summary Virtual reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality is making the headlines in the newspapers and magazines today. But unlike 25 years ago when the first VR rage started with the first Cave Automatic Virtual Environments (CAVE) infrastructures VR is now a technique that is available at very low costs.Especially the recent advances and developments in low cost VR hardware mainly the Head mounted displays (HMD), in particular those that use mobile phones but also the PC based systems like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive together with recent software developments allow this change. Naturally this is based on the interest of the Gaming Industry and the big players in the smartphone industry. But at the moment there are nearly no tools for architects available within these systems. In our point of view there is the big potential that these technologies can give new opportunities to architects and designers to use VR and AR as part of their design toolbox and not only as a presentation tool. For us this is the most important aspect. In our projects we therefore try to develop a workflow that can be easily used even without programming and scripting skills.

summary The construction industry’s reliance on two-dimensional documentation results in inefficiency, inconsistency, waste, human error, and increased cost, and limits architectural experimentation with novel form, structure, material or fabrication approaches. We describe a software platform that enables designers to create interactive holographic instructions that translate design models into intelligent processes rather than static drawings. A prototypical project to design and construct a pavilion from bent mild steel tube illustrates the use of this software to develop applications assisting with the design, fabrication, assembly and analysis of the structure. We further demonstrate that fabrication within mixed reality environments can enable unskilled construction teams to assemble complex structures in short time frames and with minimal errors, and outline possibilities for further improvements.

title Subtractive digital fabrication with actual robot and virtual material using a MARI platform

summary This article presents a project-based research study using a new hybrid augmented reality platform called the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface. Using the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface as a mixture of different software and hardware platforms, ranging from design/modeling software, simulation engine, and an augmented reality application, the designer would be able to evaluate the possibilities/limitations of the fabrication, in real time and as part of the design. This method advances designer’s understanding of the fabrication equipment as an input for the design decision-making process. This article demonstrates the potential of a virtual/actual hybridized platform as a new medium to design, simulate, and evaluate, in order to enhance the digital design and fabrication. Introducing the possibility of real-time communication between the digital design software and the fabrication platforms as well as the augmented reality simulation of the fabrication process, the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface enables designers to test the fabrication process with the fabrication equipment in the early stages of the design process. This method makes it possible to move beyond the traditional limitations of machines pursuing “un-expected creativity,” without any additional time or cost for the process. Using the virtual material for fabrication, the Mixed Architectural Robotic Interface reduces the time and cost of having multiple iterations and encourages the hands-on experimental use of the fabrication tool (in this article robotic/computer numeric control milling) not only as a production tool but also as a design study tool.

summary The paper describes the interdisciplinary course, Escaping Flatlands, focusing on improving communication between students, who were either from the field of architecture or media informatics and human-computer interaction. There were two underlying themes. The first, the integration and augmentation of digital media and haptic models, escaping the flatland of classic architectural media such as paper or screens. The second theme, expert-laymen communication in public participation, was addressed in the contextual theme and content of the course task, the communication between students of different fields, and the presentation of robust working prototypes at an architectural exhibition. Students, in groups of four, developed three interactive architectural models enhanced with digital content. The course resulted in a number of benefits to students, the chairs, and implications for research. It also led to further collabourations between the two universities involved, including cross-over Bachelor and Master Thesis.

summary The relationship between clay manufacturing and architectural design has a long trajectory that has been explored since the early 2000s. From a 3D printing or assembly perspective, using clay in combination with automated processes in architecture to achieve computational design solutions is well established. (Yuan, Leach & Menges, 2018). Craft-based clay art, however, still lacks effective computational design integration. With the improvement of Augmented Reality (AR) technologies (Driscoll et al., 2017) and the appearance of digital platforms, new opportunities to integrate clay manufacturing and computational design have emerged. The concept of digitally transferring crafting skills, using holographic guidance and machine learning, could make clay crafting accessible to more workers while creating the potential to share and exchange digital designs via an open-source manufacturing platform. In this context, this research project explores the potential of integrating computational design and clay crafting using AR. Moreover, it introduces a platform that enables AR guidance and the digital transfer of fabrication skills, allowing even amateur users with no prior making experience to produce complex clay components.

