summary Contained in this years paper proceedings are an unbiased mixed of the precise/imprecise and the computationally faithful/unfaithful. The juxtaposition of this seeming contradictory research and/or projects paints a picture of a broadening computational discourse at the intersection of art, science and technology. The presented research mediates physical, digital, virtual and mixed realities, bridges scales from the singular material compounds to the complex conglomerations associated with the urban environment, and all the while pushing against the limits of design both on Earth and beyond. This year’s conference calls into question how we within the disciplines of architecture and design as well as those outside view the role of computation, production and advanced technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence within architecture, design and the built environment.

summary The paper presents an ongoing research about the design and a possible use of a responsive flexible mold. The mold is developed by integrating its precedents with automation and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The objective of the design is to provide an immersive design tool which has direct link to fabrication. It allows intuitive interaction to its user in order to help with the design and production of complex forms by supporting the designer's implicit skills with computer. The paper presents the design by illustrating the use of the hardware such as the actuators, the sensor and the projector; and by defining the workflow within the software. The paper concludes with the description of a possible use case in which the system is used to design and materialize an object in different scales.

summary This paper presents the design and production processes of a real world organic photovoltaic lightweight installation realized at the University and School of Art, Kassel. It revisits thereby, Frei Otto´s lightweight principles to establish design criteria. Furthermore, we present the possibilities of computational procedures for the design of contemporary lightweight structures within a speculative design setting. Last, we illustrate the benefits of these tools for the design of lightweight structures and the role they played in re-conceptualizing traditional sun-sail typologies within an interdisciplinary student team.

summary Construction simplicity is crucial to cost control, however design complexity is often necessary in order to meet particular spatial performance criteria. This paper presents a case study of a semi-enclosed meeting pod that has a brief that must contend with the seemingly contradictory conditions of the necessary geometric complexities imperative to improved acoustic performance and cost control in construction. A series of deep oculi are introduced as architectural elements to link the pod interior to the outside environment. Their reveals also introduce sound reflection and scattering, which contribute to the main acoustic goal of improved speech privacy. Represented as a three-dimensional funnel like shape, the reveal to each opening is unique in size, depth and angle. Traditionally, the manufacturing of such bespoke architectural elements in many cases resulted in lengthy and costly manufacturing processes. This paper investigates how the complex oculi shape variations can be manufactured using one universal mold. A workflow using mathematical and computational operations, a standardized fabrication approach and customization through tooling results in a high precision digital process to create particular calculated geometries, recalibrated at each stage to account for the paradoxical inexactitudes and inevitable tolerances.

This laboratory performs in real time and real life environment. The work investigates synergised bio-digital (living, non-living, physical, analogue, digital and virtual) prototypical interventions in urban environment that are linked to circular economy and life cycles systems running on blockchain. It represents a holistic systemic interactive and performing approach to design processes that involve living, habitational and edible, social and reproductive, circular and token economic systems. Those together are to cogenerate synergetic landscapes.

summary This paper outlines a research project that explores the participation in, and perception of, advanced technologies in architectural professional practice through a sociotechnical lens and presents empirical research findings from an online survey distributed to employees in five large-scale architectural practices in Sydney, Australia. This argues that while the computational design paradigm might be well accepted, understood, and documented in academic research contexts, the extent and ways that computational design thinking and methods are put-into-practice has to date been less explored. In engineering and construction, technology adoption studies since the mid 1990s have measured information technology (IT) use (Howard et al. 1998; Samuelson and Björk 2013). In architecture, research has also focused on quantifying IT use (Cichocka 2017), as well as the examination of specific practices such as building information modelling (BIM) (Cardoso Llach 2017; Herr and Fischer 2017; Son et al. 2015). With the notable exceptions of Daniel Cardoso Llach (2015; 2017) and Yanni Loukissas (2012), few scholars have explored advanced technologies in architectural practice from a sociotechnical perspective. This paper argues that a sociotechnical lens can net valuable insights into advanced technology engagement to inform pedagogical approaches in architectural education as well as strategies for continuing professional development.

