summary Stringent requirements of efficiency and sustainability lead to the demand for buildings that have good performance regarding different criteria, such as cost, lighting, thermal, and structural, among others. Optimization can be used to ensure that such requirements are met. In order to optimize a design, it is necessary to generate different variations of the design, and to evaluate each variation regarding the intended criteria. Currently available design and evaluation tools often demand manual and time-consuming interventions, thus limiting design variations, and causing architects to completely avoid optimization or to postpone it to later stages of the design, when its benefits are diminished. To address these limitations, we propose Algorithmic Optimization, an algorithmic-based approach that combines an algorithmic description of building designs with automated simulation processes and with optimization processes. We test our approach on a daylighting optimization case study and we benchmark different optimization methods. Our results show that the proposed workflow allows to exclude manual interventions from the optimization process, thus enabling its automation. Moreover, the proposed workflow is able to support the architect in the choice of the optimization method, as it enables him to easily switch between different optimization methods.

summary This paper describes non-manifold topology (NMT) as it relates to the field of architecture and presents Topologic, an open-source software modelling library enabling hierarchical and topological representations of architectural spaces, buildings and artefacts through NMT. Topologic is designed as a core library and additional plugins to visual data flow programming (VDFP) software. The software architecture and class hierarchy are explained and two domain-specific demonstrative tools (TopologicEnergy and TopologicStructure) are presented to illustrate how third-party software developers could use Topologic to build their own solutions. The paper concludes with a reflection on the benefits and limitations of NMT in the design and simulation workflows and outlines future work.

summary This paper describes the development of a Grasshopper-based planning support tool for urban planning. The tool aims at the analysis of demand in educational facilities and the optimization of their location and capacities. It was developed for the use case of Berlin using only publicly available resources and data sets. Through preprocessed GIS- and statistical data plus an easy-access interface, the tool encourages people from different backgrounds and even those with no professional knowledge in planning, to engage in urban decision making. Although being initially aimed at contributing to a moderated participation process, the tool's simple GUI (graphical user interface) and open source backend, make it usable in any setup - without a briefed advisor or the need for later professional evaluation by another party.

summary This paper discusses the authors’ experiences and lessons learned through designing and constructing small- and large-scale robotic prototypes and the fully integrated use of VR and AR for design. Also of focus here are the methodological tools utilized to implement this student-led research in an interdisciplinary educational environment, as well as the design explorations of Mars habitation systems. Through the systems engineering approach, students will generate ideas that may or may not make it to the final design development stage, but may potentially be valuable to future real exploration habitats and mission architectures. The final prototype allows an assessment of the focus parameters, which are the vessels’ transformation capacities and layout adaption. The design objective of this project is to examine strategies for commonality between an interplanetary vehicle (IPV) and a Mars surface habitat. The presented design proposals address this challenge to create a common habitation system in both habitats so that crew members will be familiar with the layout, function, and location throughout the expedition. The design tools operate at the intersection of architectural layout design, mechanics, and structural design, and use origami folding techniques and structural form-finding concepts to generate shell action rigidity. In addition, the project develops a strategy for mobility and transformation of the surface habitat prior to its transformed configuration. The value here lies in understanding lessons from this strategy for both the design process as well as efficiency and optimization in design as a model for terrestrial design.

summary This paper presents a case study for the production of retroreflective ceiling treatment in an open work environment. In this setting with multiple talkers, speech distraction can be a significant cause of dissatisfaction and loss of productivity. Ceiling treatment in open plan work environments can provide an important way of ameliorating distraction from unattended speech, and rather than absorbing the sound at the ceiling, this paper examines the possibility of reflecting sound back to the source. Computational design and digital fabrication are integrated in this research for a site-specific deployment of the ceiling treatment and physical testing of prototypes in an acoustics laboratory. The contemporary possibilities that open up with new technologies to understand and resurrect faceted geometries and potentially vary historical precedents via new manufacturing techniques are demonstrated in these novel acoustic reflective ceilings that reflect sound back to their original source.

summary Our research aims to push the limits of 3D printing towards the structural design and optimization. Additive manufacturing has an unique feature which is printing multi-faced complex geometries as easy as simple ones. Therefore additive manufacturing creates the chance of producing really small scaled complex forms. In a structural network, it can be easily understood that the more geometric variations to respond stress, the more adaptive structure will become to respond structural needs. The structural reaction is to be fictionalized by procedural operations and analysis that will be a tool to design multi-scaled fragmented structures. Those operations is to use the structural analysis and material reactions. Their iteration with the overall geometry will form the geometric generations. However the verification of the generations as outcomes of a real 3D printer is crucial. To verify, the precision of additive manufacturing should be sensitive enough that the structural element will function as it's simulated in computer with the algorithm. The sensitivity is important because, even couple of micro-sized problems can cause bigger ones in the structural element itself. The combination of all these variables can enable an initial geometry, to be able to adapt the stuructural needs in every additive generation.

