summary Even though architectural modelling radically evolved over the course of its history, the current integration of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) components in the corresponding design tasks is mostly limited to enhancing visualisation. Little to none of these tools attempt to tackle the challenge of modelling within immersive environments, that calls for new input modalities in order to move away from the traditional mouse and keyboard combination. In fact, relying on 2D devices for 3D manipulations does not seem to be effective as it does not offer the same degrees of freedom. We therefore present a solution that brings VR modelling capabilities to Grasshopper, a popular parametric design tool. Together with its associated proof-of-concept application, our extension offers a glimpse at new perspectives in that field. By taking advantage of them, one can edit geometries with real-time feedback on the generated models, without ever leaving the virtual environment. The distinctive characteristics of VR applications provide a range of benefits without obstructing design activities. The designer can indeed experience the architectural models at full scale from a realistic point-of-view and truly feels immersed right next to them.

keywords The paper discusses co-design, development, production, application of TreeHugger (see Figure 1). The co-design among community and trans-disciplinary participants with different expertise required scope of media mix, switching between analogue, digital and back again. This involves different degrees of physical and digital 'GIGA-Mapping' (Sevaldson, 2011, 2015), 'Grasshopper3d' (Davidson, 2017) scripting and mix of digital and analogue fabrication to address the real life world. The critical participation of this 'Time-Based Design' (Sevaldson, 2004, 2005) process is the interaction of the prototype with eco-systemic agency of the adjacent environment - the eco-systemic performance. The TreeHugger is a responsive solid wood insect hotel, generating habitats and edible landscaping (Creasy, 2004) on bio-tope in city centre of Prague. To extend the impact, the code was uploaded for communities to download, local-specifically edit and apply worldwide. Thus, the fusion of discussed processes is multi-scaled and multi-layered, utilised in emerging design field: Systemic Approach to Architectural Performance.

summary Bioplastics are by their very nature parametric materials, programmable through the selection of constituent components and the ratios in which they appear, and as such present significant potential as architectural building materials for reasons beyond sustainability and biodegradability. This paper presents a system through which rigid three-dimensional doubly curved hyperbolic paraboloid shapes are automatically formed from two-dimensional sheet casts by harnessing the inherent flexibility and expressiveness of bioplastics. The system uses a gelatin-based bioplastic supplemented with granular organic matter from food waste in conjunction with a split-frame casting system that enables the self-formation of three-dimensional geometries by directing the force of the bioplastic's uniform contraction as it dries. By adjusting the food waste added to the bioplastic, its properties can be tuned according to formal and performative needs; here, dehydrated granulated orange peel and dehydrated spent espresso-ground coffee are used both to impart their inherent characteristics and also to influence the degree of curvature of the resulting bioplastic surfaces. Multi-material casts incorporating both orange peel bioplastic and coffee grounds bioplastic are shown to exert a greater influence over the degree of curvature than either bioplastic alone, and skeletonized panels are shown to exhibit the same behavior as their solid counterparts. Potential developments of the technology so as to gain greater control of the curvature performance, particularly in the direction of computer-controlled additive manufacturing, are considered, as is the potential of application in architectural scale.

title Printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic Multi-Bias Additive Manufacturing

summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary The last three decades have witnessed the explosion of technology and its impact on the architecture discipline which has drastically changed the methods of design. New techniques such as Agent-based modeling (ABM) and Virtual Reality (VR) have been widely implemented in architectural and urban design domains, yet the potential integration between these two methods remains arguably unexploited. The investigation in this paper aims to probe the following questions: How can architects and urban designers be informed more comprehensively by melding ABM and VR techniques at the preliminary/conceptual design stage? Which platform is considered more appropriate to facilitate a user-friendly system and reduces the steep learning curve? And what are the potential benefits of this approach in architectural education, particularly for the design studio environment? With those questions, we proposed a prototype in Unity, a multi-platform development tool that originated from the game industry, to simulate and visualize pedestrian behaviors in urban environments with immersive design experience and tested it in a scenario-based case study. This approach has also been further tested in an architectural design studio, demonstrating its technical feasibility as well as the potential contributions to the pedagogy.

