title Digitally Fabricating Expandable Steel Structures Using Kirigami Patterns

summary This article presents a computational approach to generating architectural forms for large spanning structures based on a “paper-cutting” technique. In this traditional artform, a flat sheet is cut and scored in such a way that a small application of force prompts it to expand into a three-dimensional structure. To make these types of expandable structures feasible at an architectural scale, four challenges had to be met during the research. The first was to map the kinetic properties of a paper-cut model, investigating formative parameters such as the width and frequency of cuts to determine how they affect the resulting structure. The second challenge was to computationally simulate the paper-cut structure in an accurate fashion. We accomplished this task using finite element analysis in the Ansys software platform. The third challenge was to create a prediction model that could precisely forecast the characteristics of a paper-cutting pattern. We made significant strides in this demanding task by using a data-mining approach and regression analysis through 400 simulations of various cutting patterns. The final challenge was to verify the efficiency and accuracy of our prediction model, which we accomplished through a series of physical prototypes. Our resulting computational paper-cutting system can be used to estimate optimal cutting patterns and to predict the resulting structural characteristics, thereby providing greater rigor to what has previously been an ad-hoc and experimental design approach.

summary This paper discusses the authors’ experiences and lessons learned through designing and constructing small- and large-scale robotic prototypes and the fully integrated use of VR and AR for design. Also of focus here are the methodological tools utilized to implement this student-led research in an interdisciplinary educational environment, as well as the design explorations of Mars habitation systems. Through the systems engineering approach, students will generate ideas that may or may not make it to the final design development stage, but may potentially be valuable to future real exploration habitats and mission architectures. The final prototype allows an assessment of the focus parameters, which are the vessels’ transformation capacities and layout adaption. The design objective of this project is to examine strategies for commonality between an interplanetary vehicle (IPV) and a Mars surface habitat. The presented design proposals address this challenge to create a common habitation system in both habitats so that crew members will be familiar with the layout, function, and location throughout the expedition. The design tools operate at the intersection of architectural layout design, mechanics, and structural design, and use origami folding techniques and structural form-finding concepts to generate shell action rigidity. In addition, the project develops a strategy for mobility and transformation of the surface habitat prior to its transformed configuration. The value here lies in understanding lessons from this strategy for both the design process as well as efficiency and optimization in design as a model for terrestrial design.

summary This paper provides insight into a new robotic plastic forming process through the prototypical construction of a full scale structure. The process explored the potential development of an automated setup, which utilizes robotic movement to create three-dimensional components from straight profile plastic beams. Polyethylene beams with a rectangular profile were bent with the help of an infrared heating ring and a 6 axis robotic arm. The digital process with custom-created Rhino/Grasshopper components allows the creation of forms with a high degree of customization in relation to the needed construction time, therefore providing for a highly flexible and quickly developable structural formwork without the need of a mold.

summary This article draws attention to an experience of workshop Masp.Etc.Br carried out by the Research Group Aesthetics of Memory of the 21st Century at the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), in which an aesthetic mapping of Paulista Avenue was done to discuss collaborative processes of image production organized through hashtags. The material gathered was an ample set of images posted on Instagram. After two collaborative edition processes, a final version was projected as a video at the free span of the Museum. These experiences bring attention to the aesthetics of the database and narratives in social networks.

summary With the development of information technology, the ideas of programming and mass calculation were introduced into the design field, resulting in the growth of computer- aided design. With the idea of designing by data, we began to manipulate data directly, and interpret data through design works. Machine Learning as a decision making tool has been widely used in many fields. It can be used to analyze large amounts of data and predict future changes. Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) is a model framework in machine learning. It’s specially designed to learn and generate output data with similar or identical characteristics. Pix2pixHD is a modified version of GAN that learns image data in pairs and generates new images based on the input. The author applied pix2pixHD in recognizing and generating architectural drawings, marking rooms with different colors and then generating apartment plans through two convolutional neural networks. Next, in order to understand how these networks work, the author analyzed their framework, and provided an explanation of the three working principles of the networks, convolution layer, residual network layer and deconvolution layer. Lastly, in order to visualize the networks in architectural drawings, the author derived data from different layer and different training epochs, and visualized the findings as gray scale images. It was found that the features of the architectural plan drawings have been gradually learned and stored as parameters in the networks. As the networks get deeper and the training epoch increases, the features in the graph become more concise and clearer. This phenomenon may be inspiring in understanding the designing behavior of humans.

