summary This research explores utilizing Cellular Automata patterns as climate-adaptive dynamic shading systems to mitigate the undesirable impacts by excessive solar penetration in cooling-dominant climates. The methodological procedure is realized through two main phases. The first evaluates all 256 Elementary Cellular Automata possible rules to elect the ones with good visual and random patterns, to ensure an equitable distribution of the natural daylight in internal spaces. Based on the newly developed hourly-based metrics, simulations are conducted in the second phase to evaluate the Cellular Automata controlled dynamic shadings performance, and formalize the adaptive façade variation logic that maximizes daylighting and minimizes energy demand.

summary This paper presents a construction system which offers an efficient materialization method for double-curved gridshells. This results in an active-bending system of controlled deflections. The latter system embeds its construction manual into the geometry of its components. Thus it can be used as a self-formation process. The two presented gridshell structures are composed of geometry-induced, variable stiffness elements. The latter elements are able to form programmed shapes passively when gravitational loads are applied. Each element consists of two layers and a slip zone between them. The slip allows the element to be flexible when it is straight and increasingly stiffer while its curvature increases. The amplitude of the slip defines the final deformation of the element. As a result, non-uniform deformations can be obtained with uniform cross sections and loads. When the latter elements are used in grid configurations, self-formation of initially planar surfaces emerges. The presented system eliminates the need for electromechanical equipment since it relies on material properties and hierarchical geometrical configurations. Wood, as a flexible and strong material, has been used for the construction of the prototypes. The fabrication of the timber laths has been done via CNC industrial milling processes. The comparison between the initial digital design and the resulting geometry of the physical prototypes is reviewed in this paper. The aim is to inform the design and fabrication process with performance data extracted from the prototypes. Finally, the scalability of the system shows its potential for large-scale applications, such as transformable structures.

summary This paper examines a novel, integrated and collaborative approach to design and fabrication, enabled through Mixed Reality. In a bespoke fabrication process, the design is controlled and altered by users in holographic space, through a custom, multi-modal interface. Users input is live-streamed and channeled to 3D modelling environment,on-demand robotic fabrication and AR-guided assembly. The Holographic Interface is aimed at promoting man-machine collaboration. A bespoke pipeline translates hand gestures and audio into CAD and numeric fabrication. This enables non-professional participants engage with a plethora of novel technology. The feasibility of Mixed Reality for architectural workflow was tested through an interactive installation for the makeCity Berlin 2018 festival. Participants experienced with on-demand design, fabrication an AR-guided assembly. summary Visibility plays an important role in perception and use of an urban design, and thus often becomes a target of design analysis. This work presents a fast method of evaluating various visibility-based design characteristics, such as isovists or insolation exploiting the GPU rendering pipeline and compute shaders. The proposed method employs a two-stage algorithm on each point of interest. First, it projects the visible space around a vantage point onto an equirectangular map. Second, it folds the map using a flexibly defined function into a single value that is associated with the vantage point. Being executed on a grid of points in a 3D scene, it can be visualized as a heat map or utilized by another algorithm for further design analysis. The developed system provides nearly real-time analysis tools for an early-stage design process to a broad audience via web services.

summary This paper argues for alternative methods for the in-situ integration of robotics in architectural construction. Rather than promoting off-site pre-fabrication through industrial robot applications, it advocates for suspended, light-weight, cable-driven robots that allow flexible and safe onsite implementation. This paper uses the topic of large-scale inflatable architectural realisation as a study case to test the application of such a robot, here with a laser-cutter as end-effecter. This preliminary study covers the design, development, prototyping, and practical testing of an inherently scale-less cable-driven laser-cutter setup. This setup allows for the non-size specific cutting of inflatable structures' components which can be designed with common physics simulation engines. The developed robotic proof of concept forms the basis for several further and future study possibilities that merge the field of architectural design and implementation with mechanical and automation engineering.

summary Advances in construction automation have primarily focused on creating heavy machines to accomplish repetitive tasks. While this approach is valuable in an assembly-line context, it does not always translate well for the diverse terrain and dynamic nature of construction sites. As a result, the use of automation in the architectural assembly has lagged far behind other industries. To address the challenges of construction-site assembly, this project suggests an alternative technique that uses a fl eet of smaller robots working in parallel. The proposed method, which is inspired by the construction techniques of insect colonies, has several advantages over the use of larger machines. It allows for much greater on-site fl exibility and portability. It is also easy to scale the operation, by adding or removing additional units as needed. The use of multiple small robots provides operational redundancy that can adapt to the loss of any particular machine. These advantages make the technology particularly suitable for construction in hazardous or inaccessible areas. The use of assembly robots also opens new horizons for design creativity, allowing architects to explore new ideas that would be unwieldy and expensive to construct using traditional techniques. In our tests, we used a team of small mobile robots to fold 2D laser-cut stock into 3D curved structures, and then assemble these units into larger interlocked forms.

