summary It has been proposed that, after the internet age, we are now entering a new era of the '/Augmented Age/' (King, 2016). Physician Michio Kaku imagined the future of architects will be relying heavily on Augmented Reality technology (Kaku, 2015). Augmented reality technology is not a new technology and has been evolving rapidly. In the last three years, the technology has been applied in mainstream consumer devices (Coppens, 2017). This opened up possibilities in every aspect of our daily lives and it is expected that this will have a great impact on every field of consumer's technology in near future, including design and fabrication. What is the future of design and making? What kind of new digital fabrication paradigm will emerge from inevitable technological development? What kind of impact will this have on the built environment and industry? FlowMorph is a research project developed in the Bartlett School of Architecture, B-Pro AD with the collaboration of the authors and students as a 12 month MArch programme, we developed a unique design project trying to answer these questions which will be introduced in this paper.

summary Architecture does not exist in a vacuum. Its cultural, conceptual, and aesthetic agendas are constantly influenced by other visual and artistic disciplines ranging from film, photography, painting and sculpture to fashion, graphic and industrial design. The formal qualities of the cultural zeitgeist are perpetually influencing contemporary architectural aesthetics. In this paper, we aim to introduce a radical yet methodical approach toward regulating the relationship between human agency and computational form-making by using Machine Learning (ML) as a conceptual design tool for interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement. Through the use of a highly calibrated and customized ML systems that can classify and iterate stylistic approaches that exist outside the disciplinary boundaries of architecture, the technique allows for machine intelligence to design, coordinate, randomize, and iterate external formal and aesthetic qualities as they relate to pattern, color, proportion, hierarchy, and formal language. The human engagement in this design process is limited to the initial curation of input data in the form of image repositories of non-architectural disciplines that the Machine Learning system can extrapolate from, and consequently in regulating and choosing from the iterations of images the Artificial Neural Networks are capable of producing. In this process the architect becomes a curator that samples and streamlines external cultural influences while regulating their significance and weight in the final design. By questioning the notion of human agency in the design process and providing creative license to Artificial Intelligence in the conceptual design phase, we aim to develop a novel approach toward human-machine collaboration that rejects traditional notions of disciplinary autonomy and streamlines the influence of external aesthetic disciplines on contemporary architectural production.

summary This paper examines a novel, integrated and collaborative approach to design and fabrication, enabled through Mixed Reality. In a bespoke fabrication process, the design is controlled and altered by users in holographic space, through a custom, multi-modal interface. Users input is live-streamed and channeled to 3D modelling environment,on-demand robotic fabrication and AR-guided assembly. The Holographic Interface is aimed at promoting man-machine collaboration. A bespoke pipeline translates hand gestures and audio into CAD and numeric fabrication. This enables non-professional participants engage with a plethora of novel technology. The feasibility of Mixed Reality for architectural workflow was tested through an interactive installation for the makeCity Berlin 2018 festival. Participants experienced with on-demand design, fabrication an AR-guided assembly. summary In this paper, we are aiming to present a methodology for generation, manipulation and form finding of structural typologies using variational autoencoders, a machine learning model based on neural networks. We are giving a detailed description of the neural network architecture used as well as the data representation based on the concept of a 3D-canvas with voxelized wireframes. In this 3D-canvas, the input geometry of the building typologies is represented through their connectivity map and subsequently augmented to increase the size of the training set. Our variational autoencoder model then learns a continuous latent distribution of the input data from which we can sample to generate new geometry instances, essentially hybrids of the initial input geometries. Finally, we present the results of these computational experiments and lay out the conclusions as well as outlook for future research in this field.

