summary Since 2002, the Master's students at the Graduate School of Architecture of Nantes who are enrolled in the "Architecture in Representation" orientation have carried out a pioneering work in the use of digital tools. By adopting the most recent techniques and tools, they have transformed the architectural design approach, thanks to the integration of "narrative design". In fifteen years, students will have gone from the board to digital drawing, to immersion and virtual reality, including short films and interactive devices, without losing sight that the subject of the work is in fact the project, and not the tool. In doing so, they have questioned, led by their professors, the status of synthesis images, the challenges of interactive narrative and of the virtual world. Within the school, time was needed to accept these explorations; the use of digital tools, long criticised, was blocking the appreciation of the content and the students' experimental approaches. Nowadays, the experience from these past fifteen years lead us to ask this question: do digital tools renew the design paradigms, or are we only involved in the evolution of practices through the integration of other means?

summary The paper discusses the possibilities of replacing the prevailing, positivistic approach in the field of architectural computing education with the constructivist one. The mentioned approaches represent radically different philosophies of what knowledge is and how it is produced. In the field of professional education they also differently define the competencies of the professional. Nowadays, in architecture, where the design digital platforms producers force the philosophy of 'standards', the need for rethinking our general approach to architectural computing becomes an urgent issue.

summary The analysis of make-belief drawings and models of Sci-Fi spaceships and architecture, leaves architects usually in absence of interior, material or program information. The spatial depth of sci-fi digital or physical models is virtually non-existent and unresolved. This discrepancy within sci-fi scenarios inspired the development of an integrated teaching methodology within design studios, with the academic objective to utilize computational methods for analysis, reproduction and eventually composition, while assessing its capacity to achieve a successful assimilation of design computation in the curriculum. The Spaceship Architecture Design Studio at University of Innsbruck's Institute for Experimental Architecture.hochbau follows a procedural approach in which the design objective is not predefined. Yet, it aims to be 'outside of this world' as a sci-fi architectural quality-enriched result of our reality, via a design oriented course with immersive computational strategies.

summary Sci-Fi architecture, both as digital or physical representations, despite their inherent intricacy, lack the spatial depth of a structured interior, material definition or program information. This discrepancy, combined with the plethora of available sci-fi motifs, inspired the development of an integrated teaching approach with the academic objective to utilize computational methods for analysis, reproduction and composition of generative building skins, and consequently architecture, which aims to be 'outside of this world' as a sci-fi design quality-enriched result of our reality. The proposed methodology is implemented at the Spaceship Architecture Design Studio at the University of Innsbruck. Its capacity to achieve a successful assimilation of design computation in the curriculum is subsequently assessed by the documentation and quantitative/qualitative evaluation of the designs developed during two academic years, in line with a generative facade articulation schema, without however undermining the rest of the virtues of tectonic spaces. The introduction of a theme like sci-fi where the design objective is not clearly defined, is examined in comparison to similar approaches, towards the corroboration of the pedagogical method proposed.

summary The last three decades have witnessed the explosion of technology and its impact on the architecture discipline which has drastically changed the methods of design. New techniques such as Agent-based modeling (ABM) and Virtual Reality (VR) have been widely implemented in architectural and urban design domains, yet the potential integration between these two methods remains arguably unexploited. The investigation in this paper aims to probe the following questions: How can architects and urban designers be informed more comprehensively by melding ABM and VR techniques at the preliminary/conceptual design stage? Which platform is considered more appropriate to facilitate a user-friendly system and reduces the steep learning curve? And what are the potential benefits of this approach in architectural education, particularly for the design studio environment? With those questions, we proposed a prototype in Unity, a multi-platform development tool that originated from the game industry, to simulate and visualize pedestrian behaviors in urban environments with immersive design experience and tested it in a scenario-based case study. This approach has also been further tested in an architectural design studio, demonstrating its technical feasibility as well as the potential contributions to the pedagogy.

title 3D modeling in the design course context: A didactic experience

summary The use of informatic tools (computer-aided design) may be associated to designer tasks since the first phase of product conception until industrial production. By using these CAD tools during the initial design phase, it is possible to predict, identify and correct mistakes. This is an interdisciplinary article that presents and discusses an experience as a teacher of graphics computation II, offered to product design students. It also reveals the didactic methods and psychological approaches applied to address this challenge: Achievement motivation, pedagogy of autonomy and learning pyramid. The didactic experiment was positive and lead to interesting learning results.

