summary Evolution of natural life and subsequently selection of life forms is an interesting topic that has been explored multiple times. This area of research and its application has high relevance in evolutionary design and automated design generation. Taking inspiration from Charles Darwin's theory, all biological species were formed by the process of evolution based on natural selection of the fittest (Darwin, n.d.) this paper explains exploratory research showcasing semi-automatic design generation. This is realized by an interactive artificial selection tool, where the designer or the end user makes key decisions steering the propagation and breeding of future design artifacts. This paper, describes two prototypes and their use cases, highlighting interaction based optimal design selection. One of the prototypes explains a 2d organic shape creator using a metaball shape approach, while the other discusses a spatial layout generation technique for conceptual design.

summary Each year, the United States discards 375 million tons of concrete construction debris to landfills (U.S. EPA 2016), but this is a new paradigm. Past civilizations cannibalized their constructions to produce new architectures (Hopkins 2005). This paper interrogates one cannibalistic methodology from the past known as cyclopean masonry in order to translate this valuable method into a contemporary digital procedure. The work contextualizes the techniques of this method and situates them into procedural recipes which can be applied in contemporary construction. A full-scale prototype is produced utilizing the described method; demolition debris is gathered, scanned, and processed through an algorithmic workflow. Each rubble unit is then minimally carved by a robotic arm and set to compose a new architecture from discarded rubble debris. The prototype merges ancient construction thinking with digital design and fabrication methodologies. It poses material cannibalism as a means of combating excessive construction waste generation.

summary Our research aims to push the limits of 3D printing towards the structural design and optimization. Additive manufacturing has an unique feature which is printing multi-faced complex geometries as easy as simple ones. Therefore additive manufacturing creates the chance of producing really small scaled complex forms. In a structural network, it can be easily understood that the more geometric variations to respond stress, the more adaptive structure will become to respond structural needs. The structural reaction is to be fictionalized by procedural operations and analysis that will be a tool to design multi-scaled fragmented structures. Those operations is to use the structural analysis and material reactions. Their iteration with the overall geometry will form the geometric generations. However the verification of the generations as outcomes of a real 3D printer is crucial. To verify, the precision of additive manufacturing should be sensitive enough that the structural element will function as it's simulated in computer with the algorithm. The sensitivity is important because, even couple of micro-sized problems can cause bigger ones in the structural element itself. The combination of all these variables can enable an initial geometry, to be able to adapt the stuructural needs in every additive generation.

summary This paper presents the application of shape grammars in a real case design problem. The design problem is stated as developing computational acoustic panel solution for classroom with various acoustic problems by modifying 2D pattern, which basically utilizes shape grammars. The study demonstrates interdisciplinary environment of design education and discussions of shape grammars in acoustic panel design and making. It includes different methods to design, like intuitive tendencies, computational thinking, computational tools, and computer simulations. The rule sets of the 2D (pencil-paper-based) pattern are intuitively created by the designer with simultaneous studies of understanding shape grammars. The study consists of three stages. The first stage illustrates 2D pattern generation utilizing computational thinking via shape grammar methodology, second stage illustrates computer generation of 2D pattern with the help of computational tools, and the third stage utilization and modification of this 2D pattern into 3D acoustic panel with feedbacks of computer simulations.

title A framework for generating and evaluating façade designs using a multi-agent system approach

summary Digital design paradigms in architecture have been rooted in representational models which are geometry centered and therefore fail to capture building complexity holistically. Due to a lack of computational design methodologies, existing digital design workflows do little in predicting design performance in the early design stage and in most cases analysis and design optimization are done after a design is fixed. This work proposes a new computational design methodology, intended for use in the area of conceptual design of building design. The proposed methodology is implemented into a multi-agent system design toolkit which facilitates the generation of design alternatives using stochastic algorithms and their evaluation using multiple environmental performance metrics. The method allows the user to probabilistically explore the solution space by modeling the design parameters’ architectural design components (i.e. façade panel) into modular programming blocks (agents) which interact in a bottom-up fashion. Different problem requirements (i.e. level of daylight inside a space, openings) described into agents’ behavior allow for the coupling of data from different engineering fields (environmental design, structural design) into the a priori formation of architectural geometry. In the presented design experiment, a façade panel is modeled into an agent-based fashion and the multi-agent system toolkit is used to generate and evolve alternative façade panel configurations based on environmental parameters (daylight, energy consumption). The designer can develop the façade panel geometry, design behaviors, and performance criteria to evaluate the design alternatives. The toolkit relies on modular and functionally specific programming modules (agents), which provide a platform for façade design exploration by combining existing three-dimensional modeling and analysis software.

