summary The Architecture of ScarCity Game is a board game used as a pedagogical tool that challenges architecture students by involving them in a series of experimental design sessions to understand the design process of scarcity and the actual relation between the craft and the digital. This means "pragmatic delivery processes and material constraints, where the exchange between the artisan of handmade, representing local skills and technology of the digitally conceived is explored" (Huang 2013). The game focuses on understanding the different variables of the crafted design process of traditional communities under conditions of scarcity (Michel and Bevan 1992). This requires first analyzing the spatial environmental model of interaction, available human and natural resources, and the dynamic relationship of these variables in a digital era. In the first stage (Pre-Agency), the game set the concept of the craft by limiting students design exploration from a minimum possible perspective developing locally available resources and techniques. The key elements of the design process of traditional knowledge communities have to be identified (Preez 1984). In other words, this stage is driven by limited resources + chance + contingency. In the second stage (Post-Agency) students taking the architects´ role within this communities, have to speculate and explore the interface between the craft (local knowledge and low technological tools), and the digital represented by computation data, new technologies available and construction. This means the introduction of strategy + opportunity + chance as part of the design process. In this sense, the game has a life beyond its mechanics. This other life challenges the participants to exploit the possibilities of breaking the actual boundaries of design. The result is a tool to challenge conventional methods of teaching and leaning controlling a prescribed design process. It confronts the rules that professionals in this field take for granted. The game simulates a 'fake' reality by exploring in different ways with surveyed information. As a result, participants do not have anything 'real' to lose. Instead, they have all the freedom to innovate and be creative.

summary This paper presents an innovative approach to the design and fabrication of three-dimensional objects from single-piece flat sheets, inspired by the origami technique of twist-closing. While in origami twist-closing is merely used to stabilize a cylindrical or spherical structure, ensuring it maintains its shape, this research investigates the potential of twist-closing as a multi-functional mechanism that also activates and controls the transformation of a planar surface into a predesigned three-dimensional form. This exploration is directed towards an intended application to stiff and brittle sheet materials that are difficult to shape through other processes. The methods we have developed draw mainly upon principles of lattice kirigami and laminar reciprocal structures. These are reflected in a workflow that integrates digital form-generation and fabrication-rationalization techniques to reference and apply these principles at every stage. Significant capabilities of the developed methodology include: (1) achievement of pseudo-double-curvature with brittle, stiff sheet materials; (2) stabilization in a 3D end-state as a frameless self-contained single-element laminar reciprocal structure—essentially a compliant mechanism; and (3) an ability to pre-encode 3D assembly constraints in a 2D cutout pattern, which guides a moldless fabrication process. The paper reviews the precedent geometric techniques and principles that comprise this method of 3D surface fabrication and describes a sample deployment of the method as applied to the design of laminar modules made of high-pressure laminate (HPL).

summary The emergence of computational design and fabrication tools has escalated the potentials of architectural ornamentation to become innovative, beautiful, and highly sustainable. Historically, ornament has been known to express character and reveal relationships between materiality, technological advances, and societal evolution. But ornament rapidly declined in the late 1800s in large part due to mechanization and modernist ideals of uniform, unadorned façade components. However, ornamentation in architecture has recently reappeared—a development that can be linked closely to advancements in computational design and digital fabrication. While these advancements offer the ability to create expressive architecture, their potential contribution to the improvement of sustainable architecture has largely been overlooked (Augusti-Juan and Habert 2017). This paper provides a brief revisitation to the history of ornament and investigates the impact of computation and automation on the production of contemporary ornament. The paper also attempts to catalog examples of how designers have used computational technologies to address the growing criticality of environmental concerns. Moreover, the paper presents the Waste Ornament project, a research platform that critically examines how we can leverage technology to augment the visual and sustainable performance of facade ornamentation to reduce energy use in buildings. Three sub-projects are identified as territories for further research into sustainable ornamentation, ranging from material sourcing, to high-performance buildings, to the development of a systematic upcycling process that transforms old facades into new ones. While the examples are not exhaustive, they attempt to interlace the general ideas of waste and ornament by addressing particular issues that converge at building envelopes.

summary Over the past decade, we have witnessed rapid advancements on both practical and theoretical levels in regard to automated construction as a consequence of increasing sophistication of digital fabrication technologies such as robotics, 3D printing, etc. However, digital fabrication technology is often very limited when it comes to dealing with delicate and complex crafting processes. Although digital fabrication processes have become widely accessible and utilized across industries in recent times, there are still a number of fabrication techniques—which heavily rely on human labour—due to the complex nature of procedures and delicacy of materials. With this in mind, we need to ask ourselves if full automation is truly an ultimate goal, or if we need to (re)consider the role of humans in the architectural construction chain, as automation becomes more prevalent. We propose rethinking the role which human, machine, and computer have in construction— occupying the territory between purely automated, exclusively robotically-driven fabrication and highly crafted processes requiring human labour. This is to propose an alternative to reducing construction to fully automated assembly of simplified/discretized building parts, by appreciating physical properties of materials and nature of crafting processes. The research proposes a design-to-construction workflow pursued and enabled by augmented humans using AR devices. As a result, proposed workflows are tested on three prototypical inhabitable structure, aiming to be applicable to other projects in the near future, and to bridge the gap between purely automated construction processes on one hand, and craft-based, material-driven but labour-intensive processes on the other.