summary This paper presents a mixed-method research design investigation that integrates a Hybrid Digital-Analog Software-Hardware protocol referred to as the No Keyboard, No Mouse (NK-NM) platform. The NK-NM process uses both theoretical and applied research mechanisms to measure its influence on architectural design decision-making, knowledge exchange, student learning, aesthetics, and user experience in the context of an undergraduate architectural design studio. Observing a recognized gap in the current digital architectural design environments this paper details how the NK-NM protocol bridges this gap through an instructed hierarchical design process, customizable physical interface, and iterative simulation-based feedback loop.

summary This paper examines a novel, integrated and collaborative approach to design and fabrication, enabled through Mixed Reality. In a bespoke fabrication process, the design is controlled and altered by users in holographic space, through a custom, multi-modal interface. Users input is live-streamed and channeled to 3D modelling environment,on-demand robotic fabrication and AR-guided assembly. The Holographic Interface is aimed at promoting man-machine collaboration. A bespoke pipeline translates hand gestures and audio into CAD and numeric fabrication. This enables non-professional participants engage with a plethora of novel technology. The feasibility of Mixed Reality for architectural workflow was tested through an interactive installation for the makeCity Berlin 2018 festival. Participants experienced with on-demand design, fabrication an AR-guided assembly. summary The integration of technology into the design process has enabled us to communicate through various modes of virtuality, while more traditional face-to-face collaborations are becoming less frequent, specifically for large scale companies. Both modes of communication have benefits and disadvantages - virtual communication enables us to connect over large distances, however can often lead to miscommunication, while face-to-face communication builds stronger relationship, however may be problematic for geographically dispersed teams. Mixed Reality is argued to be a hybrid of face-to-face and virtual communication, and is yet to be integrated into the building design process. Despite its current limitations, such as field of view, Mixed Reality is an effective tool that generates high levels of nonverbal and verbal communication, and encourages a high and equal level of participation in comparison to virtual and face-to-face communication. Being a powerful communication tool for complex visualisations, it would be best implemented in the later stages of the building design process where teams can present designs to clients or where multiple designers can collaborate over final details.

summary Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) have been proposed to be additional architectural design mediums for at least 25 years (Dagit, 1993). Despite rapid technical and technological development, it has not been adopted into architectural design practices as compared to academia and research. Surveys from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and Royal Institutes of British Architects (RIBA) demonstrate the state of architectural practices; 72% of architects and 65% of architects respectively are not using any kind of virtual, augmented, or mixed reality in their practices(RIBA and Microsoft, 2018; Hampson, 2020). In this paper, the authors investigate the state of practices, issues, challenges, and opportunities of the utilization of virtual, augmented, and mixed realities in six architectural practices in the Danish context. Three of the practices are large architectural practices, one medium-sized practice specializing in institutional, healthcare and cultural architecture, and one firm designing private family houses, kindergartens, daycares and places for people with disability and, one experimental design studio. All these practices have used VR/AR in their projects to various degrees. In recent years Danish architectural practices have been involved in various VR/AR-based exhibitions, demonstrations, and tool developments to promote the usage of the same in design practice. Through a set of qualitative interviews with personnel from key architectural practices, the authors would like to demonstrate the present state of practices. The investigation explores the usage of VR and AR in Danish architecture practices by identifying challenges and opportunities regarding skill levels, architectural typology, use cases, toolchains, and workflow and shows similarities and differences between traditional and VR-based design processes. The main findings show how VR/AR-based visualization helps architects to perceive spatiality and also ushers creativity through immersion and overlays.

