summary This work covers the methodological approach that is used to gather information from the wisdom of crowd, to be utilized in a machine learning process for the automatic generation of minimal apartment units. The flexibility in the synthesis process enables the generation of apartment units that seem to be random and some are unsuitable for dwelling. Thus, the synthesis process is required to classify units based on their suitability. The classification is deduced from opinions of human participants on previously generated units. As the definition of "suitability" may be subjective, this work offers a crowdsourcing method in order to reach a large number of participants, that as a whole would allow to produce an objective classification. Gaming elements have been adopted to make the crowdsourcing process more intuitive and inviting for external participants.

summary Advances in autonomous control of object-scale robots, both anthropomorphic and vehicular, are posing new human–machine interface challenges. In architecture, very few examples of autonomous inhabitable robotic architecture exist. A number of factors likely contribute to this condition, among them the scale and cost of architectural adaptive systems, but on a more fundamental conceptual level also the questions of how architectural robots would communicate with their human inhabitants. The Flexing Room installation is a room-sized actuated active-bending skeleton structure. It uses rudimentary social feedback by counting people to inform its behavior in the form of actuated poses of the room enclosure. An operational full-scale prototype was constructed and tested. To operate it no geometric-based simulation was used; the only communication between computer and structure was in sending values for the air pressure settings and in gathering sensor feedback. The structure’s physical state was resolved through the embodied computation of its interconnected parts, and the people-counting sensor feedback influences its next action. Future work will explore the development of learning processes to improve the human–machine coexistence in space.

summary The physical design of the learning environment has been shown to contribute significantly to student performance and educational outcomes. However, the existing literature on this topic relies primarily on generalized observations rather than on rigorous empirical testing. Broad trends in environmental impacts have been noted, but there is a lack of detailed evidence about how specific design variables can affect learning performance. The goal of this study was to apply a new approach in examining classroom design innovations. We developed a protocol to evaluate the effectiveness of classroom designs by measuring the physical responses of study participants as they interacted with different designs using a virtual reality platform. Our hypothesis was that virtual “test runs” can help designers to identify potential problems and successes in their work prior to its being physically constructed. The results of our initial pilot study indicated that this approach could yield important results about human responses to classroom design, and that the virtual environment seemed to be a reliable testing substitute when compared against real classroom environments. In addition to leading toward practical conclusions about specific classroom design variables, this project provides a new kind of research method and toolset to test the potential human impacts of a wide variety of architectural innovations.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary Participatory planning aims at engaging multiple stakeholders including citizens in various stages of planning projects. Adopting participatory design approach in the early stage of planning project facilitates the ideation process of citizens. We have implemented a participatory design study during the 2017 Beijing Design Week and have conducted an interactive design project called "Design your perfect Dashilar: You Place it!". Participants including local residents and visitors were asked to redesign the Yangmeizhu street, a historical street located in Dashilar area by rearranging the buildings of residential, commercial, administration, and cultural functionalities. Apart from using digital design tools, questionnaires, interviews, and sensor network were applied to collect personal preferences data. Computational approaches were used to extract features from designs and personal preferences. In this paper, we illustrate the implementation of the participatory design and the possible applications by combining with crowdsourcing. Participatory design data and citizens profiles with personal preferences were analysed and their correlations were computed. By using crowdsourcing and participatory design, this study shows that the digitalization of participatory design with data science perspective can indicate the implicit requirements, needs and design ideas of citizens.

summary The relationship between clay manufacturing and architectural design has a long trajectory that has been explored since the early 2000s. From a 3D printing or assembly perspective, using clay in combination with automated processes in architecture to achieve computational design solutions is well established. (Yuan, Leach & Menges, 2018). Craft-based clay art, however, still lacks effective computational design integration. With the improvement of Augmented Reality (AR) technologies (Driscoll et al., 2017) and the appearance of digital platforms, new opportunities to integrate clay manufacturing and computational design have emerged. The concept of digitally transferring crafting skills, using holographic guidance and machine learning, could make clay crafting accessible to more workers while creating the potential to share and exchange digital designs via an open-source manufacturing platform. In this context, this research project explores the potential of integrating computational design and clay crafting using AR. Moreover, it introduces a platform that enables AR guidance and the digital transfer of fabrication skills, allowing even amateur users with no prior making experience to produce complex clay components.

