title Generative systems in the architecture, engineering and construction industry: A systematic review and analysis

summary Researchers have been extensively exploring the employment of generative systems to support design practices in the architecture, engineering and construction industry since the 1970s. More than half a century passed since the first architecture, engineering and construction industry’s generative systems were developed; researchers have achieved remarkable leaps backed by advances in computing power and algorithms’ capacity. In this article, we present a systematic analysis of the literature published between 2009 and 2019 on the utilization of generative systems in the design practices of the architecture, engineering and construction industry. The present research studies present trends, collaborations and applications of generative systems in the architecture, engineering and construction industry in order to identify existing shortcomings and potential advancements that balance the need for theory development and practical application. It provides insightful observations that are translated into meaningful recommendations for future research necessary to progress the incorporation of generative systems into the design practices of the architecture, engineering and construction industry.

summary The use of Additive Manufacturing (AM) for the production of architectural components has more and more examples attesting the possibilities and the advantages of its application. At the same time we seen a fast grow of the usage of ceramic materials to produce fully customised architectural components using Layer Deposition Modelling (LDM) [1] techniques. However, the use of this material, as paste, leads to a series of constraints relative to its behaviour when in the viscous state, but also in the drying and firing stages. Thus, when ceramic dries, the retraction effects may be a barrier to the regular use of this material to build future architectural systems. In this sense, it is important to study the material behaviour and know how to control and use it as a primary construction material. To do that we present the challenges and outcomes of project Hexashade, a ceramic vault shading system prototype whose geometry and internal structure is defined according to the solar incidence. This paper explain how we expect to build a real scale self-supporting prototype.

summary The artificial intelligence methods, such as case-based reasoning and artificial neural networks were already applied to the task of architectural design support in a multitude of specific approaches and tools. However, modern AI trends, such as Explainable AI (XAI), and additional features, such as providing contextual suggestions for the next step of the design process, were rarely considered an integral part of these approaches or simply not available. In this paper, we present an application of a distributed AI-based methodology FLEA (Find, Learn, Explain, Adapt) to the task of room configuration during the early conceptual phases of architectural design. The implementation of the methodology in the framework MetisCBR applies CBR-based methods for retrieval of similar floor plans to suggest possibly inspirational designs and to explain the returned results with specific explanation patterns. Furthermore, it makes use of a farm of recurrent neural networks to suggest contextually suitable next configuration steps and to present design variations that show how the designs may evolve in the future. The flexibility of FLEA allows for variational use of its components in order to activate the currently required modules only. The methodology was initialized during the basic research project Metis (funded by German Research Foundation) during which the architectural semantic search patterns and a family of corresponding floor plan representations were developed. FLEA uses these patterns and representations as the base for its semantic search, explanation, next step suggestion, and adaptation components. The methodology implementation was iteratively tested during quantitative evaluations and user studies with multiple floor plan datasets.

title Multi-agent space planning: a literature review (2008-2017)

summary In this paper we review the research on multi-agent space planning (MASP) during the period of 2008-2017. By MASP, we refer to space planning (SP) methods based on online mobile agents that map local perceptions to actions in the environment, generating spatial representation. We group two precedents and sixteen recent MASP prototypes into three categories: (1) agents as moving spatial units, (2) agents that occupy a space, and (3) agents that partition a space. In order to compare the prototypes, we identify the occurrence of features in terms of representation, objectives, and control procedures. Upon analysis of occurrences and correlations of features in the types, we present gaps and challenges for future MASP research. We point to the limits of current systems to solve spatial conflicts and to incorporate architectural knowledge. Finally, we suggest that behavioral learning offers a promising path for robust and autonomous MASP systems in the architectural domain.

