summary The article presents two methods for generating 3D city models. The methods are based on LiDAR and GIS-2D data. The first one enables to create automatically simplified city models that include buildings in the LoD1 standard (excluding roof geometry). The second one provides for generating precise 3D city models including all components of the city space, such as buildings, tall green, city infrastructure. This involves direct transformation of DSM (Digital Surface Model) data as mesh-3D. The analyses presented are based on data available in Poland (in particular GIS). The results of the study can be easily applied for analysing other cities in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The article presents possibilities of using such models to urban analyses. The methods and figures included in the article have been developed using C++ software developed by the author.

summary There is a typical symbiotic relationship between behavior and space. Design and evaluation of space are also inseparable from people's behavioral needs. Therefore, the study of behavior patterns can be regarded as the process of exploring the relationship between human and space. Traditional behavioral research lacks precise micro-individual data and analytical tools to express complex environments, and is more inclined to macro and qualitative static analysis. With the maturity of indoor positioning technology, the use of big data as a medium to quantitatively study the laws of behavior has gradually penetrated into the micro-level of indoor space. This paper begins with a brief introduction of the behavioral performance research process in history. The paper then describes the method that constructs the observation, quantification and visualization process of behavior data by using UWB positioning technology and visualization implementation system through an on-site experiment of office space. The last part of this paper discusses the establishment of spatial redesign method by mining the behavior data, and translating the results into spatial attributes.

summary In the design studio, Virtual Reality (VR) has mainly been included as a visualization tool to explore pre-designed ideas developed in traditional 3D software or using pen on paper. Meanwhile, a reshaping of the design process has been taking place, bringing forward interaction/experiential concerns and co-design approaches throughout disciplines in a push for a more thorough consideration of projects' contexts. This paper reports an exploratory study of how immersive contextual representations influence the co-ideation process. Audio-video recordings of co-ideation sessions (9) from a pedagogical studio were analyzed through verbal and representational (sketches and design gestures) exchanges as occurring in three different conditions: (a) pen on paper, immersive headset-free VR (b) without, and (c) with the use of contextual immersive environment (photogrammetric scans and 3D models). Results show that, although design conversations were similar across all conditions, design gestures were more often directly related to- than independent from the graphical representation only when using an immersive contextual environment. Furthermore, the rate of sketching episodes in general and sketching explanations were considerably lower in this condition. This could imply that use of pre-made context greatly reduces the need of sketching elements to support a clearer co-ideation.

title Understanding the AR-VR Based Architectural Design Workflow among Selected Danish Architecture Practices

summary Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been proposed to be additional architectural design mediums for at least 25 years (Dagit, 1993). Despite rapid technical and technological development, it has not been adopted into architectural design practices as compared to academia and research. Surveys from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and Royal Institutes of British Architects (RIBA) demonstrate the state of architectural practices; 72% of architects and 65% of architects respectively are not using any kind of virtual, augmented, or mixed reality in their practices(RIBA and Microsoft, 2018; Hampson, 2020). In this paper, the authors investigate the state of practices, issues, challenges, and opportunities of the utilization of virtual, augmented, and mixed realities in six architectural practices in the Danish context. Three of the practices are large architectural practices, one medium-sized practice specializing in institutional, healthcare and cultural architecture, and one firm designing private family houses, kindergartens, daycares and places for people with disability and, one experimental design studio. All these practices have used VR/AR in their projects to various degrees. In recent years Danish architectural practices have been involved in various VR/AR-based exhibitions, demonstrations, and tool developments to promote the usage of the same in design practice. Through a set of qualitative interviews with personnel from key architectural practices, the authors would like to demonstrate the present state of practices. The investigation explores the usage of VR and AR in Danish architecture practices by identifying challenges and opportunities regarding skill levels, architectural typology, use cases, toolchains, and workflow and shows similarities and differences between traditional and VR-based design processes. The main findings show how VR/AR-based visualization helps architects to perceive spatiality and also ushers creativity through immersion and overlays.

