title Enhanced Building Services - Smart fixture case studies
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.caadria.2019.2.201
source M. Haeusler, M. A. Schnabel, T. Fukuda (eds.), Intelligent & Informed - Proceedings of the 24th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 2, Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand, 15-18 April 2019, pp. 201-210
summary This paper reviews strategies for embedded systems for product development and research prototyping. It focuses on the open-source and open-access technologies that can be applied into wiring smart cities, smart buildings, and smart building components. The paper contextualizes this discussion through two smart product case studies deploying microcontrollers and Raspberry Pi with Node-RED and publish-subscribe messaging services. The value of these case studies lies in identifying approaches for enhancing user-focused building services and in demonstrating new qualitative characteristics these services would provide. The studies presented here exemplify effective research pipelines into embedded technologies and smart building systems.

title Climate-adaptive buildings: Systems and materials
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 17 - no. 2, 166-184
summary This article discusses research case studies that deploy physical computing with kinetic, pneumatic, and smart material technologies as vehicles to address the prospects of these technologies and their future impact on resilient and high- performance buildings. It looks into conceptual aspects of an integrated hybrid system that combines both computation approaches and unique opportunities inherent to these hybrid designs.