summary In remote meetings that involve the study of buildings and cities, sharing three-dimensional (3D) virtual spatial of buildings and cities is just as necessary as sharing the appearances and voices of meeting participants. Because of this, system development and pilot projects have attempted to share 3D virtual models via the internet in real-time but is still insufficient compared with face-to-face meeting. Therefore, this research explores the applicability of a spatial mixed reality (MR) system that displays point cloud streams to realize 3D remote meeting in architecture and urban fields. MR is a new technology that enables 3D presentations of various information, combining the physical and virtual worlds. One MR method is telepresence, which is expected to give people a way to communicate remotely as if face to face in a realistic way. We first developed a MR system named PcsMR (Point cloud stream on mixed reality) to display point cloud streams. The PcsMR system's operation consists of generating and transferring a point cloud stream and then rendering a point cloud stream using MR. The PcsMR acquired the point cloud stream in real-time using Kinect for Windows v2 and transferred it to Microsoft HoloLens, which uses optical see-through MR. Then we constructed two prototypes based on PcsMR and carried out pilot projects. Through observing the experiments, application possibilities for architecture and urban fields are found in meetings and communications that share real-time 3D objects and include the movement of remote participants and objects. The proposed method was evaluated feasible and effective.

summary This paper examines the existence of a visual illusion with depth of sight involving a perforated panel layered above another plane, evaluates the illusion's properties with virtual projection on a see-through, head-mounted display, and illustrates the relation between the veridical and perceived distances through a mathematical expression. summary In the late 1960s the architect Nicholas Negroponte introduced that the physical environment could exhibit reflexive and simulated behaviours, an idea that has since been widely explored. Despite of this wider interest, there is not, however, a systematic approach to understanding architectural responsiveness in the digital age. This paper aims to provide a formal way to facilitate designing smart and interactive artificiality in the built environment. This paper presents a conceptual framework, through exploratory studies on recent architecture, highlighting four key behaviours: (1) tangible interaction, (2) embodied response, (3) ambient simulation, and (4) mixed reality. In addition, two essential enablers, collectiveness and immersion, are proposed to enhance these key behaviours. This framework can be used as a tool to systematically identify and characterise the responsiveness of "responsive architecture". The creative mixtures of the key behaviours will contribute to the development of unique responsive environments.

summary The purpose of this study is to determine the parameters of the best possible spatial user interface design for the online shopping experience in mixed reality. In the first phase of the study, ten existing augmented and virtual reality shopping applications are examined, and the spatial relationships of the interfaces used in these experiences and the possibilities of natural interactions provided to the user are compared. In the next phase of the study, the interfaces are evaluated to propose a three-dimensional spatial interface powered by the mixed reality that improves the spatial relationship and neutrality of these interfaces.

summary This paper presents an initial version of the mapping of Brazilian actors in the field of immersive technologies applied to architecture, urbanism, design, and arts. The mapping includes academic and artistic actors who have produced within the researched theme between 2018-2023. Google Scholar and institutional repositories were the main search tools for relevant productions. After gathering the data, validation procedures were conducted. The eligible names were then added to an online table, intended to be collaborative and dynamic The results revealed a total of 45 mapped actors, including eight artists and 38 academics, affiliated with 21 institutions across Brazil. The collaborative online table situates Brazilian immersive technologies production and help to identify affinities between actors, fostering collaborations and research networks. It provides the possibility of visualizing the distribution of these actors nationwide, informing the academic and non-academic communities about the national artistic and scientific productions within the field.

summary This paper aims to study the potential impact of Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Realities (VAM) technologies on the built environment and to understand how immersive environments can be used to enhance the human experience within the built environment. In order to investigate and test how these technologies may improve our experience of the city, an augmented reality app is being developed in partnership with Victoria University of Wellington, the Wellington City Council and NEC, New Zealand. The research aims to explore ways in which VAM helps users in exploring cities. The philosophical driver of this project aims to focus on supporting the experience of moving between two points on a map rather than achieving the shortest route to a destination. Once developed, the project proposes the CityAR app which is to be distributed to the general public in order for them to test its functionality and in return, provide user feedback.