summary Our goal is to develop a climatic classification system that extends understanding of human comfort and guides the design of buildings to provide greater thermal comfort to occupants. We propose that using k-means clustering with multivariate climate data a classification system can be defined to objectively represent comfort zones in the tropics. Our study focuses on Colombia, but the approach extends to other countries located in the tropics.

summary With recent advancements in VR (Virtual Reality) technology in the past year, it has emerged as a new paradigm in visualization and immersive HMI (Human-machine Interface). On the other hand, in the past decades, BIM (Building Information Modelling) has emerged as the new standard of implementing construction projects and is quickly becoming a norm than just a co-ordination tool in the AEC industry.Visualization of the digital data in BIM plays an important role as it is the primary communication medium to the project participants, where VR can offer a new dimension of experiencing BIM and improving the collaboration of various stakeholders of a project. There are both open source and commercial solutions to extend visualization of a BIM project in VR, but so far, there are no complete solutions that offer a pure IFC format based solution, which makes the VR integration vendor neutral. This work endeavors to develop a concept for a vendor-neutral BIM-VR integration with bi-directional data exchange in order to extend VR as a collaboration tool than a mere visualization tool in the BIM ecosystem.

summary The form can be described as the action of a force on matter, so this research turned to the essence of this fact of reality to objectively confront it, explore its methods of representation and challenge our design responses. The spaces of topological order that were perceived in the results move away from concrete imaginaries, symbols and metaphors; the design was the result of the information and the matter acted as an informed mass that was modeled from different forces that acted on it. This general research had as its general objective to understand the real, this reality understood as an abstract formal structure, which is based on complex scientific and experimental work, within the digital world.

summary This paper describes a study of using immersive virtual reality (VR) technology to analyze user behavior related to wayfinding, and the integration of the technology with the multi-agent simulation and space syntax. Starting with a discussion on the problems of current agent-based simulation (ABS) and space syntax in constructing the micro-level interactions for wayfinding, the author focuses on how the cognitive behavior and spatial knowledge can be achieved with a player controlled avatar in response to other computer controlled agents in a virtual building. This approach starts with defining the proposed Avatar Agent VR system (AAVR), which is used for capturing a player's movement in real time and form the spatial data, then visualizing the data with various representation methods. Combined with space syntax and ABS, AAVR is used to examine various players' wayfinding behaviors related to gender, spatial recognition, and spatial features such as light, sound, material, and other architectural elements.

summary The article, in the general extent, touches upon issue of the awareness of the cityscape in morphological terms. It concerns in particular the system of open spaces as an unique component of the urban structure of cities. The measurability of the phenomena still seems to be a challenge. The considerations presented in the article are embedded in the environment of virtual city models. The 3D-Negative (N3D) method developed by the author for generating and analyzing open space geometries in the virtual city model environment is used for example area and volume representation of urban structures in terms of space between buildings. The source analytic virtual city model data is generated on the basis of combination of DSM and DTM models. The cases discussed in the article prove the intuitive perception of open spaces in a quantifiable way. In the aspect of spatial data standardization, the presented analyses are embedded in the cityGML LOD1 standard.

summary Quantitative studies using the corpus Google Ngram, namely Culturomics, have been analyzing the implicit patterns of culture changes. Being the top-standard prize in the field of Architecture since 1979, the Pritzker Prize has been increasingly diversified in the recent years. This study intends to reveal the implicit pattern of Pritzker Winners using the method of Culturomics, based on the corpus of Google Ngram to reveal the relationship of the sign of their fame and the fact of prize-winning. 48 architects including 32 awarded and 16 promising are analyzed in the printed corpus of English language between 1900 and 2008. Multiple regression models and multiple imputation methods are used during the data processing. Self-Organizing Map is used to define clusters among the awarded and promising architects. Six main clusters are detected, forming a 3×2 network of fame patterns. Most promising architects can be told from the clustering, according to their similarity to the more typical prize winners. The method of Culturomics could expand the sight of architecture study, giving more possibilities to reveal the implicit patterns of the existing empirical world.

