summary During the 1990s many architects, who dissociated from critical theory, were looking for new design methodologies that did not confine themselves as stylistic currents. One of these propractice movement is done by means of parametric design. Aiming to investigate the boundaries between methodology and style, this paper proposes to answer the question: does the parametric architecture constitute a new style, as Patrik Schumacher says? It reviews Heinrich Wölfflin concept of style in the contemporary context; it presents Imre Lakatos theory (methodology of scientific research programmes) and how Schumacher appropriates of it followed by a critical reflection on the limits of such appropriation.

summary This research investigates the effect of curvature, at a variety of scales, on the acoustic properties of glass. Plate glass, which has predictable and uniform acoustically reflective behavior, can be formed into curved surfaces through a combination of parametrically-driven auxetic pattern generation, CNC water-jet cutting, and controlled heat forming. When curved, plate glass becomes “activated” and complex acoustically-diffusive behavior emerges. The parametrically-driven auxetic perforation pattern allows the curvature to be altered and controlled across a formed pane of glass, and a correlation is demonstrated between the level of curvature and the extent of acoustically diffusive behavior. Beyond individual panels, curved panes can be aggregated to extend acoustic influence to the entire interior room condition, and the pace at which acoustic energy is distributed can be controlled. In this work the parameters surrounding the controlled slumping of glass are described, and room-sized formal and acoustic effects are studied using wave-based acoustic simulation techniques. This paper discusses the early stages of work in progress.

summary This paper approaches the insertion of an objectile in the homogeneous space of a school, looking to bring flexibility and responsiveness to assist a user with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The research concerns with photosensitivity, a problem faced by almost 25% of the children with autism (Miller-Horn; Spence; Takeoka, 2011). The study is based on the theories for ASD environments that speak of ‘sensorial perception’ and ‘thinking with imagery’ (Mostafa, 2008), and the coexistence of Sensory Design Theory and Neuro-Typical Method (Pomana, 2015). The result consists of a gadget developed in MIT App Inventor tool and a curtain that interact responsively through an Arduino code, for a new connection between the user and his surroundings.

summary According to one of the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2018), it is important for cities to be inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Therefore, it is necessary to prioritize pedestrians and promote active mobility, giving them priority and encouraging walking, as presented in the concepts of TOD (Transit-Oriented Development). Although the master plan suggests that areas located in the regional centrality of Belo Horizonte are enhancing active mobility, residents may still need to use individual or public transportation due to long distances when accessing basic services on foot. In peripheral areas of the city of Belo Horizonte, are there favorable walkability conditions for the residents? Thus, the aim of this research is to use digital technologies to investigate, through a parametric performative model, the quality of the existing routes, with a focus on the peripheral areas of the city. Based on the results obtained, it will be possible to conclude whether there are discrepancies between what is presented in the master plan and, ultimately, to identify potential solutions for the area based on metrics that qualify and enhance active mobility. These solutions may vary according to the specific needs of the location.

summary Beyond the benefits of standard documentation agreeance and project management coordination, many architects and other design professionals express concern over the limitation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) process may have on the design process, or better yet social responsibility or ecological benefit. For Living Wall facade exploration, this research suggests BIM is arguably an effective tool to support innovation in the design process, as well as promote collaboration between ecology and architecture disciplines. Ecological measures and data collection evidence further validates BIM procedural clarity and recognizes building façade exploration both technologically and environmentally.

summary Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been proposed to be additional architectural design mediums for at least 25 years (Dagit, 1993). Despite rapid technical and technological development, it has not been adopted into architectural design practices as compared to academia and research. Surveys from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and Royal Institutes of British Architects (RIBA) demonstrate the state of architectural practices; 72% of architects and 65% of architects respectively are not using any kind of virtual, augmented, or mixed reality in their practices(RIBA and Microsoft, 2018; Hampson, 2020). In this paper, the authors investigate the state of practices, issues, challenges, and opportunities of the utilization of virtual, augmented, and mixed realities in six architectural practices in the Danish context. Three of the practices are large architectural practices, one medium-sized practice specializing in institutional, healthcare and cultural architecture, and one firm designing private family houses, kindergartens, daycares and places for people with disability and, one experimental design studio. All these practices have used VR/AR in their projects to various degrees. In recent years Danish architectural practices have been involved in various VR/AR-based exhibitions, demonstrations, and tool developments to promote the usage of the same in design practice. Through a set of qualitative interviews with personnel from key architectural practices, the authors would like to demonstrate the present state of practices. The investigation explores the usage of VR and AR in Danish architecture practices by identifying challenges and opportunities regarding skill levels, architectural typology, use cases, toolchains, and workflow and shows similarities and differences between traditional and VR-based design processes. The main findings show how VR/AR-based visualization helps architects to perceive spatiality and also ushers creativity through immersion and overlays.

