summary The last three decades have witnessed the explosion of technology and its impact on the architecture discipline which has drastically changed the methods of design. New techniques such as Agent-based modeling (ABM) and Virtual Reality (VR) have been widely implemented in architectural and urban design domains, yet the potential integration between these two methods remains arguably unexploited. The investigation in this paper aims to probe the following questions: How can architects and urban designers be informed more comprehensively by melding ABM and VR techniques at the preliminary/conceptual design stage? Which platform is considered more appropriate to facilitate a user-friendly system and reduces the steep learning curve? And what are the potential benefits of this approach in architectural education, particularly for the design studio environment? With those questions, we proposed a prototype in Unity, a multi-platform development tool that originated from the game industry, to simulate and visualize pedestrian behaviors in urban environments with immersive design experience and tested it in a scenario-based case study. This approach has also been further tested in an architectural design studio, demonstrating its technical feasibility as well as the potential contributions to the pedagogy.

summary This paper discusses a theoretical approach and method of making in computational design and construction. The project examines digital and analogue building practices through a social anthropological and STS lens to better understand the use of technology in complex making environments. We position this with respect to contemporary investigations of materials in architecture which use physical and virtual prototyping and collaborative building. Our investigation extends this work by parsing complex making through ethnographic analysis. In doing so we seek to recalibrate computational design methods which privilege rote execution of digital form. This inquiry challenges ideas of agency and intention as ‘enabled’ by new technologies or materials. Rather, we investigate the troubling (as well as extension) of explicit designer intentions by the tacit intentions of technologies. Our approach is a trans-disciplinary investigation synthesizing architectural making and ethnographic analysis. We draw on humanistic and social science theories which examine activities of human-technology exchange and architectural practices of algorithmic design and fabrication. We investigate experimental design processes through prototyping architectural components and assemblies. These activities are examined by collecting data on human-technology interactions through field notes, journals, sketches, and video recordings. Our goal is to foster (and acknowledge) more complex, socially constructed methods of design and fabrication. This work in progress, using a cement composite fabric, is a preliminary study for a larger project looking at complex making in coordination with public engagement.

summary In the design studio, Virtual Reality (VR) has mainly been included as a visualization tool to explore pre-designed ideas developed in traditional 3D software or using pen on paper. Meanwhile, a reshaping of the design process has been taking place, bringing forward interaction/experiential concerns and co-design approaches throughout disciplines in a push for a more thorough consideration of projects' contexts. This paper reports an exploratory study of how immersive contextual representations influence the co-ideation process. Audio-video recordings of co-ideation sessions (9) from a pedagogical studio were analyzed through verbal and representational (sketches and design gestures) exchanges as occurring in three different conditions: (a) pen on paper, immersive headset-free VR (b) without, and (c) with the use of contextual immersive environment (photogrammetric scans and 3D models). Results show that, although design conversations were similar across all conditions, design gestures were more often directly related to- than independent from the graphical representation only when using an immersive contextual environment. Furthermore, the rate of sketching episodes in general and sketching explanations were considerably lower in this condition. This could imply that use of pre-made context greatly reduces the need of sketching elements to support a clearer co-ideation.

summary This paper describes a novel method for reconstructing urban environments based on individual occupant experience. The method relies on a low-cost off-the-shelf 360-degree camera to capture video and audio data from a natural walk through the city. It then uses a custom workflow based on an open-source Structure from Motion (SfM) library to reconstruct a dense point cloud from images extracted from the 360-degree video. The point cloud and audio data are then represented within a virtual reality (VR) model, creating a multisensory environment that immerses the viewer into the subjective experience of the occupant.

This work questions the role of precision and fidelity in our experience and representation of a “real” physical environment. On the one hand, the resulting VR environment is less complete and has lower fidelity than digital environments created through traditional modeling and rendering workflows. On the other hand, because each point in the point cloud is literally sampled from the actual environment, the resulting model also captures more of the noise and imprecision that characterizes our world. The result is an uncanny immersive experience that is less precise than traditional digital environments, yet represents many more of the unique physical characteristics that define our urban experiences.