summary The concept of generative design in Architecture and Urbanism can be found in the 60's before the wide availability of computer technology. This paper decodes one of the urban projects by Metabolist in 1960, which was intended to be a generative system applicable to other sites and evolves over time. Through our analysis, we de-code the formulation process, and verified our hypothesis by re-coding into the program using the software, Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. We found that the determinate factors rule more at the macro level of the project, but the parameters are set by taking the local conditions into account. At the micro level, the system leaves more freedom to accommodate various needs, reflecting the philosophy of the Metabolists. The investigation on this historical predecessor can provide useful insights for parameter settings in future generative system design.

summary In 2018 after Typhoon Mangkhut hit Hong Kong, the city lost around 80% of its existing corals. As a consequence, a team consisting of marine biologists and architects have developed a series of performative structures that will be deployed in Hong Kong waters intending to aid new coral growth over the coming years. This paper describes the present research that focuses on the design and fabrication of artificial reef structures utilizing a robotic 3d clay printing method addressing the specificities of Hong Kong marine ecologies. The paper describes further the algorithmic design methodology, the optimization processes in the generation of the printing path, and the methodology for the fabrication processes during the production cycle to achieve even quality and prevent cracking during the drying process.

summary This study applies self-organization as a methodology to understand the complex process of city networks caused by interactions between spatial structures and individual behaviors. The agent-based simulations have been conducted to investigate the visible and invisible networks understanding the self-organized aspects of city development processes. To develop optimal future networks providing connectivity and accessibility this study investigates spatial network configurations from internal individual behavior and movement. As results, it was found that the spatial configurations of the agent movement trails match to the current district boundaries and the similar network patterns were seen in various control values of agent behavior settings. This study contributes to searching out the hierarchy of network structures which is an important factor for re-planning of the way system.

summary This research investigated the possibility of creating adaptable and precise curvilinear surfaces through the deformation of flat wooden surfaces. A prototype design system was developed to accomplish this task. The goal was to take a commonly-used architectural material, which is valued for its environmental sustainability and its aesthetic qualities, and to re-conceptualize it for use in cutting-edge adaptive digital designs. We therefore sought to develop a way to create wooden surfaces that could predictably transform in response to environmental stimuli. We successfully developed and tested the reversible deformation of a wooden surface by laminating a shape-memory polymer onto a kerfed wooden plane. The composite obtains its responsiveness from the shape-memory polymer, and its curvature direction and structural stability from the kerfed wood. The composite is able to deform to a defined curvilinear surface when heated to 40-60 degrees Celsius, and then self-transform back to the original flat surface when cooled. In addition to demonstrating kinetic behavior for a wood-based composite, the prototype offers a practical technique that can be used by designers to create flexible, inexpensive fabrication and packaging strategies.

summary One of the attitudes to recycling plastic in architectural design is it re-printing. 3D Printing of recycled polyethylene tereftalate is in its birth-days. Recycled filament can be bought in Argentina or Netherlands but lack of experience with this reborn material blocks its use in the Czech Republic. Firstly we made a study of settings of the home-3D-printers for this material. Secondly we came with a crowd printing project, which tested the possibility to print structural pieces by on various low-cost printers.

summary This paper introduces the concept of Virtual Place-making through Urban Gamification for architects and designers as a potential application and approach in architecture and urban design. This introduction will be achieved through introducing Augmented Play and Urban Gamification; identifying the urban gamification components based on the game Pokémon Go; exploring the effect of augmented reality games on the experience of architectural and urban spaces; identifying the role of augmented urban gamification in rediscovering cities and redefining architectural spaces. Finally, an investigation of the existing literature concerning making places is combined with the understanding of the impact of digital technologies to construct an understanding of the concept of Virtual Place-making.