summary Virtual reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality is making the headlines in the newspapers and magazines today. But unlike 25 years ago when the first VR rage started with the first Cave Automatic Virtual Environments (CAVE) infrastructures VR is now a technique that is available at very low costs.Especially the recent advances and developments in low cost VR hardware mainly the Head mounted displays (HMD), in particular those that use mobile phones but also the PC based systems like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive together with recent software developments allow this change. Naturally this is based on the interest of the Gaming Industry and the big players in the smartphone industry. But at the moment there are nearly no tools for architects available within these systems. In our point of view there is the big potential that these technologies can give new opportunities to architects and designers to use VR and AR as part of their design toolbox and not only as a presentation tool. For us this is the most important aspect. In our projects we therefore try to develop a workflow that can be easily used even without programming and scripting skills.

summary This work covers the methodological approach that is used to gather information from the wisdom of crowd, to be utilized in a machine learning process for the automatic generation of minimal apartment units. The flexibility in the synthesis process enables the generation of apartment units that seem to be random and some are unsuitable for dwelling. Thus, the synthesis process is required to classify units based on their suitability. The classification is deduced from opinions of human participants on previously generated units. As the definition of "suitability" may be subjective, this work offers a crowdsourcing method in order to reach a large number of participants, that as a whole would allow to produce an objective classification. Gaming elements have been adopted to make the crowdsourcing process more intuitive and inviting for external participants.

summary In the following research, a systematic approach is developed to generate an experiment-based performance model that computes and customizes properties of non-uniform linear materials to accommodate the form of designated curve under bending and natural force. In this case, the test subject is an elastomer strip of non-uniform sections. A novel solution is provided to obtain sufficient training data required for deep learning with an automatic material testing mechanism combining robotic arm automation and image recognition. The collected training data are fed into a deep combination of neural networks to generate a material performance model. Unlike most traditional performance models that are only able to simulate the final form from the properties and initial conditions of the given materials, the trained neural network offers a two-way performance model that is also able to compute appropriate material properties of non-uniform materials from target curves. This network achieves complex forms with minimal and effective programmed materials with complicated nonlinear properties and behaving under natural forces.

summary The paper presents an ongoing research about the design and a possible use of a responsive flexible mold. The mold is developed by integrating its precedents with automation and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). The objective of the design is to provide an immersive design tool which has direct link to fabrication. It allows intuitive interaction to its user in order to help with the design and production of complex forms by supporting the designer's implicit skills with computer. The paper presents the design by illustrating the use of the hardware such as the actuators, the sensor and the projector; and by defining the workflow within the software. The paper concludes with the description of a possible use case in which the system is used to design and materialize an object in different scales.

summary Knowledge of geometric properties of surfaces is crucial for resolution of many manufacturing problems. Developability is an important feature of a surface that allows its manufacture from a flat "strip" of a "flexible" and "non-deformable" material. Digital fabrication technologies and parametric design tools, based on knowledge of geometry, are changing designer way to think. Our research in the field of non-developable surfaces fabrication move from paneling to "kerfing". This technique allows to transform a rigid material in a flexible one. The main problem to solve is how to cut the flat shape to obtain the design surface.

summary Currently, the land regulation plans define the urban micro-scale, producing standardized and pre-dimensioned blocks and lots, generating monotony, poor urban quality and high infrastructure costs. In the quest for sustainability, studies point to a density and a certain degree of population density to enable urban infrastructures with qualitative and quantitative gains, through concepts of compactness, completeness and connectivity. summary This project explores the advantages of employing continuum material topology optimization in a 3D non-standard lattice structure through fiber additive manufacturing processes (Figure 1). Additive manufacturing (AM) has gained rapid adoption in architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC). However, existing optimization techniques often overlook the mechanical anisotropy of AM processes, resulting in suboptimal structural properties, with a focus on layer-by-layer or planar processes. Materials, processes, and techniques considering anisotropy behavior (Kwon et al. 2018) could enhance structural performance (Xie 2022). Research on 3D printing materials with high anisotropy is limited (Eichenhofer et al. 2017), but it holds potential benefits (Liu et al. 2018). Spatial lattices, such as space frames, maximize structural efficiency by enhancing flexural rigidity and load-bearing capacity using minimal material (Woods et al. 2016). From a structural design perspective, specific non-standard lattice geometries offer great potential for reducing material usage, leading to lightweight load-bearing structures (Shelton 2017). The flexibility and freedom of shape inherent to AM offers the possibility to create aggregated continuous truss-like elements with custom topologies.