summary In architecture, the use of Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies has been typically undermined by the long production time, elevated cost to manufacture parts and the low mechanical properties of 3D printed components. As AM becomes faster cheaper and stronger, opportunities for architectures that make creative use of AM to produce functional architectural pieces are emerging. In this paper, we propose and discuss the application of metal AM in complex space frames and the theoretical and practical implications. A functional lightweight metal table by the authors support our hypothesis that AM has a clear application in architecture and furniture design, and that space frames constitutes a promising structural typology. Specifically, we investigate how AM using metal as a material can be used in the application of fabrication of complex space frame structure components and connection details. The paper presents background research and our contribution to the digital design tools, the manufacturing and assembly processes, and the analysis of the performances of a parametrically designed and digitally fabricated large meeting table. Insights from this paper are deployed in an architectural scale project, AIRMesh, a metal 3D-printed pavilion set in the greenery of Gardens by the Bay, Singapore.

summary This paper describes a framework for discrete computational design and fabrication in the context of automation. Whereas digital design and fabrication are technical notions, automation immediately has societal and political repercussions. Automation relates to industrialization and mechanisation—allowing to historically reconnect the digital while bypassing the post-modern, deconstructivist, or parametric decades. Using a series of built prototypes making use of timber, this paper will describe how the combined technologies of automation and discreteness enable both technical efficiencies and new architectural interest. Both projects are based on timber sheet materials, cut and folded into larger elements that are then assembled into functional structures. Both projects are also fragments of larger housing blocks. Discrete building blocks are presented from a technical perspective as occupying a space in between programmable matter and modular prefabrication. Timber is identified as an ideal material for automated discrete construction. From an architectural perspective, the paper discusses the implications of an architecture based on parts that remain autonomous from the whole.

summary This paper presents an exploration following wood patterns applied to traditional woodworking techniques such as steam bending and carving. It builds on a digital fabrication process where the patterns that are unique to each wood strip and which constitutes their structural geometry are also used within fabrication processes and applied machinery such as the zund machine. The experiments were done in two series where the earlier set focuses on routing along the wood patterns of thin wood strips and steam bending the different pieces. The second set experimented with carving thick wood strips on passes generated from the extracted patterns. An automated technique based in computer vision and specifically OpenCV was developed using different filters in order to extract the patterns and transfer the results into CAD software where the lines where further manipulated for variable exploration. The results of this study led to a better understanding of wood patterns from a geometrical perspective thus enriching the aesthetic composition of a design while being authentic to the unique nature of each piece of wood.

summary As the field of 3D printing technologies expand, complex materials that require a deeper engagement, due to their more unstable properties, are of increasing interest. Cementitious composites, clays and other ceramic materials are of particular relevance: their potential for fast large-scale fabrication and local availability position these technologies at the forefront of expansion for 3D printing. Despite the extensive benefits inherent to clays, their irregularities and the largely unpredictable deviations that occur when printing from a digital model, currently limit design and architectural-scale applications. However, these deformations could conversely be harnessed as design generators, opening up avenues for both aesthetic and functional exploration. The paper presents an investigation into the inherent material instabilities of the clay 3D printing process for the development of an architectural masonry facade system. Through an iterative process based in craft, a new capacity for material expression and authenticity beyond previous manufacturing capabilities can become actualized.

summary The paper documents the design and development of an additive manufacturing process based on stone aggregates. Unlike conventional 3D printing technologies which target miniaturization of the material grain and deposition layers to achieve as high resolution as possible, our process deploys sizeable and randomized grains of stone. The objective of this is to leverage between physical scale of the particulate and time it takes to produce large enough artefacts, fast enough to potentially evoke spatial qualities. Perhaps unavoidably, due to its materiality, the process revisits one of the most archaic methods of building technology, namely masonry, and suggests for a unique digital perspective for structures and landscapes made from stone.