summary Fabricating complex curvature in concrete panel typically required unique one-off formwork which is usually computer numerically controlled (CNC) milled, generating enormous waste as a by-product. What if, we can produce complex curvature in concrete with minimal or no immediate construction waste? This paper presents a novel machine designed by a team of architects and engineer to eliminate waste in concrete casting. Using a hyperbolic paraboloid geometric model, the machine produces variable shape using a single mould design reducing waste and cost to the casting process. The paper discussed the design framework of the system and its fabrication workflow. The outcome is digitally scanned and verified to satisfy industry standard. The paper concludes by reviewing the application of the system and highlighting the need for future research into digital fabrication and design that is less wasteful and waste conscious to better the process of constructing our built environment.

summary Physarum polycephalum, also called slime mold or myxamoeba, has started attracting the attention of those architects, urban designers, and scholars, who work in experimental trans- and flexi-disciplines between architecture, computer sciences, biology, art, cognitive sciences or soft matter; disciplines that build on cybernetic principles. Slime mold is regarded as a bio-computer with intelligence embedded in its physical mechanisms. In its plasmodium stage, the single cell organism shows geometric, morphological and cognitive principles potentially relevant for future complexity in human-machines-networks (HMN) in architecture and urban design. The parametric bio-blob presents itself as a geometrically regulated graph structure-morphologically adaptive, logistically smart. It indicates cognitive goal-driven navigation and the ability to externally memorize (like ants). Physarum communicates with its environment. The paper introduces physarum polycephalum in the context of 'digital architecture' as a biological computer for self-organizing 2D- to 4D-geometry generation.

summary Against the background of urbanization and the fast growth of population in big cities, there will be more and more high-rises emerged in the future. In some big cities, the various layers of public transpiration networks such as metro systems also played an essential role in the urban life. In the verticalized urban environment, the complexity of the multi-layers space system connected by various horizontal and vertical connections have been beyond people's cognition. The boundaries between private space and public space, outdoor-space and indoor-space have already blurred. The graph theory based urban spatial analysis approaches are adopted in urban studies to tackle with the urban complexity issues. However, at present, most of the methods proposed are specializing in open urban spaces, and they cannot describe the three-dimensional completely and accurately. Therefore, in this paper, a new graph theory based representation method, the Dynamic Geometric Network Model, which adapted to the verticalized urban environment will be proposed. And the approach of how to automatically generate such a representation model according to the urban layout will also be introduced.

summary The utilization of point cloud as a 3D laser scanning product has reached across multi-disciplines in terms of data processing, data visualization, and data analysis. This study particularly investigates further the use of typical attributes of raw point cloud data consisting of XYZ (position information), RGB (colour information) and I (intensity information). By exploring the optical and thermal properties of the given point cloud data, it aims at compensating the material and texture information that is usually remained behind by architects during the conceptual design stage. Calculation of the albedo, emissivity and the reflectance values from the existing context specifically direct the architects to predict the type of materials for the proposed design in order to keep the balance of the surrounding Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. Therefore, architects can have a comprehensive analysis of the existing context to deal with the microclimate condition before a design decision phase.

