summary This paper discusses the potential of using data from social media and location data platforms to create cartographies that enhance our understanding of urban dynamics. Natural Language Processing (NLP) and sentiment analysis are highlighted as essential tools for comprehending and categorizing this data. The study conducted a systematic review of NLP and sentiment analysis applications in urban studies, covering 27 peer-reviewed journals and conference papers published between 2018 and 2023. The research classified applications into six categories: urban livability, governance and management, user and landscape perception, land use and zoning, public health, and transportation and mobility. Most studies primarily relied on data from social media platforms like Twitter and location data sources such as Google Maps and Trip Advisor. Challenges include dealing with irrelevant or misleading information in publicly available data and limited accuracy when analyzing sentiments of non-English-speaking populations.

keywords The paper discusses co-design, development, production, application of TreeHugger (see Figure 1). The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

title The Employment of Digital Simulation in the Planning Departments in US Cities - How does it affect design and decision-making processes?

summary The increased interactivity of digital simulation tools has offered a wide range of opportunities that may provoke a paradigmatic shift in urban design practice. Yet, research results did not provide any clear evidence that such shift seems to exist. Further studies are required to examine the methods and impact of their usage on decision-making and design outcome. To that goal, this research uses the single-case study design that has been pursued in three phases: literature review, online survey, and semi-structured interviews. The results have shown inadequacies, inconsistency, and ineffectiveness of usage of the tools that are most appropriate to the design activities of each phase and thus a limited impact on critical areas of the decision-making. The impact of the tools' usage is found to be correlated with not only the extent of their usage, but also with a variety of procedural and substantive factors such as the plan methodology, extent of tool's usage, choice of the appropriate tool, and planners' skills and capabilities in using those tools.

The juxtaposition of this seeming contradictory research and/or projects paints a picture of a broadening computational discourse at the intersection of art, science and technology. The presented research mediates physical, digital, virtual and mixed realities, bridges scales from the singular material compounds to the complex conglomerations associated with the urban environment, and all the while pushing against the limits of design both on Earth and beyond. This year’s conference calls into question how we within the disciplines of architecture and design as well as those outside view the role of computation, production and advanced technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence within architecture, design and the built environment.

title IndAtlas - Technopolitic platform for urban investigation

summary This article presents the project of the urban research platform IndAtlas, currently in early development stage by UFMG’s Research Group Indisciplinar. Through the association of crowdsourcing tools, a spatial database and the production of visualizations of different types, it is intended to create a Web platform for collecting, analyzing and depicting information about processes of production and transformation of urban space. It is proposed that the phenomena (themes) investigated in the platform are approached mainly from four axes: 1) spatial / territorial; 2) temporal; 3) social; 4) communicational. To do this, we try to combine online collaborative maps with the production of dynamic timelines and visualizations of networks of social actors (graphs), connected with social networks and Wiki pages. The article will address the development of Indisciplinar’s working method, which guided the proposal of the platform, as well as the functional and technical aspects to be observed for its implementation, the proposed architecture and the importance of interoperability for the project. Finally, the inquiries derived from the first test experiment of an IndAtlas test prototype will be presented. The experiment took place in a workshop belonging to the Cidade Eletrônika 2018 Festival – an arts and technology event. The workshop was offered in January of the same year, and it proposed a collaborative cartography of the Santa Tereza neighborhood, in Belo Horizonte / MG – a traditional neighborhood of great importance for historical heritage, currently subject to great real estate pressure and the focus of a series of territorial disputes.

title From the automated generation of layouts to fabrication with the use of BIM: a new agenda for Architecture in the 21st century

summary Scripting, BIM and Digital Fabrication are already recognized as important skills in education and practice in Architecture in the 21st century. However, they are not always applied together to generate innovative results for the industry. This paper starts from the observation of the difficulty that prefabricated bathroom factories have in meeting a demand for mass customization and proposes a workflow that goes from the generation of layouts to modeling in BIM and the automated production of documents for manufacturing. The preliminary results demonstrate the possibility of changing the mass production culture of an industry, by means of applying the proposed workflow.

summary Urban planning is composed of actions that bring together actors and diverse interests and, therefore, many obstacles. Participation is a fundamental factor for the success of these processes in search of fairer cities as it promotes the exacerbation of conflicts. This research investigates the role of Technologies and Information and Communication (TICs) in participatory processes. For this, virtual participation devices were raised and a connection was made from the established connections between governors and governed. Thus, the objective is to study the potential of ICT use in the construction of more coherent participatory processes.