summary Urban morphology significantly impacts resident's well-being. This study examines the impact of urban environments on the sense of well-being, using virtual reality as a research environment. Most of the world's population already live in urban localities; and it is expected that in two decades, more than 70% of the total population of the planet will be city dwellers(UN 2018). This study examines the impact of various urban configurations on dwellers well-being. Participants were presented with simulated pedestrian movement through 24 virtual urban environments. The environments differed by density level, spatial configurations, vegetation, and commerce. Participants assessed each alternative through structured questionnaires. It has been found that the density and presence of vegetation and commerce in the urban area have a significant impact on the subject's well-being in urban environments. extreme levels of densification have a negative effect on subjects' feelings, but vegetation and commerce, especially at the high levels of density, can improve them. In this research we established the framework for planning principles that can improve urban densification processes. An understanding of the wellbeing of urban dwellers, and the parameters that can influence this, will help urban designers and planners in creating better urbanized future environments.

keywords The present paper is part of an ongoing research that deals with the inclusion of the effect of bio-luminescence as a substitute or complimentary light source in urban environments, with the main scope of reducing energy consumption for lighting in exterior areas. The paper discusses the selection of genetically modified transgenic plants for use in the climate of Greece and through bibliographic reference and preliminary experiments the modeling of a simulated light source that has the bio-luminescent properties of a specific plant. The modeled light source can then be used in lighting simulation software. Results, through the lighting simulation of the modeled transgenic plant in a case study scenario, support the fact that bio-luminescent plants can be used as supporting lighting agents in a suburban setting and eventually reduce energy consumption for lighting.

summary The project aims to investigate the possibility of VR in a combination of visualizing high-dimensional urban data. Our study proposes a data-based tool for urban planners, architects, and researchers to 3D visualize and experience an urban quarter. Users have a possibility to choose a specific part of a city according to urban data input like "buildings, streets, and landscapes". This data-based tool is based on an algorithm to translate data from Shapefiles (.sh) in a form of a virtual cube model. The tool can be scaled and hence applied globally. The goal of the study is to improve understanding of the connection and analysis of high-dimensional urban data beyond a two-dimensional static graph or three-dimensional image. Professionals may find an optimized condition between urban data through abstract simulation. By implementing this tool in the early design process, researchers have an opportunity to develop a new vision for extending and optimizing urban materials.

title Algorithmic investigation of the actual and virtual design space of historic hexagonal-based Islamic patterns

summary This research challenges the long-standing paradigm that considers compositional analysis to be the key to researching historical Islamic geometric patterns. Adopting a mathematical description shows that the historical focus on existing forms has left the relevant structural similarities between historical Islamic geometric patterns understudied. The research focused on the hexagonal-based Islamic geometric patterns and found that historical designs correlate to each other beyond just the formal dimension and that deep, morphological connections exist in the structures of historical singularities. Using historical evidence, this article identifies these connections and presents a categorization system that groups designs together based on their “morphogenetic” characteristics.

summary As we step into a new data-based information age, it is important to get citizens involved in the whole design process. Our research tries to build up a user-based urban information system by collecting the data of neighborhood land use preference from all the residents through gaming. The result of each individual decision will be displayed in real time using Augmented Reality technology, while the collective decision dataset will be stored, analyzed and learnt by computer, forming an optimal layout that meets the highest demand of the community. A pre-experiment has been conducted in a. an abstract virtual site and b. an existing site by collecting opinions from 122 participants, which shows that the system works well as a new method for collaborative design. This system has the potential to be applied both in realistic planning processes, as a negotiation toolkit, and in virtual urban forming, in the case of computer games or space colonization.

summary This paper presents data visualizations of an intelligent environment that were designed to serve the needs of two stakeholder groups: visitors wanting to understand how that environment operates, and developers interested in optimizing it. The visualizations presented here were designed for [Amatria], a sentient sculpture built by the Living Architecture Systems Group (LASG) at Indiana University Bloomington, IN, USA, in the spring of 2018. They are the result of an extended collaboration between LASG and the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center (CNS) at Indiana University. We introduce [Amatria], review related work on the visualization of smart environments and sentient architectures, and explain how the Data Visualization Literacy Framework (DVL-FW) can be used to develop visualizations of intelligent interactive systems (IIS) for these two stakeholder groups.

summary The process of overcoming the digital divide has led to the formation of common interest groups. Network communication has become not only a mean, but also a conditioning for the horizontal structure of groups that are also dedicated to transforming urban spaces. Known as processes of bottom-up urbanism, these groups add virtual layers to urban space, and acting in a cybrid way they make inseparable the actions that occur on the virtual or material environment. This research is dedicated to understanding the dynamics of communication in a Facebook group created in one of these bottom-up urbanism processes.

