summary Introducing design innovation within structural systems normally requires the development of novel design strategies for exploring different solutions in which optimized shapes can be derived from material behaviors and force principles. This condition is particularly important for bending- and form-active structures where intricate geometrical arrangements can be produced by combining simple discrete components. The use of real-time physics-based simulations as design tools has rapidly become popular for addressing these problems. However, all numerical methods tend to lack the interactive and playful characteristics that are intrinsic in traditional analogue methods. Because of this, the intuitive and creative characteristics of digital design processes are limited, and therefore a gap between analogue and digital design practices is progressively created.

In this paper, we present a design approach we call "digital vernacular," which involves the combination of interactive and playful characteristics of empirical and experimental methods within numerical models. This approach originates from the technical framework of topology-driven form-finding, which addresses the activation of topologic spaces during real-time physics-based simulations. The presented study is placed within a larger body of research regarding simulation-based design and aims to bridge the gap between analogue and digital design practices. Two computational frameworks based on particle-based methods and a set of research projects are presented to illustrate our design approach.

summary Construction simplicity is crucial to cost control, however design complexity is often necessary in order to meet particular spatial performance criteria. This paper presents a case study of a semi-enclosed meeting pod that has a brief that must contend with the seemingly contradictory conditions of the necessary geometric complexities imperative to improved acoustic performance and cost control in construction. A series of deep oculi are introduced as architectural elements to link the pod interior to the outside environment. Their reveals also introduce sound reflection and scattering, which contribute to the main acoustic goal of improved speech privacy. Represented as a three-dimensional funnel like shape, the reveal to each opening is unique in size, depth and angle. Traditionally, the manufacturing of such bespoke architectural elements in many cases resulted in lengthy and costly manufacturing processes. This paper investigates how the complex oculi shape variations can be manufactured using one universal mold. A workflow using mathematical and computational operations, a standardized fabrication approach and customization through tooling results in a high precision digital process to create particular calculated geometries, recalibrated at each stage to account for the paradoxical inexactitudes and inevitable tolerances.

summary This research explores the design opportunities of a novel fabrication process for large scale architectural installations suitable for outdoor weather conditions. High resolution, bespoke geometries are easily fabricated at no extra cost in a continuous system using Binder Jet printing technology. The material properties of sandstone are considered a design drive for producing structural paths according to a finite element analysis. Several post processing materials are tested for strengthening the final geometry and providing a water resistant solution. The process is tested in a large, 1:1 sound installation of a pair of acoustic mirrors. First, this paper describes the specific potential and challenges of Binder Jet printing for outdoor applications. It, then, outlines the design principles of the sound device, the acoustic mirror, and their integration into a digital model. keywords This paper presents an ongoing work towards the development of an integrated robotically-driven workflow that can be used for the design, development and subsequent fabrication of small-to large-scale elastic tensile mesh structures. This approach involves digital form-finding and optimization, driven by robotic manufacturing principles and it aims to overcome the limitations of currently available tools, to work either in the design or the fabrication phase of the process. At the same time, it involves the fabrication of systems in several scales followed by respective analyses of results according to the specific type and diameter of the material used. Specifically, form-finding and optimization are responsible for controlling the pretension of the elastic threads, aiming to determine the final tensile mesh and to generate the additive robotic tool-path. In parallel, the type and diameter of the material involved, define the necessary changes of the end-effector tool, which is responsible to implement the process. Despite that design results can be in any scale, for study purposes an experimentation into a small-scale is conducted, to evaluate the suggested automated construction process in general and the end-effector mechanism in particular.

