summary "Smart City" business model is guiding the development of future metropolises. Software industry sales to town halls for city management services efficiency improvement are, these days, a very pro?table business. Being the model decided by the industry, it can develop into a dangerous situation in which the basis of the new city design methodologies is decided by agents outside academia expertise. Drawing on complex science, social physics, urban economics, transportation theory, regional science and urban geography, the Lab is dedicated to the systematic analysis of, and theoretical speculation on, the recently coined "Science of Cities" discipline. On the research agenda there are questions arising from the synthesis of architecture, urban design, computer science and sociology. Collaboration with citizens through inclusion and empowerment, and, relationships "City-Data-Planner-Citizen" and "Citizen-Design-Science", configure Lab's methodology provoking a dynamic responsive process of design that is yet missing on the path towards the real responsive city.

title Biomorpher: Interactive evolution for parametric design
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 16 - no. 2, 144-163
summary Combining graph-based parametric design with metaheuristic solvers has to date focused solely on performance-based criteria and solving clearly defined objectives. In this article, we outline a new method for combining a parametric modelling environment with an interactive Cluster-Orientated Genetic Algorithm. In addition to performance criteria, evolutionary design exploration can be guided through choice alone, with user motivation that cannot be easily defined. As well as numeric parameters forming a genotype, the evolution of whole parametric definitions is discussed through the use of genetic programming. Visualisation techniques that enable mixing small populations for interactive evolution with large populations for performance-based optimisation are discussed, with examples from both academia and industry showing a wide range of applications.

summary Many real-world architectural multi-objective problems (MOPs) are dynamic and may have objectives, decision variables, and constraints that change during the optimization process. These problems are known as dynamic MOPs (DMOPs). Dynamic multi-objective evolutionary algorithms (DMOEAs) have emerged in the fields of optimization, operations research, and computer science as one way to address the challenges posed by DMOPs. DMOEAs offer new capacities for exploration and interaction with the designer, but they have not yet been studied in the field of architecture. This research addresses these issues through the development of a unique interactive DMOEA-based design tool for the conceptual design phase. We propose a new modification to the popular nondominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II), that we call the dynamic progressive for architecture NSGA-II (DPA-NSGA-II). We show that DPA-NSGA-II outperforms NSGA-II in finding novel solutions.

title Multi-Objective Qualitative Optimization (MOQO) in Architectural Design
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2018.1.187
source Kepczynska-Walczak, A, Bialkowski, S (eds.), Computing for a better tomorrow - Proceedings of the 36th eCAADe Conference - Volume 1, Lodz University of Technology, Lodz, Poland, 19-21 September 2018, pp. 187-196
summary Architectural design problems are often multi-objective in nature, involving both qualitative and quantitative objectives. Previous research has focused exclusively on the development of multi-objective optimization algorithms that work with multiple quantitative objectives. No previous research has looked at the topic of multi-objective qualitative optimization (MOQO), in which multiple qualitative objectives are optimized simultaneously. This research addresses MOQO through the development of a unique multi-objective optimization algorithm for the conceptual design phase that uses three-dimensional convolutional neural networks (3D CNNs) to measure user-defined qualities in architectural massing models.

title A framework for generating and evaluating façade designs using a multi-agent system approach
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 16 - no. 4, 248-270
summary Digital design paradigms in architecture have been rooted in representational models which are geometry centered and therefore fail to capture building complexity holistically. Due to a lack of computational design methodologies, existing digital design workflows do little in predicting design performance in the early design stage and in most cases analysis and design optimization are done after a design is fixed. This work proposes a new computational design methodology, intended for use in the area of conceptual design of building design. The proposed methodology is implemented into a multi-agent system design toolkit which facilitates the generation of design alternatives using stochastic algorithms and their evaluation using multiple environmental performance metrics. The method allows the user to probabilistically explore the solution space by modeling the design parameters’ architectural design components (i.e. façade panel) into modular programming blocks (agents) which interact in a bottom-up fashion. Different problem requirements (i.e. level of daylight inside a space, openings) described into agents’ behavior allow for the coupling of data from different engineering fields (environmental design, structural design) into the a priori formation of architectural geometry. In the presented design experiment, a façade panel is modeled into an agent-based fashion and the multi-agent system toolkit is used to generate and evolve alternative façade panel configurations based on environmental parameters (daylight, energy consumption). The designer can develop the façade panel geometry, design behaviors, and performance criteria to evaluate the design alternatives. The toolkit relies on modular and functionally specific programming modules (agents), which provide a platform for façade design exploration by combining existing three-dimensional modeling and analysis software.

summary This paper describes a general method for synthesizing discrete 2D and 3D output by building probabilistic models of rasterized or voxelized training data, and subsequently synthesizing new data iteratively by substituting cells or groups of cells in accordance with a learned transition matrix. The process is non-deterministic, stochastic and unsupervised. The size of the source data and output is arbitrary, and the source and output data can have an arbitrary set of cell states. Possible variations of the process are discussed, as well as possible applications in design processes on multiple scales.