title ProjecTables: Augmented CNC tools for sustainable creative practices

summary Computer numerical control (CNC) cutting machines have become essential tools for designers and architects enabling rapid prototyping, model building, and production of high-quality components. Designers often cut from new materials, discarding the irregularly shaped remains. We introduce ProjecTables, a visual augmented reality system for interactive packing of model parts onto sheet materials. ProjecTables enables designers to (re)use scrap materials for computer numerical control cutting that would have been previously thrown away, at the same time supporting esthetic choices related to wood grain, avoiding surface blemishes, and other relevant material properties. We conducted evaluations of ProjecTables with design students from Aarhus School of Architecture, demonstrating that participants could quickly and easily place and orient model parts reducing material waste. Contextual interviews and ideation sessions led to a deeper understanding of current work practices and sustainability issues with computer numerical control cutting machines and identified useful features for interactive packing to reduce waste while supporting esthetic concerns for exhibition quality design projects.

summary This paper introduces concepts and computational methodologies for utilizing neural networks as design tools for architecture and demonstrates their application in the making of doubly curved metal surfaces using a contemporary version of the English Wheel. The research adopts an interdisciplinary approach to develop a novel method to model complex geometric features using computational models that originate from the field of computer vision.

The paper contextualizes the approach with respect to the current state of the art of the usage of artificial neural networks both in architecture and beyond. It illustrates the cyber physical system that is at the core of this research, with a focus on the employed neural network–based computational method. Finally, the paper discusses the repercussions of these design tools on the contemporary design paradigm.

summary This article is related to the research "The immersive experience in 360°: investigation, representation and digital immersion in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 19th and 20th centuries", developed in University AAABBB. The present work will (re)think the Panorama in ‘old-new’ and ‘new-old’ views: panorama-salon’s patent versus Google Cardboard Virtual Reality glasses. It will investigate these immersive systems in order to analyze the esthetics of portable immersive experiences. Thus, 1:1 scale models of Panorama-Salon and Google Cardboard will be built, with Rio de Janeiro's Panorama, the original engraving in Nepveu’s patent, as the basis for this exploration.

summary With a view to design-led digital applications that meet the material world, we create hybrid spaces, where the user/visitor is active and takes part in one action in the material and virtual world. So, today, museums all over the world face the opportunity to re-invent themselves and their relationships with their visitors. They establish a complex non-linear dynamic ecosystem. ?his transformation brings out series of queries, such as the role of the architect that redefines the museum process and the new terms in the museum context. This paper refers to the dynamic changes that define a hybrid environment, describes the transformation into a user-centric museum and the approach to create visitor/user-centered museum and how this was applied into the Archaeological Museum in Chania, Crete. A museum that places visitors at the center of its mission.

summary The objective of this paper is to develop an eye-tracking technology combined with a virtual reality system for an experimental study of an historical street design. Using protocol analysis, a set of design objects, parameters, and subjects are randomly selected for evaluation of the virtual street space of an ancient city. 3-D point-cloud data of spatial behaviors are tracked and analyzed. It is concluded that people with different cultural backgrounds each have a considerably different perception of the street space's characteristics. The methodology described in this paper can be used for spatial design of urban space in the future.

summary This paper describes the development of a Grasshopper-based planning support tool for urban planning. The tool aims at the analysis of demand in educational facilities and the optimization of their location and capacities. It was developed for the use case of Berlin using only publicly available resources and data sets. Through preprocessed GIS- and statistical data plus an easy-access interface, the tool encourages people from different backgrounds and even those with no professional knowledge in planning, to engage in urban decision making. Although being initially aimed at contributing to a moderated participation process, the tool's simple GUI (graphical user interface) and open source backend, make it usable in any setup - without a briefed advisor or the need for later professional evaluation by another party.

summary This paper conceptualizes the Auditory space in terms of hearing process by employing the Enactive Approach. In this context, this study aims investigate the spatial awareness and proposes a research methodology to achieve access to the auditory space where places share similar background noise. This methodology consists of two phases: field recording of the pre-determined route first explored by the Spectrogram Sound Analysis (SSA) technique, secondly with the participation of 8 subjects, a survey analysis based on listening to records captured from the predefined route. This research aims to reveal potential use of SSA by relating to survey examination as a new way of reading space.