summary Algorithmic design processes have enormous potential for architecture. Even though some large design offices have already incorporated such processes in their workflow, so far, these have not been seriously considered by the large majority of traditional small-scale studios. Nevertheless, as the integration of algorithmic techniques inside architectural studios does not require mastering programming skills, but rather taking advantage of a collaborative design process, small design studios are therefore able of using such strategies within their workflow. This paper discusses a series of challenges presented by one of these studios, where we had to integrate algorithmic design processes with the studio's traditional workflow.

summary The identity of an urban environment is important because it contributes to self-identity, a sense of community, and a sense of place. However, under present-day conditions, the identities of expanding cities are rapidly deteriorating and vanishing, especially in the case of Asian cities. Therefore, cities need to build their urban identity, which includes the past and points to the future. At the same time, cities need to add new features to improve their livability, sustainability, and resilience. In this paper, using data mining technologies for various types of geo-referenced big data and combine them with the space syntax analysis for observing and learning about the socioeconomic behavior and the quality of space. The observed and learned features are identified as the urban identity. The numeric features obtained from data mining are transformed into catalogued levels for designers to understand, which will allow them to propose proper designs that will complement or improve the local traditional features. A workshop in Taiwan, which focuses on a traditional area, demonstrates the result of the proposed methodology and how to transform a traditional area into a livable area. At the same time, we introduce a website platform, Quick Urban Analysis Kit (qua-kit), as a tool for citizens to participate in designs. After the workshop, citizens can view, comment, and vote on different design proposals to provide city authorities and stakeholders with their ideas in a more convenient and responsive way. Therefore, the citizens may deliver their opinions, knowledge, and suggestions for improvements to the investigated neighborhood from their own design perspective.

summary This paper discusses the design and fabrication of a novel in-situ fabrication system for building cladding envelope. The construction industry has utilised automation in onsite construction for many decades. This research examines how through the automation process, different construction techniques can be combined to generate a new system that is both performance and design lead. Through abstracting generative effects through the design process, the results are feedback into the fabrication process to construct a more meaningful dialogue between form, material and fabrication procedure. Using electronic prototyping, the researchers tested the system through large-scale prototypes. The paper concludes by discussing the interaction between material and design. We examine how this is evident in the machine workflow. The article addresses the theme of the conference through examining a revision of tool in design that embodied research knowledge for a more sustainable environment.

summary With the development of information technology, the ideas of programming and mass calculation were introduced into the design field, resulting in the growth of computer- aided design. With the idea of designing by data, we began to manipulate data directly, and interpret data through design works. Machine Learning as a decision making tool has been widely used in many fields. It can be used to analyze large amounts of data and predict future changes. Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) is a model framework in machine learning. It’s specially designed to learn and generate output data with similar or identical characteristics. Pix2pixHD is a modified version of GAN that learns image data in pairs and generates new images based on the input. The author applied pix2pixHD in recognizing and generating architectural drawings, marking rooms with different colors and then generating apartment plans through two convolutional neural networks. Next, in order to understand how these networks work, the author analyzed their framework, and provided an explanation of the three working principles of the networks, convolution layer, residual network layer and deconvolution layer. Lastly, in order to visualize the networks in architectural drawings, the author derived data from different layer and different training epochs, and visualized the findings as gray scale images. It was found that the features of the architectural plan drawings have been gradually learned and stored as parameters in the networks. As the networks get deeper and the training epoch increases, the features in the graph become more concise and clearer. This phenomenon may be inspiring in understanding the designing behavior of humans.

