summary The emerging paradigm of Industry 4.0 is rapidly expanding in the AEC sector, where emergent technologies are offering new possibilities. The use of collaborative robots is enabling processes of advanced fabrication, where humans and robots coexist and collaborate towards the co-creation of new building processes. This paper focuses on setting a conceptual framework and a computational workflow for the design and assembly of a novel type of engineered wood structures. The aim is advancing timber construction through complex tectonic configurations, which are informed by logics of robotic assembly, topology and material optimization, and combinatorial design. Starting from the conceptualization of robotic layered manufacturing for timber structures, this work presents the development of a digital twin applied to the voxel-based design of complex timber structures.

summary More and more sectors are entering Industry 4.0 but when we look around in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry, we do not see it happening. We wanted to investigate the reason behind this. Therefore, we conducted research among Hungarian design studios to find out what level of development they are at, and what the obstacles could be for implementing the latest technologies. This paper identifies the main problem we uncovered and discusses a possible solution. We explain what BIM Organisation Development is and why it is fundamental for architect studios who would like to enter Industry 4.0. We introduce the so-called Brick+Data Method, specifying its three essential development steps to get BIM technologies implemented and to make architect studios more efficient. Finally, we share our findings according to the feedback of the companies we worked with using this method.

summary The introduction of digital fabrication technologies in Latin America faces diverse, heterogeneous and decentralized conditions. After several years, there was not a comprehensive perspective on the situation in the region. The goal of this paper is to present a project called "Homo Faber: Digital Fabrication in Latin America" and some of its results. The project comprehends the creation of a database that led to researches and exhibitions about digital fabrication in design, architecture and building construction in Latin America. The questions that guide the investigation try to understand which factors contribute and limit the potential of automation in material processes towards 4.0 industry.

summary The timber industry is expanding, including construction wood product applications such as glue-laminated wood products (R. Sikkema et al., 2023). To boost further utilisation of engineered wood products in architecture, further development and optimisation of related tectonic systems is required. Integration of digital design technologies in this endeavour presents opportunities for a more performative and spatially diverse architecture production, even in construction contexts typified by limited means and/or resources. This paper reports on historic precedent case study research that informs an ongoing larger study focussing on novel algorithmic methods for the design and production of lightweight, large-span, catenary glulam roof structures. Given their structural operation in full tension, catenary-based roof structures substantially reduce material needs when compared with those relying on straight beams (Wong and Crolla, 2019). Yet, the manufacture of their non-standard geometries typically requires costly bespoke hardware setups, having resulted in recent projects trending away from the more spatially engaging geometric experiments of the second half of the 20th century. The study hypothesis that the evolutionary design optimisation of this tectonic system has the potential to re-open and expand its practically available design solution space. This paper covers the review of a range of built projects employing catenary glulam roof system, starting from seminal historic precedents like the Festival Hall for the Swiss National Exhibition EXPO 1964 (A. Lozeron, Swiss, 1964) and the Wilkhahn Pavilions (Frei Otto, Germany, 1987), to contemporary examples, including the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre (HCMA Architecture + Design, Canada, 2016). It analysis their structural concept, geometric and spatial complexity, fabrication and assembly protocols, applied construction detailing solutions, and more, with as aim to identify methods, tools, techniques, and construction details that can be taken forward in future research aimed at minimising construction complexity. Findings from this precedent study form the basis for the evolutionary-algorithmic design and construction method development that is part of the larger study. By expanding the tectonic system’s practically applicable architecture design solution space and facilitating architects’ access to a low-tech producible, spatially versatile, lightweight, eco-friendly, wooden roof structure typology, this study contributes to environmentally sustainable building.

summary The purpose of this paper is to present a work in progress pertaining to drone pose estimation and flight calibration. This paper intends to underline the increasing importance of determining alternative path planning instruments through accurate localization for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with the purpose of achieving complex flight operations for the emerging applications of autonomous robotics in surveying, design, fabrication, and on-site operations. This research is based on the implementation of novel technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR), Robot Operating System (ROS), and computational approaches to define a drone calibration methodology, leveraging existing methods for drone path planning. Drones are equipped with measurement systems to provide geo-location and time information such as onboard Global Positioning System (GPS) sensors, and Inertial Measurement Units (IMU). As stated in previous research, to increase navigation capabilities, measurements and data processing algorithms have a critical role (Daponte et al. 2015). The outcome of this work in progress showcases valuable results in calculating and assessing accurate positioning for UAVs, and developing data exchanges in transmission, reception, and tracking.

