summary Currently, the land regulation plans define the urban micro-scale, producing standardized and pre-dimensioned blocks and lots, generating monotony, poor urban quality and high infrastructure costs. In the quest for sustainability, studies point to a density and a certain degree of population density to enable urban infrastructures with qualitative and quantitative gains, through concepts of compactness, completeness and connectivity. This study presents possibilities of batch sizing using the Grammatical method of the Form, through morphological configurations and rules presents possibilities of generation of new formats, distribution of urban lots in the neighborhood Valentina, in João Pessoa - PB and discusses results.

summary Design tools like Grasshopper are often used to either generate novel forms, to automate certain design processes or to incorporate scientific factors. However, any Grasshopper definition has certain assumptions about design and space built into it from its earliest genesis, when the initial algorithm is set out. Correspondingly, implicit theoretical positions are built into definitions, and therefore its results. Approaching parametric design as a question of architectural, landscape architectural or urban design theory allows the breaking down of traditional boundaries between the technical and the historical or theoretical, and the way parametric design, and urban design history & theory, can be conveyed in the teaching environment. Once the boundaries between software and history & theory are transgressed, Grasshopper can be a way of testing the principles embedded in historical designs and thus these two disciplines can be joined. In urban design, there is an inherent clash between an ideal model and existing urban geography or morphology, and also between formal (qualitative) and numerical (quantitative) aspects. If a model provides a necessary vision for future development, an existing topography then results from the continuous human and natural modifications of a territory. To explore this hypothesis, the “Urban Design Representation” subject in the Master of Urban Design program at the University of Cape Town taught in 2017 & 2018 was approached “parametrically” from these two opposite, albeit convergent, starting points: the conceptual/rational versus the physical/empiric representations of a territory. In this framework, Grasshopper was used to represent typical standards and parameters of modern urban planning (for example, Floor/Area Ratio, height and distance between buildings, site coverage, etc), and a typological approach was adopted to study and “decode” the relationship between public and private space, between the street, the block and topography, between solids and voids. This methodology permits a cross-comparison of different urban design models and the immediate evaluation of their formal outputs derived from parametric data.

title Conceptualizing the evolution of Tmor-Da

summary The urban dynamics observable in an informal settlement are akin to the characteristics of a complex adaptive system. In this paper, we describe an Agent-Based Model designed to simulate the urban dynamics of an informal settlement, Tmor-Da, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The overarching goal was to understand the possible rules that guided the development of built forms and the use of residue spaces in Tmor-Da. A series of simulation experiments were used to examine alternative hypotheses derived from field work and desktop analysis related to morphological changes associated with spatial units, including homes, shops, the orphanage, church and temple. The results suggest that the complex, emergent patterns encapsulated within the informal settlement could be reproduced in a simulation model. We conclude that our model can be used as an investigative tool to explore the most plausible factors contributing to the evolutionary trajectory of an informal settlement.

title Multiagent approach to temporal and punctual urban redevelopment in dynamic, informal contexts

summary This article presents design research speculating on computationally enabled planning approaches for urban sites where informal developments make conventional masterplans ineffectual. The project advances the thesis that the spatial complexity of urban sites can be effectively studied through a network or mesh representation and that rapid change in informal settlements is not an obstacle to planned redevelopment but can be addressed through dynamic modeling and punctual interventions. In this way, the rapid turnover of the built environment can be a mechanism through which to introduce directed planning without canceling out bottom-up actions. In the case study presented, we use a multiagent approach that is able to adapt to a continuously changing context. The agents are driven by weighted random walks and compute localized analyses of the morphology of the network of public space as they move. The information generated by the multiagent simulation is aggregated to identify potential modifications to the urban fabric, with an emphasis on pedestrian connectivity.

summary Heritage protection entails the integrated construction of conservation and collective memory based on historical authenticity. Therefore, the study of history is essential for accomplishing the task of heritage conservation. This article applies a space syntax methodology to explore how urban morphology evolved at a heritage site on Kulangsu Island. The analysis reveals the characteristic features of urban morphology and offers suggestions for optimizing the historical space of world heritage. The effectiveness and limitations of the research are also debated and substantiated.

summary In architecture, there was an evolution from Computer-Aided Design (CAD) to Building Information Modelling (BIM), but in urban planning and design, where the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are often used, there is no such analogy. This paper reviews research in typo-morphology, a branch of urban morphology, procedural modelling of buildings and cities and 3D city modelling and visualizations. It present a generic morphological structure of urban elements and discusses them as programming classes in City Information Modelling (CIM) and the application of CIM in urban design practice. Urban design can be understood as art of juxtaposing and arranging urban design elements such as streets, sidewalks, buildings, building façades, landscaping, etc. Designing implies experimentation and play for design elements within design worlds. CIM should integrate procedural modelling, urban morphological research with toolboxes of design elements and rules of combinations. CIM should serve as digital design worlds where urban designers can play with design elements, model and analyse urban scenarios with generative procedures, rules and typological processes.