summary The process for constructing freeform buildings composed of many non-repetitive shapes and waste-free formwork systems remains relatively unexplored. This research reviews a method for fabricating complex double-curved shapes without utilizing single-use formworks. This work answers questions regarding the manufacturing of these shapes in an environmentally-friendly and economic fashion. The proposed method, called a "transformative formwork," could replace state-of-the-art CNC-milled molds and is potentially suitable for large-scale construction. The transformative formwork uses a stretchable membrane or "interpolation layer" that can be manipulated into any curved surface by using vertical bars capable of being rearranged into different heights. Here, to accurately generate most of the smooth, double-curved surfaces, laser kerfing is used for bending interpolation layer into almost any complex shape. A parametric model simplifies local or global changes to the density of the kerfing patterns, modifying the deformation behavior of the layer. Several kerfed interpolation layers produced for four transformative formworks showed that the application of this method.

summary This paper discusses the ability to apply machine learning to the combinatorial design-assembly at the scale of a building to urban form. Connecting the historical lines of discrete automata in computer science and formal studies in architecture this research contributes to the field of additive material assemblies, aggregative architecture and their possible upscaling to urban design. The following case studies are a preparation to apply deep-learning on the computational descriptions of urban form. Departing from the game Go as a testbed for the development of deep-learning applications, an equivalent platform can be designed for architectural assembly. By this, the form of a building is defined via the overlap between separate building parts. Building on part-relations, this research uses mereology as a term for a set of recursive assembly strategies, integrated into the design aspects of the building parts. The models developed by research by design are formally described and tested under a digital simulation environment. The shown case study shows the process of how to transform geometrical elements to architectural parts based merely on their compositional aspects either in horizontal or three-dimensional arrangements.

summary The study aimed to develop and test an environmentally friendly, easily deployable, and affordable solution for socio-economically challenged populations of the world. 3D-printing (additive manufacturing) was used as a rapid prototyping tool to develop and test a façade system that would modulate air velocity through modifying nozzle profiles to utilize natural cross ventilation techniques in order to improve human comfort in buildings. Constrained by seasonal weather and interior partitions which block the ability to cross ventilate, buildings can be equipped to perform at reduced energy loads and improved internal human comfort by using a façade system composed of retractable nozzles developed through this empirical research. This paper outlines the various stages of development and results obtained from physically testing different profiles of nozzle-forms that would populate the façade system. In addition to optimizing nozzle profiles, the team investigated the potential of collapsible tube systems to permit precise placement of natural ventilation directed at occupants of the built space.

summary Historically, architectural design focused on adaptation of built environment to serve human needs. Recently embedded computation and digital fabrication have advanced means to actuate physical infrastructure in real-time. These 'reactive spaces' have typically explored movement and media as a means to achieve reactivity and physical deformation (Chatting et al. 2017). However, here we recontextualize 'reactive' as finding new mechanisms for permanent and non-deformable everyday materials and environments. In this paper, we describe our ongoing work to create a series of complex forms - modular concrete panels - using thermal, tactile and thermochromic responses controlled by embedded networked system. We create individualized pathways to thermally actuate these surfaces and explore expressive methods to respond to the conditions around these forms - the environment, the systems that support them, their interaction and relationships to human occupants. We outline the design processes to achieve thermally adaptive concrete panels, illustrate interactive scenarios that our system enables, and discuss opportunities for new forms of interactivity within the built environment.

summary This research aims at investigating BCI technologies in the broad scope of CAAD applications exploiting early visual cognition in computational design. More precisely, this paper will describe the investigation of key BCI and ML components for the implementation and development of a software supporting this research : Uchron. It will be organised as follows. Firstly, it will introduce the pursued interest and contribution that visual-ERP EEG based BCI application for Generative Design may provide through a synthetic review of precedents and BCI technology. Secondly, selected BCI components will be described and a methodology will be presented to provide an appropriate framework for a CAAD software approach. This section main focus is on the processing component of the BCI. It distinguishes two key aspects of discrimination and generation in its design and proposes a new model based on GAN for modulated adversarial design. Emphasis will be made on the explicit use of inference loops integrating fast human cognitive responses and its individual capitalisation through time in order to reflect towards the generation of design and architectural features.