summary By investigating methods for using computation and digital manufacturing technologies to integrate material properties with architectural design tools, the research in this paper aims at revealing new potentials for the use of wood in architecture. Through an explorative approach, material particularities and fabrication methods are explored and combined into new workflows and architectural expressions. The research looks into different properties and capacities of wood, but the main part of the experimentation revolves around crooked oak logs. Due to their irregularities, these logs are normally discarded. However, through the methods suggested in this research, they are instead matched with unique processing informed by their divergence. The research presents a workflow for handling the discrete shapes of sawlogs in a system that both involve the collecting of material, scanning/digitization, handling of a stockpile, computer analysis, design, and robotic manufacturing. The workflow includes multiple custom-made solutions for handling the complex and different shapes and data of wood logs in a highly digitized machining and fabrication environment. The suggested method is established through investigations of wood as a natural material, studies of the production lines in the current wood industry, and experimentation in our in-house laboratory facilities. This up-cycling of discarded wood supply establishes a non-standard workflow that utilizes non-standard material stock and leads to a critical articulation of today’s linear material economy. The research thereby gives an example of how the natural forms and properties of sawlogs can be directly used to generate new structures and spatial conditions.

summary Browser-based platforms (Google Docs or Minecraft) have instigated the value of collaborative environments. Browser-based modelling point out a future for the AEC industry. Yet at present no literature review nor a taxonomy of browser-based modelling platforms exist. A key outcome of a unique taxonomy framework of existing BMA characteristics reveals that current BMAs do not take full advantage of the web's unique capabilities such as centralising data across multiple tools within an 'ecosystem'. Consequently, this taxonomy has productively guided the development of Redback BIM, a proof-of-concept BMA that enables the coordination of BIM data in a collaborative online context. Redback BIM further demonstrates how, through establishing a universal data-type, a diverse range of scripts can be consolidated together in an online platform to enable greater accessibility for a range of AEC professionals towards improved project communication and efficiency.

summary Innovation in parametric design and robotic fabrication is in reciprocal relationship with the investigation of new structural types that facilitated by this technology. The stressed skin structure has historically been used to create lightweight curved structures, mainly in engineering applications such as naval vessels, aircraft, and space shuttles. Stressed skin structures were first referred to by Fairbairn in 1849. In England, the first use of the structure was in the Mosquito night bomber of World War II. In the United States, stressed skin structures were used at the same time, when the Wright Patterson Air Force Base designed and fabricated the Vultee BT-15 fuselage using fiberglass-reinforced polyester as the face material and both glass-fabric honeycomb and balsa wood core. With the renewed interest in wood as a structural building material, due to its sustainable characteristics, new potentials for the use of stressed skin structures made from wood on building scales are emerging. The authors present a material informed system that is characterized by its adaptability to freeform curvature on exterior surfaces. A stressed skin system can employ thinner materials that can be bent in their elastic bending range and then fixed into place, leading to the ability to be architecturally malleable, structurally highly efficient, as well as easily buildable. The interstitial space can also be used for services. Advanced digital fabrication and robotic manufacturing methods further enhance this capability by enabling precisely fabricated tolerances and embedded assembly instructions; these are essential to fabricate complex, multi-component forms. Through a prototypical installation, the authors demonstrate and discuss the technology of the stressed skin structure in wood considering current digital design and fabrication technologies.

summary Augmented reality (AR) is an emerging landscape simulation technology being used in the construction industry to reduce losses in subsequent projects by reviewing the landscape before a building is completed. However, since AR projects virtual models into the real world through portable devices, the designer's review perspective and the number of people able to participate in the review process is limited. Therefore, a system that combines AR and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) development with telecommunications technology was designed and prototyped to use the UAV camera as the source of the video stream of AR. This frees the designer's review perspective through ground control and allows remote communication with off-site people, thus allowing more users site access and improving system usability. This paper details the construction of the integrated system, including the integrating of different development languages, environments, and mutual calls used, the AR and UAV development modules, the construction process of the telecommunication protocol, and mutual data interoperability.

