summary With the rapid increase in the accessible data, available information surpasses one's ability to extract knowledge from, which puts a great emphasis on the skills of the individual to reach and use relevant information, adapt to changing conditions and sustain respective skills. ICT skills, critical thinking skills, and communication/collaboration skills emerge as the survival skills and key factors for individuals to cope with the demands of the 21st-century. It is known that educational institutions have struggles in changing the curricula/teaching system in coping with the requirements of the rapidly evolving industry. Thus, workshops gained more importance in different levels which are a part of curricular or extracurricular activities to re-furnish existing skills or gain new skills. In the scope of this study, the learning and teaching approaches based on STEAM approach are assessed through a three-day workshop aiming to illustrate how these survival skills can be conveyed and embedded into the architecture education. The workshop is designed to be inclusive for all architecture students regardless of their level of education or background knowledge/skills. Within the scope of this paper, the conduction strategies of the workshop are covered in detail to highlight the importance of these survival skills along with the modes of teaching and share the best practices and gained knowledge for future works.

summary Starting with the first founded university, higher education has been evolving continuously, yet the pace of this evolution is not as fast as the changes that we observe in practice. Today, this discrepancy is not only limited to the content of the curricula but also the expected skills and competencies. It is evident that 21st-century skills and competencies should be much different than the ones delivered in the 20th-century due to rapidly developing and spreading new design and information technologies. Each and every discipline has been in continuous search of the "right" way of formalization of education both content and skill wise. This paper focuses on architectural design education incorporating discussions on the role of STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics). The study presents the outcomes of the ArchiSTEAM project, which is funded by EU Erasmus+ Programme, with the aim of re-positioning STEAM in architectural design education by contemplating 21st-century skills (a.k.a. survival skills) of architects. Three educational modules together with the andragogic approaches, learning objectives, contents, learning/teaching activities and assessment methods determined with respect to the skill sets defined for 21st-century architects.

summary Print-Cast Concrete investigates concrete 3D printing utilizing robotically fabricated recyclable green sand molds for the fabrication of thin shell architecture. The presented process expedites the production of doubly curved concrete geometries by replacing traditional formwork casting or horizontal corbeling with spatial concrete arching by developing a three-dimensional extrusion path for deposition. Creating robust non-zero Gaussian curvature in concrete, this method increases fabrication speed for mass customized elements eliminating two-part mold casting by combining robotic 3D printing and extrusion casting. Through the casting component of this method, concrete 3D prints have greater resolution along the edge condition resulting in tighter assembly tolerances between multiple aggregated components. Print-Cast Concrete was developed to produce a full-scale architectural installation commissioned for Exhibit Columbus 2019. The concrete 3D printed compression shell spanned 12 meters in length, 5 meters in width, and 3 meters in height and consisted of 110 bespoke panels ranging in weight of 45 kg to 160 kg per panel. Geometrical constraints were determined by the bounding box of compressed sand mold blanks and tooling parameters of both CNC milling and concrete extrusion. Using this construction method, the project was able to be assembled and disassembled within the timeframe of the temporary outdoor exhibit, produce <1% of waste mortar material in fabrication, and utilize 60% less material to construct than cast-in-place construction. Using the sand mold to contain geometric edge conditions, the Print-Cast technique allows for precise aggregation tolerances. To increase the pavilions resistance to shear forces, interlocking nesting geometries are integrated into each edge condition of the panels with .785 radians of the undercut. Over extruding strategically during the printing process casts the undulating surface with accuracy. When nested together, the edge condition informs both the construction logic of the panel’s placement and orientation for the concrete panelized shell.

