summary Recently, The South Korean national government and local governments in Korea are pursuing national R & D tasks that can be used in the design stage to expand the BIM technology to the public environment of the future city, such as the construction of the IT integrated architecture design environment and the convenient construction administrative system environment. Among these R & D researches, various studies are continuing to provide more convenient and accurate architectural services at the licensing stage in order to promote the introduction and practical use of BIM in the Korean construction industry. Typical examples are BIM-based building design quality evaluation and building performance review technology development. Therefore, the goal of this study is to introduce the case of developing the performance review interface according to the regulation and required performance criterion of BIM model using KBIMS and analyze the possibility of evaluating building design quality by applying this to a practical project.

summary There has been a recent increase in the exploration of mereological systems, speculating on how digital design, assembly and reconfiguration of digital materials (Gershenfeld, 2015) enables digitally informed physical worlds that change over time. Besides opportunities for construction and design automation, there is a potential to reimagine how multiple stakeholders can participate in the computational decision-making process, using the benefits of the mass customization of logistics (Retsin, 2019). This paper presents a research-by-design project that applies a digital and discrete material system to high-rise housing in Hong Kong. The project has developed an integrated approach to design, construction, and inhabitation, using a system of discrete parts which can be assembled in various apartment configurations, to incorporate varying occupants requirements and facilitate negotiations and changes over time.

summary This paper describes a framework for discrete computational design and fabrication in the context of automation. Whereas digital design and fabrication are technical notions, automation immediately has societal and political repercussions. Automation relates to industrialization and mechanisation—allowing to historically reconnect the digital while bypassing the post-modern, deconstructivist, or parametric decades. Using a series of built prototypes making use of timber, this paper will describe how the combined technologies of automation and discreteness enable both technical efficiencies and new architectural interest. Both projects are based on timber sheet materials, cut and folded into larger elements that are then assembled into functional structures. Both projects are also fragments of larger housing blocks. Discrete building blocks are presented from a technical perspective as occupying a space in between programmable matter and modular prefabrication. Timber is identified as an ideal material for automated discrete construction. From an architectural perspective, the paper discusses the implications of an architecture based on parts that remain autonomous from the whole.

summary This paper is part of an ongoing research project on flexible molds for use in concrete fabrication. It continues and advances the concept of adjustable molds by creating a flexible system to produce a variety of concrete grid-joints. This reusable and adaptive mold streamlines the process of fabricating inherently diverse nodal joints without the need for cost-intensive mass-customization methods. The paper also proposes a novel way to cope with some of the significant drawbacks of similar mold techniques that have been explored and found wanting in similar projects. The technique used for the mold in the current research is inspired by a flexible mechanism that has been implemented in other manufacturing contexts, such as expansion joints and bendable straws. The outcomes of the project are a platform called “Flexi-node” and relevant software components that allow users to computationally design and fabricate a great variety of concrete joints for grid structures, using just one mold, with minimum material waste and no distortion from hydrostatic pressure.

title The Evolution of CAADRIA Conferences - A Bibliometric Approach

summary This paper presents an analysis of the output, impact, use and content of 1,860 papers that were published in the CAADRIA conference proceedings over the last 20+ years (from 1996 to 2019). The applied methodology is a blend of bibliometrics, webometrics and clustering with text mining. The bibliometric analysis leads to quantitative and qualitative results on three levels: (1) author, (2) article and (3) association. The most productive authors authored over 50 papers, and the top 20% authors have over 80 % of all citations generated by CAADRIA proceedings. The overall impact of CAADRIA may be characterised by nearly 2,000 known citations and by the h-index that is 17. The webometrics based on CumInCAD.org reveals that the CAADRIA papers served over 200 k users, which is a considerable visibility for scientific CAAD output. The keywords most frequently used by authors were digital fabrication, BIM and parametric, generative, computational design. Notably, 90% of the papers' descriptors are 2-grams. This study may be useful to researchers, educators and publishers interested in CAAD.

summary This action research project develops a novel conceptual method for non-standardised concrete construction component fabrication and tests its validity through a speculative design project. The paper questions the practical, procedural and economic drivers behind the design and construction of geometrically complex concrete architecture. It proposes an alternative, simple and economical fabrication method for doubly curved concrete centred on the robotic manufacturing of casting moulds through 5-axis hotwire foam cutting for the making of doubly-curved fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) panels. These panels are used as light-weight sacrificial formwork for in-situ concrete casting. The methodology's opportunity space is tested, evaluated and discussed through a conceptual architectural design project proposal that operates as demonstrator. The paper concludes by addressing the advantages of a design-and-build architecture delivery setup, the potential from using computational technology to adapt conventional design and construction procedures and the expanded role within the design and construction process this gives to architects.