summary Platforms that integrate developments from multiple disciplines are becoming increasingly relevant as the complexity of different technologies increases day by day. In this context, this paper describes an integrative approach for the development of architectural projects. It portrays the benefits of applying such an approach by describing its implementation throughout the development and execution of a building demonstrator. Through increasing the agility and extending the scope of existing computational tools, multiple collaborators were empowered to generate innovative solutions across the different phases of the project´s cycle. For this purpose, novel solutions for planar segmented wood shells are showcased at different levels. First, it is demonstrated how the application of a sophisticated hollow-cassette building system allowed the optimization of material use, production time, and mounting logistics due to the modulation of the parameters of each construction element. Second, the paper discusses how the articulation of that complexity was crucial when negotiating between multiple professions, interacting with different contractors, and complying with corresponding norms. Finally, the innovative architectural features of the resulting building are described, and the accomplishments are benchmarked through comparison with typological predecessor.

summary The context of digital fabrication allows architects to reinvestigate material, process and the design decisions they entail to explore novel expression in architecture. This demands a new approach to design thinking, as well as the relevant tools to couple the form of artefacts with the process in which they are made. This paper presents a customised computational design tool developed for exploring the novel design space of Concrete Extrusion 3D Printing (CE3DP), enabling a reinterpretation of the concrete column building typology. This tool allows the designer to access generative engines such as trigonometric functions and mesh subdivision through an intuitive graphical user interface. Balancing process efficiency as understood by our industry with a strong design focus, we aim to articulate the unique architectural qualities inherent to CE3DP, energising much needed innovation in concrete technology.

summary Architectural surfaces constantly emit radiant heat fluxes to their surroundings, a phenomenon that is wholly dependent on their geometry and material properties. Therefore, the capacity of 3D scanning techniques to capture the geometry of building surfaces should be extended to sense and capture the surfaces’ thermal behavior in real time. We present an innovative sensor, SMART (Spherical-Motion Average Radiant Temperature Sensor), which captures the thermal characteristics of the built environment by coupling laser geometry scanning with infrared surface temperature detection. Its novelty lies in the combination of the two sensor technologies into an analytical device for radiant temperature mapping. With a sensor-based dynamic thermal-surface model, it is possible to achieve representation and control over one of the major factors affecting human comfort. The results for a case-study of a 3D thermal scan conducted in the recently completed Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University are compared with simulation results based on a detailed BIM model of the same space.

summary By introducing rapid reproduction, algorithms, and complex formal configurations, the digital era of architecture began a revolution. Architects incorporated the computational capacity of the computer into the design process both as a tool and as a critical component of the theories and practice of architecture as a whole. As we move into what has been coined “the second digital turn,” a period in which digital integration is considered ubiquitous, how can we consider, prepare, and propel towards the next technological innovation to significantly inform design thinking, representation, and manifestation? What tools are available to investigate this speculative design future and how can they be implemented? If the integration of technology in architecture is now a given, perhaps the next digital design era is not just digital but virtual. As new technologies emerge the potential for integrating the virtual design world with our physical senses affords novel possibilities for interactive design, simulation, analysis and construction. Hybrid reality technologies including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), embody the potential to supersede conventional representation methodologies such as drawing, rendering, physical modeling, and animation. As they become increasingly pervasive, they will transform how we communicate ideas and data as spatial concepts. Further, they will reform the construct of the built environment when applied to both materiality and fabrication. This paper will describe the incorporation of VR as a tool in various classroom and laboratory settings, recognize the educational outcomes of this incorporation, and identify the potential relationship of these technologies to future academic exploration and application to practice.

summary Natural load bearing structures are characterized by aspects of specialized morphology, lightweight, adaptability, and a regenerative life cycle. PolyBrick 2.0 aims to learn from and apply these characteristics in the pursuit of revitalizing ceramic load bearing structures. For this, algorithmic design processes are employed, whose physical manifestations are realized through available clay/porcelain additive manufacturing technologies (AMTs). By integrating specialized expertise across disciplines of architecture, engineering, and material science, our team proposes an algorithmic toolset to generate PolyBrick geometries that can be applied to various architectural typologies. Additionally, comparative frameworks for digital and physical performance analyses are outlined. Responding to increasing urgencies of material efficiency and environmental sensibility, this project strives to provide for designers a toolset for environmentally responsive, case-specific design, characterized by the embedded control qualities derived from the bone and its adaptability to specific loading conditions. Various approaches to brick tessellation and assembly are proposed and architectural possibilities are presented. As an outcome of this research, PolyBrick 2.0 is effectively established as a Grasshopper plug-in, “PolyBrick” to be further explored by designers.