title A generalized framework for designing topological interlocking configurations

summary A topological interlocking configuration is an arrangement of pieces shaped in such a way that the motion of any piece is blocked by its neighbors. A variety of interlocking configurations have been proposed for convex pieces that are arranged in a planar space. Published algorithms for creating a topological interlocking configuration start from a tessellation of the plane (e.g. squares colored as a checkerboard). For each square S of one color, a plane P through each edge E is considered, tilted by a given angle ? against the tessellated plane. This induces a face F supported by P and limited by other such planes nearby. Note that E is interior to the face. By adjacency, the squares of the other color have similarly delimiting faces. This algorithm generates a topological interlocking configuration of tetrahedra or antiprisms. When checked for correctness (i.e. for no overlap), it rests on the tessellation to be of squares. If the tessellation consists of rectangles, then the algorithm fails. If the tessellation is irregular, then the tilting angle is not uniform for each edge and must be determined, in the worst case, by trial and error. In this article, we propose a method for generating topological interlocking configurations in one single iteration over the tessellation or mesh using a height value and a center point type for each tile as parameters. The required angles are a function of the given height and selected center; therefore, angle choices are not required as an initial input. The configurations generated using our method are compared against the configurations generated using the angle-choice approach. The results show that the proposed method maintains the alignment of the pieces and preserves the co-planarity of the equatorial sections of the pieces. Furthermore, the proposed method opens a path of geometric analysis for topological interlocking configurations based on non-planar tessellations.

summary The timber industry is expanding, including construction wood product applications such as glue-laminated wood products (R. Sikkema et al., 2023). To boost further utilisation of engineered wood products in architecture, further development and optimisation of related tectonic systems is required. Integration of digital design technologies in this endeavour presents opportunities for a more performative and spatially diverse architecture production, even in construction contexts typified by limited means and/or resources. This paper reports on historic precedent case study research that informs an ongoing larger study focussing on novel algorithmic methods for the design and production of lightweight, large-span, catenary glulam roof structures. Given their structural operation in full tension, catenary-based roof structures substantially reduce material needs when compared with those relying on straight beams (Wong and Crolla, 2019). Yet, the manufacture of their non-standard geometries typically requires costly bespoke hardware setups, having resulted in recent projects trending away from the more spatially engaging geometric experiments of the second half of the 20th century. The study hypothesis that the evolutionary design optimisation of this tectonic system has the potential to re-open and expand its practically available design solution space. This paper covers the review of a range of built projects employing catenary glulam roof system, starting from seminal historic precedents like the Festival Hall for the Swiss National Exhibition EXPO 1964 (A. Lozeron, Swiss, 1964) and the Wilkhahn Pavilions (Frei Otto, Germany, 1987), to contemporary examples, including the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre (HCMA Architecture + Design, Canada, 2016). It analysis their structural concept, geometric and spatial complexity, fabrication and assembly protocols, applied construction detailing solutions, and more, with as aim to identify methods, tools, techniques, and construction details that can be taken forward in future research aimed at minimising construction complexity. Findings from this precedent study form the basis for the evolutionary-algorithmic design and construction method development that is part of the larger study. By expanding the tectonic system’s practically applicable architecture design solution space and facilitating architects’ access to a low-tech producible, spatially versatile, lightweight, eco-friendly, wooden roof structure typology, this study contributes to environmentally sustainable building.

summary Augmented Reality (AR) technologies are often perceived as the most impactful method to enhance the communication between the designer and the client during the iterative design process. However, the significance of designing the User Interface (UI) and the User Experience (UX) are often underestimated. To intercede, this research aims to employ new and existing techniques to develop UI's, and comparatively assess "the accuracy and completeness with which specified users can achieve specified goals in particular environments" (Stone, 2005) - a notion this research delineates as 'effectiveness'. Prompted by the work of key scholars, the developed UI's were assessed through the lens of existing UI evaluation techniques, including: Usability Heuristics (Nielsen, 1994) and Visual and Cognitive Heuristics (Zuk and Carpendale, 2006). In partnership with PTW Architects, characteristics such as the rapidity and complexity of interactions, in conjunction with the interface's simplicity and intuitiveness, were extracted from 15 trials underwent by architectural practitioners. The outcomes of this research highlights strategies for the effective development of user interface design for mobile augmented reality applications.