title Meeting in the middle: Hybrid clay three-dimensional fabrication processes for bio-reef structures

summary Despite the relative accessibility of clay, its low cost and reputation as a robust and sustainable building material, clay three-dimensional printing remains an under-utilized digital fabrication technique in the production of architectural artefacts. Given this, numerous research projects have sought to extend the viability of clay three-dimensional digital fabrication by streamlining and automating workflows through computational methods and robotic technologies in ways that afford agency to the digital and machinic processes over human bodily skill. Three-dimensional printed clay has also gained prominence as a resilient material well suited to the design and fabrication of artificial reef and habitat- enhancing seawall structures for coastal marine environments depleted and disrupted by human activity, climate change and pollution. Still, these projects face similar challenges when three-dimensional printing complex forms from the highly plastic and somewhat unpredictable feed material of clay. In response, this article outlines a research project that seeks to improve the translation of complex geometries into physical clay artefacts through additive three- dimensional printing processes by drawing on the notion of digital craft and giving focus to human–machine interaction as a collaborative practice. Through the case study of the 1:1 scale fabrication of a computationally generated bio-reef structure using clay as a feed material and a readily available Delta Potterbot XLS-2 ceramic printer, the research project documents how, by exploiting the human ability to intuitively handle clay and adapt, and the machine’s ability to work efficiently and with precision, humans and machines can fabricate together . With the urgent need to develop more sustainable building practices and materials, this research contributes valuable knowledge of hybrid fabrication processes towards extending the accessibility and viability of clay three-dimensional printing as a resilient material and fabrication system.

summary Technology inevitably evolves and develops rapidly in the modern era, industries and professions continue to strive in integrating, adapting and utilising these advancements to improve, optimise and improve the process of design to manufacture to the user experience. One such system that fits into this category is the advent of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. The numerous possibilities to which these visually and spatially immersive systems opportunities for immense innovation often lacks direction or an ultimate goal thus rendering this piece of software to often be little more than a visualisation tool.This paper recognises the unique position that VR allows and seeks to interrogate and deconstruct current, traditional design processes to better utilise VR in aiding and reinforcing the idea of partial testing of ideas and concepts throughout the design cycle. Different sciences such as psychology, processes and automation from computational design and considerations within software development will be employed and injected into the broader architectural context in which this research presides. In addition to the VR headset, eye tracking external hardware are integrated to develop a seamless tool and workflow that allows us, as designers to better interrogate clients behaviour within our designed digital representations which leads to validations, evaluations and criticisms of our actions within the architectural realm.

summary This paper presents our concept, named Interactive Assemblies, which facilitates interaction between man and machine in construction process in which specially designed building components are used as a design interface. In our setup, users physically manipulate and reposition building components. The components, digitized by means of machine sensing, become a part of the design interface. Each of the three experiments included in this paper examines a different robotic sensor approach that helps transfer of data, including the position and shape of each component, back into the digital model. We investigate combinations of material systems (material computation, selfcorrecting assembly) and matching sensors. The accumulated data serves as input for design algorithms and generates robot tool paths for collaborative fabrication. Using real-world geometry to move from virtual design tools directly to physical interaction and back, our research proposes enhanced participation of human actors in robotic construction processes in architecture.

title Computational modeling for climate change: Simulating and visualizing a resilient landscape architecture design approach

summary Coastlines are changing, wildfires are raging, cities are getting hotter, and spatial designers are charged with the task of designing to mitigate these unknowns. This research examines computational digital workflows to understand and alleviate the impacts of climate change on urban landscapes. The methodology includes two separate simulation and visualization workflows. The first workflow uses an animated particle fluid simulator in combination with geographic information systems data, Photoshop software, and three-dimensional modeling and animation software to simulate erosion and sedimentation patterns, coastal inundation, and sea level rise. The second workflow integrates building information modeling data, computational fluid dynamics simulators, and parameters from EnergyPlus and Landsat to produce typologies and strategies for mitigating urban heat island effects. The effectiveness of these workflows is demonstrated by inserting design prototypes into modeled environments to visualize their success or failure. The result of these efforts is a suite of workflows which have the potential to vastly improve the efficacy with which architects and landscape architects use existing data to address the urgency of climate change.

summary Metal joints play a relevant role in space frame constructions, being responsible for large amount of the overall material and fabrication cost. Space frames which are constructed with standardized metal joints are constrained to repetitive structures and topologies. For customized space frames, the fabrication of individual metal joints still remains a challenge. Traditional fabrication methods such as sand casting are labour intensive, while direct 3D metal printing is too expensive and slow for the large volumes needed in architecture.This research investigates the use of Binder Jetting technology to 3D print sand molds for casting bespoke metal joints in architecture. Using this approach, a large number of custom metal joints can be fabricated economically in short time. By automating the generation of the joint geometry and the corresponding mold system, an efficient digital process chain from design to fabrication is established. Several design studies for cast metal joints are presented. The approach is successfully tested on the example of a full scale space frame structure incorporating almost two hundred custom aluminum joints.