summary Construction simplicity is crucial to cost control, however design complexity is often necessary in order to meet particular spatial performance criteria. This paper presents a case study of a semi-enclosed meeting pod that has a brief that must contend with the seemingly contradictory conditions of the necessary geometric complexities imperative to improved acoustic performance and cost control in construction. A series of deep oculi are introduced as architectural elements to link the pod interior to the outside environment. Their reveals also introduce sound reflection and scattering, which contribute to the main acoustic goal of improved speech privacy. Represented as a three-dimensional funnel like shape, the reveal to each opening is unique in size, depth and angle. Traditionally, the manufacturing of such bespoke architectural elements in many cases resulted in lengthy and costly manufacturing processes. This paper investigates how the complex oculi shape variations can be manufactured using one universal mold. A workflow using mathematical and computational operations, a standardized fabrication approach and customization through tooling results in a high precision digital process to create particular calculated geometries, recalibrated at each stage to account for the paradoxical inexactitudes and inevitable tolerances.

summary This study uses parametric design to optimize the process and application of the inflatable method. Inflatable design has advantages of light weight, integral forming, volume change, etc., but the manufacturing process often requires the development of molds, a large number of manual heat seals, etc. Inspired by the structure principle of amputated wing tube structure, coupled with the advantages of parameterization and digital tool heat sealing, The same material can be made at different tightness, because the tight design with different angles has more structural characteristics and bending properties, thereby generating more complex spatial structures. Different materials also have corresponding manufacturing methods, which also increase the opportunities for application in architectural design.

summary Daylight standards are one of the main factors for the shape and image of cities. With urbanization and ongoing densification of cities, new planning regulations are emerging in order to manage access to sun light. In Estonia a daylight standard defines the rights of light for existing buildings and the direct solar access requirement for new premises. The solar envelope method and environmental simulations to compute direct sun light hours on building façades can be used to design buildings that respect both daylight requirements. However, no existing tool integrates both methods in an easy to use manner. Further, the assessment of façade performance needs to be related to the design of interior layouts and of building clusters to be meaningful to architects. Hence, the present work presents a computational design workflow for the evaluation and optimisation of high density building clusters in urban environments in relation to direct solar access requirements and selected types of floor plans.

summary A persistent challenge to the more widespread use of shape grammars in architectural research is the creation of rules and rule sets for application in design contexts, while leaving space for design creativity despite the limitations of a rule-based system. A hybrid of associative and rule-based approaches may alleviate this. We present one such development, a Grasshopper shape grammar plug-in that embeds a rule-based approach within a parametric modelling environment. It supports shape emergence, visual enumeration of rule application results, and the parametric definition of shapes and shape rules even when selecting a non-parametric rule matching mechanism. Grasshopper's ability to handle geometries and text together allows for external descriptions and labels as attributes to points, enabling definition and application of compound, geometric and description rules. Well-known examples from shape grammar literature are implemented using the plug-in, with a focus on rule definition and application in the context of interaction between the parametric modelling environment and the rule-based interpreter, and simultaneous use of geometry, descriptions, and descriptions as attributes in rules.

title User-centered shape grammars for housing transformations: towards post-handover grammars

summary This paper presents a post-handover shape grammar for introducing inhabitants wishes in the transformation of individual houses of the Malagueira housing complex by Álvaro Siza Vieira in Évora, Portugal. The presented research includes a case study developed in the context of the workshop Gramática da Forma em estudos de habitação - análise, geração e customização at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In this paper we present the first developments of the Malagueira transformation grammar, including corpus of analysis, shape rules, and derivations, and we discuss the opportunities that shape grammar brings to user-centered design.

summary What if material interfaces could physically adapt to the user’s emotional state in order to develop a new affective interaction? By using emotional computing technologies to track facial expressions, material interfaces can help to regulate emotions. They can serve either as a tool for intelligence augmentation or as a means of leveraging an empathic relationship by developing an affective loop with the user. This paper explores how color- and shape-changing operations can be used as interactive design tools to convey emotional information, and is illustrated by two projects, one at the intimate scale of fashion and one at a more architectural scale. By engaging with design, art, psychology, and computer and material science, this paper envisions a world where material systems can detect the emotional responses of a user and reconfigure themselves in order to enter into a feedback loop with the user’s affective state and influence social interaction.

summary Mexico is one of the most urbanized countries in the Global South, and simultaneously faces a rapidly increasing population and a deluge of inadequate housing (URBANET 2019). In 2016, it was estimated that 40 percent of all private residences in Mexico were considered inadequate by UN-Habitat (UN-Habitat 2018). As informal housing constitutes over half of all Mexican housing construction, the most vulnerable groups of the population are particularly impacted. Therefore, there is a serious need to innovate in the area of low-cost building construction for housing in Mexico. This research explores how shape-optimized concrete and earth construction could help provide adequate housing without jeopardizing the country’s commitment to sustainability.