summary Mexico is one of the most urbanized countries in the Global South, and simultaneously faces a rapidly increasing population and a deluge of inadequate housing (URBANET 2019). In 2016, it was estimated that 40 percent of all private residences in Mexico were considered inadequate by UN-Habitat (UN-Habitat 2018). As informal housing constitutes over half of all Mexican housing construction, the most vulnerable groups of the population are particularly impacted. Therefore, there is a serious need to innovate in the area of low-cost building construction for housing in Mexico. This research explores how shape-optimized concrete and earth construction could help provide adequate housing without jeopardizing the country’s commitment to sustainability.

summary This research presents the development of a construction system for a solid expanded cork building envelope. The inspiration for this research is the “Cork House” built in 2019 by Matthew Barnett Howland and Oliver Wilton, who developed a Cork Construction Kit for a monolithic dry-jointed cork structure. The goal of this research is to analyze and develop different varieties of construction methods for a dry-joined cork building by combining and applying traditional masonry techniques. The objective is to generate a material-based design for cork construction elements trough prototyping and using a selection of digital tools such as 3D modeling and 3D printing. Expanded cork is a 100% plant-based material which, if applied correctly, has the capacity to be used as a load bearing, insulating and protective structure all at once. It has almost no environmental impact and is completely compostable. To maintain the material's compostable property, this construction system has to be developed without any kind of binders or mortar. Additionally, this more reduced and simplified form of construction will not only make it possible to build without any specific expertise, but at the same time ensure resources to be reused or composted at the end of building life.

summary This paper presents the results of usability tests of HOPLA (Home Planner), a computer-assisted design system developed to enable customization of house designs. The study aimed to verify whether the proposed method allows non-expert users to configure a house design that meets their expectations in a limited time. The experiments were carried out in two modes of the tool: M mode - modification of a proposed design and S mode - configuration of a design from scratch. The study encompassed two independent experiments carried out on two continents and examined the impact of cultural differences on the expectations of non-expert users towards computer-assisted customization of single-family houses.

summary As the medium of the environment, a building's environment performance-based generative design cannot be separated from intelligent data processing. Sustainable building design should seek an optimized form of environmental performance through a complete set of intelligent induction, autonomous analysis and feedback systems. This paper analyzed the trends in architectural design development in the era of algorithms and data and the status quo of building generative design based on environmental performance, as well as highlighting the importance of physical experiments. Furthermore, a design method for self-generating environmental performance of urban high-rise buildings by applying artificial intelligence neural network algorithms to a customized physical wind tunnel is proposed, which mainly includes a morphology parameter control and environmental data acquisition system, code translation of environmental evaluation rules and architecture of a neural network algorithm model. The design-oriented intelligent prediction can be generated directly from the target environmental requirements to the architectural forms.

summary Nowadays, there is a widespread awareness towards environmental issues. This is already visible in architecture by the increasing number of analysis tools that evaluate different performance criteria. However, the application of these tools is usually restricted to the final design stages, conditioning the implementation of design changes. Performance-Based Design (PBD) is an approach that addresses this limitation. Through PBD, architects integrate analysis tools since early design stages to make informed decisions regarding the performance of their designs. Since the success of PBD highly depends on the number of evaluations that can be performed, these approaches usually end up benefiting from Parametric Models (PMs), which facilitate the generation of a wide range of design variations, by simply changing the values of the parameters. Furthermore, in order to more efficiently achieve a PBD approach, architects can take advantage of the combination between PMs, analysis tools, and optimization processes. In this paper, we explore this combination to optimize an exhibition space regarding its daylight performance and the material cost of the new elements intended for that space.