summary Increasing use of BIM has represented a continuing shift in traditional assumptions on how we navigate the design process. BIM is affording the student the ability to gain a greater understanding of their design ideas via the exploration of scale, spatial organisation and structure, amongst many other design layers, in increasing levels of detail, at the same point in the design process. Architectural education is at a delayed tipping point where architectural students are increasingly looking towards BIM to streamline their design process drawn by the production of realistic visualisation, but with a lack of knowledge and skill in its application. With a lack of guidance and understanding around the application of BIM, the use of BIM in this manner overlooks the potential of BIM to construct and test virtual simulations of proposed schemes, to support design enquiry. A historical concern for the pedagogy constructed around the students’ design process is the application of methods and techniques that support the progression through the design process, (Ambrose, 2014; dash mei & Safari, 2018). This study examines the design process of architectural students and the interaction between analogue and digital methods used in design. These primary modes of communication, offer the opportunity to query the roles and rules of traditional architectural conventions around ‘problem finding’ and ‘problem solving’, challenging the ‘traditional’ design process examined by pioneers like Bruner (1966) and Schon (1987). These approaches are distilled from the findings of the study and presented as guidance to those teaching in architectural aBIMemia to align pedagogic goals to methods of abstraction in this new era of design education reconsidering digital methods in design.

summary This paper presents a mixed-method research design investigation that integrates a Hybrid Digital-Analog Software-Hardware protocol referred to as the No Keyboard, No Mouse (NK-NM) platform. The NK-NM process uses both theoretical and applied research mechanisms to measure its influence on architectural design decision-making, knowledge exchange, student learning, aesthetics, and user experience in the context of an undergraduate architectural design studio. Observing a recognized gap in the current digital architectural design environments this paper details how the NK-NM protocol bridges this gap through an instructed hierarchical design process, customizable physical interface, and iterative simulation-based feedback loop.

summary This paper shows and describes the experience of the ePortfolio implementation in architectural training for promoting Networked Learning (NL). The aim was to analyze the potential of ePortfolio, as a techno-pedagogical strategy to develop and enhance connections and learning integrations among students who belong in the second year of the Architectural Design Studio. The research had a descriptive methodology with a mixed approach over fourteen cohorts of the same training cycle across the years 2012 to 2018, considering a total of 336 students. The results reveal that ePortfolio, conceived inside the techno-pedagogical model, articulates a set of learning connections between students and learning situations and promotes the construction of an active collaboration net, which evidence NL development in the formative process.

summary The paper describes the application of a standardised teaching method of digital fabrication in architecture. The introduction formulates a pedagogical problem and addresses both methodological and praxiological aspects of the teaching process based on design research. Next, the process is illustrated with a description of three digital fabrication courses where the teaching method was used. The initial implementation took place in 2016 at Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology. The author outlines the translation of theoretical work frame into teaching method, presents the course outcomes and provides a critical analysis of results. In 2017, a revised teaching method has been used two times, again at Faculty of Architecture at WUT and at Monash Art Design and Architecture. Both courses are described in a way analogous to the initial exploration. In consequence, the results of the same course conducted in different teaching, conditions are compared. In conclusion, the developed method is evaluated in relation to teaching outcomes.

summary In the summer of 2018, our collaboration was awarded a University Design Fellowship from the Exhibit Columbus organization to design, fabricate, and build a large pavilion in Columbus, Indiana as part of a biannual contemporary architecture exhibition. Our proposal for the competition was a pavilion that would double as an ecological education center. Our inspiration for this program was triggered in part by our reading of Jane Bennett’s materialist philosophy outlined in her book Vibrant Matter (2009). Through Bennett’s lens, our design rendered our site’s context as an animate field, replete with pre-existing material composites that we wanted to celebrate through a series of displays, information boards, and artificial lighting. In this, the installation would feature samples of local plants, minerals, and rocks, indigenous to Southern Indiana.

The philosophy of Deleuze-Guattari gives us the keys of a machinic device that can counter-actualize the generic arrengement we suffer, derived from media and technology. This space is considered as a scenic space but also scientific and analytical, developing what Deleuze-Guattari called schizoanalysis clinic but that we can also understand as the development of a proper and interdisciplinary methodology for the new laboratories of human and social sciences.