summary There are severe environmental and ecological issues once we evaluate the architecture industry with LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), such as emission of CO2 caused by necessary high temperature for producing cement and significant amounts of Construction Demolition Waste (CDW) in deteriorated and obsolete buildings. One of the ways to solve these problems is Bio-Material. CELLULOSE and CHITON is the 1st and 2nd abundant substance in nature (Duro-Royo, J.: Aguahoja_ProgrammableWater-based Biocomposites for Digital Design and Fabrication across Scales. MIT, pp. 1–3 (2019)), which means significantly potential for architectural dimension production. Meanwhile, renewability and biodegradability make it more conducive to the current problem of construction pollution. The purpose of this study is to explore Cellulose Based Biomaterial and bring it into architectural scale additive manufacture that engages with performance in the material development, with respect to time of solidification and control of shrinkage, as well as offering mechanical strength. At present, the experiments have proved the possibility of developing a cellulose-chitosan- based composite into 3D-Printing Construction Material (Sanandiya, N.D., Vijay, Y., Dimopoulou, M., Dritsas, S., Fernandez, J.G.: Large-scale additive manufacturing with bioinspired cellulosic materials. Sci. Rep. 8(1), 1–5 (2018)). Moreover, The research shows that the characteristics (Such as waterproof, bending, compression, tensile, transparency) of the composite can be enhanced by different additives (such as xanthan gum, paper fiber, flour), which means it can be customized into various architectural components based on Performance Directional Optimization. This solution has a positive effect on environmental impact reduction and is of great significance in putting the architectural construction industry into a more environment-friendly and smart state.

summary The design inspired by nature is an ongoing issue from the past to the present. There are many design examples inspired from nature. Fractal geometry formation, which is focused on this study, is a system seen in nature. A model based on fractal growth principle was proposed for tile design. In this proposal made with using Visual Programming Language, a tiling design experiment placed in a hexagonal grid system was carried out. Thus, a base was created for tile designs to be made using the fractal principle. The results of the case study were evaluated and potential future studies were discussed.

summary This paper discusses the methodology and results of the Maslow's Palace workshops project, which engages with current debates surrounding the democratisation of digital urban design technology and stakeholder decision making, through the implementation of a speculative oriented approach to serious gaming. The research explores how serious games might be used to help marginalised communities consider past, future and present community experiences, reconcile dissimilar assumptions, generate social capital building and design responses and prime participants for further long term design engagement processes. Empirical material for this research was gathered from a range of case study workshops prepared with three landfill-based communities and external partners throughout 2017. Results show the approach helped participants develop shared norms, values and understandings of sensitive topics and develop ideas for future action through "collective tinkering".

summary The paper theorises and elaborates the idea of crowd-driven assemblies for flexible and adaptive constructions utilising automatic technologies and participatory activities within the context of twenty-first century cities. As economic and technological movements and shifts in society and cultures are present and ongoing, the building technology needs to incorporate human inputs following the aspects of customisation to build adaptive architectural and urban scenarios based on immediate decisions made according to local conditions or specific spatial demands. In particular, the paper focuses on large-scale prototyping for urban applications along with on-site interactions between humans and automatic building technologies to create on-demand spatial scenarios. It discusses the current precedents in research and practice and speculates future directions to be taken in creation, development or customisation of contemporary and future cities based on participatory and crowd-driven building activities. The main aim of this theoretical overview is to offer a more comprehensive understanding of the relations between technology and humans in the context of reactive and responsive built environments.

summary This paper investigates through a review of the current literature on smart cities, reflecting different concepts across different political-social contexts, seeking to contribute to the establishment of a critical framework for smart cities development. The present work provides a review of the literature of 250 selected publications from four databases (Scielo, ScienceDirect, worldwide science, and Cumincad), covering the years from 2012 to 2018. Publications were categorised by the following steps: 3RC framework proposed by Kummitha and Crutzen (2017), the main political sectors of city planning, implementation strategies, computational techniques, and organisation rules. The information was analised graphically trying to identify tendencies along the time, and also, seeking to explore future possibilities for implementations in different political-social contexts. As a case of study, Australia and Brazil were compared using the proposed framework.

summary This paper proposes software reconstruction as a method to shed new light into the material, gestural, and sensual dimensions of computer-aided design technologies. Specifically, it shows how by combining historical research and creative prototyping this method can bring us closer to distant ways of seeing, touching, drawing, and designing—while raising new questions about the impact of CAD technologies on present-day architectural practices. It documents the development of two software reconstructions—of Ivan Sutherland’s “Sketchpad” and of Steven A. Coons’s “Coons Patch”—and reflects on the responses they elicited in the context of two exhibitions. The paper shows how software reconstruction can offer access to overlooked aspects of computer-aided design systems, specially their material and sensual dimensions, and how we may explore its broader potential for research, preservation, pedagogy, and speculative design of design technologies.

