in communication with the client. They were selected from 1995 to 2018 (the interval of graduation) from three different countries: the Czech Republic (CR), Slovakia (SR), Netherland (NR). To realize three blending areas that impact the approach to sketching: (I) Traditional hand and physical model studies (1995-2003). (II)Transition form - designing by hand and PC (2004–2017). (III) Mainly digital and remote forms of designing (2018–now). Interviews helped transform 31 “parameters of tools use” from the previous theoretical framework narrowed down into six main areas: (1) Implementation; (2)Affordability; (3)Timesaving; (4) Drawing support; (5) Representativeness; (6) Transportability. Paper discusses findings from interviewees: (A) Implementation issues are above time and price. (B) Strongly different understanding of what digital sketching is. From drawing in Google Slides by mouse to sketching in Metaverse. (C) Substantial reduction of traditional sketching (down to a total of 3% of the time) at the expense of growing responsibilities. (D) 80% of respondents do not recommend sketching in front of the client. Also, other interesting findings are further described in the discussion.

title From the automated generation of layouts to fabrication with the use of BIM: a new agenda for Architecture in the 21st century

summary Scripting, BIM and Digital Fabrication are already recognized as important skills in education and practice in Architecture in the 21st century. However, they are not always applied together to generate innovative results for the industry. This paper starts from the observation of the difficulty that prefabricated bathroom factories have in meeting a demand for mass customization and proposes a workflow that goes from the generation of layouts to modeling in BIM and the automated production of documents for manufacturing. The preliminary results demonstrate the possibility of changing the mass production culture of an industry, by means of applying the proposed workflow.

summary Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been proposed to be additional architectural design mediums for at least 25 years (Dagit, 1993). Despite rapid technical and technological development, it has not been adopted into architectural design practices as compared to academia and research. Surveys from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and Royal Institutes of British Architects (RIBA) demonstrate the state of architectural practices; 72% of architects and 65% of architects respectively are not using any kind of virtual, augmented, or mixed reality in their practices(RIBA and Microsoft, 2018; Hampson, 2020). In this paper, the authors investigate the state of practices, issues, challenges, and opportunities of the utilization of virtual, augmented, and mixed realities in six architectural practices in the Danish context. Three of the practices are large architectural practices, one medium-sized practice specializing in institutional, healthcare and cultural architecture, and one firm designing private family houses, kindergartens, daycares and places for people with disability and, one experimental design studio. All these practices have used VR/AR in their projects to various degrees. In recent years Danish architectural practices have been involved in various VR/AR-based exhibitions, demonstrations, and tool developments to promote the usage of the same in design practice. Through a set of qualitative interviews with personnel from key architectural practices, the authors would like to demonstrate the present state of practices. The investigation explores the usage of VR and AR in Danish architecture practices by identifying challenges and opportunities regarding skill levels, architectural typology, use cases, toolchains, and workflow and shows similarities and differences between traditional and VR-based design processes. The main findings show how VR/AR-based visualization helps architects to perceive spatiality and also ushers creativity through immersion and overlays.

title Bio-digital aesthetics as value system of post-Anthropocene architecture

summary It is timely within the Anthropocene era, more than ever before, to search for a non-anthropocentric mode of reasoning, and consequently designing. The PhotoSynthetica Consortium, established in 2018 and including London-based ecoLogicStudio, the Urban Morphogenesis Lab (Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London) and the Synthetic Landscape Lab (University of Innsbruck, Austria), has therefore been pursuing architecture as a research-based practice, exploring the interdependence of digital and biological intelligence in design by working directly with non-human living organisms. The research focuses on the diagrammatic capacity of these organisms in the process of growing and becoming part of complex bio-digital architectures. A key remit is training architects’ sensibility at recognising patterns of reasoning across disciplines, materialities and technological regimes, thus expanding the practice’s repertoire of aesthetic qualities. Recent developments in evolutionary psychology demonstrate that the human sense of beauty and pleasure is part of a co-evolutionary system of mind and surrounding environment. In these terms, human senses of beauty and pleasure have evolved as selection mechanisms. Cultivating and enhancing them compensate and integrate the functions of logical thinking to gain a systemic view on the planet Earth and the dramatic changes it is currently undergoing. This article seeks to illustrate, through a series of recent research projects, how a renewed appreciation of beauty in architecture has evolved into an operational tool to design and measure its actual ecological intelligence.