summary Over the past decade, we have witnessed rapid advancements on both practical and theoretical levels in regard to automated construction as a consequence of increasing sophistication of digital fabrication technologies such as robotics, 3D printing, etc. However, digital fabrication technology is often very limited when it comes to dealing with delicate and complex crafting processes. Although digital fabrication processes have become widely accessible and utilized across industries in recent times, there are still a number of fabrication techniques—which heavily rely on human labour—due to the complex nature of procedures and delicacy of materials. With this in mind, we need to ask ourselves if full automation is truly an ultimate goal, or if we need to (re)consider the role of humans in the architectural construction chain, as automation becomes more prevalent. We propose rethinking the role which human, machine, and computer have in construction— occupying the territory between purely automated, exclusively robotically-driven fabrication and highly crafted processes requiring human labour. This is to propose an alternative to reducing construction to fully automated assembly of simplified/discretized building parts, by appreciating physical properties of materials and nature of crafting processes. The research proposes a design-to-construction workflow pursued and enabled by augmented humans using AR devices. As a result, proposed workflows are tested on three prototypical inhabitable structure, aiming to be applicable to other projects in the near future, and to bridge the gap between purely automated construction processes on one hand, and craft-based, material-driven but labour-intensive processes on the other.

summary Architectural modelling is radically evolving with time. The introduction of VR into gaming and education has also encouraged architecture to integrate VR into its course of the design process. However, the current integration of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) components is mostly limited to enhancing visualisation, especially towards the corresponding design tasks. This opportunity lead to an increase in attempts to bring the modelling process into the immersive environment. This paper aims to challenge the current design capabilities within the immersive environment and introduce a new interaction method between the human and the virtual reality. The research in human-computer interaction (HCI) has been ongoing for years till present day to observe how humans interact with computers and design technologies. The appearance of the smartphone has extended this HCI research towards hand-carried devices. With VR, although the hardware is still considered 'computer', the interaction is very much different. Since the human is immersed in the virtual environment, the interaction is already beyond the traditional keyboard and mouse. This paper responds to the conference theme by capitalising the power of VR technology to bring new methods of HVRI to the architecture design process.

For some, standardization emerged as an enemy of arts and crafts, while, for others, it was an opportunity to embrace new design agendas, where construction economy and quality could be controlled in novel ways. More recently, electronics and information technology fostered the 3rd Revolution with the production automation. In architecture, the progressive use of digital design, analysis and fabrication processes started to replace the traditional means of analogical representation. This opened the door for the exploration of a higher degree of design freedom, complexity and customization. The rise of the Internet also changed the way architects communicated and promoted the emergence of global architectural practices in the planet. Today, in the beginning of the 21th century, we are in a moment of profound and accelerated changes in the way we perceive and interact with(in) the world, which many authors, like Klaus Schwab, do not hesitate to call as the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Extraordinary advancements in areas like mobile communication, artificial intelligence, big data, cloud computing, blockchain, nanotechnology, biotechnology, facial recognition, robotics or additive manufacturing are fusing the physical, biological and digital systems of production. summary In contemporary data-driven society, forces of capital increasingly seek risk-averse decision making through data and digital calculation, aligned to this the discourse around design intelligence in architecture has begun to embrace the role of data and the technical non-human as much as the human. In parallel, the cultural understanding of data, in technologically mediated societies, has become tied to the digital representation of information experienced in everyday life, which in turn influences human practices. A problem exists in the dominance of scientific thought around data in architecture that exerts disciplinary bias towards quantity rather than quality. In contemporary digital practice, data is assumed to offer an objective characterisation of the world and have faithful representation through the mechanisms of the computer. From this shift, a macro question exists concerning the influence of data's conceptualisation on the physical products of architecture. To contribute to this overall question this paper considers the register of data in early modernism identified as a moment when scientific abstraction and the mapping capacity of the machine combine to afford recognisable data practices and infrastructures.

summary Artificial Neural Networks (NN) have become ubiquitous across disciplines due to their high performance in modeling the real world to execute complex tasks in the wild. This paper presents a computational design approach that uses the internal representations of deep vision neural networks to generate and transfer stylistic form edits to both 2D floor plans and building sections. The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate and interrogate a design technique based on deep learning. The discussion includes aspects of machine learning, 2D to 2D style transfers, and generative adversarial processes. The paper examines the meaning of agency in a world where decision making processes are defined by human/machine collaborations (Figure 1), and their relationship to aspects of a Posthuman design ecology. Taking cues from the language used by experts in AI, such as Hallucinations, Dreaming, Style Transfer, and Vision, the paper strives to clarify the position and role of Artificial Intelligence in the discipline of Architecture.