summary This paper presents a strategy for implementing computational methods in education to solve specific project related research challenges. In our case, we investigate novel solutions for Organic Photovoltaic Carrier Systems. Therefore, environmental forces (especially the sun and shade) are important design drivers in all projects. Whilst the individual projects are limited to one semester, it is our aim to advance and accumulate these patches within a longer-term research strategy. Especially design-build projects that include digital fabrication often require a skillset not always available in a design studio environment. Providing simple parametric patches frees up time for creative investigations and allows tackling projects that are more complex. In the following, we will present and discuss a series of patches developed over the course of five projects that became our case studies. We conclude, by identifying relevant aspects that might be generalized and evaluate our insights for others.

summary In this paper, we are aiming to present a methodology for generation, manipulation and form finding of structural typologies using variational autoencoders, a machine learning model based on neural networks. We are giving a detailed description of the neural network architecture used as well as the data representation based on the concept of a 3D-canvas with voxelized wireframes. In this 3D-canvas, the input geometry of the building typologies is represented through their connectivity map and subsequently augmented to increase the size of the training set. Our variational autoencoder model then learns a continuous latent distribution of the input data from which we can sample to generate new geometry instances, essentially hybrids of the initial input geometries. Finally, we present the results of these computational experiments and lay out the conclusions as well as outlook for future research in this field.

summary We present results on the development of a sustainable digital manufacturing technology, discuss the challenges associated with additive manufacturing with natural materials, how statistical modelling techniques enabled understanding the intricate relationship between material and fabrication and allowed to control material extrusion. We present a prototype created to assess the ability of the process to create large-scale artifacts. We believe steps towards advancing methods for environmentally-aware digital fabrication may pave the way in transforming the industry and society towards more sustainable production and consumption paradigms.

summary The present paper is focused on exploring a new paradigm in architectural design process that should raise the bar for a mutual collaboration between humans and digital assistants, able to face challenging problems of XXI century. Such a collaboration will aid design process freeing designer from middle level reasoning tasks, so they could focus on exploring - on the fly - design alternatives at a higher abstraction layer of knowledge. Such an assistant should explore and instantiate as much as possible knowledge structures and their inferences thanks to an extensive use of defaults, demons and agents, combined with its power and ubiquity so that they will be able to mimic behaviour of architectural design human experts. It aims other than to deal with data (1st layer) and simple reasoning tools (2nd layer) to automate design exploring consequences and side effects of design decisions and comparing goals (3rd layer). This assistant will speed up the evaluation of fresh design solutions, will suggest solutions by means of generative systems and will be able of a digital creativity.

summary Industrial robotic arms are increasingly present in digital fabrication workflows due to their robustness, degrees of freedom, and potentially large scale. However, the range of possibilities they provide is limited by their typical software control paradigms, specifically offline programming. This model requires all the robotic instructions to be pre-defined before execution, a possibility only affordable in highly predictable environments. But in the context of architecture, design and art, it can hardly accommodate more complex forms of control, such as responding to material feedback, adapting to changing conditions on a construction site, or on-the-fly decision-making. We present Robot Ex Machina, an open-source computational framework of software tools for real-time robot programming and control. The contribution of this framework is a paradigm shift in robot programming models, systematically providing a platform to enable real-time interaction and control of mechanical actuators. Furthermore, it fosters programming styles that are reactive to, rather than prescriptive about, the state of the robot. We argue that this model is, compared to traditional offline programming, beneficial for creative individuals, as its concurrent nature and immediate feedback provide a deeper and richer set of possibilities, facilitates experimentation, flow of thought, and creative inquiry. In this paper, we introduce the framework, and discuss the unifying model around which all its tools are designed. Three case studies are presented, showcasing how the framework provides richer interaction models and novel outcomes in digital making. We conclude by discussing current limitations of the model and future work.

summary The benefits of additive manufacturing technologies for the production of customized construction elements has been well documented for several decades. Multi-material additive manufacturing (MM-AM) enhances these capacities by introducing region-specific characteristics to printed objects. Several examples of the production of multi-material assemblies, including functionally-graded materials (FGMs) exist at the architectural scale, but none are known for ceramics. Factors limiting the development and application of this production method include the cost and complexity of existing MM-AM machinery, and the lack of a suitable computational workflow for the production of MM-AM ceramics, which often relies on a continuous linear toolpath. We present a method for the MM-AM of paste-based ceramics that allows for unique material expressions with relatively simple end-effector design. By borrowing methods of co-extrusion found in other industries and incorporating a 4th axis of motion into the printing process, we demonstrate a precisely controlled MM-AM deposition strategy for paste-based ceramics. We present a computational workflow for the generation of toolpaths, and describe full-body tiles and 3D artifacts that can be produced using this method. Future process refinements include the introduction of more precise control of material gradation and refinements to material composition for increased element functionality.