summary The paper aims to address methods of creating a system for design through material studies that are employed as feedback on a computational digital model. The case study described in this paper is the output of an exploration that has investigated physical transformation, interaction and wood materiality over the period of two weeks of the international architecture programme AA Athens Visiting School in Greece. Real-time performative form-responsive methods based on bending and stretching have been developed and simulated in an open-source programming environment. The output of the simulation has been informed by the results of material tests that took place in parallel and have served as inputs for the fine-tuning of the simulation. Final conclusions were made possible from these explorations that enabled the fabrication of a prototype using wood veneer at one-to-one scale. From a pedagogical aspect, the research main focus is to improve the quality of architectural education by learning through making. This is made possible using advanced computational techniques and coupling them with material studies towards an integrated system for architectural prototypes within a limited time frame.

summary Machine learning is yet to make a significant impact in the field of architecture and design. However, with the combination of artificial neural networks, a biologically inspired machine learning paradigm, and deep learning, a hierarchical subsystem of machine learning, the predictive capabilities of machine learning processes could prove a valuable tool for designers. Yet, the inherent knowledge gap between the fields of architecture and computer science has meant the complexity of machine learning, and thus its potential value and applications in the design of the built environment remain little understood. To bridge this knowledge gap, this paper describes the development of a learning tool directed at architects and designers to better understand the inner workings of machine learning. Within the parametric modelling environment of Grasshopper, this research develops a framework to express the mathematic and programmatic operations of neural networks in a visual scripting language. This offers a way to segment and parametrise each neural network operation into a basic expression. Unpacking the complexities of machine learning in an intermediary software environment such as Grasshopper intends to foster the broader adoption of artificial intelligence in architecture.

summary This paper, presents an ongoing work entitled ICARUS, an abbreviation for 'Integrating Computerized ARchitecture with USers'. The aim of this work is to develop an open source platform for computer programming implemented in architecture, for teaching and research. In particular, the platform provides the framework for a simplified and user friendly textual programming methodology for the needs of our architectural institution. It consists of several modules like coding, plug-in and repository development, targeting to be publicly available in the future. The platform is created based on the Python programming language, which is run in Grasshopper, a plug-in for Rhino 3D. In the first phase of ICARUS development, several case studies within the framework of a postgraduate course are conducted, aiming at providing an overview of its potentials, limitations and generally, its impact on establishing a useful methodology for algorithmic thinking among students with little or no prior computer programming skills.

summary This paper presents a computational design approach and novel digital fabrication method for an optimized lightweight concrete slab using a 3D-printed formwork. Smart Slab is the first concrete slab fabricated with a 3D-printed formwork. It is a lightweight concrete slab, displaying three-dimensional geometric differentiation on multiple scales. The optimization of slab systems can have a large impact on buildings: more compact slabs allow for more usable space within the same building volume, refined structural concepts allow for material reduction, and integrated prefabrication can reduce complexity on the construction site. Among the main challenges is that optimized slab geometries are difficult to fabricate in a conventional way because non-standard formworks are very costly. Novel digital fabrication methods such as additive manufacturing of concrete can provide a solution, but until now the material properties and the surface quality only allow for limited applications. The fabrication approach presented here therefore combines the geometric freedom of 3D binderjet printing of formworks with the structural performance of fiber reinforced concrete. Using 3D printing to fabricate sand formwork for concrete, enables the prefabrication of custom concrete slab elements with complex geometric features with great precision. In addition, space for building systems such as sprinklers and Lighting could be integrated in a compact way. The design of the slab is based on a holistic computational model which allows fast design optimization and adaptation, the integration of the planning of the building systems, and the coordination of the multiple fabrication processes involved with an export of all fabrication data. This paper describes the context, design drivers, and digital design process behind the Smart Slab, and then discusses the digital fabrication system used to produce it, focusing on the 3D-printed formwork. It shows that 3D printing is already an attractive alternative for custom formwork solutions, especially when strategically combined with other CNC fabrication methods. Note that smart slab is under construction and images of finished elements can be integrated within couple of weeks.

summary This paper describes a novel method for reconstructing urban environments based on individual occupant experience. The method relies on a low-cost off-the-shelf 360-degree camera to capture video and audio data from a natural walk through the city. It then uses a custom workflow based on an open-source Structure from Motion (SfM) library to reconstruct a dense point cloud from images extracted from the 360-degree video. The point cloud and audio data are then represented within a virtual reality (VR) model, creating a multisensory environment that immerses the viewer into the subjective experience of the occupant.