summary Due to construction costs, the human effects of innovations in architectural design can be expensive to test. Post-occupancy studies provide valuable data about what did and did not work in the past, but they cannot provide direct feedback for new ideas that have not yet been attempted. This presents designers with something of a dilemma. How can we harness the best potential of new technology and design innovation, while avoiding costly and potentially harmful mistakes? The current research use virtual immersion and biometric data to provide a new form of extremely rigorous human-response testing prior to construction. The researchers’ hypothesis was that virtual test runs can help designers to identify potential problems and successes in their work prior to its being physically constructed. The pilot study aims to develop a digital pre-occupancy toolset to understand the impact of different interior design variables of learning environment (independent variables) on learning performance (dependent variable). This project provides a practical toolset to test the potential human impacts of architectural design innovations. The research responds to a growing call in the field for evidence-based design and for an inexpensive means of evaluating the potential human effects of new designs. Our research will address this challenge by developing a prototype mobile brain-body imaging interface that can be used in conjunction with virtual immersion.

summary Mathematical design of free-form shells and their materialisation is the main challenge of this paper that we tried to address through the realisation of two successive pavilion projects. We discuss how combination of explicit use of mathematical design of a minimal surfaces could be combined with the geometrical flexibility of glass-fibre composites to result in a shell with efficient structural performance and material use. This has been tested here first using fibre-composite panels and then sandwich-structured composite panels. We compared the result of both approaches based on their structural and geometrical capacities.

summary Since 2002, the Master's students at the Graduate School of Architecture of Nantes who are enrolled in the "Architecture in Representation" orientation have carried out a pioneering work in the use of digital tools. By adopting the most recent techniques and tools, they have transformed the architectural design approach, thanks to the integration of "narrative design". In fifteen years, students will have gone from the board to digital drawing, to immersion and virtual reality, including short films and interactive devices, without losing sight that the subject of the work is in fact the project, and not the tool. In doing so, they have questioned, led by their professors, the status of synthesis images, the challenges of interactive narrative and of the virtual world. Within the school, time was needed to accept these explorations; the use of digital tools, long criticised, was blocking the appreciation of the content and the students' experimental approaches. Nowadays, the experience from these past fifteen years lead us to ask this question: do digital tools renew the design paradigms, or are we only involved in the evolution of practices through the integration of other means?

summary A primary challenge for the application of an evolutionary process as a design tool is the ability to maintain variation amongst design solutions while simultaneously increasing in fitness. The 'golden rule' of balancing exploration versus exploitation of solutions within the population becomes more critical when the solution set is required to present a controlled degree of phenotypic variation but ensure that convergence of the solution set continues towards increased levels of fitness. The experiments presented within this paper address the control of variation throughout the simulation by means of incorporating a population-based fitness criterion that is utilised as a fitness objective and is calculated dynamically throughout the algorithmic run in both single and multi objective design problems.

summary This paper describes a novel method for reconstructing urban environments based on individual occupant experience. The method relies on a low-cost off-the-shelf 360-degree camera to capture video and audio data from a natural walk through the city. It then uses a custom workflow based on an open-source Structure from Motion (SfM) library to reconstruct a dense point cloud from images extracted from the 360-degree video. The point cloud and audio data are then represented within a virtual reality (VR) model, creating a multisensory environment that immerses the viewer into the subjective experience of the occupant.

This work questions the role of precision and fidelity in our experience and representation of a “real” physical environment. On the one hand, the resulting VR environment is less complete and has lower fidelity than digital environments created through traditional modeling and rendering workflows. On the other hand, because each point in the point cloud is literally sampled from the actual environment, the resulting model also captures more of the noise and imprecision that characterizes our world. The result is an uncanny immersive experience that is less precise than traditional digital environments, yet represents many more of the unique physical characteristics that define our urban experiences.

title Bio-digital aesthetics as value system of post-Anthropocene architecture

summary It is timely within the Anthropocene era, more than ever before, to search for a non-anthropocentric mode of reasoning, and consequently designing. The PhotoSynthetica Consortium, established in 2018 and including London-based ecoLogicStudio, the Urban Morphogenesis Lab (Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London) and the Synthetic Landscape Lab (University of Innsbruck, Austria), has therefore been pursuing architecture as a research-based practice, exploring the interdependence of digital and biological intelligence in design by working directly with non-human living organisms. The research focuses on the diagrammatic capacity of these organisms in the process of growing and becoming part of complex bio-digital architectures. A key remit is training architects’ sensibility at recognising patterns of reasoning across disciplines, materialities and technological regimes, thus expanding the practice’s repertoire of aesthetic qualities. Recent developments in evolutionary psychology demonstrate that the human sense of beauty and pleasure is part of a co-evolutionary system of mind and surrounding environment. In these terms, human senses of beauty and pleasure have evolved as selection mechanisms. Cultivating and enhancing them compensate and integrate the functions of logical thinking to gain a systemic view on the planet Earth and the dramatic changes it is currently undergoing. This article seeks to illustrate, through a series of recent research projects, how a renewed appreciation of beauty in architecture has evolved into an operational tool to design and measure its actual ecological intelligence.

summary Drawing is a language that involves processes of coding and decoding images and must be dominated by professionals who act on the space. In order to contribute to the discussions about graphic representation teaching, this study aims to analyze students' perceptions about two didactic experiences of orthographic views representation: through interaction with physical model and digital model. It seeks to understand which experience is evaluated by the students as the most significant. Another issue of interest to the authors is to understand how much their interaction with the digital object can be considered 'concrete', since they are digital natives.