summary Algorithmic Design is an approach that uses algorithms to generate designs. These algorithms are built using either a Visual Programming Language (VPL) or a Textual Programming Language (TPL). In architecture, there is a clear propensity to the use of VPLs, e.g., Grasshopper or Dynamo, over the use of TPLs, e.g., Python or AutoLisp. In addition to all the user-friendly and interactive features that make VPLs more appealing to architects, most of them already integrate components for textual programming. In contrast, TPLs have not been as successful in incorporating visual features. Given the user-friendliness of VPLs and the relevance of TPLs for large-scale and complex designs, we discuss Visual Input Mechanisms (VIMs) in the context of TPLs. In this paper, we extend previous research in this area by exploring and implementing the most valuable VIMs in a TPL adapted for architectural design.

summary There are severe environmental and ecological issues once we evaluate the architecture industry with LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), such as emission of CO2 caused by necessary high temperature for producing cement and significant amounts of Construction Demolition Waste (CDW) in deteriorated and obsolete buildings. One of the ways to solve these problems is Bio-Material. CELLULOSE and CHITON is the 1st and 2nd abundant substance in nature (Duro-Royo, J.: Aguahoja_ProgrammableWater-based Biocomposites for Digital Design and Fabrication across Scales. MIT, pp. 1–3 (2019)), which means significantly potential for architectural dimension production. Meanwhile, renewability and biodegradability make it more conducive to the current problem of construction pollution. The purpose of this study is to explore Cellulose Based Biomaterial and bring it into architectural scale additive manufacture that engages with performance in the material development, with respect to time of solidification and control of shrinkage, as well as offering mechanical strength. At present, the experiments have proved the possibility of developing a cellulose-chitosan- based composite into 3D-Printing Construction Material (Sanandiya, N.D., Vijay, Y., Dimopoulou, M., Dritsas, S., Fernandez, J.G.: Large-scale additive manufacturing with bioinspired cellulosic materials. Sci. Rep. 8(1), 1–5 (2018)). Moreover, The research shows that the characteristics (Such as waterproof, bending, compression, tensile, transparency) of the composite can be enhanced by different additives (such as xanthan gum, paper fiber, flour), which means it can be customized into various architectural components based on Performance Directional Optimization. This solution has a positive effect on environmental impact reduction and is of great significance in putting the architectural construction industry into a more environment-friendly and smart state.

summary The term ‘height-active’ coined by Heino Engel refers to “structure systems, of which the main task is to collect loads from horizontal planes . . . and to vertically transmit them to the base . . . or high-rises accordingly.” (Engel 2013, 14) The focus of this paper is on the characteristics of height-active wood structures due to their vertical extension and susceptibility to horizontal loading. We shall argue that “more innovation can be expected from the advanced understanding of material characteristics, which can be integrated and taken advantage of in the design process, rather than homogenized, approximated or ignored.” (Correa, Krieg and Meyboom 2019, 74) Conventional construction, insofar, has employed linear and planar wood elements in a hierarchical manner. There is an interest to take advantage of wood’s flexibility to innovate free-form high-rise wood structures. Digitized material application of wood has a wide range of technical and functional adaptation. This field notes essay highlights the importance of three main material characteristics of wood – elasticity, anisotropicity, hygroscopicity – for structural design typology of evolving high-rise endeavors.

summary This paper discussed the exploration of computational design and robotic fabrication with Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing techniques in a robotic metal printing workshop in Digital Futures 2018. Based on the previous research on structural-performance based design and robotic fabrication, this year's workshop mainly focused on the Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing techniques and its possible outcomes. A prototype chair was tested for preparation. And the final target of the workshop was to build a bridge about 11m across the river. Through this metal printed bridge project, several computational optimization methods were applied to fulfill the final design. And Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing techniques with robotic fabrication were carried out during the fabrication process.

