summary We propose a computational design tool that aims to provide more variety to the design of high-rise residential building facades. In contemporary cities, the pressure to build many high-rise residential buildings leaves little time to focus on facade design, resulting in repetitive facades that impart a monotonous appearance to cities. We propose a computational tool that can help to improve facade variety, based on shape grammars and parametric modeling. Shape grammars are used to analyze facade composition and to structure design knowledge. Subsequently, the grammars are converted into parametric models, which are implemented using the Python programming language that can be used to generate designs in CAD software. The resulting tool encodes a general parametric model that manipulates the rules of formal composition of building facades. Without limitations from software, the program takes advantage of the high-processing power of the computer to provide many design solutions from which architects can choose.

summary In 2005, the rural housing deficit in Colombia was 1,600,000 units, which is equivalent to 68.25% of the total households. This very high number shows the difficulties faced by public policies on rural housing. This deficit is partly due to logistical problems related to the supply of materials and complexity in construction processes. It is necessary to explore new alternatives to offer more and better homes at lower costs. The research project presented in this manuscript started in 2013 as an initiative to reduce the housing deficit. It proposed to build a rural housing prototype integrating digital manufacturing processes. The performance of part of the structural and enclosing system was evaluated during a first iteration process to include changes in a second iteration later. With the adjustments to the design process discussed here, the prototype is expected to be built and tested to measure its efficiency and functioning.

summary Soil is still used as a building material in many parts of the world, especially in rural areas. Approximately 30% of the world's population is still living in shelters made by soil (Berge 2009). One of the techniques is using soil in mudbrick form, which is sun dried instead of being fired in kilns. However, mud bricks have low compressive and tensile strength. Instead of enhancing the mix formula, we focus on designing the geometry of the brick itself to improve walls' overall compressive and tensile strength. The goal of the research is to explore an innovative way to build masonry walls through geometrical examination together with computer aided design. Unlike traditional horizontal laying of the rectangular brick elements, 3D designed blocks take advantage of gravity and foster an accelerated assembly without mortar. They create a balance point in the middle of the wall during the construction. The geometry of V-INCA blocks allows dry construction which will reduce the amount of time spent on the site. Load distribution and the friction between two surfaces are sufficient to have a dry construction. Thus, a wall built with V-INCA is stronger intrinsically due to its geometry.

summary Rural Vitalization being a nation-wide policy for China in the following five years, it is becoming even more important to preserve and conserve the village heritage, especially with the global background of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) involvement. This research reviews on the existing and potential methods which has been or could be used to better understand the rural built environment in the new data age, and proposes an interactive message platform named Rural Information Modelling (RIM) which could collect, storage, analyze and display the various message concerning the village heritage, especially the morphological, cognitive and behavioural information. With the help of RIM, stakeholders can better interact with the rural environment, and better negotiate with each other, leading to a more objective and rational construction process, which could express the willingness of both the outside architects, urban planners and visitors, and the in situ villagers and government.

summary This paper aims to propose an approach to automated classifying building element instance in BIM using deep learning-based 3D object classification algorithm. Recently, studies related to checking or validating engine of BIM object for ensuring data integrity of BIM instances are getting attention. As a part of this research, this paper train recognition models that are targeted at basic building element and interior element using 3D object recognition technique that uses images of objects as inputs. Object recognition is executed in two stages; 1) class of object (e.g. wall, window, seating furniture, toilet fixture and etc.), 2) sub-type of specific classes (e.g. Toilet or Urinal). Using the trained models, BIM plug-in prototype is developed and the performance of this AI-based approach with test BIM model is checked. We expect this recognition approach to help ensure the integrity of BIM data and contribute to the practical use of BIM.