Taking inspiration from Charles Darwin's theory, all biological species were formed by the process of evolution based on natural selection of the fittest (Darwin, n.d.) this paper explains exploratory research showcasing semi-automatic design generation. This is realized by an interactive artificial selection tool, where the designer or the end user makes key decisions steering the propagation and breeding of future design artifacts. This paper, describes two prototypes and their use cases, highlighting interaction based optimal design selection. One of the prototypes explains a 2d organic shape creator using a metaball shape approach, while the other discusses a spatial layout generation technique for conceptual design.

summary This paper presents a design-methodological case study that looks into the practical expansion of conventional conceptual architectural design media by incorporating contemporary technology of motion capture. It discusses challenges of integrating dance movement as a real-time input parameter for architectural design that aims at translating body motion into space. The paper consists of four parts, beginning with a historic background overview of scientists, physiologists, artists, choreographers, and architects who have attempted capturing body motion and turning the motion into space. The second part of the paper discusses the iterative development of the 'Dance Machine' as a methodological tool for the integration of motion capture into conceptual architectural design. Thirdly, the paper discusses tested design applications of the 'Dance Machine' by looking at two sited applications. Finally, the overall methodology is critically assessed and discussed in the light of continuous development of creative applications of motion capturing technology. The paper concludes by highlighting the architectural potential found in specific qualities of dance and by advocating for a broader palette of tools, techniques, and input methods for the conceptual design of architecture.

summary The rapid growth of complex contemporary architecture design, contributed by the advance in parametric CAD/CAM software, is accompanied by challenges in the production process; it demands both highly trained workers and technical equipments. This paper reviews current technologies in robotics-aided construction and wearable computers for generic purposes, and proposes the design of a robotic device for construction guidance. It guides the user, the worker, through the assembly process of precision modular constructions, by providing procedural mechanical or haptic assistance in the 3-dimensional positioning of building components. The device is designed to be wearable, portable, and operable as a completely stand-alone system that requires no external infrastructure. A prototype of the device is tested with a mock-up masonry construction experiment, the result of which is reported in this paper, along with discussion for future improvement and application opportunities within the context of highly developed, condensed Japanese urban environments. A greater objective of this paper is to bridge current studies in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and digital fabrication in architecture and promote the potentials of human workers in future construction scenes.

summary Innovation incubator is an emerging kind of office space which focuses on promoting social interaction in the space. From the perspective of environmental behavior, the complex relationship between a particular space form and the social interactions is well worth exploring. Based on Wi-Fi positioning data, this paper examined the spatial and temporal behavior in innovation incubators. Using the interdisciplinary social networks analysis, this paper further analyzed the social interactions in this space, mining out social structures such as gathering and community, and analyzing the relationship between these structures and spaces. The result shows that human behavior in innovation incubators has some interesting characteristics, and the social structures are closely linked with the functional area of innovation incubator. This paper provides a new perspective and introduces interdisciplinary approaches to study the social behaviors in a particular space form, which has great potential in future research.

summary The change of the building morphology directly affects the surrounding environment, while the evaluation of these environment data becomes the main basis for the genetic iterations of the building morphology. Indeed, due to the complexity of the outdoor natural ventilation, multiple factors in the site could be the main reasons for the change of air flow. Thus, the architect is suggested to take the wind environment as the main morphology generation factor in the early stage of the building design. Based on the research results of 2017 DigitalFUTURE Wind Tunnel Visualization Workshop, a novel self-form-finding method in design infancy has been proposed. This method uses Arduino to carry out the dynamic design of the building model, which can not only connect the sensor to monitor the wind environment data, but also contribute the building model to correlate with the wind environment data in real time. The integration of the Arduino platform and the physical wind tunnel can create the possibility of continuous and real-time physical changes, data collection and wind environment simulation, using quantitative environmental factors to control building morphology, and finally achieve the harmony among the building, environment and human.