summary Brickwork is the oldest construction method still in use. Digital technologies, in turn, enabled new methods of representation and automation for bricklaying. While automation explored different approaches, representation was limited to declarative methods, as parametric filling algorithms. Alternatively, this work proposes a framework for automated brickwork using a machine learning model based on image-to-image translation (Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks). The framework consists of creating a dataset, training a model for each bond, and converting the output images into vectorial data for robotic assembly. Criteria such as: reaching wall boundary accuracy, avoidance of unsupported bricks, and brick's position accuracy were individually evaluated for each bond. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework fulfils boundary filling and respects overall bonding structural rules. Size accuracy demonstrated inferior performance for the scale tested. The association of this method with 'self-calibrating' robots could overcome this problem and be easily implemented for on-site.

After discussing the relations between artificial intelligence and the broader question of automation in architecture, this article focuses on the future of the interaction between humans and intelligent machines. The way machines will understand architecture may be very different from the reading of humans. Since the Renaissance, the architectural discipline has defined itself as a conversation between different stakeholders, the designer, but also the clients and the artisans in charge of the realization of projects. How can this conversation be adapted to the rise of intelligent machines? Such a question is not only a matter of design effectiveness. It is inseparable from expressive and artistic issues. Just like the fascination of modernist architecture for industrialization was intimately linked to the quest for a new poetics of the discipline, our contemporary interest for artificial intelligence has to do with questions regarding the creative core of the architectural discipline.

summary In contemporary data-driven society, forces of capital increasingly seek risk-averse decision making through data and digital calculation, aligned to this the discourse around design intelligence in architecture has begun to embrace the role of data and the technical non-human as much as the human. In parallel, the cultural understanding of data, in technologically mediated societies, has become tied to the digital representation of information experienced in everyday life, which in turn influences human practices. A problem exists in the dominance of scientific thought around data in architecture that exerts disciplinary bias towards quantity rather than quality. In contemporary digital practice, data is assumed to offer an objective characterisation of the world and have faithful representation through the mechanisms of the computer. From this shift, a macro question exists concerning the influence of data's conceptualisation on the physical products of architecture. To contribute to this overall question this paper considers the register of data in early modernism identified as a moment when scientific abstraction and the mapping capacity of the machine combine to afford recognisable data practices and infrastructures.

summary Advancements in robotic fabrication are enabling on-site construction in increasingly larger scales. In this paper, we argue that as autonomous tools encounter the territorial scale, they open new ways to embed information into it. To define the new practice, this paper introduces a protocol combining a theoretical framework and an iterative process titled Informing Grounds. This protocol mediates and supports the exchange of knowledge between a digital and a physical environment and is applicable to a variety of materials with uncertain characteristics in a robotic manufacturing scenario. The process is applied on soil and demonstrated through a recent design-to-fabrication workshop that focused on simulating digital groundscaping of distant lunar grounds employing robotic sand-forming. The first stage is ‘sampling’—observing the physical domain both as an initial step as well as a step between the forming cycles to update the virtual model. The second stage is ‘streaming’—the generation of information derived from the digital model and its projection onto the physical realm. The third stage is ‘transforming’—the shaping of the sand medium through a physical gesture. The workshop outcomes serve as the basis for discussion regarding the challenges posed by applying autonomous robotic tools on materials with uncertain behavior at a large-scale.

summary This paper discusses the methodology and results of the Maslow's Palace workshops project, which engages with current debates surrounding the democratisation of digital urban design technology and stakeholder decision making, through the implementation of a speculative oriented approach to serious gaming. The research explores how serious games might be used to help marginalised communities consider past, future and present community experiences, reconcile dissimilar assumptions, generate social capital building and design responses and prime participants for further long term design engagement processes. Empirical material for this research was gathered from a range of case study workshops prepared with three landfill-based communities and external partners throughout 2017. Results show the approach helped participants develop shared norms, values and understandings of sensitive topics and develop ideas for future action through "collective tinkering".

summary We have seen increasing expectations from our cities: as we aim to enable them to become smarter, more efficient and more sustainable. Having these goals makes the urban designing process increasingly complex. Undertaking contemporary urban design and analysis requires a rounded and inclusive approach. In the discussion relating to the smart city there has been attention to infrastructure technology solutions. But ways of estimating the success of more comprehensive urban design interventions is also extremely important. In response to these needs, digital urban design simulation and analysis software packages have been developed to help urban designers model and evaluate their designs before they take shape in the real world. We analyse, and reflect on the current aids available, classifying the urban design software packages which were used in the body of knowledge. In addition, more influential urban design software packages have been reviewed to figure out in which stages of the urban design process, they have applied. This review also helpful for software developer to understand which software packages more useful and which ones need to be developed in future.