title Digital provenance and material metadata: Attribution and co-authorship in the age of artificial intelligence

summary This speculative essay examines a single drawing, produced in a collaboration between the authors and a Turtle robot, in a search for methods to evaluate and document provenance in artificial intelligence and robotic design. Reflecting upon the layers of authorship in our case study reveals the complex relationship that already exists between human and machine collaborators. In response to this unseen provenance, we propose new modes to document the full range of creative contribution to the design and production of artifacts from intellectual inputs to digital representations to physical labor. A more comprehensive system for artificial intelligence/robotic attribution could produce counter- narratives to technological development which more fully acknowledge the contributions of both humans and machines. As artificially intelligent design technologies distinguish themselves with distinct capabilities and eventual autonomy, a system of embedded attribution becomes the basis for human–machine collaboration, indeterminacy, and unexpected new applications for existing tools and methods.

summary The paper presents some of the spatial production involved in three events promoted by different organizations in the city of Brasilia, Brazil. The role of architecture was to materialize sensations, experiences and phenomena for the people who participated. This production defines a kind of urbanism produced by groups of people who are temporarily using public spaces of the city with creativity. Limited by minimum time and budgets, and located in a place where high technology is scarce, handcraft is a necessity in all production processes. The main intention is to analyze how the use of advanced technology corresponds to this type of situation.

summary In 2018 after Typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong, the city lost around 80% of its existing corals. As a consequence, a team consisting of marine biologists and architects have developed a series of performative structures that will be deployed in Hong Kong waters intending to aid new coral growth over the coming years. This paper describes the present research that focuses on the design and fabrication of artificial reef structures utilizing a robotic 3d clay printing method addressing the specificities of Hong Kong marine ecologies. The paper describes further the algorithmic design methodology, the optimization processes in the generation of the printing path, and the methodology for the fabrication processes during the production cycle to achieve even quality and prevent cracking during the drying process.

summary Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecologies in the marine world. They are the habitat to tens of thousands of different marine species. However, these wildlife environments are endangered across the globe. Recent research estimates that around 75 percent of the remaining coral reefs are currently under threat. In 2018 after a devastating storm, Hong Kong lost around 80% of its existing corals. Consequently, a team consisting of marine biologists and architects at The University of Hong Kong has developed a series of performative structures that have been deployed in the city's waters in July 2020, intending to aid new coral growth over the coming years. The project was commissioned by the Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department (AFCD) and is part of an ongoing active management measure for coral restoration in Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park in Hong Kong. The following objectives were defined as part of the design and fabrication research of the project. To develop a design strategy that builds on the concept of biomimicry to allow for complex spaces to occur that would provide attributes against the detachment of the inserted coral fragment, hence could enhance a diverse marine life specific to the context of the cities water conditions. To generate an efficient printing path that accommodates the specific morphological design criteria and ensures structural integrity and the functional aspects of the design. To develop an efficient fabrication process with a DIW 3D printing methodology that considers warping, shrinkage, and cracking in the clay material. The research team developed a method that combined an algorithmic design approach for the design of different geometries with a digital additive manufacturing process utilizing robotic 3D clay printing. The overall fabrication strategy for the complex and large pieces sought to ensure structural longevity, optimize production time, and tackle the involved double-sided printing method. Overall, 128 tiles were printed, covering roughly 40sqm of the seabed.

summary The rapid growth of complex contemporary architecture design, contributed by the advance in parametric CAD/CAM software, is accompanied by challenges in the production process; it demands both highly trained workers and technical equipments. This paper reviews current technologies in robotics-aided construction and wearable computers for generic purposes, and proposes the design of a robotic device for construction guidance. It guides the user, the worker, through the assembly process of precision modular constructions, by providing procedural mechanical or haptic assistance in the 3-dimensional positioning of building components. The device is designed to be wearable, portable, and operable as a completely stand-alone system that requires no external infrastructure. A prototype of the device is tested with a mock-up masonry construction experiment, the result of which is reported in this paper, along with discussion for future improvement and application opportunities within the context of highly developed, condensed Japanese urban environments. A greater objective of this paper is to bridge current studies in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and digital fabrication in architecture and promote the potentials of human workers in future construction scenes.

summary The use of technology instigates student interest. Thus, the possibilities offered by the technologies should be presented to students during their professional training. This paper aims to propose to teachers a change in the approach of 'geometry' contents through the use of BIM, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Rapid Prototyping and Digital Fabrication. The methodology chosen was Systematic Review of Literature and literature review without meta-analysis. It presents an overview of the applicability of such technologies in teaching, as well as possibilities little explored. The results indicate that 'geometry' teaching can benefit from the great potential offered by Information and Communication Technologies.

summary This article presents a literature review on the relationship between urban design and travel demand, and systematically maps existing studies in generative, parametric and procedural urban modeling that have approached the subject. The methods used in these papers are discussed, and the computational tools described in them are analyzed to identify how they can be used to support the design process for retrofitting urban streets. The findings are used to identify what further developments are needed in order to allow for visualizing the impact of design decisions on modal share.