summary Innovation incubator is an emerging kind of office space which focuses on promoting social interaction in the space. From the perspective of environmental behavior, the complex relationship between a particular space form and the social interactions is well worth exploring. Based on Wi-Fi positioning data, this paper examined the spatial and temporal behavior in innovation incubators. Using the interdisciplinary social networks analysis, this paper further analyzed the social interactions in this space, mining out social structures such as gathering and community, and analyzing the relationship between these structures and spaces. The result shows that human behavior in innovation incubators has some interesting characteristics, and the social structures are closely linked with the functional area of innovation incubator. This paper provides a new perspective and introduces interdisciplinary approaches to study the social behaviors in a particular space form, which has great potential in future research.

summary In the recent decades, the high-resolution remote sensing, through 3D laser scanning and photogrammetry benefited historic buildings maintenance, conservation, and restoration works. However, the dense surface models (DSM) generated from the data capture have nonstructured features as lack of topology and semantic discretization. The process to create a semantically oriented 3D model from the DSM, using the of Building Information Model technology, is a possibility to integrate historical information about the life cycle of the building to maintain and improving architectural valued building stock to its functional level and safeguarding its outstanding historical value. Our approach relies on an ontology-based system to represent the knowledge related to the building. Our work outlines a model-driven approach based on the hybrid data acquisition, its post-processing, the identification of the building' main features for the parametric modeling, and the development of an ontological map integrated with the BIM model. The methodology proposed was applied to a large-scale industrial historical building, located in Brazil. The DSM were compared, providing a qualitative assessment of the proposed method.

summary The change of the building morphology directly affects the surrounding environment, while the evaluation of these environment data becomes the main basis for the genetic iterations of the building morphology. Indeed, due to the complexity of the outdoor natural ventilation, multiple factors in the site could be the main reasons for the change of air flow. Thus, the architect is suggested to take the wind environment as the main morphology generation factor in the early stage of the building design. Based on the research results of 2017 DigitalFUTURE Wind Tunnel Visualization Workshop, a novel self-form-finding method in design infancy has been proposed. This method uses Arduino to carry out the dynamic design of the building model, which can not only connect the sensor to monitor the wind environment data, but also contribute the building model to correlate with the wind environment data in real time. The integration of the Arduino platform and the physical wind tunnel can create the possibility of continuous and real-time physical changes, data collection and wind environment simulation, using quantitative environmental factors to control building morphology, and finally achieve the harmony among the building, environment and human.

summary This paper describes the development of a Grasshopper-based planning support tool for urban planning. The tool aims at the analysis of demand in educational facilities and the optimization of their location and capacities. It was developed for the use case of Berlin using only publicly available resources and data sets. Through preprocessed GIS- and statistical data plus an easy-access interface, the tool encourages people from different backgrounds and even those with no professional knowledge in planning, to engage in urban decision making. Although being initially aimed at contributing to a moderated participation process, the tool's simple GUI (graphical user interface) and open source backend, make it usable in any setup - without a briefed advisor or the need for later professional evaluation by another party.

summary The aim of this workshop is to introduce participants to the co-design approach using a Social VR system (without headsets): Hyve-3D (Hybrid Virtual Environment 3D). The system affords simultaneous multi-user co-design (local and remote) using 3D sketches (exportable as vectors) and imported 3D textured geometries, photogrammetry models and point-clouds. Participants will be trained to use the suitable representational ecosystem and the verbal protocols specific for co-design as a particular kind of collaborative design where each will be simultaneously ideating ad-hoc projects instead of cooperating (where individual designs are put together in a later stage).

title Digital provenance and material metadata: Attribution and co-authorship in the age of artificial intelligence

summary This speculative essay examines a single drawing, produced in a collaboration between the authors and a Turtle robot, in a search for methods to evaluate and document provenance in artificial intelligence and robotic design. Reflecting upon the layers of authorship in our case study reveals the complex relationship that already exists between human and machine collaborators. In response to this unseen provenance, we propose new modes to document the full range of creative contribution to the design and production of artifacts from intellectual inputs to digital representations to physical labor. A more comprehensive system for artificial intelligence/robotic attribution could produce counter- narratives to technological development which more fully acknowledge the contributions of both humans and machines. As artificially intelligent design technologies distinguish themselves with distinct capabilities and eventual autonomy, a system of embedded attribution becomes the basis for human–machine collaboration, indeterminacy, and unexpected new applications for existing tools and methods.