summary Even though architectural modelling radically evolved over the course of its history, the current integration of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) components in the corresponding design tasks is mostly limited to enhancing visualisation. Little to none of these tools attempt to tackle the challenge of modelling within immersive environments, that calls for new input modalities in order to move away from the traditional mouse and keyboard combination. In fact, relying on 2D devices for 3D manipulations does not seem to be effective as it does not offer the same degrees of freedom. We therefore present a solution that brings VR modelling capabilities to Grasshopper, a popular parametric design tool. Together with its associated proof-of-concept application, our extension offers a glimpse at new perspectives in that field. By taking advantage of them, one can edit geometries with real-time feedback on the generated models, without ever leaving the virtual environment. The distinctive characteristics of VR applications provide a range of benefits without obstructing design activities. The designer can indeed experience the architectural models at full scale from a realistic point-of-view and truly feels immersed right next to them.

summary Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been proposed to be additional architectural design mediums for at least 25 years (Dagit, 1993). Despite rapid technical and technological development, it has not been adopted into architectural design practices as compared to academia and research. Surveys from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and Royal Institutes of British Architects (RIBA) demonstrate the state of architectural practices; 72% of architects and 65% of architects respectively are not using any kind of virtual, augmented, or mixed reality in their practices(RIBA and Microsoft, 2018; Hampson, 2020). In this paper, the authors investigate the state of practices, issues, challenges, and opportunities of the utilization of virtual, augmented, and mixed realities in six architectural practices in the Danish context. Three of the practices are large architectural practices, one medium-sized practice specializing in institutional, healthcare and cultural architecture, and one firm designing private family houses, kindergartens, daycares and places for people with disability and, one experimental design studio. All these practices have used VR/AR in their projects to various degrees. In recent years Danish architectural practices have been involved in various VR/AR-based exhibitions, demonstrations, and tool developments to promote the usage of the same in design practice. Through a set of qualitative interviews with personnel from key architectural practices, the authors would like to demonstrate the present state of practices. The investigation explores the usage of VR and AR in Danish architecture practices by identifying challenges and opportunities regarding skill levels, architectural typology, use cases, toolchains, and workflow and shows similarities and differences between traditional and VR-based design processes. The main findings show how VR/AR-based visualization helps architects to perceive spatiality and also ushers creativity through immersion and overlays.

summary Virtual reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality is making the headlines in the newspapers and magazines today. But unlike 25 years ago when the first VR rage started with the first Cave Automatic Virtual Environments (CAVE) infrastructures VR is now a technique that is available at very low costs.Especially the recent advances and developments in low cost VR hardware mainly the Head mounted displays (HMD), in particular those that use mobile phones but also the PC based systems like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive together with recent software developments allow this change. Naturally this is based on the interest of the Gaming Industry and the big players in the smartphone industry. But at the moment there are nearly no tools for architects available within these systems. In our point of view there is the big potential that these technologies can give new opportunities to architects and designers to use VR and AR as part of their design toolbox and not only as a presentation tool. For us this is the most important aspect. In our projects we therefore try to develop a workflow that can be easily used even without programming and scripting skills.

summary Urban planning is composed of actions that bring together actors and diverse interests and, therefore, many obstacles. Participation is a fundamental factor for the success of these processes in search of fairer cities as it promotes the exacerbation of conflicts. This research investigates the role of Technologies and Information and Communication (TICs) in participatory processes. For this, virtual participation devices were raised and a connection was made from the established connections between governors and governed. Thus, the objective is to study the potential of ICT use in the construction of more coherent participatory processes.

summary Virtual reality environments have long been used in studies related to architecture simulation. The main objective of this paper is to measure the sense of presence that different virtual reality devices provide to users so as to evaluate their effectiveness when used to simulate real environments and draw conclusions of people's behaviors when using them. The study also aims at investigating, in a quantitative way, the influence of architectural elements on the comfort of use of a built environment, namely considering the fear of falling reported by adults while using these architectural elements. Using a between-subjects design randomly distributed between two experimental conditions (safe and unsafe), a set of three studies were conducted in three different virtual reality environments using a 5-sided-CAVE, a Powerwall or a Head Mounted Display. The study shows that immersive virtual reality devices give users a higher sense of presence than semi-immersive ones. One of the conclusions of the study is that a higher sense of presence helps to enhance the building spaces perceived impacts on users (in this case the fear of falling).