summary The article, in the general extent, touches upon issue of the awareness of the cityscape in morphological terms. It concerns in particular the system of open spaces as an unique component of the urban structure of cities. The measurability of the phenomena still seems to be a challenge. The considerations presented in the article are embedded in the environment of virtual city models. The 3D-Negative (N3D) method developed by the author for generating and analyzing open space geometries in the virtual city model environment is used for example area and volume representation of urban structures in terms of space between buildings. The source analytic virtual city model data is generated on the basis of combination of DSM and DTM models. The cases discussed in the article prove the intuitive perception of open spaces in a quantifiable way. In the aspect of spatial data standardization, the presented analyses are embedded in the cityGML LOD1 standard.

summary Tools and methods used by architects always had an impact on the way building were designed. With the change in design methods and new approaches towards creation process, they became more than ever before crucial elements of the creation process. The automation of architects work has started with computational functions that were introduced to traditional computer-aided design tools. Nowadays architects tend to use specified tools that suit their specific needs. In some cases, they use artificial intelligence. Despite many similarities, they have different advantages and disadvantages. Therefore the change in the design process is more visible and unseen before solution are brought in the discipline. The article presents methods of applying the selected artificial intelligence algorithms: swarm intelligence, neural networks and evolutionary algorithms in the architectural practice by authors. Additionally research shows the methods of analogue data input and output approaches, based on vision and robotics, which in future combined with intelligence based algorithms, might simplify architects everyday practice. Presented techniques allow new spatial solutions to emerge with relatively simple intelligent based algorithms, from which many could be only accomplished with dedicated software. Popularization of the following methods among architects, will result in more intuitive, general use design tools.

summary Evolution of natural life and subsequently selection of life forms is an interesting topic that has been explored multiple times. This area of research and its application has high relevance in evolutionary design and automated design generation. Taking inspiration from Charles Darwin's theory, all biological species were formed by the process of evolution based on natural selection of the fittest (Darwin, n.d.) this paper explains exploratory research showcasing semi-automatic design generation. This is realized by an interactive artificial selection tool, where the designer or the end user makes key decisions steering the propagation and breeding of future design artifacts. This paper, describes two prototypes and their use cases, highlighting interaction based optimal design selection. One of the prototypes explains a 2d organic shape creator using a metaball shape approach, while the other discusses a spatial layout generation technique for conceptual design.

title A Computational Tool for Mapping the Users' Urban Cognition - A Framework and a Representation for the Evolutionary Optimization of the Fuzzy Binary Relation between the Urban Conceptions of "Us" and "Others"

summary The paper proposes a computational tool for simulating the users' urban cognitive systems, or more specifically the long-term memory associated with the knowledge of urbanism and its related urban visual features. The tool builds on our comprehensive theory of Urbanism, which presents a monolithic, structured, comprehensive, professional conception of Urbanism based on which any relativistic users' urban conceptions could be predicted as a restructuring of the professional conception. These versatile relativistic conceptions would emerge based on a nurturing environment, which is a conception of the empirical/anthropological collected data of the intended users' reflections against their preferred constructed urban environments. Once the users' conceptions of Urbanism are formulated, which is the first phase of the simulation, the users' impressions against any examined urban constructs are attainable, which is the second phase of the simulation. The two phases, the framework, would be monolithically represented by a proposed novel cellular graph. The proposed computational tool is thought of as a robust technique for the computational incorporation of the users' urban identity, and some of its constituents could be considered as a needed common platform of communication for a successful Human-Computer interaction in the field of urban analysis/design.

summary The urban dynamics observable in an informal settlement are akin to the characteristics of a complex adaptive system. In this paper, we describe an Agent-Based Model designed to simulate the urban dynamics of an informal settlement, Tmor-Da, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The overarching goal was to understand the possible rules that guided the development of built forms and the use of residue spaces in Tmor-Da. A series of simulation experiments were used to examine alternative hypotheses derived from field work and desktop analysis related to morphological changes associated with spatial units, including homes, shops, the orphanage, church and temple. The results suggest that the complex, emergent patterns encapsulated within the informal settlement could be reproduced in a simulation model. We conclude that our model can be used as an investigative tool to explore the most plausible factors contributing to the evolutionary trajectory of an informal settlement.

title Control of Morphological Variation Through Population Based Fitness Criteria
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2018.1.153
source T. Fukuda, W. Huang, P. Janssen, K. Crolla, S. Alhadidi (eds.), Learning, Adapting and Prototyping - Proceedings of the 23rd CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, 17-19 May 2018, pp. 153-162
summary A primary challenge for the application of an evolutionary process as a design tool is the ability to maintain variation amongst design solutions while simultaneously increasing in fitness. The 'golden rule' of balancing exploration versus exploitation of solutions within the population becomes more critical when the solution set is required to present a controlled degree of phenotypic variation but ensure that convergence of the solution set continues towards increased levels of fitness. The experiments presented within this paper address the control of variation throughout the simulation by means of incorporating a population-based fitness criterion that is utilised as a fitness objective and is calculated dynamically throughout the algorithmic run in both single and multi objective design problems.