summary The fourth Industrial Revolution is characterised by the computational fusion of physical, digital and biological systems. Increasing information in terms of size, speed and scope exponentially. This fusion requires improved, if not new, tools and methods to deal with complexity and information processing. By opening Generative Systems to interact with the context, we believe that they can develop solutions that are more adequate for our time. This research began with a literature review about generative systems and their application to solve problems. We then selected the tools, Cellular Automata, L-Systems, Genetic Algorithms and Shape Grammar, and thought about how to translate these original mathematical tools to specific design situations. We tested the application of these tools and methods in a workshop, implementing recursive loops to open these techniques to interference. Analysing the empirical results made us revise our design thinking, relying on the study of complexity to understand how these techniques can be more context-aware, so we can make design evolve. Finally, we present a comparative framework analyses that interlaces techniques and methods, so in the future we can merge physical, digital and biological information.

summary Robotics has been largely confined to the object category with fewer examples at the scale of buildings. Robotic buildings present unique challenges in communicating intent to the enclosed user. Precedent work in architectural robotics explored the performative dimension, the playful and interactive qualities, and the cognitive challenges of AI systems interacting with people in architecture. The Flexing Room robotic skeleton was installed at MIT at its full designed height for the first time and tested for two weeks in the summer of 2019. The approximately 13-foot-tall structure is comprised of 36 pneumatic actuators and an active bend fiberglass structure. The full height allowed for a wide range of postures the structure could take. Acoustic monitoring through Piezo pickup mics was added that allowed for basic rhythmic responses of the structure to people tapping or otherwise triggering the vibration sensors. Data streams were collected synchronously from Kinect skeleton tracking, piezo pickup mics, camera streams, and posture data. The emphasis in this test period was first to establish reliable hardware operations at full scale and second to record correlated data streams of the sensors installed in the structure together with the actuation triggers and the human poses of the inhabitant. The full-scale installation of hardware was successful and proved the feasibility of the structural and actuation approach previously tested on a one-level setup. The range of postures was increased and more transparent for the occupant. The perception of the structure as space was also improved as the system reached regular ceiling height and formed a clearer architectural scale enclosure. The ambition of communicating through architectural postures has not been achieved yet, but promising directions emerged from the test and data collection

summary Advances in computational design and robotic building methods have the potential to enable architects to author more sustainable, efficient, and geometrically varied systems that shape our built environment. To fully harness this potential, the inherent relationship of design and building processes requires a fundamental shift in the way we design and how we build. High degree of customization in architectural projects and constantly changing conditions of construction environments pose significant challenges for the implementation of automated construction machines. Beyond traditional, human-inspired, industrial robotic building methods, we present a distributed robotic system where the robotic builders are designed in direct relationship with the material and architecture they assemble. Modular, collaborative, single axis robots are designed to utilize standardized timber struts as a basic building material, and as a part of their locomotion system, to create large-scale timber structures with high degrees of differentiation. The decentralized, multi-robot system uses a larger number of simple machines that collaborate in teams to work in parallel on varying tasks such as material transport, placement, and fixing. The research explores related architectural and robotic typologies to create timber structures with novel aesthetics and performances.

summary Browser-based platforms (Google Docs or Minecraft) have instigated the value of collaborative environments. Browser-based modelling point out a future for the AEC industry. Yet at present no literature review nor a taxonomy of browser-based modelling platforms exist. A key outcome of a unique taxonomy framework of existing BMA characteristics reveals that current BMAs do not take full advantage of the web's unique capabilities such as centralising data across multiple tools within an 'ecosystem'. Consequently, this taxonomy has productively guided the development of Redback BIM, a proof-of-concept BMA that enables the coordination of BIM data in a collaborative online context. Redback BIM further demonstrates how, through establishing a universal data-type, a diverse range of scripts can be consolidated together in an online platform to enable greater accessibility for a range of AEC professionals towards improved project communication and efficiency.