summary The rise of platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and Uber, initially celebrated as part of a disruptive new era of the internet, has slowly been reassessed as a problematic and unregulated form of twenty-first-century info-capitalism that contributes to inequality, mistrust, and user polarization. The internet has become a place for content creation, not only consumption, and the content freely created by the network of users has defined a self-organizing system of ad-hoc audiences following echo chambers organized through artificial intelligence, which amplifies previously identified trends. While a large portion of the content created by users seems to be aimed at personal forms of entertainment, a few remarkable projects, such as Wikipedia, have allowed hundreds of users to contribute to a collective goal. While we can observe that the platform model has appeared in diverse disciplines, allowing the creation of content from news articles to music, we have not seen the emergence of a robust design platform intended to proliferate and advance the discipline of architecture.

This paper makes the case that video game technology and its audiences have reached a state of technical capability that could allow for architectural platforms to emerge, one in which players could learn, create, and share architectural designs. Such a platform comes with a series of ethical imperatives, questions of value proposition, and liabilities, as well as a high potential to communicate and proliferate architectural knowledge and know-how. Common’hood, currently under development, will be used as a case study to engage the development of an ethical architectural platform that develops a proposition towards authorship, ownership, and collective engagement.

summary Increasing applications of parametric design and performance simulations by architectural designers present opportunities to design more resource- and energy-efficient buildings via simulation-based optimization. But Architectural Design Optimization (ADO) is less widespread that one might expect, due to, among other challenges, the problematic integration of optimization with architectural design. This problematic integration stems from a contrast between "wicked" or "co-evolving" architectural design problems and optimization problems. To mitigate the contrast between architectural and optimization problems, this paper presents Performance Explorer, an interactive, visual tool for performance-informed design space exploration (DSE). Performance-informed DSE emphasizes selection, refinement, and understanding over finding highest-performing design candidates. Performance Explorer allows interactive DSE via a visualization of a fitness landscape, with real-time feedback provided with a surrogate model. Performance Explorer is evaluated through a user test with thirty participants and emerges as more supportive and enjoyable to use than manual search and/or optimization.

title Multiscale modeling frameworks for architecture: Designing the unseen and invisible with phase change materials

summary Multiscale design and analysis models promise a robust, multimethod, multidisciplinary approach, but at present have limited application during the architectural design process. To explore the use of multiscale models in architecture, we develop a calibrated modeling and simulation platform for the design and analysis of a prototypical envelope made of phase change materials. The model is mechanistic in nature, incorporates material-scale and precinct scale-attributes, and supports the design of two- and three-dimensional phase change material geometries informed by heat transfer phenomena. Phase change material behavior, in solid and liquid states, dominates the visual and numerical evaluation of the multiscale model. Model calibration is demonstrated using real-time data gathered from the prototype. Model extensibility is demonstrated when it is used by designers to predict the behavior of alternate envelope options. Given the challenges of modeling phase change material behavior in this multiscale model, an additional multiple linear regression model is applied to data collected from the physical prototype in order to demonstrate an alternate method for predicting the melting and solidification of phase change materials.

summary A persistent challenge to the more widespread use of shape grammars in architectural research is the creation of rules and rule sets for application in design contexts, while leaving space for design creativity despite the limitations of a rule-based system. A hybrid of associative and rule-based approaches may alleviate this. We present one such development, a Grasshopper shape grammar plug-in that embeds a rule-based approach within a parametric modelling environment. It supports shape emergence, visual enumeration of rule application results, and the parametric definition of shapes and shape rules even when selecting a non-parametric rule matching mechanism. Grasshopper's ability to handle geometries and text together allows for external descriptions and labels as attributes to points, enabling definition and application of compound, geometric and description rules. Well-known examples from shape grammar literature are implemented using the plug-in, with a focus on rule definition and application in the context of interaction between the parametric modelling environment and the rule-based interpreter, and simultaneous use of geometry, descriptions, and descriptions as attributes in rules.

