title A gamified perspective in the learning of patrimonial architecture

summary The article reports the process of gamification applied to an educational context. This process had the goal to verify the potential of a virtual location, a loft in colonial style, in learning patrimonial architecture. Five stages were carried out: content research for the virtual location’s design; development of the game in Unreal Engine 4.16; application of the game and similar pedagogical content with two groups of students; comparative analysis of the different learning experiences of both groups of students; application of the EGameFlow with students who interacted with the game. The results showed that the tool has great pedagogical potential.

summary While the original Nine Square Grid problem, developed by John Hejduk and other influential educators, has shown many time-tested strengths; the value of the foundation studio project relies strongly on repetition and iteration. This activity oftentimes can be tedious when executed using traditional media. To expand upon the pedagogical goals of the original Nine Square Grid problem,we developed a virtual reality tool titled 'Nine Cube VR.' This tool expands upon the pedagogical goals of the original Nine Square Grid problem. Our tool takes advantage of immersive technology and its capacity to maximize object and spatial presence to aid in teaching beginning design students. Using the Unity game engine for development, zSpace Virtual/Augmented Reality desktop monitor and the HTC Vive head-mounted display, we created a multi-platform, easy-to-use kit-of-parts to educate beginning design students in architecture and interior design foundation design concepts.

Methodologically, the article is the result of both a bibliographical research and an empirical research, from which, in contemporary times, is evidenced the strengthening of flexible, collaborative, creative and innovative processes, prevailing premises in the maker movement.

summary Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) provide designers with new visual mediums through which to communicate their designs. There is great potential for these mediums to positively augment current visual communication methods by improving remote collaboration. Enabling designers to interact with familiar computational tools through external virtual interfaces would allow them to both calibrate design parameters and visualise parametric outcomes from within the same immersive virtual environment. The current research outlines a workflow for parametric manipulation and mesh replication between immersive applications developed in the Unity game engine and McNeel's Grasshopper plugin. This paper serves as a foundation for future research into integrating design tools with external VR and AR applications in an effort of enhancing remote collaborative designs.

summary The last three decades have witnessed the explosion of technology and its impact on the architecture discipline which has drastically changed the methods of design. New techniques such as Agent-based modeling (ABM) and Virtual Reality (VR) have been widely implemented in architectural and urban design domains, yet the potential integration between these two methods remains arguably unexploited. The investigation in this paper aims to probe the following questions: How can architects and urban designers be informed more comprehensively by melding ABM and VR techniques at the preliminary/conceptual design stage? Which platform is considered more appropriate to facilitate a user-friendly system and reduces the steep learning curve? And what are the potential benefits of this approach in architectural education, particularly for the design studio environment? With those questions, we proposed a prototype in Unity, a multi-platform development tool that originated from the game industry, to simulate and visualize pedestrian behaviors in urban environments with immersive design experience and tested it in a scenario-based case study. This approach has also been further tested in an architectural design studio, demonstrating its technical feasibility as well as the potential contributions to the pedagogy.

summary To assess an environmental design, augmented and diminished reality (AR/DR) have a potential to build a consensus more smoothly through the landscape simulation of new design visualization of the items to be assessed, such as the green view index. However, the current system is still considered to be impractical because it does not provide complete user experience. Thus, we aim to improve the robustness of the AR/DR system and to integrate the estimation of the green view index into the AR/DR system on a game engine. Further, we achieve an improved stable tracking by eliminating the outliers of the tracking reference points using the random sample consensus (RANSAC) method and by defining the tracking reference points over an extensive area of the AR/DR display. Additionally, two modules were implemented, among which one module is used to solve the occlusion problem while the other is used to estimate the green view index. The novel integrated AR/DR system with all modules was developed on the game engine. A mock design project was developed in an outdoor environment for simulation purposes, thereby verifying the applicability of the developed system.