summary Within the context of continuous technology transformations, the way scientists and designers process data is changing dramatically from simplification and explicit defined rules to searching and retrieving. Ideally, such a trending method can eliminate issues including deviation and ambiguity with the help of hypothetically unlimited computational power. To process data in this manner, artificial intelligence is necessary and needs to be integrated into the design process. An experiment of a design process that consists of a generative model, a data library, and a machine learning system (GAN) is introduced to demonstrate its effectiveness. The methodology is further evaluated by comparing its output with its input targets, which proves the possibility of employing machine learning systems to aggressively process data and automate the design process. Further improvement of such methodology, including judging criteria and possible applications, and the sensibility of the machine is also discussed at the end.

summary Modern communication between built environment professionals are governed by the effective exchange of digital models, blueprints and technical drawings. However, the increasing quantity of such digital files, in conjunction with inconsistent filing systems, increases the potential for human-error upon their look-up and retrieval. Further, current methods are manual, thus slow and resource intensive. Evidently, the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) industry lacks an automated classification system capable of systematically identifying and categorising different drawings. To intercede, we aim to investigate artificially intelligent solutions capable of automatically identifying and retrieving a wide set of AEC files from a company's resource library. We present a convolutional neural network (CNN) model capable of processing large sets of technical drawings - such as sections, plans and elevations - and recognise their individual patterns and features, ultimately minimising laboriousness.

summary We introduce Human-Building Collaboration (HBC), a pedagogical framework for the design of next-generation smart buildings in architecture. Using the framework's philosophy, model, and tools we show designers how to enhance smart building performance by increasing and diversifying the ways humans have to share their intelligence with that of the building. We apply this framework through design exercises and present the result of two projects: (1) a tangible wall interface for lighting co-optimization and (2) a shape display facade interface for rainwater purification and reuse. Preliminary findings demonstrate that the framework helped designers proposing new means for humans to collaborate with smart buildings.

summary Collaborative Robots, or Cobots, bring new possibilities for human-machine interaction within the fabrication process, allowing each actor to contribute with their specific capabilities. However creative interaction brings unexpected changes, obstacles, complexities and non-linearities which are encountered in real time and cannot be predicted in advance. This paper presents an experimental methodology for robotic path planning using Machine Learning. The focus of this methodology is obstacle avoidance. A neural network is deployed, providing a relationship between the robot's pose and its surroundings, thus allowing for motion planning and obstacle avoidance, directly integrated within the design environment. The method is demonstrated through a series of case-studies. The method combines haptic teaching with machine learning to create a task specific dataset, giving the robot the ability to adapt to obstacles without being explicitly programmed at every instruction. This opens the door to shifting to robotic applications for construction in unstructured environments, where adapting to the singularities of the workspace, its occupants and activities presents an important computational hurdle today.

summary The present paper is focused on exploring a new paradigm in architectural design process that should raise the bar for a mutual collaboration between humans and digital assistants, able to face challenging problems of XXI century. Such a collaboration will aid design process freeing designer from middle level reasoning tasks, so they could focus on exploring - on the fly - design alternatives at a higher abstraction layer of knowledge. Such an assistant should explore and instantiate as much as possible knowledge structures and their inferences thanks to an extensive use of defaults, demons and agents, combined with its power and ubiquity so that they will be able to mimic behaviour of architectural design human experts. It aims other than to deal with data (1st layer) and simple reasoning tools (2nd layer) to automate design exploring consequences and side effects of design decisions and comparing goals (3rd layer). This assistant will speed up the evaluation of fresh design solutions, will suggest solutions by means of generative systems and will be able of a digital creativity.

summary Advanced manufacturing and robotic fabrication for the housing construction industry is mainly focused on the use of industrial robots in the pre-fabrication stage. Yet to be fully developed is the use on-site of collaborative robots, able to work cooperatively with humans in a range of construction trades. Our study focuses on the trade of carpentry in small-to-medium size enterprises in the Australian construction industry, seeking to understand and identify opportunities in the current workflows of carpenters for the role of collaborative robots. Prior to presenting solutions for this problem, we first developed a novel methodology for the capture and analysis of the body movements of carpenters, resulting in a suite of visual resources to aid us in thinking through where, what, and how a collaborative robot could participate in the carpentry task. We report on the challenges involved, and outline how the results of applying this methodology will inform the next stage of our research.