summary In the design studio, Virtual Reality (VR) has mainly been included as a visualization tool to explore pre-designed ideas developed in traditional 3D software or using pen on paper. Meanwhile, a reshaping of the design process has been taking place, bringing forward interaction/experiential concerns and co-design approaches throughout disciplines in a push for a more thorough consideration of projects' contexts. This paper reports an exploratory study of how immersive contextual representations influence the co-ideation process. Audio-video recordings of co-ideation sessions (9) from a pedagogical studio were analyzed through verbal and representational (sketches and design gestures) exchanges as occurring in three different conditions: (a) pen on paper, immersive headset-free VR (b) without, and (c) with the use of contextual immersive environment (photogrammetric scans and 3D models). Results show that, although design conversations were similar across all conditions, design gestures were more often directly related to- than independent from the graphical representation only when using an immersive contextual environment. Furthermore, the rate of sketching episodes in general and sketching explanations were considerably lower in this condition. This could imply that use of pre-made context greatly reduces the need of sketching elements to support a clearer co-ideation.

keywords The paper discusses co-design, development, production, application of TreeHugger (see Figure 1). The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

title Digital provenance and material metadata: Attribution and co-authorship in the age of artificial intelligence

summary This speculative essay examines a single drawing, produced in a collaboration between the authors and a Turtle robot, in a search for methods to evaluate and document provenance in artificial intelligence and robotic design. Reflecting upon the layers of authorship in our case study reveals the complex relationship that already exists between human and machine collaborators. In response to this unseen provenance, we propose new modes to document the full range of creative contribution to the design and production of artifacts from intellectual inputs to digital representations to physical labor. A more comprehensive system for artificial intelligence/robotic attribution could produce counter- narratives to technological development which more fully acknowledge the contributions of both humans and machines. As artificially intelligent design technologies distinguish themselves with distinct capabilities and eventual autonomy, a system of embedded attribution becomes the basis for human–machine collaboration, indeterminacy, and unexpected new applications for existing tools and methods.

summary The almost seamless integration of computation, fabrication and immersion technologies in architecture not only constitutes potentials for exploring design instances through multiple media but also changes design paradigm from form-formation to form-formation-exploration. In this sense, multiverse of design as proposed in this study and integration of various design technologies from virtual to real aims to advance higher order thinking skills and a more exclusive design exploration in computational design process. Undoubtedly, the multiverse of design cannot be handled without emerging technologies temptingly easing fabrication in both physical and virtual realms. On the other hand, such technologies can easily be deceptive in regard with scale, choice of material, details and etc.Therefore, how and which modes of exploration (physical or virtual) should be integrated into the design process is critical. "Exploration of design" in the realm of new technologies does not only connote a formal exploration of design and its performance but it also becomes a way learning/thinking of design enhancing critical thinking and constructivist learning. Within the scope of this study, the multiverse of a form(ation) is explained throughly and examplified through snowflake pavilion which is issued to 4th year and graduate students in the scope of an elective studio course. Snowflake pavillon comprises physical, virtual and mapped reality as a triskelion for immersive experience for visitors.

We propose that using k-means clustering with multivariate climate data a classification system can be defined to objectively represent comfort zones in the tropics. Our study focuses on Colombia, but the approach extends to other countries located in the tropics.

summary Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecologies in the marine world. They are the habitat to tens of thousands of different marine species. However, these wildlife environments are endangered across the globe. Recent research estimates that around 75 percent of the remaining coral reefs are currently under threat. In 2018 after a devastating storm, Hong Kong lost around 80% of its existing corals. Consequently, a team consisting of marine biologists and architects at The University of Hong Kong has developed a series of performative structures that have been deployed in the city's waters in July 2020, intending to aid new coral growth over the coming years. The project was commissioned by the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department (AFCD) and is part of an ongoing active management measure for coral restoration in Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park in Hong Kong. The following objectives were defined as part of the design and fabrication research of the project. To develop a design strategy that builds on the concept of biomimicry to allow for complex spaces to occur that would provide attributes against the detachment of the inserted coral fragment, hence could enhance a diverse marine life specific to the context of the cities water conditions. To generate an efficient printing path that accommodates the specific morphological design criteria and ensures structural integrity and the functional aspects of the design. To develop an efficient fabrication process with a DIW 3D printing methodology that considers warping, shrinkage, and cracking in the clay material. The research team developed a method that combined an algorithmic design approach for the design of different geometries with a digital additive manufacturing process utilizing robotic 3D clay printing. The overall fabrication strategy for the complex and large pieces sought to ensure structural longevity, optimize production time, and tackle the involved double-sided printing method. Overall, 128 tiles were printed, covering roughly 40sqm of the seabed.