summary This paper documents the computational design methods, digital fabrication strategies, and generative design process for Lumen, winner of MoMA & MoMA PS1’s 2017 Young Architects Program. The project was installed in the courtyard at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, New York, during the summer of 2017. Two lightweight 3D digitally knitted fabric canopy structures composed of responsive tubular and cellular components employ recycled textiles, photo-luminescent and solar active yarns that absorb and store UV energy, change color, and emit light. This environment offers spaces of respite, exchange, and engagement as a 150 x 75-foot misting system responds to visitors’ proximity, activating fabric stalactites that produce a refreshing micro-climate. Families of robotically prototyped and woven recycled spool chairs provide seating throughout the courtyard. The canopies are digitally fabricated with over 1,000,000 yards of high tech responsive yarn and are supported by three 40+ foot tensegrity towers and the surrounding matrix of courtyard walls. Material responses to sunlight as well as physical participation are integral parts of our exploratory approach to the 2017 YAP brief. The project is mathematically generated through form-finding simulations informed by the sun, site, materials, program, and the material morphology of knitted cellular components. Resisting a biomimetic approach, Lumen employs an analogic design process where complex material behavior and processes are integrated with personal engagement and diverse programs. The comprehensive installation was designed by Jenny Sabin Studio and fabricated by Shima Seiki WHOLEGARMENT, Jacobsson Carruthers, and Dazian with structural engineering by Arup and lighting by Focus Lighting.

summary Strained gridshells has been one of the most efficient structure system to cover large spans by lightweight construction. Nevertheless, gridshells structure has been seldom used due to the difficulties in gridshells form-finding and erection, as well as its limitation of morphological possibilities. In this regard, this paper aims to provide an integrated design and fabrication approach for extending the application of strained gridshells into the field of complex geometries. First, a form-finding method for complex gridshells design was put forward and tested taking Enneper surface as examples; secondly, the form-finding result was further developed into a gridshells system consisting of continuous laths, rotatable joints and rigid edge beams, which were optimized afterwards based on the structural simulation result with Finite Element Analysis. Third, the construction difficulties of this system were fully addressed in the robotic fabrication and erection process of a full scale prototype. This research tries to fully combine the structural characteristics of the strained gridshell with digital fabrication technologies to extend the application of strained gridshells into structures with more complex geometries.

This paper presents how freeform façade designs are defined with its curvilinear geometric characteristics and the systematic approach that is used to design and implement them. The proposed method incorporates product design and integral façade construction approach at AFA Cultural Center freeform façade implementation. Therefore, the paper aims to improve the viability of the proposed method and decreasing the gap between the other disciplines and architects in a systematic way without losing the creativity of the architects.

summary The paper is divided into two main parts. The first part refers to the history of attempts to use VR technology in the process of architectural space creation in a dynamic way. The second part presents the experiment carried out at our Faculty, in which we implemented VR in the Digital Architectural Composition course. This experiment was divided into two parts. In the both parts Google Blocks software was used. In the first part we have used the first exercises which was completed by students during the first semester in a traditional way (a cardboard mock-up) and then in the third semester as a digital model in Cinema 4D. It was a Solid form with. In the second part of this experiment we asked students to create a sketch of walk through space and they can created their own shapes in their design. The analysis of the results allows to formulate the thesis that there is a qualitative revolution in the area of human-computer interface. The main conclusion is that Virtual Reality eliminates the boundaries between the spectator and the space and that the idea - Designing Become a Place" is still actual.

summary The paper discusses 23 interviewed architects in practice about the role of traditional and digital sketching (human-computer interaction) in communication with the client. They were selected from 1995 to 2018 (the interval of graduation) from three different countries: the Czech Republic (CR), Slovakia (SR), Netherland (NR). To realize three blending areas that impact the approach to sketching: (I) Traditional hand and physical model studies (1995-2003). (II)Transition form - designing by hand and PC (2004–2017). (III) Mainly digital and remote forms of designing (2018–now). Interviews helped transform 31 “parameters of tools use” from the previous theoretical framework narrowed down into six main areas: (1) Implementation; (2)Affordability; (3)Timesaving; (4) Drawing support; (5) Representativeness; (6) Transportability. Paper discusses findings from interviewees: (A) Implementation issues are above time and price. (B) Strongly different understanding of what digital sketching is. From drawing in Google Slides by mouse to sketching in Metaverse. (C) Substantial reduction of traditional sketching (down to a total of 3% of the time) at the expense of growing responsibilities. (D) 80% of respondents do not recommend sketching in front of the client. Also, other interesting findings are further described in the discussion.