summary Advances in autonomous control of object-scale robots, both anthropomorphic and vehicular, are posing new human–machine interface challenges. In architecture, very few examples of autonomous inhabitable robotic architecture exist. A number of factors likely contribute to this condition, among them the scale and cost of architectural adaptive systems, but on a more fundamental conceptual level also the questions of how architectural robots would communicate with their human inhabitants. The Flexing Room installation is a room-sized actuated active-bending skeleton structure. It uses rudimentary social feedback by counting people to inform its behavior in the form of actuated poses of the room enclosure. An operational full-scale prototype was constructed and tested. To operate it no geometric-based simulation was used; the only communication between computer and structure was in sending values for the air pressure settings and in gathering sensor feedback. The structure’s physical state was resolved through the embodied computation of its interconnected parts, and the people-counting sensor feedback influences its next action. Future work will explore the development of learning processes to improve the human–machine coexistence in space.

summary Well known metaphors play an explanatory role in human-computer interaction (HCI) and support users in understanding an unfamiliar object with references to a familiar object, for example the desktop metaphor. Metaphors can also support designers in forming and exploring new concepts during the process of designing. We present metaphors that establish user expectations and provide guidance for new design concepts while integrating interactive technology in buildings to enable human-building interaction (HBI). HBI is a research area that studies how HCI research and practice provides opportunities for interactive buildings. Interactive experiences in architecture can be characterized by three metaphorical concepts: HBI as Device (user-centered view), HBI as Robot (building-centered view), and HBI as Friend (activity centered-view). These metaphors provide a tool for architects and HBI designers to explore designs that engage occupants' existing mental models from previous HCI experiences. We expand on each metaphor using analogical reasoning to define exploratory design spaces for HBI.

summary This paper presents the development of an integrative and adaptive robotic fabrication process for the production of wooden-based segmented shells of variable thickness. A material and construction process is presented whereby an industrial robot with a two-degree of freedom end-effector acts as active form-work, positioning flexible strips of plywood so they can be assembled into a structurally performative configuration and then filled with a polyurethane expandable foam. The resulting material system is a structurally performative and doubly curved sandwich composite which performs well in bending. This paper discusses the construction process and the material system, methods for structural analysis, an adaptive robotic fabrication process, as well as a computational design tool which integrates material constraints, robotic constraints, and structural performance. The resulting construction system expands the design possibilities for robotic fabrication in wood, particularly as a viable material system for implementation directly in an on-site condition.

summary This article presents a project-based research study using a new hybrid augmented reality platform called the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface. Using the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface as a mixture of different software and hardware platforms, ranging from design/modeling software, simulation engine, and an augmented reality application, the designer would be able to evaluate the possibilities/limitations of the fabrication, in real time and as part of the design. This method advances designer’s understanding of the fabrication equipment as an input for the design decision-making process. This article demonstrates the potential of a virtual/actual hybridized platform as a new medium to design, simulate, and evaluate, in order to enhance the digital design and fabrication. Introducing the possibility of real-time communication between the digital design software and the fabrication platforms as well as the augmented reality simulation of the fabrication process, the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface enables designers to test the fabrication process with the fabrication equipment in the early stages of the design process. This method makes it possible to move beyond the traditional limitations of machines pursuing “un-expected creativity,” without any additional time or cost for the process. Using the virtual material for fabrication, the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface reduces the time and cost of having multiple iterations and encourages the hands-on experimental use of the fabrication tool (in this article robotic/computer numeric control milling) not only as a production tool but also as a design study tool.

summary This paper examines how mediated translations that embrace indeterminacy - from design to fabrication - can enhance material and tactile explorations. It investigates a dialogue between a digital environment that supports the design process, and fabrication processes that combine tools that are both precise (the robot) and indeterminate (casting/forming devices) in their essential functions. We present a research inquiry into this issue by providing a reflective account of a robotics-aided framework for the fabrication of inexact geometries using reconfigurable pin tools (RPT). These tools, with their inherent indeterminacy and variability, were used as a base mold for casting blocks in concrete and plaster. The central thesis of this paper is that a non-linear fabrication process - one imbued with variability rather than deterministically controlled for formulaic production/outcome - becomes a potent generator of novel forms. By focusing on process, rather than on the product of design, designers can subvert the geometrical control inherent in a digital-material output, thus favoring discovery over order and material sensitivity over determinacy - essential qualities in progressive architecture practice.