summary Urban morphology significantly impacts resident's well-being. This study examines the impact of urban environments on the sense of well-being, using virtual reality as a research environment. Most of the world's population already live in urban localities; and it is expected that in two decades, more than 70% of the total population of the planet will be city dwellers(UN 2018). This study examines the impact of various urban configurations on dwellers well-being. Participants were presented with simulated pedestrian movement through 24 virtual urban environments. The environments differed by density level, spatial configurations, vegetation, and commerce. Participants assessed each alternative through structured questionnaires. It has been found that the density and presence of vegetation and commerce in the urban area have a significant impact on the subject's well-being in urban environments. extreme levels of densification have a negative effect on subjects' feelings, but vegetation and commerce, especially at the high levels of density, can improve them. In this research we established the framework for planning principles that can improve urban densification processes. An understanding of the wellbeing of urban dwellers, and the parameters that can influence this, will help urban designers and planners in creating better urbanized future environments.

summary The article, in the general extent, touches upon issue of the awareness of the cityscape in morphological terms. It concerns in particular the system of open spaces as an unique component of the urban structure of cities. The measurability of the phenomena still seems to be a challenge. The considerations presented in the article are embedded in the environment of virtual city models. The 3D-Negative (N3D) method developed by the author for generating and analyzing open space geometries in the virtual city model environment is used for example area and volume representation of urban structures in terms of space between buildings. The source analytic virtual city model data is generated on the basis of combination of DSM and DTM models. The cases discussed in the article prove the intuitive perception of open spaces in a quantifiable way. In the aspect of spatial data standardization, the presented analyses are embedded in the cityGML LOD1 standard.

summary In this paper we introduce mineR- a tool that integrates statistical data analysis inside the parametric design environment Grasshopper. We first discuss how the integration of statistical data analysis would improve the parametric modelling workflow. Then we present the statistical programming language R. Thereafter, we show how mineR is built to facilitate the use of R in the context of parametric modelling. Using two example cases, we demonstrate the potential of implementing mineR in the context of urban design and analysis. Finally, we discuss the results and possible further developments.

summary The project aims to investigate the possibility of VR in a combination of visualizing high-dimensional urban data. Our study proposes a data-based tool for urban planners, architects, and researchers to 3D visualize and experience an urban quarter. Users have a possibility to choose a specific part of a city according to urban data input like "buildings, streets, and landscapes". This data-based tool is based on an algorithm to translate data from Shapefiles (.sh) in a form of a virtual cube model. The tool can be scaled and hence applied globally. The goal of the study is to improve understanding of the connection and analysis of high-dimensional urban data beyond a two-dimensional static graph or three-dimensional image. Professionals may find an optimized condition between urban data through abstract simulation. By implementing this tool in the early design process, researchers have an opportunity to develop a new vision for extending and optimizing urban materials.

summary The increased interactivity of digital simulation tools has offered a wide range of opportunities that may provoke a paradigmatic shift in urban design practice. Yet, research results did not provide any clear evidence that such shift seems to exist. Further studies are required to examine the methods and impact of their usage on decision-making and design outcome. To that goal, this research uses the single-case study design that has been pursued in three phases: literature review, online survey, and semi-structured interviews. The results have shown inadequacies, inconsistency, and ineffectiveness of usage of the tools that are most appropriate to the design activities of each phase and thus a limited impact on critical areas of the decision-making. The impact of the tools' usage is found to be correlated with not only the extent of their usage, but also with a variety of procedural and substantive factors such as the plan methodology, extent of tool's usage, choice of the appropriate tool, and planners' skills and capabilities in using those tools.

title Algorithmic investigation of the actual and virtual design space of historic hexagonal-based Islamic patterns

summary This research challenges the long-standing paradigm that considers compositional analysis to be the key to researching historical Islamic geometric patterns. Adopting a mathematical description shows that the historical focus on existing forms has left the relevant structural similarities between historical Islamic geometric patterns understudied. The research focused on the hexagonal-based Islamic geometric patterns and found that historical designs correlate to each other beyond just the formal dimension and that deep, morphological connections exist in the structures of historical singularities. Using historical evidence, this article identifies these connections and presents a categorization system that groups designs together based on their “morphogenetic” characteristics.

summary The utilization of point cloud as a 3D laser scanning product has reached across multi-disciplines in terms of data processing, data visualization, and data analysis. This study particularly investigates further the use of typical attributes of raw point cloud data consisting of XYZ (position information), RGB (colour information) and I (intensity information). By exploring the optical and thermal properties of the given point cloud data, it aims at compensating the material and texture information that is usually remained behind by architects during the conceptual design stage. Calculation of the albedo, emissivity and the reflectance values from the existing context specifically direct the architects to predict the type of materials for the proposed design in order to keep the balance of the surrounding Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. Therefore, architects can have a comprehensive analysis of the existing context to deal with the microclimate condition before a design decision phase.