title Bio-digital aesthetics as value system of post-Anthropocene architecture

summary It is timely within the Anthropocene era, more than ever before, to search for a non-anthropocentric mode of reasoning, and consequently designing. The PhotoSynthetica Consortium, established in 2018 and including London-based ecoLogicStudio, the Urban Morphogenesis Lab (Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London) and the Synthetic Landscape Lab (University of Innsbruck, Austria), has therefore been pursuing architecture as a research-based practice, exploring the interdependence of digital and biological intelligence in design by working directly with non-human living organisms. The research focuses on the diagrammatic capacity of these organisms in the process of growing and becoming part of complex bio-digital architectures. A key remit is training architects’ sensibility at recognising patterns of reasoning across disciplines, materialities and technological regimes, thus expanding the practice’s repertoire of aesthetic qualities. Recent developments in evolutionary psychology demonstrate that the human sense of beauty and pleasure is part of a co-evolutionary system of mind and surrounding environment. In these terms, human senses of beauty and pleasure have evolved as selection mechanisms. Cultivating and enhancing them compensate and integrate the functions of logical thinking to gain a systemic view on the planet Earth and the dramatic changes it is currently undergoing. This article seeks to illustrate, through a series of recent research projects, how a renewed appreciation of beauty in architecture has evolved into an operational tool to design and measure its actual ecological intelligence.

title Subtractive digital fabrication with actual robot and virtual material using a MARI platform

summary This article presents a project-based research study using a new hybrid augmented reality platform called the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface. Using the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface as a mixture of different software and hardware platforms, ranging from design/modeling software, simulation engine, and an augmented reality application, the designer would be able to evaluate the possibilities/limitations of the fabrication, in real time and as part of the design. This method advances designer’s understanding of the fabrication equipment as an input for the design decision-making process. This article demonstrates the potential of a virtual/actual hybridized platform as a new medium to design, simulate, and evaluate, in order to enhance the digital design and fabrication. Introducing the possibility of real-time communication between the digital design software and the fabrication platforms as well as the augmented reality simulation of the fabrication process, the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface enables designers to test the fabrication process with the fabrication equipment in the early stages of the design process. This method makes it possible to move beyond the traditional limitations of machines pursuing “un-expected creativity,” without any additional time or cost for the process. Using the virtual material for fabrication, the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface reduces the time and cost of having multiple iterations and encourages the hands-on experimental use of the fabrication tool (in this article robotic/computer numeric control milling) not only as a production tool but also as a design study tool.

summary This paper introduces the concept of Virtual Place-making through Urban Gamification for architects and designers as a potential application and approach in architecture and urban design. This introduction will be achieved through introducing Augmented Play and Urban Gamification; identifying the urban gamification components based on the game Pokémon Go; exploring the effect of augmented reality games on the experience of architectural and urban spaces; identifying the role of augmented urban gamification in rediscovering cities and redefining architectural spaces. Finally, an investigation of the existing literature concerning making places is combined with the understanding of the impact of digital technologies to construct an understanding of the concept of Virtual Place-making.

summary The design and construction of the complex, irregularly shaped, and curvilinear building forms are also known as freeform architecture, have gained an interest form architects and engineers. This paper presents how freeform façade designs are defined with its curvilinear geometric characteristics and the systematic approach that is used to design and implement them. The proposed method incorporates product design and integral façade construction approach at AFA Cultural Center freeform façade implementation. Therefore, the paper aims to improve the viability of the proposed method and decreasing the gap between the other disciplines and architects in a systematic way without losing the creativity of the architects.

summary In this study, we defined a set of parameters to evaluate openness, social inclusiveness, economic viability and environmental responsibility in Open Design (OD) Projects. We compared the parameters of eight OD cases of different nature and scale related to the built environment. We identified current limitations to the application of OD in developing countries and developed a set of recommendations to improve openness and guarantee sustainable practices. Results show that social inclusiveness is limited to the existence of digital fabrication tools and collaboration platforms, there is a lack of information concerning environmental aspects and there are positive perspectives for local businesses and job creation.

summary This research presents a novel construction method that links robotic assembly and in place 3D printing. Rather than producing custom joints in a separate prefabrication process, our approach enables creating highly customized connection details that are 3D printed directly onto off-the-shelf building members during their assembly process. Challenging the current fashion of highly predetermined joints in digital construction, detailing in place offers an adaptive fabrication method, enabling the expressive tailoring of connection details addressing its specific architectural conditions. In the present research, the in place detailing strategy is explored through robotic wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM), a metal 3D printing technique based on MIG welding. The robotic WAAM process coupled with localization and path-planning strategies allows a local control of the detail geometry enabling the fabrication of customized welded connections that can compensate material and construction tolerances. The paper outlines the potential of 3D printing in place details, describes methods and techniques to realize them and shows experimental results that validate the approach.