summary This paper examines a novel, integrated and collaborative approach to design and fabrication, enabled through Mixed Reality. In a bespoke fabrication process, the design is controlled and altered by users in holographic space, through a custom, multi-modal interface. Users input is live-streamed and channeled to 3D modelling environment,on-demand robotic fabrication and AR-guided assembly. The Holographic Interface is aimed at promoting man-machine collaboration. A bespoke pipeline translates hand gestures and audio into CAD and numeric fabrication. This enables non-professional participants engage with a plethora of novel technology. The feasibility of Mixed Reality for architectural workflow was tested through an interactive installation for the makeCity Berlin 2018 festival. Participants experienced with on-demand design, fabrication an AR-guided assembly. summary The paper presents the development of a building system made from solid timber that fulfils the requirements of modern building skins while expanding the design possibilities through innovation in computational design and digital fabrication. Multiple strategies are employed to develop a versatile construction system that generates structure, enclosure and insulation while enabling a broad design space for contemporary architectural expression. The basic construction unit augments the comparatively high insulation values of solid timber by cutting longitudinal slits into beams, generating air chambers that further inhibit thermal conductivity. These units are further enhanced through a joinery system that uses advanced parametric modeling and computerized control to augment traditional joinery techniques. Prototypes of the system are tested at a building component level with digital models and physical laboratory tests. It is further evaluated in a demonstrator building to test development and further refine design, fabrication and assembly methods. Results are integrated into proposals for new methods of implementation. The results of the research thus far demonstrate the validity of the strategy, and continuing research will improve its viability as a building system.

summary This research aims at investigating BCI technologies in the broad scope of CAAD applications exploiting early visual cognition in computational design. More precisely, this paper will describe the investigation of key BCI and ML components for the implementation and development of a software supporting this research : Uchron. It will be organised as follows. Firstly, it will introduce the pursued interest and contribution that visual-ERP EEG based BCI application for Generative Design may provide through a synthetic review of precedents and BCI technology. Secondly, selected BCI components will be described and a methodology will be presented to provide an appropriate framework for a CAAD software approach. This section main focus is on the processing component of the BCI. It distinguishes two key aspects of discrimination and generation in its design and proposes a new model based on GAN for modulated adversarial design. Emphasis will be made on the explicit use of inference loops integrating fast human cognitive responses and its individual capitalisation through time in order to reflect towards the generation of design and architectural features.

summary The aim of this workshop is to introduce participants to the co-design approach using a Social VR system (without headsets): Hyve-3D (Hybrid Virtual Environment 3D). The system affords simultaneous multi-user co-design (local and remote) using 3D sketches (exportable as vectors) and imported 3D textured geometries, photogrammetry models and point-clouds. Participants will be trained to use the suitable representational ecosystem and the verbal protocols specific for co-design as a particular kind of collaborative design where each will be simultaneously ideating ad-hoc projects instead of cooperating (where individual designs are put together in a later stage).

summary A persistent challenge to the more widespread use of shape grammars in architectural research is the creation of rules and rule sets for application in design contexts, while leaving space for design creativity despite the limitations of a rule-based system. A hybrid of associative and rule-based approaches may alleviate this. We present one such development, a Grasshopper shape grammar plug-in that embeds a rule-based approach within a parametric modelling environment. It supports shape emergence, visual enumeration of rule application results, and the parametric definition of shapes and shape rules even when selecting a non-parametric rule matching mechanism. Grasshopper's ability to handle geometries and text together allows for external descriptions and labels as attributes to points, enabling definition and application of compound, geometric and description rules. Well-known examples from shape grammar literature are implemented using the plug-in, with a focus on rule definition and application in the context of interaction between the parametric modelling environment and the rule-based interpreter, and simultaneous use of geometry, descriptions, and descriptions as attributes in rules.

summary This study constitutes the first step of a broader PhD project, which aims to build a bridge between the architectural and the juridical examination of the typicality of low-income settlements within the city of Rio de Janeiro, the favelas. The purpose is to define a rule-based typological analysis to ease the process of evaluating the typicality of favelas and the possible, desirable form of its regularisation. This objective strives to equip all the actors involved in the debate with an analytical device able to represent the socially acknowledged, yet unofficial, rules that have been moulding favelas so far. By this means, this study tests shape grammar as a methodology for approaching this interdisciplinary issue. A shape grammar for a first case study, Parque Royal favela, located in the Governor Island, is presented. As preliminary results of the research, the paper encompasses the three early stages of construction of the case study: invasion, expansion and consolidation.