While digital technologies have already enabled architecture to transcend static physical boxes, new challenges of the present and visions for the future continue to call for both innovative responses integrating emerging technologies into experimental architectural practice and their critical reflection. In this process, the capability of adapting to complex social and environmental challenges through learning, prototyping and verifying solution proposals in the context of rapidly shifting realities has become a core challenge to the architecture discipline. Supported by advancing technologies, architects and researchers are creating new frameworks for digital workflows that engage with new challenges in a variety of ways. Learning networks that recognize patterns from massive data, rapid prototyping systems that flexibly iterate innovative physical solutions, and adaptive design methods all contribute to a flexible and networked digital architecture that is able to learn from both past and present to evolve towards a promising vision of the future.

summary Low-cost programmable materials such as wood have been utilized to replace mechanical actuators of adaptive architectural skins. Although research investigated ways to understand the hygroscopic response of wood to variations in humidity levels, there are still no clear methods developed to track and analyze such response. This paper introduces a computational method to analyze, track and store the hygroscopic response of wood through image analysis and continuous tracking of angular measurements in relation to time. This is done through a computational closed loop that links the smart material interface (SMI) representing hygroscopic response with a digital and tangible interface comprising a Flex sensor, Arduino kit, and FireFly plugin. Results show no significant difference between the proposed sensing mechanism and conventional image analysis tracking systems. Using the described method, acquiring real-time data can be utilized to develop learning mechanisms and predict the controlled motion of programmable material for adaptive architectural skins.

summary In the summer of 2018, our collaboration was awarded a University Design Fellowship from the Exhibit Columbus organization to design, fabricate, and build a large pavilion in Columbus, Indiana as part of a biannual contemporary architecture exhibition. Our proposal for the competition was a pavilion that would double as an ecological education center. Our inspiration for this program was triggered in part by our reading of Jane Bennett’s materialist philosophy outlined in her book Vibrant Matter (2009). Through Bennett’s lens, our design rendered our site’s context as an animate field, replete with pre-existing material composites that we wanted to celebrate through a series of displays, information boards, and artificial lighting. In this, the installation would feature samples of local plants, minerals, and rocks, indigenous to Southern Indiana.

summary The Catoptric Surface research project explores methods of reflecting daylight through a building envelope to form an image-based pattern of light on the interior environment. This research investigates the generation of atmospheric effects from daylighting projected onto architectural surfaces within a built environment in an attempt to amplify or reduce spatial perception. The mapping of variable organizations of light onto existing or new surfaces creates a condition where the perception of space does not rely on form alone. This condition creates a visual effect of a formless atmosphere and affects the way people use the space. Often the desired quantity and quality of daylight varies due to factors such as physiological differences due to age or the types of tasks people perform (Lechner 2009). Yet the dominant mode of thought toward the use of daylighting tends to promote a homogeneous environment, in that the resulting lighting level is the same throughout a space. This research project questions the desire for uniform lighting levels in favor of variegated and heterogeneous conditions. The main objective of this research is the production of a unique facade system that is capable of dynamically redirecting daylight to key locations deep within a building. Mirrors in a vertical array are individually adjusted via stepper motors in order to reflect more or less intense daylight into the interior space according to sun position and an image-based map. The image-based approach provides a way to specifically target lighting conditions, atmospheric effects, and the perception of space.

summary The project aims to investigate the possibility of VR in a combination of visualizing high-dimensional urban data. Our study proposes a data-based tool for urban planners, architects, and researchers to 3D visualize and experience an urban quarter. Users have a possibility to choose a specific part of a city according to urban data input like "buildings, streets, and landscapes". This data-based tool is based on an algorithm to translate data from Shapefiles (.sh) in a form of a virtual cube model. The tool can be scaled and hence applied globally. The goal of the study is to improve understanding of the connection and analysis of high-dimensional urban data beyond a two-dimensional static graph or three-dimensional image. Professionals may find an optimized condition between urban data through abstract simulation. By implementing this tool in the early design process, researchers have an opportunity to develop a new vision for extending and optimizing urban materials.

summary This ongoing research aims to define a general assisted design method to offer non-trivial design options, where form is produced by merging characteristics from initial reference samples collection that serves as an input set. This project explores design processes laying on the use of non-linear procedures and experiments with Self-Organizing Map (SOM), as neural networks algorithms, to generate geometries. All processes are applied to a set of models representing classic sculpture, whose characteristics are encoded by the SOM process. The result of it is a set of new geometry resembling characteristics from the original references. This method produces hybrid forms that acquire characteristics from several input references. The resulting hybrid entities are intended to be non-trivial solutions to specific design situations, so far, at the stage of this research, mainly formal requirements.