summary Low-cost programmable materials such as wood have been utilized to replace mechanical actuators of adaptive architectural skins. Although research investigated ways to understand the hygroscopic response of wood to variations in humidity levels, there are still no clear methods developed to track and analyze such response. This paper introduces a computational method to analyze, track and store the hygroscopic response of wood through image analysis and continuous tracking of angular measurements in relation to time. This is done through a computational closed loop that links the smart material interface (SMI) representing hygroscopic response with a digital and tangible interface comprising a Flex sensor, Arduino kit, and FireFly plugin. Results show no significant difference between the proposed sensing mechanism and conventional image analysis tracking systems. Using the described method, acquiring real-time data can be utilized to develop learning mechanisms and predict the controlled motion of programmable material for adaptive architectural skins.

summary Especially in the film industry, architectural spaces away from Euclidean geometry are brought to foreground. The best environment in which such spaces can be designed, is undoubtedly the 3D modeling environment. In this study, an experimental study was carried out on the creation of alternative spaces with undergraduate architectural students. Via using 3D modeling and various simulation techniques in the Maya software, students created spaces, which were away from the traditional architectural spaces. Thus, in addition to learning the 3D modeling software, architectural students learned to use animation and simulation as a part of design, not just as a presentation tool, and opening up new horizons for non-standard spaces was provided.

summary In the summer of 2018, our collaboration was awarded a University Design Fellowship from the Exhibit Columbus organization to design, fabricate, and build a large pavilion in Columbus, Indiana as part of a biannual contemporary architecture exhibition. Our proposal for the competition was a pavilion that would double as an ecological education center. Our inspiration for this program was triggered in part by our reading of Jane Bennett’s materialist philosophy outlined in her book Vibrant Matter (2009). Through Bennett’s lens, our design rendered our site’s context as an animate field, replete with pre-existing material composites that we wanted to celebrate through a series of displays, information boards, and artificial lighting. In this, the installation would feature samples of local plants, minerals, and rocks, indigenous to Southern Indiana.

summary The design and construction of the complex, irregularly shaped, and curvilinear building forms are also known as freeform architecture, have gained an interest form architects and engineers. This paper presents how freeform façade designs are defined with its curvilinear geometric characteristics and the systematic approach that is used to design and implement them. The proposed method incorporates product design and integral façade construction approach at AFA Cultural Center freeform façade implementation. Therefore, the paper aims to improve the viability of the proposed method and decreasing the gap between the other disciplines and architects in a systematic way without losing the creativity of the architects.

This project explores design processes laying on the use of non-linear procedures and experiments with Self-Organizing Map (SOM), as neural networks algorithms, to generate geometries. All processes are applied to a set of models representing classic sculpture, whose characteristics are encoded by the SOM process. The result of it is a set of new geometry resembling characteristics from the original references. This method produces hybrid forms that acquire characteristics from several input references. The resulting hybrid entities are intended to be non-trivial solutions to specific design situations, so far, at the stage of this research, mainly formal requirements.

summary The utilization of point cloud as a 3D laser scanning product has reached across multi-disciplines in terms of data processing, data visualization, and data analysis. This study particularly investigates further the use of typical attributes of raw point cloud data consisting of XYZ (position information), RGB (colour information) and I (intensity information). By exploring the optical and thermal properties of the given point cloud data, it aims at compensating the material and texture information that is usually remained behind by architects during the conceptual design stage. Calculation of the albedo, emissivity and the reflectance values from the existing context specifically direct the architects to predict the type of materials for the proposed design in order to keep the balance of the surrounding Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. Therefore, architects can have a comprehensive analysis of the existing context to deal with the microclimate condition before a design decision phase.

summary Proxemics was first defined by Edward. T. Hall as being the relations between non-verbal communications in a determined space. This paper aims to promote a theoretical interpolation between diverse study fields with new contemporary urbanism paradigms supported by technology and anthropological relations. In this optics, to provide a better understanding of possible characteristics within the proxemics theory can translate into a better spatial understanding and city improvement from an analysis methodology using digital tools.