summary With fast development of new technologies built environment transitioned from a silent background of activities performed by users to another participant of those activities. Agency of interactive architecture is based on interpretation of input data, like users’ actions, their response to the spatial agency, data from environment or other actors, and changing its performance accordingly. Architectural components, environmental conditions and people are all treated as agents and closely correspond to Actor-Network Theory (ANT). This theory generally aims to reveal the complexities of socio-technological world. ANT incorporates a principle of generalized symmetry, it means that human and nonhuman (artifacts, organization structures, etc.) actors are incorporated into the same conceptual framework and assigned equal level of agency. By analysis of the agency of Interactive Architecture through ANT the paper provides insight on social role of this new emerging type of space and its influence on other participants on socio-technological relationship.

In this article, we present a systematic analysis of the literature published between 2009 and 2019 on the utilization of generative systems in the design practices of the architecture, engineering and construction industry. The present research studies present trends, collaborations and applications of generative systems in the architecture, engineering and construction industry in order to identify existing shortcomings and potential advancements that balance the need for theory development and practical application. It provides insightful observations that are translated into meaningful recommendations for future research necessary to progress the incorporation of generative systems into the design practices of the architecture, engineering and construction industry.

summary This paper presents data visualizations of an intelligent environment that were designed to serve the needs of two stakeholder groups: visitors wanting to understand how that environment operates, and developers interested in optimizing it. The visualizations presented here were designed for [Amatria], a sentient sculpture built by the Living Architecture Systems Group (LASG) at Indiana University Bloomington, IN, USA, in the spring of 2018. They are the result of an extended collaboration between LASG and the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center (CNS) at Indiana University. We introduce [Amatria], review related work on the visualization of smart environments and sentient architectures, and explain how the Data Visualization Literacy Framework (DVL-FW) can be used to develop visualizations of intelligent interactive systems (IIS) for these two stakeholder groups.

summary The usability of virtual reality (VR) controller interfaces are often complex and difficult for first time users. Most controllers provide minimal feedback which relegates the potential for heightened interaction and feedback within virtual experiences. This research explores how haptic technology systems partnered with VR can deliver immersive interactions between user and virtual environment (VE). This research involves the development of a haptic glove interface prototype that incorporates a force feedback and vibrotactile feedback system. It focuses on determining a workflow that communicates in real-time user interaction and environmental feedback using Unreal Engine and the produced haptic glove system. Testing and calibrating the prototype feedback system provided a baseline for developers to rationalise and improve accuracy of current real-time virtual feedback systems. The evaluation of this research in industry unfolds new technical knowledge for implementing a wider range of haptic technologies within VR. This further development would involve reviewing the usability and interaction standards for VR users in the design process.

summary During the last decade, mass customization in developing countries has been rising. The combination of conventional methods and materials with computer numeric control technologies offers a possibility of merging established craftsmanship to the production of personalized components with mass production efficiency. This article aims to present the development of a facade component prototype as a means to prospect possibilities for mixing parametric design and digital fabrication to casting, especially in developing countries like Brazil. This is an applied research with an exploratory and constructive approach, which was a result of a graduate class structured on a research by design basis. The conceptual development and prototyping of the artifact followed iterative cycles, considering its performance, fabrication methods and feasibility. The selection of materials that are commonly used in Brazilian architecture, like concrete, facilitates the component adoption as as a facade solution. The main conclusion emphasizes the need of involvement between academia and industry for the development of innovative products and processes, and highlights different levels of mass customization to include a range of manufacturing agents, from major industries to local craftspeople.

summary Tradition wood tectonics, like interlocking joints, have regained focus against the background of digital design and fabrication technologies. While research on interlocking joints is quite focused on joint geometries, especially for timber plates, there has been less attention on the design and mass customization of interlocking joints for linear timber elements. In this context, this research addresses the challenges of mass customization of interlocking joints for linear elements through the design and realization of a 9-meterhigh timber structure with fully interlocking joints, without the use of any nails or glue. A customized code generation program was developed for the fabrication process, allowing the rapid programming and fabrication for all the 840 elements and 2592 notches. The project demonstrates how innovative structures are allowed through the synthesis of joint geometry, assembly process, and cutting-edge fabrication technology.