summary With recent advancements in VR (Virtual Reality) technology in the past year, it has emerged as a new paradigm in visualization and immersive HMI (Human-machine Interface). On the other hand, in the past decades, BIM (Building Information Modelling) has emerged as the new standard of implementing construction projects and is quickly becoming a norm than just a co-ordination tool in the AEC industry.Visualization of the digital data in BIM plays an important role as it is the primary communication medium to the project participants, where VR can offer a new dimension of experiencing BIM and improving the collaboration of various stakeholders of a project. There are both open source and commercial solutions to extend visualization of a BIM project in VR, but so far, there are no complete solutions that offer a pure IFC format based solution, which makes the VR integration vendor neutral. This work endeavors to develop a concept for a vendor-neutral BIM-VR integration with bi-directional data exchange in order to extend VR as a collaboration tool than a mere visualization tool in the BIM ecosystem.

summary To avoid interruption on architects' tangible-object-based design process, MR.SAP is being developed to co-work with architects as a cost-acceptable personal solution with tangible user interface, which can scan the tangible object, analyze its digital counterpart, and prompt visualized suggestions upon it through a portable projector in real time. It extends the user's capabilities of form perception, real time calculation, and operational positioning upon tangible objects, which can better serve his subjective aesthetic taste and design aims.

summary The paper is divided into two main parts. The first part refers to the history of attempts to use VR technology in the process of architectural space creation in a dynamic way. The second part presents the experiment carried out at our Faculty, in which we implemented VR in the Digital Architectural Composition course. This experiment was divided into two parts. In the both parts Google Blocks software was used. In the first part we have used the first exercises which was completed by students during the first semester in a traditional way (a cardboard mock-up) and then in the third semester as a digital model in Cinema 4D. It was a Solid form with. In the second part of this experiment we asked students to create a sketch of walk through space and they can created their own shapes in their design. The analysis of the results allows to formulate the thesis that there is a qualitative revolution in the area of human-computer interface. The main conclusion is that Virtual Reality eliminates the boundaries between the spectator and the space and that the idea - Designing Become a Place" is still actual.

summary This article presents some results in the architectural design course, which were obtained by under graduate students in two experimental class organized at Federal University of Bahia in 2016 and 2017 years. The class Studio I, with incoming students (2016) and Integrated Digital Studio, with beginners and sophomore students (2017), were planned to have their activities developed in a digital environment, using geometric modeling as the main resource for the architectural design. The results obtained show maturity and autonomy of the students related to architectural designing and the use of digital resources.

summary This paper discusses the authors’ experiences and lessons learned through designing and constructing small- and large-scale robotic prototypes and the fully integrated use of VR and AR for design. Also of focus here are the methodological tools utilized to implement this student-led research in an interdisciplinary educational environment, as well as the design explorations of Mars habitation systems. Through the systems engineering approach, students will generate ideas that may or may not make it to the final design development stage, but may potentially be valuable to future real exploration habitats and mission architectures. The final prototype allows an assessment of the focus parameters, which are the vessels’ transformation capacities and layout adaption. The design objective of this project is to examine strategies for commonality between an interplanetary vehicle (IPV) and a Mars surface habitat. The presented design proposals address this challenge to create a common habitation system in both habitats so that crew members will be familiar with the layout, function, and location throughout the expedition. The design tools operate at the intersection of architectural layout design, mechanics, and structural design, and use origami folding techniques and structural form-finding concepts to generate shell action rigidity. In addition, the project develops a strategy for mobility and transformation of the surface habitat prior to its transformed configuration. The value here lies in understanding lessons from this strategy for both the design process as well as efficiency and optimization in design as a model for terrestrial design.

summary Advances in computational algorithmic design, material science, and fabrication technology have exposed architects to new opportunities in design and enabled them to address contemporary needs of cities and citizens. The far-reaching applications of this technology have provided students with a bewildering array of new tools for their design exploration. Among many of the socio-economic and political challenges facing today's world, homelessness and refugee crisis are the most critical. "Shape Your Shelter" design-build studio aimed to create a portable and transformable shelter using emergent technologies. This paper reviews some of the central concepts of such an endeavor and the role of computational design, digital fabrication, and material behavior as a medium of architectural design education and social services. It describes how these concepts can be used in a pedagogical framework to encourage student Innovation and increase students' engagement in new technological resources as they address critical contemporary and future social issues.