summary This paper discusses a theoretical approach and method of making in computational design and construction. The project examines digital and analogue building practices through a social anthropological and STS lens to better understand the use of technology in complex making environments. We position this with respect to contemporary investigations of materials in architecture which use physical and virtual prototyping and collaborative building. Our investigation extends this work by parsing complex making through ethnographic analysis. In doing so we seek to recalibrate computational design methods which privilege rote execution of digital form. This inquiry challenges ideas of agency and intention as ‘enabled’ by new technologies or materials. Rather, we investigate the troubling (as well as extension) of explicit designer intentions by the tacit intentions of technologies. Our approach is a trans-disciplinary investigation synthesizing architectural making and ethnographic analysis. We draw on humanistic and social science theories which examine activities of human-technology exchange and architectural practices of algorithmic design and fabrication. We investigate experimental design processes through prototyping architectural components and assemblies. These activities are examined by collecting data on human-technology interactions through field notes, journals, sketches, and video recordings. Our goal is to foster (and acknowledge) more complex, socially constructed methods of design and fabrication. This work in progress, using a cement composite fabric, is a preliminary study for a larger project looking at complex making in coordination with public engagement.

title Shaping hybrids – Form finding of new material systems

summary Form-finding processes are an integral part of structural design. Because of their limitations, the classic approaches to finding a form – such as hanging models and the soap-film analogy – play only a minor role. The various possibilities of digital experimentation in the context of structural optimisation create new options for the designer generating forms, while enabling control over a wide variety of parameters. A complete mapping of the mechanical properties of a structure in a continuum mechanics model is possible but so are simplified modelling strategies which take into account only the most important properties of the structure, such as iteratively approximating to a solution via representations of kinematic states. Form finding is thus an extremely complex process, determined both by the freely selected parameters and by design decisions.

summary This paper describes the experience of introducing students to design processes that use algorithm design and BIM tools. An exercise was presented to instigate the students to explore the interface between two known processes: the creation of algorithms in Grasshopper and the manipulation of objects in a BIM environment using Archicad. The exercise aimed at bridging the gap between algorithmic form creation and manipulation and representation and documentation techniques required in the design studios in order to encourage the students to explore new design processes using the appropriate tools at each stage.

summary Timber gridshell is an efficient structural system. However, the feature of double curved surface result in limitation of practical application of timber gridshell. Digital technology provides an opportunity to break this limitation and achieve a lightweight free-form gridshell. In the practice of Venue B for 2018 West Bund World AI Conference, architects and structural engineers cooperated to explore innovative design of lightweight steel-timber composite gridshell with the help of digital tools. Setting digital technology as support and restrains of the project as motivation, the design tried to achieve the realization of material, structure, construction and spatial expression. The digital design and construction process will be discussed from four aspects, including form-finding of gridshell surface, steel-timber composite design, digital detailed design and model-based fabrication and construction. We focuses on the use of digital tools in this process, as well as the role of the design subject.

summary The paper aims to address methods of creating a system for design through material studies that are employed as feedback on a computational digital model. The case study described in this paper is the output of an exploration that has investigated physical transformation, interaction and wood materiality over the period of two weeks of the international architecture programme AA Athens Visiting School in Greece. Real-time performative form-responsive methods based on bending and stretching have been developed and simulated in an open-source programming environment. The output of the simulation has been informed by the results of material tests that took place in parallel and have served as inputs for the fine-tuning of the simulation. Final conclusions were made possible from these explorations that enabled the fabrication of a prototype using wood veneer at one-to-one scale. From a pedagogical aspect, the research main focus is to improve the quality of architectural education by learning through making. This is made possible using advanced computational techniques and coupling them with material studies towards an integrated system for architectural prototypes within a limited time frame.