summary The goal of this paper is to present and discuss the design process of a intervention realized in a historic building placed in Campo Grande/MS, Brazil. The project had as premise the invitation to use, coexistence or contemplation in the previously degraded and unused space. The project was carried out through the partnership between the algo+ritmo research group from UFMS and the Casa de Ensaio, a non-profit organization. The main goal was that students of architecture and urbanism could use digital technologies to design, developt and executate the project, and also control the whole process from the beginning to the end.. Through the evaluation of the results, this paper reflects on procedures used in undergraduate courses seeking to contribute to the dissemination of other forms of design processes different from conventional ones.

title Printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic Multi-Bias Additive Manufacturing

summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary This paper discusses the authors’ experiences and lessons learned through designing and constructing small- and large-scale robotic prototypes and the fully integrated use of VR and AR for design. Also of focus here are the methodological tools utilized to implement this student-led research in an interdisciplinary educational environment, as well as the design explorations of Mars habitation systems. Through the systems engineering approach, students will generate ideas that may or may not make it to the final design development stage, but may potentially be valuable to future real exploration habitats and mission architectures. The final prototype allows an assessment of the focus parameters, which are the vessels’ transformation capacities and layout adaption. The design objective of this project is to examine strategies for commonality between an interplanetary vehicle (IPV) and a Mars surface habitat. The presented design proposals address this challenge to create a common habitation system in both habitats so that crew members will be familiar with the layout, function, and location throughout the expedition. The design tools operate at the intersection of architectural layout design, mechanics, and structural design, and use origami folding techniques and structural form-finding concepts to generate shell action rigidity. In addition, the project develops a strategy for mobility and transformation of the surface habitat prior to its transformed configuration. The value here lies in understanding lessons from this strategy for both the design process as well as efficiency and optimization in design as a model for terrestrial design.

summary From the “Edge of Chaos”, a mathematical space discovered by computer scientist Christopher Langton (1997), compelling behaviors originate that exhibit both degrees of organization and instability creating a continuous dance between order and chaos. This paper presents a project intended to make this complex theory tangible through an interactive installation based on metamaterial research which demonstrates emergent behavior using Cellular Automata (CA) techniques, illustrated through sound, light and motion. We present a multi-sensory narrative approach that encourages playful exploration and contemplation on perhaps the biggest questions of how life could emerge from the disorder of the universe.

We argue a way of creating intelligent architecture, not through classical Artificial Intelligence (AI), but rather through Artificial Life (ALife), embracing the aesthetic emergent possibilities that can spontaneously arise from this approach. In order to make these ideas of emergent life more tangible we present this paper in four integrated parts, namely: narrative, material, hardware and computation. The Edge of Chaos installation is an explicit realization of creating emergent systems and translating them into an architectural design. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of a custom CA for maximizing aesthetic impact while minimizing the live time of architectural kinetic elements.

summary This study argues that analysis of written content might be helpful to provide clues at a certain extent on the future directions of current research areas and the emergence of new study areas. In the scope of the study, the International Journal of Architectural Computing (IJAC) which has been a scientific platform covering many pioneer publications on education research in computer-aided architectural design (CAAD) field was selected as source content. Although the size of the source domain is limited, the analysis of abstracts and titles of 439 articles published in IJAC between 2003 and 2018 revealed promising results which can be examined under four characteristics: "constant", "emerging", "fading" and "solidifying" concepts. The tokens in the analysis process are words, phrases, topic nodes and links between topic nodes. The outcomes of this study might contribute to tracking the evolution of concepts their emergence or disusage in different time and contexts, and interrelations between different concepts.

summary Creative practice design research brings forth rich opportunities for the exploration of inter-domain connections between music and architecture. Through inter-disciplinary creative practice explorative project work founded on a methodology of improvisation on the digital drum kit, two stages of design research project work are outlined. In the first stage, a language of polyrhythmic drumming is parametrically spatialized as a reflective lens on an extant creative practice. From here, a new form of 'Spatial Improvisation' is explored, where conceptual spatial forms are generated from improvisations on the digital drum kit. This new musico-spatial design practice involves mediating a spatio-temporal-dynamical 'Y-Condition (Martin, 1994)' wherein temporal and dynamic design decisions translate from the musical domain into the spatial domain through 'spatial thinking-in-action'.

summary Machine learning algorithms have become widely embedded in many aspects of modern society. They have come to enhance systems, such as individualised marketing, social media services, and search engines. However, contrasting its growing ubiquity, the architectural industry has been comparatively resistant in its adoption; objectively one of the slowest industries to integrate with machine learning. Machine learning expertise can be separate from professionals in other fields; however, this separation can be a major hinderance in architecture, where interaction between the designer and the design facilitates the production of favourable outcomes. To bridge this knowledge gap, this research suggests that the solution lies with architectural education. Through the development of a novel educative framework, the research aims to teach architecture students how to implement machine learning. Exploration of student-centred pedagogical strategies was used to inform the conceptualisation of the educative module, which was subsequently implemented into an undergraduate computational design studio, and finally evaluated on its ability to effectively teach designers machine learning. The developed educative module represents a step towards greater technological adoption in the architecture industry.

