keywords Hotwire cutting of Styrofoam or Polystyrene has been a popular tool for developing fast prototypes by the architectural community. The introduction of multi-axis industrial robots in the architectural curriculum, and the enhancement of the design to fabrication process by software bridging the gap, provided an alternative meaning to the traditional mostly representational process of hotwire cutting.This paper sets out to document and assess the procedural methodology and the results of a series of integrated design to fabrication experiments that took place in the Institut für Experimentelle Architektur-Hochbau. By channelling design intention towards a component assembly for a translucent effect, students were asked to utilise industrial robots to fabricate and prototype via hotwire cutting, designs that refer to architectural elements. These elements, mainly due to their scale and the commercial availability of bulk Styrofoam panels, can lead to functional or ornamental representations of discrete elements, which can be assembled together as part of a greater design.

summary Sci-Fi architecture, both as digital or physical representations, despite their inherent intricacy, lack the spatial depth of a structured interior, material definition or program information. This discrepancy, combined with the plethora of available sci-fi motifs, inspired the development of an integrated teaching approach with the academic objective to utilize computational methods for analysis, reproduction and composition of generative building skins, and consequently architecture, which aims to be 'outside of this world' as a sci-fi design quality-enriched result of our reality. The proposed methodology is implemented at the Spaceship Architecture Design Studio at the University of Innsbruck. Its capacity to achieve a successful assimilation of design computation in the curriculum is subsequently assessed by the documentation and quantitative/qualitative evaluation of the designs developed during two academic years, in line with a generative facade articulation schema, without however undermining the rest of the virtues of tectonic spaces. The introduction of a theme like sci-fi where the design objective is not clearly defined, is examined in comparison to similar approaches, towards the corroboration of the pedagogical method proposed.

summary There is a typical symbiotic relationship between behavior and space. Design and evaluation of space are also inseparable from people's behavioral needs. Therefore, the study of behavior patterns can be regarded as the process of exploring the relationship between human and space. Traditional behavioral research lacks precise micro-individual data and analytical tools to express complex environments, and is more inclined to macro and qualitative static analysis. With the maturity of indoor positioning technology, the use of big data as a medium to quantitatively study the laws of behavior has gradually penetrated into the micro-level of indoor space. This paper begins with a brief introduction of the behavioral performance research process in history. The paper then describes the method that constructs the observation, quantification and visualization process of behavior data by using UWB positioning technology and visualization implementation system through an on-site experiment of office space. The last part of this paper discusses the establishment of spatial redesign method by mining the behavior data, and translating the results into spatial attributes.

summary Basic design education, as an introduction of design principles to novice students, has two-way of teaching which are design thinking and professional training, since Bauhaus. Initiated in 2009, the Computation-based Basic Design Studio creates a common ground through discussions between students, academics, and professionals from various backgrounds. In this paper, the implementation of parallel courses named Computation-based Basic Design Studio and Design Geometry is discussed upon final assignment of the first semester- New Year's Lanterns. The given assignment structured as a cyclic process through constant feedback between geometric relations, material performance, and, joinery details to achieve novel outcomes that exceed the preliminarily set structural criteria. In relation to individual processes and outcomes of the final assignment, observed tendencies developed by students', at the end of their first-term in design education, will be discussed as final remarks.

summary Timber is one of the most sustainable, renewable products, and coupled with computational tools has the potential to be redefined as a digital-age material. The research outlined in this paper employs contemporary digital fabrication techniques utilising a robotic arm to develop complex, CNC based parametric connections for engineered timber. While CNC joinery that utilizes three - five axis machining capabilities is increasingly common, the introduction of the six-axis robot as a machining tool provides greater freedom of movement and a wider range of complex procedures. This research returns to traditional Japanese timber craft, which offers unique structural and sustainable advantages. Using computational tools, new complex parametric connections suitable for contemporary fabrication will be designed and contribute to a library of joints suitable mass-customised in non-standard timber architecture.

summary This article presents a specific description and findings in teaching architectural computing using 3D modeling software at the undergraduate level of Interior Design Studies (second academic year). This paper is mainly concerned with the analysis of issues and advantages resulting from teaching design through the "modeling first" in the overall design practice. By "the reversed 'in steps' design procedure" we recognize the design process encompassing the idea of "form first".We introduce BIM based modeling to Interior Design students at the undergraduate level through "in steps" procedure, which is the opposite to typical CAD procedures. With 3D model based method, the beginning of the design process by making the abstract, conceptual designs, and later translating it into design solutions are made possible. The use of BIM technology not only gives architecture, engineering, and construction professions tools to more efficient collaboration but also provides inventors such as architects with complete and integrated tools for the entire design development.

summary This paper introduces the concept of Virtual Place-making through Urban Gamification for architects and designers as a potential application and approach in architecture and urban design. This introduction will be achieved through introducing Augmented Play and Urban Gamification; identifying the urban gamification components based on the game Pokémon Go; exploring the effect of augmented reality games on the experience of architectural and urban spaces; identifying the role of augmented urban gamification in rediscovering cities and redefining architectural spaces. summary The paper presents the concept and results of a seminar that addresses the intersecting fields of architecture and urbanism, data and information visualization as well as information technology. In the first part of the paper, an introduction to the seminar topic and relevance in the context of architectural education and practice is given. Subsequently, the course concept, the learning contents and the corresponding learning objectives are presented. In the second part, selected student projects are shown as exemplary course results. In the conclusion, the results of the seminar for students, teachers and research implications are discussed. The overall aim of this publication is to draw on the experience gained in this field of education to offer starting points for others in developing similar teaching concepts and support for their implementation.

summary The paper describes the application of a standardised teaching method of digital fabrication in architecture. The introduction formulates a pedagogical problem and addresses both methodological and praxiological aspects of the teaching process based on design research. Next, the process is illustrated with a description of three digital fabrication courses where the teaching method was used. The initial implementation took place in 2016 at Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology. The author outlines the translation of theoretical work frame into teaching method, presents the course outcomes and provides a critical analysis of results. In 2017, a revised teaching method has been used two times, again at Faculty of Architecture at WUT and at Monash Art Design and Architecture. Both courses are described in a way analogous to the initial exploration. In consequence, the results of the same course conducted in different teaching, conditions are compared. In conclusion, the developed method is evaluated in relation to teaching outcomes.

This new paradigm has created tools and creative possibilities in the routine of several professionals. The Graphic Expression Department is responsible for disciplines that include the knowledge of Graphical Geometry and different approaches to graphically represent projects from different areas of knowledge. Thus, the present experiment presents a possibility of updating the teaching of representation from the introduction of Shape Grammar and through digital tools, in particular, the use of parametric design, visual programming and rapid prototyping.