title Bio-digital aesthetics as value system of post-Anthropocene architecture
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 18 - no. 2, 120-140
summary It is timely within the Anthropocene era, more than ever before, to search for a non-anthropocentric mode of reasoning, and consequently designing. The PhotoSynthetica Consortium, established in 2018 and including London-based ecoLogicStudio, the Urban Morphogenesis Lab (Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London) and the Synthetic Landscape Lab (University of Innsbruck, Austria), has therefore been pursuing architecture as a research-based practice, exploring the interdependence of digital and biological intelligence in design by working directly with non-human living organisms. The research focuses on the diagrammatic capacity of these organisms in the process of growing and becoming part of complex bio-digital architectures. A key remit is training architects’ sensibility at recognising patterns of reasoning across disciplines, materialities and technological regimes, thus expanding the practice’s repertoire of aesthetic qualities. Recent developments in evolutionary psychology demonstrate that the human sense of beauty and pleasure is part of a co-evolutionary system of mind and surrounding environment. In these terms, human senses of beauty and pleasure have evolved as selection mechanisms. Cultivating and enhancing them compensate and integrate the functions of logical thinking to gain a systemic view on the planet Earth and the dramatic changes it is currently undergoing. This article seeks to illustrate, through a series of recent research projects, how a renewed appreciation of beauty in architecture has evolved into an operational tool to design and measure its actual ecological intelligence.

title Aplicability of 2D and 3D isovists and visibility graph analysis for evaluating urban vulnerability to crime: the case of Boa Viagem, in Recife
source SIGraDi 2018 [Proceedings of the 22nd Conference of the Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics - ISSN: 2318-6968] Brazil, São Carlos 7 - 9 November 2018, pp. 308-315
summary This work aims to investigate the applicability of 2D and 3D isovists, as well as Visibility Graph Analysis (VGA), for evaluating urban vulnerability to crime. The methodology is based on correlations between number of crime occurrences and measurements of 2D and 3D isovists, and mean values of visual integration (VGA). The 2D isovists were produced through DeCoding Spaces Toolbox for Grasshopper and the 3D isovists were generated by using algorithms within Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. VGA maps were elaborated within DepthmapX. For this study, were selected nine street segments of Boa Viagem, located in Recife-PE, a neighbourhood which is known for high rates of robberies. Although the number of samples is reduced, the results suggest that criminals prefer much more visually integrated spaces with low occlusivity and fewer spatial cavities.

summary The transport infrastructures are important elements in the cities, but, as there is a lack of planning, they tear through the urban fabric and leave empty spaces. Due to government and private disinterest, these spaces become vacant, forgotten and degraded. However, these extensive Terrain Vague offer new potential for urban use. To exploit this potential, we need methodologies that can offer personalised, extensive, feasible urban solutions. For this, we propose a computational generative system, following a 4-step methodology: 1) Site analyses and Terrain Vague identification; 2) Site classification according to parameters based on a "visual grammar"; 3) Algorithm associating space properties with geometric transformation to generate solutions: namely transformative operations in public spaces, additive transformations in semi-public spaces and subtractive operations in semi-private spaces; 4) Solution evaluation and development, according to shade criteria, spatial hierarchy and volumetric density. With our own algorithms combined with genetic algorithms, we guided the evolution of 50 volumetric solutions. The exponential increase in information requires new methodologies (Schwab, 2018). Results show the potential of computational methodologies to produce extensive urban solutions. This research, developed in a final graduation project in Architecture, aims at stimulating generative methodologies in undergraduate courses.

title Integrated Solid Timber. A multi-requisite system for the computational design, fabrication, and construction of versatile building envelopes

summary The paper presents the development of a building system made from solid timber that fulfils the requirements of modern building skins while expanding the design possibilities through innovation in computational design and digital fabrication. Multiple strategies are employed to develop a versatile construction system that generates structure, enclosure and insulation while enabling a broad design space for contemporary architectural expression. The basic construction unit augments the comparatively high insulation values of solid timber by cutting longitudinal slits into beams, generating air chambers that further inhibit thermal conductivity. These units are further enhanced through a joinery system that uses advanced parametric modeling and computerized control to augment traditional joinery techniques. Prototypes of the system are tested at a building component level with digital models and physical laboratory tests. It is further evaluated in a demonstrator building to test development and further refine design, fabrication and assembly methods. Results are integrated into proposals for new methods of implementation. The results of the research thus far demonstrate the validity of the strategy, and continuing research will improve its viability as a building system.