summary Machine learning is yet to make a significant impact in the field of architecture and design. However, with the combination of artificial neural networks, a biologically inspired machine learning paradigm, and deep learning, a hierarchical subsystem of machine learning, the predictive capabilities of machine learning processes could prove a valuable tool for designers. Yet, the inherent knowledge gap between the fields of architecture and computer science has meant the complexity of machine learning, and thus its potential value and applications in the design of the built environment remain little understood. To bridge this knowledge gap, this paper describes the development of a learning tool directed at architects and designers to better understand the inner workings of machine learning. Within the parametric modelling environment of Grasshopper, this research develops a framework to express the mathematic and programmatic operations of neural networks in a visual scripting language. This offers a way to segment and parametrise each neural network operation into a basic expression. Unpacking the complexities of machine learning in an intermediary software environment such as Grasshopper intends to foster the broader adoption of artificial intelligence in architecture.

summary This research in progress investigates a design and fabrication method of an adaptable and programmable composite material in an embodied computation system. It develops a workflow for a behavior-based model, the exploration of the morpho-space associated with the combinatorial assembly and the actuation of soft elements. The aggregation of individually actuatable and soft units in a system creates a large potential regarding adaptability, flexibility and reconfigurability, through a non-rigid and non-mechanical system. The cells are developed through a process of prototyping on origami and auxetic pattern inspired soft robotic elements. Every soft cell is pneumatically actuated through a negative pressure environment. The computational simulation is informed by the prototyping process and its findings. The simulation-based design of such an assembled system allows prediction of the aggregated shape and outputs a sequencing table, describing the actuation status of every cell and can create a tool to communicate between material and computational system

summary This paper discusses the ability to apply machine learning to the combinatorial design-assembly at the scale of a building to urban form. Connecting the historical lines of discrete automata in computer science and formal studies in architecture this research contributes to the field of additive material assemblies, aggregative architecture and their possible upscaling to urban design. The following case studies are a preparation to apply deep-learning on the computational descriptions of urban form. Departing from the game Go as a testbed for the development of deep-learning applications, an equivalent platform can be designed for architectural assembly. By this, the form of a building is defined via the overlap between separate building parts. Building on part-relations, this research uses mereology as a term for a set of recursive assembly strategies, integrated into the design aspects of the building parts. The models developed by research by design are formally described and tested under a digital simulation environment. The shown case study shows the process of how to transform geometrical elements to architectural parts based merely on their compositional aspects either in horizontal or three-dimensional arrangements.

summary The relationship between clay manufacturing and architectural design has a long trajectory that has been explored since the early 2000s. From a 3D printing or assembly perspective, using clay in combination with automated processes in architecture to achieve computational design solutions is well established. (Yuan, Leach & Menges, 2018). Craft-based clay art, however, still lacks effective computational design integration. With the improvement of Augmented Reality (AR) technologies (Driscoll et al., 2017) and the appearance of digital platforms, new opportunities to integrate clay manufacturing and computational design have emerged. The concept of digitally transferring crafting skills, using holographic guidance and machine learning, could make clay crafting accessible to more workers while creating the potential to share and exchange digital designs via an open-source manufacturing platform. In this context, this research project explores the potential of integrating computational design and clay crafting using AR. Moreover, it introduces a platform that enables AR guidance and the digital transfer of fabrication skills, allowing even amateur users with no prior making experience to produce complex clay components.

title Deep learning in design workflows: The elusive design pixel

summary The recent wave of developments and research in the field of deep learning and artificial intelligence is causing the border between the intuitive and deterministic domains to be redrawn, especially in computer vision and natural language processing. As designers frequently invoke vision and language in the context of design, this article takes a step back to ask if deep learning’s capabilities might be applied to design workflows, especially in architecture. In addition to addressing this general question, the article discusses one of several prototypes, BIMToVec, developed to examine the use of deep learning in design. It employs techniques like those used in natural language processing to interpret building information models. The article also proposes a homogeneous data format, provisionally called a design pixel, which can store design information as spatial-semantic maps. This would make designers’ intuitive thoughts more accessible to deep learning algorithms while also allowing designers to communicate abstractly with design software.

summary This paper describes the Buoyant Ecologies project, an ongoing research collaboration between architects, marine ecologists, and manufacturers focused on developing integrated architectural, ecological, and material responses to climate change and sea level rise. The research employs techniques of design computation and robotic fabrication to develop an approach to coastal resilience that is rooted in material performance as it relates to marine habitats. The project explores the design and production of highly performative fiber-reinforced polymer substrates that interact productively with the underwater ecosystem to promote multi-scalar habitats for invertebrate animals, encouraging ecological diversity and serving as wave-attenuating structures that mitigate coastal erosion. In this regard, the research leverages computational workflows of modeling, simulation, and fabrication to interface between human and nonhuman species in a way that benefits the broader ecosystem. The paper discusses an iterative prototyping process that has led to the design and construction of the Float Lab, a larger-scale prototype of a floating breakwater.
