summary Although parametric modelling and digital design tools have become ubiquitous in digital design, there is a limited understanding of how designers apply them in their design processes (Yu et al., 2014). This paper looks at the use of GHShot versioning tool developed by the authors (Cristie & Joyce, 2018; 2019) used to capture and track changes and progression of parametric models to understand early-stage design exploration and collaboration empirically. We introduce both development history graph-based metrics (macro-process) and parametric model and geometry change metric (micro-process) as frameworks to explore and understand the captured progression data. These metrics, applied to data collected from three cohorts of classroom collaborative design exercises, exhibited students' distinct modification patterns such as major and complex creation processes or minor parameter explorations. Finally, with the metrics' applicability as an objective language to describe the (collaborative) design process, we recommend using versioning for more data-driven insight into parametric design exploration processes.

summary The article underlines the problem of introducing computer techniques into the education process in master degree studies in architecture. Following the consumer society, developing technologies, changing social values architecture education changed its continuous principle into two-level system. The system well known from other fields of education results in diversified level of knowledge between admitted students on master studies. This fact in together with large exercise groups and a relatively short time allocated with the project requires methodical approach in relationship between a student and a teacher. The article focuses on complexity of a design process within different stages. Special attention is placed to an early design phase of shaping an architecture form because it demands different ways of presentation including freehand sketching, physical modelling and digital modelling. These tools correspond to the subsequent three phases of the design process, starting with exploration of the idea and context, functional decisions and determining the aesthetics. In authors opinion, the first phase of teaching process held without the use of computer techniques led to a higher originality of the architecture concept and increased efficiency in design process.

summary The paper discusses the future possible trajectories of information technologies applied to Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) domain. Specifically, it focuses on Building Information Modelling (BIM) being a key subject in the context of understanding the challenge of computing for a better tomorrow. In this respect it presents Polish situation as one of the European Union countries aiming at implementing BIM on the national level. What is more, it reveals findings derived from experience of teaching BIM and from questionnaires prepared for BIM learners. A comparative study of two types of representatives, viz. architecture students and experienced professionals, both acquiring BIM skills, has been conducted. The results show different approach and key obstacles associated with teaching, learning and comprehending BIM. Furthermore, on the one hand the study reveals discrepancy between research, academic experiments and everyday practice. On the other hand it emphasises specific characteristics of this domain enhanced with dynamic pace of change in technology, leading to conclusions that BIM should be placed on lifelong learning trajectory. Despite numerous obstacles the adoption of BIM is facing it concludes that it has arguments and potential to become 2020+ realm.

summary Virtual Reality (VR) is being revived in major disciplines, including architecture. VR is no longer only employed for basic operations, such as construction of 3D models, dynamic renderings, closed-loop interaction, inside-out perspective and enhance sensory feedback. This paper explains how over the past twenty years technologies and software have evolved that a new eco-system for design processes have risen. This paper discusses how students made full use of both software and equipment in the whole design process; from ideas exploration to site analysis to form generation to design realization. Students have been exposed to a whole range of digital software tools in the beginning. As most of them were already familiar with modelling software, they have in particular been introduced to animation software, game engines and even 3D documentation software such as photogrammetry. Most importantly, they were led to IVE. The paper points out the benefits of adopting such methodology and the difficulties faced by the students at the various stages of the design process.

summary We present and discuss an exploration of the possibilities and properties of 3D printing with a printing space of 1 cubic meter, and how those can be integrated into architectural education through an experimental design and research course with students of architecture.We expand on issues presented at the eCAADe conference 2017 in Rome [Ref 6] by increasing the complexity and size of our prints, printing not a model to scale, but a full scale funtional prototype of a usable architectural object: A coffee bar.

summary This article presents a specific description and findings in teaching architectural computing using 3D modeling software at the undergraduate level of Interior Design Studies (second academic year). This paper is mainly concerned with the analysis of issues and advantages resulting from teaching design through the "modeling first" in the overall design practice. By "the reversed 'in steps' design procedure" we recognize the design process encompassing the idea of "form first".We introduce BIM based modeling to Interior Design students at the undergraduate level through "in steps" procedure, which is the opposite to typical CAD procedures. With 3D model based method, the beginning of the design process by making the abstract, conceptual designs, and later translating it into design solutions are made possible. The use of BIM technology not only gives architecture, engineering, and construction professions tools to more efficient collaboration but also provides inventors such as architects with complete and integrated tools for the entire design development.