The presented research mediates physical, digital, virtual and mixed realities, bridges scales from the singular material compounds to the complex conglomerations associated with the urban environment, and all the while pushing against the limits of design both on Earth and beyond. summary Traditionally, Reciprocal Frame (RF) structures feature the use of linear materials such as rods, beams and bars. Their potential in varied curvature and doubly-curved forms illustrate ongoing advances in computation and fabrication. Flexible to using small available materials that span large areas, RF systems appeal as a popular research topic to demonstrate tectonic and engineering feats. However, RF using planar materials is a non-traditional application and is not widely explored in research. This paper discusses RF research projects that feature planar custom shapes with unique 3D tectonic capabilities. Their aesthetic properties and structural opportunities will be discussed and evaluated. The objective of this paper is to examine the use of planar materials and highlight the potential of irregular 3D reciprocal systems. The use of custom shapes in a reciprocal system and their unique growth morphologies presents a novel direction in the practice of reciprocal systems.

keywords The present paper is part of an ongoing research that deals with the inclusion of the effect of bio-luminescence as a substitute or complimentary light source in urban environments, with the main scope of reducing energy consumption for lighting in exterior areas. The paper discusses the selection of genetically modified transgenic plants for use in the climate of Greece and through bibliographic reference and preliminary experiments the modeling of a simulated light source that has the bio-luminescent properties of a specific plant. The modeled light source can then be used in lighting simulation software. Results, through the lighting simulation of the modeled transgenic plant in a case study scenario, support the fact that bio-luminescent plants can be used as supporting lighting agents in a suburban setting and eventually reduce energy consumption for lighting.

summary As we step into a new data-based information age, it is important to get citizens involved in the whole design process. Our research tries to build up a user-based urban information system by collecting the data of neighborhood land use preference from all the residents through gaming. The result of each individual decision will be displayed in real time using Augmented Reality technology, while the collective decision dataset will be stored, analyzed and learnt by computer, forming an optimal layout that meets the highest demand of the community. A pre-experiment has been conducted in a. an abstract virtual site and b. an existing site by collecting opinions from 122 participants, which shows that the system works well as a new method for collaborative design. This system has the potential to be applied both in realistic planning processes, as a negotiation toolkit, and in virtual urban forming, in the case of computer games or space colonization.

Therefore, it is necessary to value pedestrians and consequently active mobility, giving priority to the concepts of the Transportation Oriented Development (TOD) methodology. Although the Master Plan (BELO HORIZONTE, 2019) proposes that areas located in regional centralities are enhancing active mobility, can residents actually benefit from these resources at a walkable distance to access basic services? Thus, the aim of this research is to utilize digital technologies to visualize, analyze, and assess pedestrians' access conditions to commerce and basic services, identifying areas lacking infrastructure. The goal is for the model to serve as a reference for the development of public policies. To achieve this, metadata was used for parametric modeling to study walkability in the peripheral region of the city of Belo Horizonte.

summary This article presents the project of the urban research platform IndAtlas, currently in early development stage by UFMG’s Research Group Indisciplinar. Through the association of crowdsourcing tools, a spatial database and the production of visualizations of different types, it is intended to create a Web platform for collecting, analyzing and depicting information about processes of production and transformation of urban space. It is proposed that the phenomena (themes) investigated in the platform are approached mainly from four axes: 1) spatial / territorial; 2) temporal; 3) social; 4) communicational. To do this, we try to combine online collaborative maps with the production of dynamic timelines and visualizations of networks of social actors (graphs), connected with social networks and Wiki pages. The article will address the development of Indisciplinar’s working method, which guided the proposal of the platform, as well as the functional and technical aspects to be observed for its implementation, the proposed architecture and the importance of interoperability for the project. Finally, the inquiries derived from the first test experiment of an IndAtlas test prototype will be presented. The experiment took place in a workshop belonging to the Cidade Eletrônika 2018 Festival – an arts and technology event. The workshop was offered in January of the same year, and it proposed a collaborative cartography of the Santa Tereza neighborhood, in Belo Horizonte / MG – a traditional neighborhood of great importance for historical heritage, currently subject to great real estate pressure and the focus of a series of territorial disputes.