summary This paper presents a 3D Concrete Printing (3DCP) experiment at the full scale of virtualarchitectural bodies developed through a computational technique based on the use of Cellular Automata (CA). The theoretical concept behind this technique is the decoding of errors in form generation and the invention of a process that would recreate the errors as a response to optimization (Adilenidou 2015). The generative design process established a family of structural and formal elements whose proliferation is guided through sets of differential grids (multi-grids) leading to the build-up of large span structures and edifices, for example, a cathedral. This tooling system is capable of producing, with specific inputs, a large number of outcomes in different scales. However, the resulting virtual surfaces could be considered as "unprintable" either due to their need of extra support or due to the presence of many cavities in the surface topology. The above characteristics could be categorized as errors, malfunctions, or undesired details in the geometry of a form that would need to be eliminated to prepare it for printing. This research project attempts to transform these "fabrication imprecisions" through new 3DCP techniques into factors of robustness of the resulting structure. The process includes the elimination of the detail / "errors" of the surface and their later reinsertion as structural folds that would strengthen the assembly. Through this process, the tangible outputs achieved fulfill design and functional requirements without compromising their structural integrity due to the manufacturing constraints.

summary The aim of this ongoing doctoral research is to rely on the incommensurable potential held in Japanese Katagami patterns in order to translate them into three-dimensional speculative architectures and architectural components that afford architects other design approaches differentiated from systemic and typical space configurations. While many designers are diving in the generative and computational design world by developing new personal methods, we would like to recycle the existing production of Katagami patterns into three-dimensional architectural elements that will perpetuate work of Katagami artists beyond time, borders, and scope of applicability. Given that the current digital shift has given us more computation power, we are broadening Katagami with new fabrication strategies and new methods to explore, produce, and stock geometry and data. In this paper, we rely on the Processing library IGeo (developed by Satoru Sugihara) to build bottom-up agent-based algorithms to study the architectural potential of Katagami patterns as a top-down clean and simple initial topology that avoids imitation of standard templates applied during the process of configuring and planning architectural space.

summary The paper theorises and elaborates the idea of crowd-driven assemblies for flexible and adaptive constructions utilising automatic technologies and participatory activities within the context of twenty-first century cities. As economic and technological movements and shifts in society and cultures are present and ongoing, the building technology needs to incorporate human inputs following the aspects of customisation to build adaptive architectural and urban scenarios based on immediate decisions made according to local conditions or specific spatial demands. In particular, the paper focuses on large-scale prototyping for urban applications along with on-site interactions between humans and automatic building technologies to create on-demand spatial scenarios. It discusses the current precedents in research and practice and speculates future directions to be taken in creation, development or customisation of contemporary and future cities based on participatory and crowd-driven building activities. summary This paper presents a strategy for implementing computational methods in education to solve specific project related research challenges. In our case, we investigate novel solutions for Organic Photovoltaic Carrier Systems. Therefore, environmental forces (especially the sun and shade) are important design drivers in all projects. Whilst the individual projects are limited to one semester, it is our aim to advance and accumulate these patches within a longer-term research strategy. Especially design-build projects that include digital fabrication often require a skillset not always available in a design studio environment. Providing simple parametric patches frees up time for creative investigations and allows tackling projects that are more complex. In the following, we will present and discuss a series of patches developed over the course of five projects that became our case studies. We conclude, by identifying relevant aspects that might be generalized and evaluate our insights for others.

summary The use of Additive Manufacturing (AM) for the production of architectural components has more and more examples attesting the possibilities and the advantages of its application. At the same time we seen a fast grow of the usage of ceramic materials to produce fully customised architectural components using Layer Deposition Modelling (LDM) [1] techniques. However, the use of this material, as paste, leads to a series of constraints relative to its behaviour when in the viscous state, but also in the drying and firing stages. Thus, when ceramic dries, the retraction effects may be a barrier to the regular use of this material to build future architectural systems. In this sense, it is important to study the material behaviour and know how to control and use it as a primary construction material. To do that we present the challenges and outcomes of project Hexashade, a ceramic vault shading system prototype whose geometry and internal structure is defined according to the solar incidence. This paper explain how we expect to build a real scale self-supporting prototype.