summary With the increasing applications of computational methods in the field of design optimization, intelligent metaheuristic algorithms are playing a more important role in building performance optimization. To enable the integration of optimization algorithms with Building Information Modeling (BIM), this research implemented the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm on Revit + Dynamo, which is a parametric BIM platform. A MultiObjective PSO (MOPSO) Solver has been developed in Dynamo using MATLAB and C# programming languages. The methodology of the research and the validation studies are presented in the paper. The validation studies prove the effectiveness of the MOPSO Solver for both standard optimization test functions and an optimization example of a simplified building design.

title A shared realities workflow for interactive design using virtual reality and three-dimensional depth sensing

summary This article presents the ongoing development and testing of a “shared realities” computational workflow to support iterative user-centered design with an interactive system. The broader aim is to address the challenges associated with observing and recording user interactions within the context of use for improving the performance of an interactive system. A museum installation is used as an initial test bed to validate the following hypothesis: by integrating three- dimensional depth sensing and virtual reality for interaction design and user behavior observations, the shared realities workflow provides an iterative feedback loop that allows for remote observations and recordings for faster and effective decision-making. The methods presented focus on the software development for gestural interaction and user point cloud observations, as well as the integration of virtual reality tools for iterative design of the interface and system performance assessment. Experimental testing demonstrates viability of the shared realities workflow for observing and recording user interaction behaviors and evaluating system performance. Contributions to computational design, technical challenges, and ethical considerations are discussed, as well as directions for future work.

The knowledge contribution in this paper focuses on developing a novel spatial decision support framework focusing on the workflows and tool-chains that span across different teams within an organisation, with varying skill sets and objectives. In the proposed framework, the core decision-making process uses set decision parameters that are combined using a weighted decision tree. The framework is evaluated by developing and testing tool-chains for a real-world land suitability case study. The tool-chain was implemented on top of a GIS platform.

summary Brickwork is the oldest construction method still in use. Digital technologies, in turn, enabled new methods of representation and automation for bricklaying. While automation explored different approaches, representation was limited to declarative methods, as parametric filling algorithms. Alternatively, this work proposes a framework for automated brickwork using a machine learning model based on image-to-image translation (Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks). The framework consists of creating a dataset, training a model for each bond, and converting the output images into vectorial data for robotic assembly. Criteria such as: reaching wall boundary accuracy, avoidance of unsupported bricks, and brick's position accuracy were individually evaluated for each bond. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework fulfils boundary filling and respects overall bonding structural rules. Size accuracy demonstrated inferior performance for the scale tested. The association of this method with 'self-calibrating' robots could overcome this problem and be easily implemented for on-site.

The way machines will understand architecture may be very different from the reading of humans. Since the Renaissance, the architectural discipline has defined itself as a conversation between different stakeholders, the designer, but also the clients and the artisans in charge of the realization of projects. How can this conversation be adapted to the rise of intelligent machines? Such a question is not only a matter of design effectiveness. It is inseparable from expressive and artistic issues. Just like the fascination of modernist architecture for industrialization was intimately linked to the quest for a new poetics of the discipline, our contemporary interest for artificial intelligence has to do with questions regarding the creative core of the architectural discipline.

summary This article will describe the recent steps in the development of a computational generative system based on the selection and combination of ordinary architectural elements. Built as a Grasshopper definition, the system was conceived to generate designs of architectural façades and to produce models, physical and digital, for didactic use. More specifically, The paper will address the conception of controlling devices, that is, the parts of the computational system that govern design variations. This process involved two complementary actions: first, the definition of a clear organizational logic, where elements can be represented as a data structure that encompasses classes, sub-classes, sets, libraries and attributes; secondly, the establishment of means to operate the variations through the use of filters and heuristics based on visual patterns, allowing varying degrees of automation and user control. It will be argued that such organizational model paves the way to increase the number of design possibilities in the future and to and provide means to integrate of architectural criteria into the generation process. This research has received the support of CNPq.