summary This paper discusses the ability to apply machine learning to the combinatorial design-assembly at the scale of a building to urban form. Connecting the historical lines of discrete automata in computer science and formal studies in architecture this research contributes to the field of additive material assemblies, aggregative architecture and their possible upscaling to urban design. The following case studies are a preparation to apply deep-learning on the computational descriptions of urban form. Departing from the game Go as a testbed for the development of deep-learning applications, an equivalent platform can be designed for architectural assembly. By this, the form of a building is defined via the overlap between separate building parts. Building on part-relations, this research uses mereology as a term for a set of recursive assembly strategies, integrated into the design aspects of the building parts. The models developed by research by design are formally described and tested under a digital simulation environment. The shown case study shows the process of how to transform geometrical elements to architectural parts based merely on their compositional aspects either in horizontal or three-dimensional arrangements.

summary Virtual Reality (VR) is being revived in major disciplines, including architecture. VR is no longer only employed for basic operations, such as construction of 3D models, dynamic renderings, closed-loop interaction, inside-out perspective and enhance sensory feedback. This paper explains how over the past twenty years technologies and software have evolved that a new eco-system for design processes have risen. This paper discusses how students made full use of both software and equipment in the whole design process; from ideas exploration to site analysis to form generation to design realization. Students have been exposed to a whole range of digital software tools in the beginning. As most of them were already familiar with modelling software, they have in particular been introduced to animation software, game engines and even 3D documentation software such as photogrammetry. Most importantly, they were led to IVE. The paper points out the benefits of adopting such methodology and the difficulties faced by the students at the various stages of the design process.

summary The paper suggests virtual reality (VR) as an architectural medium on the continuum of visionary architectural drawings of the past centuries. It argues that architecture and contemporary videogames engage with and share very similar concerns and aesthetic sensibilities. The potential of VR to develop designs and spatial configurations impossible to construct in physical reality but perfectly perceivable by our sensory apparatus, uncovers a latent domain of spatial aesthetics that architects can experiment with, develop and harness. The latter half of the paper discusses an experimental master studio module developed at the Institute of Architecture and Media of TU Graz, in which architecture students were called to develop interactive spatiotemporal environments in the VR videogame medium.

summary With recent advancements in VR (Virtual Reality) technology in the past year, it has emerged as a new paradigm in visualization and immersive HMI (Human-machine Interface). On the other hand, in the past decades, BIM (Building Information Modelling) has emerged as the new standard of implementing construction projects and is quickly becoming a norm than just a co-ordination tool in the AEC industry.Visualization of the digital data in BIM plays an important role as it is the primary communication medium to the project participants, where VR can offer a new dimension of experiencing BIM and improving the collaboration of various stakeholders of a project. There are both open source and commercial solutions to extend visualization of a BIM project in VR, but so far, there are no complete solutions that offer a pure IFC format based solution, which makes the VR integration vendor neutral. This work endeavors to develop a concept for a vendor-neutral BIM-VR integration with bi-directional data exchange in order to extend VR as a collaboration tool than a mere visualization tool in the BIM ecosystem.

title Experiencing historical buildings through digital computer games

summary This study aims to demonstrate the value of experiencing historical buildings through the digital game–based learning method. A three-dimensional computer game was developed to assess the digital game–based learning method as a supportive hypermedia tool in architectural education. The computer game features interactive game missions that enable students to get a close-up experience of the buildings. As part of the study, an experiment was conducted comparing the digital game–based learning method against other traditional methods in learning about historical buildings. The results of the study show that the digital game–based learning method can serve as a support for lecturing on historical buildings to help improve students’ learning experience.

summary The rise of platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and Uber, initially celebrated as part of a disruptive new era of the internet, has slowly been reassessed as a problematic and unregulated form of twenty-first-century info-capitalism that contributes to inequality, mistrust, and user polarization. The internet has become a place for content creation, not only consumption, and the content freely created by the network of users has defined a self-organizing system of ad-hoc audiences following echo chambers organized through artificial intelligence, which amplifies previously identified trends. While a large portion of the content created by users seems to be aimed at personal forms of entertainment, a few remarkable projects, such as Wikipedia, have allowed hundreds of users to contribute to a collective goal. While we can observe that the platform model has appeared in diverse disciplines, allowing the creation of content from news articles to music, we have not seen the emergence of a robust design platform intended to proliferate and advance the discipline of architecture.