This work questions the role of precision and fidelity in our experience and representation of a “real” physical environment. On the one hand, the resulting VR environment is less complete and has lower fidelity than digital environments created through traditional modeling and rendering workflows. On the other hand, because each point in the point cloud is literally sampled from the actual environment, the resulting model also captures more of the noise and imprecision that characterizes our world. The result is an uncanny immersive experience that is less precise than traditional digital environments, yet represents many more of the unique physical characteristics that define our urban experiences.

summary With recent advancements in VR (Virtual Reality) technology in the past year, it has emerged as a new paradigm in visualization and immersive HMI (Human-machine Interface). On the other hand, in the past decades, BIM (Building Information Modelling) has emerged as the new standard of implementing construction projects and is quickly becoming a norm than just a co-ordination tool in the AEC industry.Visualization of the digital data in BIM plays an important role as it is the primary communication medium to the project participants, where VR can offer a new dimension of experiencing BIM and improving the collaboration of various stakeholders of a project. There are both open source and commercial solutions to extend visualization of a BIM project in VR, but so far, there are no complete solutions that offer a pure IFC format based solution, which makes the VR integration vendor neutral. This work endeavors to develop a concept for a vendor-neutral BIM-VR integration with bi-directional data exchange in order to extend VR as a collaboration tool than a mere visualization tool in the BIM ecosystem.

This paper describes a bibliometric study focused on eCCADe and SIGraDi papers from 2003 to 2018 retrieved from CumInCad by using an open source software developed by the team for this research. The most used keywords and most cited authors, cross-citations between societies and time series about this data were synthesized, recovering part of the histories of these societies. Some similarities and differences between them are pointed out allowing to understand their past for better drawing their future.

keywords The present paper is part of an ongoing research that deals with the inclusion of the effect of bio-luminescence as a substitute or complimentary light source in urban environments, with the main scope of reducing energy consumption for lighting in exterior areas. The paper discusses the selection of genetically modified transgenic plants for use in the climate of Greece and through bibliographic reference and preliminary experiments the modeling of a simulated light source that has the bio-luminescent properties of a specific plant. The modeled light source can then be used in lighting simulation software. Results, through the lighting simulation of the modeled transgenic plant in a case study scenario, support the fact that bio-luminescent plants can be used as supporting lighting agents in a suburban setting and eventually reduce energy consumption for lighting.

summary This article aims to present a discussion about the maker culture and an experience of fabricating and sharing a set of building blocks designed as a didactic tool for teaching architectural design within the premises of do-it-yourself culture and an open source model. Methodologically, the article is the result of both a bibliographical research and an empirical research, from which, in contemporary times, is evidenced the strengthening of flexible, collaborative, creative and innovative processes, prevailing premises in the maker movement.

summary Visibility plays an important role in perception and use of an urban design, and thus often becomes a target of design analysis. This work presents a fast method of evaluating various visibility-based design characteristics, such as isovists or insolation exploiting the GPU rendering pipeline and compute shaders. The proposed method employs a two-stage algorithm on each point of interest. First, it projects the visible space around a vantage point onto an equirectangular map. Second, it folds the map using a flexibly defined function into a single value that is associated with the vantage point. Being executed on a grid of points in a 3D scene, it can be visualized as a heat map or utilized by another algorithm for further design analysis. The developed system provides nearly real-time analysis tools for an early-stage design process to a broad audience via web services.

summary This paper presents an opportunistic sensing system for air quality monitoring to forecast the implicit factors of air pollution. Opportunistic sensing is performed by web scraping in the social network service to extract information. The data source for the air quality analysis combines two types of information: explicit and implicit information. The objective is to develop the information extraction methodology by web scraping for smart cities. The application development methodology has potential for solving real-world problems such as air pollution by data comparison between social activity observing and data collecting in sensor network.

summary Tools and methods used by architects always had an impact on the way building were designed. With the change in design methods and new approaches towards creation process, they became more than ever before crucial elements of the creation process. The automation of architects work has started with computational functions that were introduced to traditional computer-aided design tools. Nowadays architects tend to use specified tools that suit their specific needs. In some cases, they use artificial intelligence. Despite many similarities, they have different advantages and disadvantages. Therefore the change in the design process is more visible and unseen before solution are brought in the discipline. The article presents methods of applying the selected artificial intelligence algorithms: swarm intelligence, neural networks and evolutionary algorithms in the architectural practice by authors. Additionally research shows the methods of analogue data input and output approaches, based on vision and robotics, which in future combined with intelligence based algorithms, might simplify architects everyday practice. Presented techniques allow new spatial solutions to emerge with relatively simple intelligent based algorithms, from which many could be only accomplished with dedicated software. Popularization of the following methods among architects, will result in more intuitive, general use design tools.