summary The emergence of computational design and fabrication tools has escalated the potentials of architectural ornamentation to become innovative, beautiful, and highly sustainable. Historically, ornament has been known to express character and reveal relationships between materiality, technological advances, and societal evolution. But ornament rapidly declined in the late 1800s in large part due to mechanization and modernist ideals of uniform, unadorned façade components. However, ornamentation in architecture has recently reappeared—a development that can be linked closely to advancements in computational design and digital fabrication. While these advancements offer the ability to create expressive architecture, their potential contribution to the improvement of sustainable architecture has largely been overlooked (Augusti-Juan and Habert 2017). This paper provides a brief revisitation to the history of ornament and investigates the impact of computation and automation on the production of contemporary ornament. The paper also attempts to catalog examples of how designers have used computational technologies to address the growing criticality of environmental concerns. Moreover, the paper presents the Waste Ornament project, a research platform that critically examines how we can leverage technology to augment the visual and sustainable performance of facade ornamentation to reduce energy use in buildings. Three sub-projects are identified as territories for further research into sustainable ornamentation, ranging from material sourcing, to high-performance buildings, to the development of a systematic upcycling process that transforms old facades into new ones. While the examples are not exhaustive, they attempt to interlace the general ideas of waste and ornament by addressing particular issues that converge at building envelopes.

summary Over the past decade, we have witnessed rapid advancements on both practical and theoretical levels in regard to automated construction as a consequence of increasing sophistication of digital fabrication technologies such as robotics, 3D printing, etc. However, digital fabrication technology is often very limited when it comes to dealing with delicate and complex crafting processes. Although digital fabrication processes have become widely accessible and utilized across industries in recent times, there are still a number of fabrication techniques—which heavily rely on human labour—due to the complex nature of procedures and delicacy of materials. With this in mind, we need to ask ourselves if full automation is truly an ultimate goal, or if we need to (re)consider the role of humans in the architectural construction chain, as automation becomes more prevalent. We propose rethinking the role which human, machine, and computer have in construction— occupying the territory between purely automated, exclusively robotically-driven fabrication and highly crafted processes requiring human labour. This is to propose an alternative to reducing construction to fully automated assembly of simplified/discretized building parts, by appreciating physical properties of materials and nature of crafting processes. The research proposes a design-to-construction workflow pursued and enabled by augmented humans using AR devices. As a result, proposed workflows are tested on three prototypical inhabitable structure, aiming to be applicable to other projects in the near future, and to bridge the gap between purely automated construction processes on one hand, and craft-based, material-driven but labour-intensive processes on the other.

summary Within the context of continuous technology transformations, the way scientists and designers process data is changing dramatically from simplification and explicit defined rules to searching and retrieving. Ideally, such a trending method can eliminate issues including deviation and ambiguity with the help of hypothetically unlimited computational power. To process data in this manner, artificial intelligence is necessary and needs to be integrated into the design process. An experiment of a design process that consists of a generative model, a data library, and a machine learning system (GAN) is introduced to demonstrate its effectiveness. The methodology is further evaluated by comparing its output with its input targets, which proves the possibility of employing machine learning systems to aggressively process data and automate the design process. Further improvement of such methodology, including judging criteria and possible applications, and the sensibility of the machine is also discussed at the end.

summary House Block was a temporary housing prototype in East London, UK from April to May 2021. The project constituted the most recent in a series of experiments developing Automated Architecture (AUAR) Labs’ discrete framework for housing production, one which repositions the architect as curator of a system and enables participants to engage with active agency. Recognizing that there is a knowledge gap to be addressed for this reconfiguration of practices to take form, this project centred on making automation and its potential for local communities tangible. This sits within broader calls advocating for a more material alignment of inclusive design with makers and 21st Century making in practice (see, for example, Luck 2018).

House Block was designed and built using AUAR’s discrete housing system consisting of a kit of parts, known as Block Type A. Each block was CNC milled from a single sheet of plywood, assembled by hand, and then post-tensioned on site. Constructed from 270 identical blocks, there are no predefined geometric types or hierarchy between parts. The discrete enables an open-ended, adaptive system where each block can be used as a column, floor slab, wall, or stair—allowing for disconnection, reconfiguration, and reassembly (Retsin 2019). The democratisation of design and production that defines the discrete creates points for alternative value systems to enter, for critical realignments in architectural production.

summary Craft knowledge, practices, and communities are vanishing due to globalization, automation, and techno-centric developments. This paper evaluates a computational design tool - the Bailey-Derek Grammar - for restoration of craftsmanship in the practice of wire-bending. By conducting workshops, interviews and surveys, document and artifact analyses, I examine the role of the Grammar in repairing the craft. The results shed light on how a computational description of tacit knowledge in the form of a shape grammar aids in restoring technical knowledge and skill in a craft. Results also indicate that the computational design tool promotes democratization of the craft by creating new forms of practice, and new roles for participation and engagement.