summary This paper discusses the ability to apply machine learning to the combinatorial design-assembly at the scale of a building to urban form. Connecting the historical lines of discrete automata in computer science and formal studies in architecture this research contributes to the field of additive material assemblies, aggregative architecture and their possible upscaling to urban design. The following case studies are a preparation to apply deep-learning on the computational descriptions of urban form. Departing from the game Go as a testbed for the development of deep-learning applications, an equivalent platform can be designed for architectural assembly. By this, the form of a building is defined via the overlap between separate building parts. Building on part-relations, this research uses mereology as a term for a set of recursive assembly strategies, integrated into the design aspects of the building parts. The models developed by research by design are formally described and tested under a digital simulation environment. The shown case study shows the process of how to transform geometrical elements to architectural parts based merely on their compositional aspects either in horizontal or three-dimensional arrangements.

title About (relatively) common operations in digital architectures

summary Many different types of algorithms have been associated to gain complex shapes. They give rise to a large set of unusual forms, through calculations based on computational geometries, self-organizing systems, rule-based systems, and optimization, often still assembled in morphogenesis principles. Many of these discoveries mimic physical, chemical, and even behavioral principles at the edge of this code-translated knowledge. Thus, any new form, the result of this exploratory perspective, can mean some progress. If the understanding of specific algorithmic characteristics has validity (for precise programming), generic concepts are also important for simplifying procedures and presenting general concepts of the result.

summary Kinetair is an interactive stairs prototype which could change its appearance according to the surrounding conditions, providing a diversity of functions, such as stairs, exhibition walls, furniture and so on. This research is based on the Interactive Architecture theory, integrating with digital fabrication technology. This paper will illustrate the origin of the concept, the concept development process, the fabrication process and the various possible application of Kinetair. This experiment evokes us to rethink the fundamental meanings of the architecture components in a brand new perspective, and stimulates designers to explore the new features of conventional constructions with cutting-edge technologies.

summary Virtual Reality (VR) is being revived in major disciplines, including architecture. VR is no longer only employed for basic operations, such as construction of 3D models, dynamic renderings, closed-loop interaction, inside-out perspective and enhance sensory feedback. This paper explains how over the past twenty years technologies and software have evolved that a new eco-system for design processes have risen. This paper discusses how students made full use of both software and equipment in the whole design process; from ideas exploration to site analysis to form generation to design realization. Students have been exposed to a whole range of digital software tools in the beginning. As most of them were already familiar with modelling software, they have in particular been introduced to animation software, game engines and even 3D documentation software such as photogrammetry. Most importantly, they were led to IVE. The paper points out the benefits of adopting such methodology and the difficulties faced by the students at the various stages of the design process.

summary Increasing use of BIM has represented a continuing shift in traditional assumptions on how we navigate the design process. BIM is affording the student the ability to gain a greater understanding of their design ideas via the exploration of scale, spatial organisation and structure, amongst many other design layers, in increasing levels of detail, at the same point in the design process. Architectural education is at a delayed tipping point where architectural students are increasingly looking towards BIM to streamline their design process drawn by the production of realistic visualisation, but with a lack of knowledge and skill in its application. With a lack of guidance and understanding around the application of BIM, the use of BIM in this manner overlooks the potential of BIM to construct and test virtual simulations of proposed schemes, to support design enquiry. A historical concern for the pedagogy constructed around the students’ design process is the application of methods and techniques that support the progression through the design process, (Ambrose, 2014; dash mei & Safari, 2018). This study examines the design process of architectural students and the interaction between analogue and digital methods used in design. These primary modes of communication, offer the opportunity to query the roles and rules of traditional architectural conventions around ‘problem finding’ and ‘problem solving’, challenging the ‘traditional’ design process examined by pioneers like Bruner (1966) and Schon (1987). These approaches are distilled from the findings of the study and presented as guidance to those teaching in architectural aBIMemia to align pedagogic goals to methods of abstraction in this new era of design education reconsidering digital methods in design.