summary As a contextual and passive design strategy, solar envelopes play a great role in determining building mass based on desirable sun access during the predefined period. With the rapid evolution of digital tools, the design method of solar envelopes varies in different computational platforms. However, current approaches still lack in covering the detailed complex geometry and relevant information of the surrounding context. This, consequently, affects missing information during contextual analysis and simulation of solar envelopes. This study proposes a subtractive method of solar envelopes by considering the geometrical attribute contained in the point cloud of TLS (terrestrial laser scanner) dataset. Integration of point cloud into the workflow of solar envelopes not only increases the robustness of final geometry of existing solar envelopes but also enhances awareness of architects during contextual analysis due to consideration of surface properties of the existing environment.

summary This paper discusses the potential of emerging digital fabrication techniques to produce material-efficient thin folded concrete structures. Although in the 50s and 60s folded structures provided a common optimal solution for spanning large distances without additional vertical supports, today, the number of these projects decreased significantly due to their complicated formworks and labour-intensive realization. Digital fabrication methods for concrete hold the promise to efficiently produce intricate folded mass-customized shapes with enhanced load-bearing capacity. This paper focuses on a robotic slip-forming process, Smart Dynamic Casting (SDC), to produce various thin-walled folded concrete elements with the same formwork providing smooth surface finish and gradual variations along the height. An empirical research methodology was applied to evaluate the fabrication feasibility of digitally designed thin folded geometries with one-to-one scale prototypes. Despite the discovered design limitations due to fabrication and material constraints, the exploration led to a new promising research direction, termed 'Digital Casting'.

summary This research paper presents a novel method for robotic spraying of glass-fibre reinforced concrete (GFRC) on a permeable reinforcement mesh. In this process, the mesh acts as a functional formwork during the concrete spraying process and as reinforcement once the concrete is cured, with the goal of producing slender reinforced concrete elements efficiently. The proof of concept presented in this paper takes inspiration from "Ferrocement" technique, developed in the 1940s by Pier Luigi Nervi (Greco, 1994) and shows how robotic spraying has the potential of producing such slender and bespoke reinforced concrete elements while also having the potential of reducing manual labour, waste and excess material. The system is coined with the name "Robotic AeroCrete" (or RAC) in reference to the use of an industrial robotic setup and the pneumatic projection of concrete.

summary Cyber-physical systems increasingly inform and alter the perception of atmospheric conditions within interior environments. The Catoptric Surface research project uses computation and robotics to precisely control the location of reflected daylight through a building envelope to form an image-based pattern of light on the building interior's surfaces. In an attempt to amplify or reduce spatial perception, the daylighting reflected onto architectural surfaces within a built environment generates atmospheric effects. The modification of light patterns mapped onto existing or new surfaces enables the perception of space to not rely on form alone. The mapping of a new pattern that is independent of architectural surfaces creates a visual effect of a formless atmosphere and holds the potential to affect the way people interact with the space. People need different amounts and quality of daylight depending on physiological differences due to age or the types of tasks they perform. This research argues for an informed luminous and atmospheric environment that is relative both to the user and more conceptual architectural aspirations of spatial perception controlled by a cyber-physical robotic façade system.

summary The project investigates the possibility of visualizing open source data in a 3D interactive virtual environment. We propose a new tool, 'ViBe'. We programmed 'ViBe' using Unity for its compatibility with HTC VIVE glasses for virtual reality (VR). ViBe offers an abstract visualization of open source data in a 3D interactive environment. The ViBe environment entails three main topics a) inhabitants, b) environmental factors, and c) land-use; acting as representatives of parameters for cities and urban design. Berlin serves as a case study. The data sets used are divided according to Berlin's twelve administrative districts. The user immerses into the virtual environment where they can choose, using the HTC Vive controllers, which district (or Berlin as a whole) they want information for and which topics they want to be visualized, and they can also teleport back and forth between the different districts. The goal of this project is to represent different urban parameters an abstract simulation where we correlate the corresponding data sets. By experiencing the city through visualized data, ViBe aims to provide the user with a clearer perspective onto the city and the relationship between its urban parameters. ViBe is designed for adults and kids, urban planners, politicians and real estate developers alike.