summary This action research project develops a novel conceptual method for non-standardised concrete construction component fabrication and tests its validity through a speculative design project. The paper questions the practical, procedural and economic drivers behind the design and construction of geometrically complex concrete architecture. It proposes an alternative, simple and economical fabrication method for doubly curved concrete centred on the robotic manufacturing of casting moulds through 5-axis hotwire foam cutting for the making of doubly-curved fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) panels. These panels are used as light-weight sacrificial formwork for in-situ concrete casting. The methodology's opportunity space is tested, evaluated and discussed through a conceptual architectural design project proposal that operates as demonstrator. The paper concludes by addressing the advantages of a design-and-build architecture delivery setup, the potential from using computational technology to adapt conventional design and construction procedures and the expanded role within the design and construction process this gives to architects.

summary This paper challenges digital preoccupations with precision and control and questions the status of tolerance, allowance and error in post-digital, human-centred architectural production. It uses the participatory action research design-and-build project TOROO, a light-weight bending-active bamboo shell structure, built in Hsinchu, Taiwan, in June 2019, as a demonstrator project to discuss how protean digital design diagrams, named 'vibrant objectiles,' are capable of productively absorbing serendipity throughout project crystallisation processes, increasing designer agency in challenging construction contexts with high degrees of unpredictability. The demonstrator project is then used to discuss future research directions that were exposed by the project. Finally, the applicability of working with 'vibrant objectiles' is discussed beyond its local project use. Common characteristics and requirements are extracted, highlighting project setup preconditions for which the scope covered by the architect needs to be both broadened and relaxed to allow for feedback from design implementation phases.

summary This project presents computational design and fabrication methods for locating standard steel reinforcement within 3D printed water-soluble PVA (polyvinyl alcohol) molds to create non-standard concrete columns. Previous methods from “Melting: Augmenting Concrete Columns with Water Soluble 3D Printed Formwork” and “Dissolvable 3D Printed Formwork: Exploring Additive Manufacturing for Reinforced Concrete” (Doyle & Hunt 2019) were adapted for larger-scale construction, including the introduction of new hardware, development of custom programming strategies, and updated digital fabrication techniques. Initial research plans included 3D printing continuous PVA formwork with a KUKA Agilus Kr10 R1100 industrial robotic arm. However, COVID-19 university campus closures led to fabrication shifting to the author’s home, and this phase instead relied upon a LulzBot TAZ 6 (build volume of 280 mm x 280 mm x 250 mm) with an HS+ (Hardened Steel) tool head (1.2 mm nozzle diameter). Two methods were developed for this project phase: new 3D printing hardware and custom GCode production. The methods were then evaluated in the fabrication of three non-standard columns designed around five standard reinforcement bars (3/8-inch diameter): Woven, Twisted, Aperture. Each test column was eight inches in diameter (the same size as a standard Sonotube concrete form) and 4 feet tall, approximately half the height of an architecturally scaled 8-foot-tall column. Each column’s form was generated from combining these diameter and height restrictions with the constraints of standard reinforcement placement and minimum concrete coverage. The formwork was then printed, assembled, cast, and then submerged in water to dissolve the molds to reveal the cast concrete. This mold dissolving process limits the applicable scale for the work as it transitions from the research lab to the construction site. Therefore, the final column was placed outside with its mold intact to explore if humidity and water alone can dissolve the PVA formwork in lieu of submersion.

summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary ARgan is a geometrically complex bamboo sculpture that relied on Mixed Reality (MR) for its joint creation by multiple sculptors and used latest Augmented Reality (AR) technology to guide manual fabrication actions. It was built at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the fall of 2019 by thirty participants of a design-and-build workshop on the integration of AR in construction. As part of its construction workflow, holographic setups were created on multiple devices, including a series of Microsoft HoloLenses and several handheld Smartphones, all linked simultaneously to a single digital base model to interactively guide the manufacturing process. This paper critically evaluates the experience of extending recent AR and MR tool developments towards applications that centre on creative collaborative production. Using ARgan as a demonstrator project, its developed workflow is assessed on its ability to transform a geometrically complex digitally drafted design to its final physically built form, highlighting the necessary strategic integration of variability as an opportunity to relax notions on design precision and exact control. summary The present research is mainly focused on the development of a system that would be able to offer the potentiality of constructing free-form surfaces by using developable surfaces. Through a deep revision of pre-computational traditional geometric systems based on the classical Descriptive Geometry, after a re-interpretation that design and algorithmic generation tools allow by using computers and digital fabrication hardware as testing ground, a geometric control process has been designed in order to offer the possibility of managing double-curvature complex forms and their adaptation by using developable surfaces. The focal point of this system is proving how developable surfaces are suitable to build architectonical elements at real scale.