summary This work investigates the potential use of low-cost virtual reality (VR) devices in architectural education to improve spatial perception of undergraduate architecture students. The experiment involved a gradual approach into the design process, starting with an intervention on a physical space, its bidimensional representation, 3d modelling and immersion in VR. After the immersion, students answered a questionnaire with open and closed-questions about their experience, and their evaluation of the use of VR in the designing. The findings point to the use of VR as a means to explore, perceive and reflect on decisions, allowing students a better understanding of designing.

summary Architecture, like other practice-oriented schools, aims to teach skills and knowledge required in professional practice. The aspired architecture profession increasingly requires practitioners who are able to work in collaborative BIM environments. This creates a task for education to develop new ways of teaching BIM concepts and tools to prepare the next generations of students who will enter the work force. To address this need, this study developed a methodology for learning BIM in architecture education by establishing relationship between practice and education. As substantial part of methodology development process, this paper will present the ongoing research that focuses on collaborative teaching process between AE practitioners and teachers. The benefits and challenges of this process will be presented and discussed.

summary The use of technology instigates student interest. Thus, the possibilities offered by the technologies should be presented to students during their professional training. This paper aims to propose to teachers a change in the approach of 'geometry' contents through the use of BIM, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Rapid Prototyping and Digital Fabrication. The methodology chosen was Systematic Review of Literature and literature review without meta-analysis. It presents an overview of the applicability of such technologies in teaching, as well as possibilities little explored. The results indicate that 'geometry' teaching can benefit from the great potential offered by Information and Communication Technologies.

title Hybrid technopolitics for a collective construction

summary This paper refers to the creation of a collective construction as the opening class of three correlative courses. Before the event, the installation was designed and planned by the teaching staff, combining digital and analogical instruments, which allowed us to carry out a project that involved over five hundred participants. On the site, students built the objects without digital tools, as they were unavailable. These hybrid resources made possible the production of an object that was meaningful for both, students and teachers, as an introduc-tory action of the concepts that would be developed in the courses throughout the year.

summary The paper presents the concept and results of a seminar that addresses the intersecting fields of architecture and urbanism, data and information visualization as well as information technology. Subsequently, the course concept, the learning contents and the corresponding learning objectives are presented. In the second part, selected student projects are shown as exemplary course results. In the conclusion, the results of the seminar for students, teachers and research implications are discussed. The overall aim of this publication is to draw on the experience gained in this field of education to offer starting points for others in developing similar teaching concepts and support for their implementation.

summary In this paper we introduce mineR- a tool that integrates statistical data analysis inside the parametric design environment Grasshopper. We first discuss how the integration of statistical data analysis would improve the parametric modelling workflow. Then we present the statistical programming language R. Thereafter, we show how mineR is built to facilitate the use of R in the context of parametric modelling. Using two example cases, we demonstrate the potential of implementing mineR in the context of urban design and analysis. Finally, we discuss the results and possible further developments.

summary This paper examines a novel, integrated and collaborative approach to design and fabrication, enabled through Mixed Reality. In a bespoke fabrication process, the design is controlled and altered by users in holographic space, through a custom, multi-modal interface. Users input is live-streamed and channeled to 3D modelling environment,on-demand robotic fabrication and AR-guided assembly. The Holographic Interface is aimed at promoting man-machine collaboration. A bespoke pipeline translates hand gestures and audio into CAD and numeric fabrication. This enables non-professional participants engage with a plethora of novel technology. The feasibility of Mixed Reality for architectural workflow was tested through an interactive installation for the makeCity Berlin 2018 festival. Participants experienced with on-demand design, fabrication an AR-guided assembly. summary Beyond the benefits of standard documentation agreeance and project management coordination, many architects and other design professionals express concern over the limitation of Building Information Modelling (BIM) process may have on the design process, or better yet social responsibility or ecological benefit. For Living Wall facade exploration, this research suggests BIM is arguably an effective tool to support innovation in the design process, as well as promote collaboration between ecology and architecture disciplines. Ecological measures and data collection evidence further validates BIM procedural clarity and recognizes building façade exploration both technologically and environmentally.