This paper makes the case that video game technology and its audiences have reached a state of technical capability that could allow for architectural platforms to emerge, one in which players could learn, create, and share architectural designs. Such a platform comes with a series of ethical imperatives, questions of value proposition, and liabilities, as well as a high potential to communicate and proliferate architectural knowledge and know-how. Common’hood, currently under development, will be used as a case study to engage the development of an ethical architectural platform that develops a proposition towards authorship, ownership, and collective engagement.

summary This paper presents a way to predict people's interest in a public space based on a space's "attractiveness" as a movement attractor. Two generative systems are integrated into the prediction model. The Cellular Automata (CA) is the core of simulation engine and the Shape Grammars (SG) is a descriptive language for the CA rules. Both, CA and SG exhibit complementary features counteracting each other's drawbacks. Having translated social behaviour into a set of rules, the CA algorithm applies them to distinguish people's leisure interest attractors from places with a minor attractiveness. The tool is designed to be used at various urban scales by city planners and venture capitalists. It is dedicated towards the early stage of planning process to evaluate the future attractiveness of places. The case study is located in the central district of Lisbon, Bairro Alto. One of the important aspects are description of the rules with SG and interpretation of the CA results. Implemented in Python for Grasshopper and visualised in Rhinoceros3D. The article does not present the final solution, rather is an experimental attempt to interpret and describe the already explored urban context of Cellular Automata.

The objective was the virtual reconstruction of part of the port area of the city, as it was about 100 years. The methods include a historical survey of the site, visits to obtain photographs and measurements, as well as the digital reconstruction of buildings (external faces only). The experiment used Sketchup software for modeling, Unity 3D for rendering and navigation, and HTC Vive glasses for immersion.

summary It is well known that Math learning processes common used within elementary school phases are not necessarily competent. Students are rarely capable of relating acquired knowledge with day by day activities and memorizing practices are encouraged by teachers. On the other hand, the use of games during learning development is an important alternative that brings interest, playful and real knowledge of content assimilation. This paper describes how digital fabrication tools were used by students to develop and build game prototypes as an option on Math learning. The experience was accomplished through a Mobile Digital Fabrication Lab as an instrument that brought these technologies to students.

summary The emergence of a data space (Big Data and IoT) and, with it, the proliferation of communication means, led many scholars to describe the city through a series of concepts like the informational city, the intelligent city or the cybercity, all of them being characterized by a strong networked consciousness (Castells, Graham, Boyer). The hypothesis of this paper is that game methodology is now gaining momentum and can act as enabler of smarter communities by an increasing access to data infrastructures. This is why the city can be seen as a series of connected playgrounds where interactive tools can support citizen engagement and decision making processes. It does so by going through relevant theoretical background on gamification in the urban context and best practices, to finally describe two student projects developed at CHORA Conscious City, TU Berlin. The two projects are experimental and explore the capabilities of interactive tools in order to support planning processes.

summary This article presents a project-based research study using a new hybrid augmented reality platform called the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface. Using the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface as a mixture of different software and hardware platforms, ranging from design/modeling software, simulation engine, and an augmented reality application, the designer would be able to evaluate the possibilities/limitations of the fabrication, in real time and as part of the design. This method advances designer’s understanding of the fabrication equipment as an input for the design decision-making process. This article demonstrates the potential of a virtual/actual hybridized platform as a new medium to design, simulate, and evaluate, in order to enhance the digital design and fabrication. Introducing the possibility of real-time communication between the digital design software and the fabrication platforms as well as the augmented reality simulation of the fabrication process, the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface enables designers to test the fabrication process with the fabrication equipment in the early stages of the design process. This method makes it possible to move beyond the traditional limitations of machines pursuing “un-expected creativity,” without any additional time or cost for the process. Using the virtual material for fabrication, the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface reduces the time and cost of having multiple iterations and encourages the hands-on experimental use of the fabrication tool (in this article robotic/computer numeric control milling) not only as a production tool but also as a design study tool.