summary The theme of the 36th eCAADe Conference is Computing for a better tomorrow. When we consider the aims of research activities, design efforts and mastering towards ideal solutions in the area of digital technologies in the built environment, such as CAD, CAM, CAE, BIM, FM, GIS, VR, AR and others, we may realise the actual reason for that is to make life better, healthier, prettier, happier, more sustainable and smarter. The usefulness of undertaken studies might be tested and proved by the noticeable shared approach of putting humans and their environments in a central position: man and the environment, nature and design, art and technology... Natural disasters and climate change, crime and terrorism, disabilities and society ageing - architects, designers and scientists active in the built environment domain are not able to eliminate all the risk, dangers and problems of contemporary world. On the other hand, they have social and moral responsibilities to address human needs and take up this multifaceted challenge. It involves a co-operation and, moreover, an interdisciplinary and user-oriented approach. The complexity of raised problems should not discourage us, on the contrary, it should stimulate activities towards living up to human dreams of a better and sustainable tomorrow. This calls for a revision of methods and tools applied in research, teaching and practice. Where are we? What are the milestones and roadmaps at the end of the second decade of the 21st century? Do we really take the most of the abundance of accumulated knowledge? Or we skip to explore another undiscovered domains? We invited academicians, researchers, professionals and students from all over the world to address the multifaceted notions of using computing in architectural and related domains for developing a better tomorrow. summary The theme of the 36th eCAADe Conference is Computing for a better tomorrow. When we consider the aims of research activities, design efforts and mastering towards ideal solutions in the area of digital technologies in the built environment, such as CAD, CAM, CAE, BIM, FM, GIS, VR, AR and others, we may realise the actual reason for that is to make life better, healthier, prettier, happier, more sustainable and smarter. The usefulness of undertaken studies might be tested and proved by the noticeable shared approach of putting humans and their environments in a central position: man and the environment, nature and design, art and technology... Natural disasters and climate change, crime and terrorism, disabilities and society ageing - architects, designers and scientists active in the built environment domain are not able to eliminate all the risk, dangers and problems of contemporary world. On the other hand, they have social and moral responsibilities to address human needs and take up this multifaceted challenge. It involves a co-operation and, moreover, an interdisciplinary and user-oriented approach. The complexity of raised problems should not discourage us, on the contrary, it should stimulate activities towards living up to human dreams of a better and sustainable tomorrow. This calls for a revision of methods and tools applied in research, teaching and practice. Where are we? What are the milestones and roadmaps at the end of the second decade of the 21st century? Do we really take the most of the abundance of accumulated knowledge? Or we skip to explore another undiscovered domains? We invited academicians, researchers, professionals and students from all over the world to address the multifaceted notions of using computing in architectural and related domains for developing a better tomorrow. summary The article presents a methodology applied for the assessment of the tall building visual impact on the city scape, using digital tools. The method has been used by the author in the planning practice in several cities in Poland. It enables to determine not only the visibility range of a planned tall building in the city spaces, but also the extent to which it dominates. Findings are presented in a map which reflects both parameters applicable to a given facility. Computation of findings is based on the model of a city consisting of a regular cloud of points (Digital Surface Model) of high quality and dedicated C++ software (developed in cooperation with author). The Visual Impact Size (VIS) method supports the process of conservation and landscaping, in particular in historical cities. It helps predicting spatial implications tall buildings may have. It may also be used for comprehensive development of a modern skyline with tall buildings as a harmonious component of the cityscape. The method is presented using the case study of the Hanza Tower building in Szczecin (Poland).

keywords This paper documents the steps followed to design and construct an oval shaped, high rise structure in Limassol Cyprus. The author presents the developed computational framework which was purposely built to support multiple levels and disciplines of design, construction and digital fabrication leading to a successful delivery of a complex geometry project within time and budget. A fully informed model involving multi-disciplinary data ranging from its conception to its completion establishes a sustainable paradigm for the construction industry, mainly because of its single source of control as opposed to other precedents involving multiple models and information.