summary We question the recent practices of conventional and participatory urban design approaches and offer a middle approach by exploring computational design tools in the design system. On the one hand, the top-down urban planning approaches investigate urban form as a holistic matter which only can be calibrated by urban professionals. These approaches are not able to offer enough information to the end users to predict the urban form. On the other hand, the bottom-up urban design approaches cannot visualise predicted urban scenarios, and most often the design decisions stay as general assumptions. We developed and tested a parametric design platform combines both approaches where all the stakeholders can participate and visualise multiple urban scenarios in real-time feedback. Parametric design along with CIM modelling system has influenced urban designers for a new endeavour in urban design. This paper presents a methodology to generate and visualise urban form. We present a novel decision-making platform that combines city level and local neighbourhood data to aid participatory urban design decisions. The platform allows for stakeholder collaboration and engagement in complex urban design processes.

summary "Smart City" business model is guiding the development of future metropolises. Software industry sales to town halls for city management services efficiency improvement are, these days, a very pro?table business. Being the model decided by the industry, it can develop into a dangerous situation in which the basis of the new city design methodologies is decided by agents outside academia expertise. Drawing on complex science, social physics, urban economics, transportation theory, regional science and urban geography, the Lab is dedicated to the systematic analysis of, and theoretical speculation on, the recently coined "Science of Cities" discipline. On the research agenda there are questions arising from the synthesis of architecture, urban design, computer science and sociology. Collaboration with citizens through inclusion and empowerment, and, relationships "City-Data-Planner-Citizen" and "Citizen-Design-Science", configure Lab's methodology provoking a dynamic responsive process of design that is yet missing on the path towards the real responsive city.

summary Even though architectural modelling radically evolved over the course of its history, the current integration of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) components in the corresponding design tasks is mostly limited to enhancing visualisation. Little to none of these tools attempt to tackle the challenge of modelling within immersive environments, that calls for new input modalities in order to move away from the traditional mouse and keyboard combination. In fact, relying on 2D devices for 3D manipulations does not seem to be effective as it does not offer the same degrees of freedom. We therefore present a solution that brings VR modelling capabilities to Grasshopper, a popular parametric design tool. Together with its associated proof-of-concept application, our extension offers a glimpse at new perspectives in that field. By taking advantage of them, one can edit geometries with real-time feedback on the generated models, without ever leaving the virtual environment. The distinctive characteristics of VR applications provide a range of benefits without obstructing design activities. The designer can indeed experience the architectural models at full scale from a realistic point-of-view and truly feels immersed right next to them.

summary When working with parametric models, architects typically focus on using rather structuring them (Woodbury, 2010). As a result, increasing design complexity typically means a convoluted parametric model, amplifying known problems: 'hard to understand, modify, share and reuse' (Smith 2007; Davis 2011). This practice is in contrast with conventional software-programming where programmers are known to meticulously document and structure their code with versioning tool. In this paper, we argue that versioning tools could help to manage parametric modelling complexity, as it has been showing with software counterparts. Four key features of version control: committing, differentiating, branching, and merging, and how they could be implemented in a parametric design practice are discussed. Initial user test sessions with 5 student designers using GHShot Grasshopper version control plugin (Cristie and Joyce 2018, 2017) revealed that the plugin is useful to record and overview design progression, share model, and provide a fallback mechanism.

With urbanization and ongoing densification of cities, new planning regulations are emerging in order to manage access to sun light. In Estonia a daylight standard defines the rights of light for existing buildings and the direct solar access requirement for new premises. The solar envelope method and environmental simulations to compute direct sun light hours on building façades can be used to design buildings that respect both daylight requirements. However, no existing tool integrates both methods in an easy to use manner. Further, the assessment of façade performance needs to be related to the design of interior layouts and of building clusters to be meaningful to architects. Hence, the present work presents a computational design workflow for the evaluation and optimisation of high density building clusters in urban environments in relation to direct solar access requirements and selected types of floor plans.

summary A persistent challenge to the more widespread use of shape grammars in architectural research is the creation of rules and rule sets for application in design contexts, while leaving space for design creativity despite the limitations of a rule-based system. A hybrid of associative and rule-based approaches may alleviate this. We present one such development, a Grasshopper shape grammar plug-in that embeds a rule-based approach within a parametric modelling environment. It supports shape emergence, visual enumeration of rule application results, and the parametric definition of shapes and shape rules even when selecting a non-parametric rule matching mechanism. Grasshopper's ability to handle geometries and text together allows for external descriptions and labels as attributes to points, enabling definition and application of compound, geometric and description rules. Well-known examples from shape grammar literature are implemented using the plug-in, with a focus on rule definition and application in the context of interaction between the parametric modelling environment and the rule-based interpreter, and simultaneous use of geometry, descriptions, and descriptions as attributes in rules.