Problematizing these questions, we extend the discussion to the importance of contemporary design to adopt creative strategies that articulate thoughts from other areas of knowledge, such as philosophy and art, from the perspective of multiplicity of mediums. summary The concept of generative design in Architecture and Urbanism can be found in the 60's before the wide availability of computer technology. This paper decodes one of the urban projects by Metabolist in 1960, which was intended to be a generative system applicable to other sites and evolves over time. Through our analysis, we de-code the formulation process, and verified our hypothesis by re-coding into the program using the software, Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. We found that the determinate factors rule more at the macro level of the project, but the parameters are set by taking the local conditions into account. At the micro level, the system leaves more freedom to accommodate various needs, reflecting the philosophy of the Metabolists. The investigation on this historical predecessor can provide useful insights for parameter settings in future generative system design.

summary The "digital turn" in architecture is ontologically drawn from Deleuzian philosophy, particularly the thinking defined by Manuel Delanda as real virtuality. This philosophical thinking reflects the essential paradigm of digital design-a generative process driven by intensive difference to approach the singularity of form in a space of possibilities. However, no matter how dynamic the design process is in digital software, the construction result of a building is unavoidably static and permanent. Thus, the essence of digital design will always be misaligned with the material reality of its production. Addressing on this confliction, the research is trying to rethink the philosophical term "real virtuality" in the process of human perception. By examining different theories about the anti-static condition of perception, it forms a novel perspective to address the dynamic relationship between building form, virtual "information" and human perception, and extends the productivity of "becoming" from digital design process to the process of building colonization.

summary The design and construction of the complex, irregularly shaped, and curvilinear building forms are also known as freeform architecture, have gained an interest form architects and engineers. This paper presents how freeform façade designs are defined with its curvilinear geometric characteristics and the systematic approach that is used to design and implement them. The proposed method incorporates product design and integral façade construction approach at AFA Cultural Center freeform façade implementation. Therefore, the paper aims to improve the viability of the proposed method and decreasing the gap between the other disciplines and architects in a systematic way without losing the creativity of the architects.

title Parametricism as style: the relationship between methodology of scientific research programmes and parametric design

summary During the 1990s many architects, who dissociated from critical theory, were looking for new design methodologies that did not confine themselves as stylistic currents. One of these propractice movement is done by means of parametric design. Aiming to investigate the boundaries between methodology and style, this paper proposes to answer the question: does the parametric architecture constitute a new style, as Patrik Schumacher says? It reviews Heinrich Wölfflin concept of style in the contemporary context; it presents Imre Lakatos theory (methodology of scientific research programmes) and how Schumacher appropriates of it followed by a critical reflection on the limits of such appropriation.

The presented research mediates physical, digital, virtual and mixed realities, bridges scales from the singular material compounds to the complex conglomerations associated with the urban environment, and all the while pushing against the limits of design both on Earth and beyond. summary Architectural designers are currently depending on a multitude of elaborate computational tools in order to explore, manipulate and visualize the geometric form of their building projects. However, if architecture can be perceived as the manipulation of geometric form in direct relation to human activities and events that take place inside it, then it is evident that such design parameters are not sufficiently represented in the currently available modeling software. Would it be possible to introduce the human activity element in the aforementioned computational tools in a way that informs the design process and improves the final building product? This paper attempts to answer this question by introducing a new experimental design tool that enables the creation of parametric human activity envelopes within three-dimensional digital models. The novel approach is that this tool enables the parametric interaction of these components with the actual building geometry and generates novel visual and data representations of the 3D model. The goal is to improve the decision-making process of architects as well as their clients by enabling them to evaluate and iterate their designs based not only on the building's form but also on the human spatial events that take place inside it. A prototype implementation demonstrates the tool's practical application through three design examples.

summary We question the recent practices of conventional and participatory urban design approaches and offer a middle approach by exploring computational design tools in the design system. On the one hand, the top-down urban planning approaches investigate urban form as a holistic matter which only can be calibrated by urban professionals. These approaches are not able to offer enough information to the end users to predict the urban form. On the other hand, the bottom-up urban design approaches cannot visualise predicted urban scenarios, and most often the design decisions stay as general assumptions. We developed and tested a parametric design platform combines both approaches where all the stakeholders can participate and visualise multiple urban scenarios in real-time feedback. Parametric design along with CIM modelling system has influenced urban designers for a new endeavour in urban design. This paper presents a methodology to generate and visualise urban form. We present a novel decision-making platform that combines city level and local neighbourhood data to aid participatory urban design decisions. The platform allows for stakeholder collaboration and engagement in complex urban design processes.