summary This research presents the development of a construction system for a solid expanded cork building envelope. The inspiration for this research is the “Cork House” built in 2019 by Matthew Barnett Howland and Oliver Wilton, who developed a Cork Construction Kit for a monolithic dry-jointed cork structure. The goal of this research is to analyze and develop different varieties of construction methods for a dry-joined cork building by combining and applying traditional masonry techniques. The objective is to generate a material-based design for cork construction elements trough prototyping and using a selection of digital tools such as 3D modeling and 3D printing. Expanded cork is a 100% plant-based material which, if applied correctly, has the capacity to be used as a load bearing, insulating and protective structure all at once. It has almost no environmental impact and is completely compostable. To maintain the material's compostable property, this construction system has to be developed without any kind of binders or mortar. Additionally, this more reduced and simplified form of construction will not only make it possible to build without any specific expertise, but at the same time ensure resources to be reused or composted at the end of building life.

summary Designing mechanisms can be a challenging problem, because the underlying kinematics involved are typically not intuitively incorporated into common techniques for design representation. Kinematic shapes and kinematic grammars build on the shape grammar and making grammar formalisms to enable a visually intuitive approach to model and explore mechanisms. With reference to the lower kinematic pairs this paper introduces kinematic shapes. These are connected shapes with parts which have variable spatial relations that account for the relative motion of the parts. The paper considers how such shapes can be defined, the role of elements shared by connected parts, and the motions that result. It also considers how kinematic shape rules can be employed to generate and explore the motion of mechanisms.

summary The granary building form has significant effects on thermal performance, especially in hot climate regions. This research is focused on exploring the influences of parameters relevant to building form design on thermal performance for granary buildings in Jiangsu and Anhui, China(both provinces belong to the hot summer region). The usual method is to use simulation software to perform a sensitivity analysis of thermal performance to assess the impacts of granary design parameters and identify the essential characteristics. However, many factors are affecting the thermal performance of granary buildings. The use of traditional energy simulation software requires calculation and analysis of a large number of models. In this study, we build a machine learning model to predict the thermal performance of granary buildings and identify the most influential design parameters of thermal performance in granary building. The input parameters include outdoor temperature, building height, aspect ratio, orientation, heat transmission coefficient of the wall and roof, and overall scale. The results show that the overall building scale is the most influential variable to the annual electricity consumption for cooling, whereas the heat transmission coefficient of the roof is the most influential to the change of the indoor temperature.

summary Advances in computational design and robotic building methods have the potential to enable architects to author more sustainable, efficient, and geometrically varied systems that shape our built environment. To fully harness this potential, the inherent relationship of design and building processes requires a fundamental shift in the way we design and how we build. High degree of customization in architectural projects and constantly changing conditions of construction environments pose significant challenges for the implementation of automated construction machines. Beyond traditional, human-inspired, industrial robotic building methods, we present a distributed robotic system where the robotic builders are designed in direct relationship with the material and architecture they assemble. Modular, collaborative, single axis robots are designed to utilize standardized timber struts as a basic building material, and as a part of their locomotion system, to create large-scale timber structures with high degrees of differentiation. The decentralized, multi-robot system uses a larger number of simple machines that collaborate in teams to work in parallel on varying tasks such as material transport, placement, and fixing. The research explores related architectural and robotic typologies to create timber structures with novel aesthetics and performances.