summary The paper proposes a computational tool for simulating the users' urban cognitive systems, or more specifically the long-term memory associated with the knowledge of urbanism and its related urban visual features. The tool builds on our comprehensive theory of Urbanism, which presents a monolithic, structured, comprehensive, professional conception of Urbanism based on which any relativistic users' urban conceptions could be predicted as a restructuring of the professional conception. These versatile relativistic conceptions would emerge based on a nurturing environment, which is a conception of the empirical/anthropological collected data of the intended users' reflections against their preferred constructed urban environments. Once the users' conceptions of Urbanism are formulated, which is the first phase of the simulation, the users' impressions against any examined urban constructs are attainable, which is the second phase of the simulation. The two phases, the framework, would be monolithically represented by a proposed novel cellular graph. The proposed computational tool is thought of as a robust technique for the computational incorporation of the users' urban identity, and some of its constituents could be considered as a needed common platform of communication for a successful Human-Computer interaction in the field of urban analysis/design.

keywords Hotwire cutting of Styrofoam or Polystyrene has been a popular tool for developing fast prototypes by the architectural community. The introduction of multi-axis industrial robots in the architectural curriculum, and the enhancement of the design to fabrication process by software bridging the gap, provided an alternative meaning to the traditional mostly representational process of hotwire cutting.This paper sets out to document and assess the procedural methodology and the results of a series of integrated design to fabrication experiments that took place in the Institut für Experimentelle Architektur-Hochbau. By channelling design intention towards a component assembly for a translucent effect, students were asked to utilise industrial robots to fabricate and prototype via hotwire cutting, designs that refer to architectural elements. These elements, mainly due to their scale and the commercial availability of bulk Styrofoam panels, can lead to functional or ornamental representations of discrete elements, which can be assembled together as part of a greater design.

summary This document aims to analyze the lighting system design at the Beyeler Foundation, which is controlled by digital devices. The domination of light is considered its architectural achievement, which generates a peculiar spatial effect. The discussion draws on the white cube concept, as applied in exhibition spaces, on the notion of device, as proposed by Flusser, and on the black box expounded by Latour's theory. The design is understood as the evolution of the white cube, since it maintains the premise of neutral space, but also remains open to the external environment through a glass roof equipped with computerized shutters.

summary Architects rely on the graphic language of words and art to bridge intention and design, just as it has always been. Yet, passing an idea or concept from mental imagery to design practice through 2D, 3D, and 4D design filters is especially challenging in BIM technology. Severe limitations hinder or even preclude BIMs use in certain complex design tasks, as identified in the Anti-Box, "The anti-box celebrates the death of the ninety-degree angle- in fact, every angle." (de Graaf 2017). Compatibility and constraints determine the most appropriate uses of BIM software, from designing mundane shopping mall developments to complex architectural engineering feats that stagger the imagination. BIM's main benefit is in the middle when it is creatively employed by professional architects in multi-discipline collaborations, well versed in symbolic representation, of designs conceived of multivalent design factors: narrative, form, function, multi-sensory access, materiality, space, and environment.

summary This paper discusses the authors’ experiences and lessons learned through designing and constructing small- and large-scale robotic prototypes and the fully integrated use of VR and AR for design. Also of focus here are the methodological tools utilized to implement this student-led research in an interdisciplinary educational environment, as well as the design explorations of Mars habitation systems. Through the systems engineering approach, students will generate ideas that may or may not make it to the final design development stage, but may potentially be valuable to future real exploration habitats and mission architectures. The final prototype allows an assessment of the focus parameters, which are the vessels’ transformation capacities and layout adaption. The design objective of this project is to examine strategies for commonality between an interplanetary vehicle (IPV) and a Mars surface habitat. The presented design proposals address this challenge to create a common habitation system in both habitats so that crew members will be familiar with the layout, function, and location throughout the expedition. The design tools operate at the intersection of architectural layout design, mechanics, and structural design, and use origami folding techniques and structural form-finding concepts to generate shell action rigidity. In addition, the project develops a strategy for mobility and transformation of the surface habitat prior to its transformed configuration. The value here lies in understanding lessons from this strategy for both the design process as well as efficiency and optimization in design as a model for terrestrial design.
