summary In terms of the efficiency and informatization in the architecture and construction industry, the Fourth Industrial Revolution presents positive aspects of technological development, but we need to discuss the expanded concept, the Anthropocene. The era of the human-made environment having a powerful influence on the global system is called Anthropocene. Since the 1950s, many indicators representing human activity and earth system have shown the 'Great acceleration'. Currently, lots of urban data including building information, construction waste, and GHG emission ratio is indicating how much the urban area was contaminated with artifacts. So, the integrated planning and design approach are needed for sustainable design with data integration. This paper examines the GIS, LCA and BIM tools focusing on building information and environmental load. With the literature review, the computational system for sustainable design is demonstrated to integrate into one holistic framework for the Anthropocene. There were some limitations that data was simplified during the statistical processing, and the framework has limitations that must be demonstrated by actual data in the future. However, this could be an early approach to integrating geospatial and environmental analysis with the design framework. And it can be applied to another urban area for sustainable urban models for the Anthropocene

summary Prospect-refuge theory, as a noted environment preference pattern, holds that the environment providing conditions to unimpededly see others without being seen can evoke a psychobiological pleasure for people. Although being an effective approach to understand successful and enduring emotional experience, less special attention has been paid to uncover the concrete degree of "prospect" and "refuge" properties of locations. With this background, this paper develops a computational model, Prospect-Refuge Analysis(PRA), for quantitatively measuring the diverse prospect-refuge perceptions in two-dimensional built space. Then the paper verifies the measuring effectiveness of the PRA via comparatively examining the data-perception consistency in Frank Lloyd Wright's domestic projects.

summary This paper introduces a prototype for a user-friendly, responsive toolbox for spatial accessibility analysis in data-poor environments to support urban design processes. It allows for real-time computation of several evaluation indicators, mostly focused on accessibility related measures. The proposed framework is exemplified with three real-world case studies. Each of them demonstrates one part of the workflow; data gathering and preparation, sketching and developing scenarios, and impact analysis and scenario comparison.

summary This study presents an informed city analysis methodology as a tool for evaluating the concept of walkability for the existing urban area. The aim of this study was to propose an integrative approaches enable optimization of urban design element and walkability amenities under certain walkability performance criteria. The parametric methods are being developed in three stages of modeling: 1) City data modeling; 2) Walkability scores and indicators modeling; 3) Optimization model of the urban area. In the walk score algorithm, we modified three elements that determine walk score result: Walk Score Categories, Distance Decay Function and Pedestrian Friendliness Metric. We developed the customized algorithm based on the data gathered from field observation and sample interviews to normalize and define values in the walk score algorithm. The result is a parametric model to evaluate walkability concept in a certain urban area considering quantified factors that determine walkability scores. The model furthermore seeks to optimize walkability score by assessing new amenities on an existing urban area using multi-objective optimization method that produces an integrative method of urban analysis.

summary A common understanding exists that citizens should become more involved in the design, planning, and governance of the city. Due to a lack of common platforms and difficulties in the meaningful integration of the participatory input, however, the tools and methods currently employed in citizen engagement are often ill connected to the design and governance tools and processes used by experts. In this paper we describe a Grasshopper and Rhino based approach, which allows designers to share a subset of the design space formed by parametric design variants with citizens via the online interface Beta.Speckle. In a user study we evaluated the usability of the tool as well as studied the design choices of participants, which were found to be influenced by preferences for visual order and underlying economic, social, and environmental values. For the future design of participatory exercises, it was concluded that indicators relating to citizens' values and preferences will allow for a more effective exploration of the design space and increase the meaningfulness of results.

title Computational modeling for climate change: Simulating and visualizing a resilient landscape architecture design approach

summary Coastlines are changing, wildfires are raging, cities are getting hotter, and spatial designers are charged with the task of designing to mitigate these unknowns. This research examines computational digital workflows to understand and alleviate the impacts of climate change on urban landscapes. The methodology includes two separate simulation and visualization workflows. The first workflow uses an animated particle fluid simulator in combination with geographic information systems data, Photoshop software, and three-dimensional modeling and animation software to simulate erosion and sedimentation patterns, coastal inundation, and sea level rise. The second workflow integrates building information modeling data, computational fluid dynamics simulators, and parameters from EnergyPlus and Landsat to produce typologies and strategies for mitigating urban heat island effects. The effectiveness of these workflows is demonstrated by inserting design prototypes into modeled environments to visualize their success or failure. The result of these efforts is a suite of workflows which have the potential to vastly improve the efficacy with which architects and landscape architects use existing data to address the urgency of climate change.

summary Metal joints play a relevant role in space frame constructions, being responsible for large amount of the overall material and fabrication cost. Space frames which are constructed with standardized metal joints are constrained to repetitive structures and topologies. For customized space frames, the fabrication of individual metal joints still remains a challenge. Traditional fabrication methods such as sand casting are labour intensive, while direct 3D metal printing is too expensive and slow for the large volumes needed in architecture.This research investigates the use of Binder Jetting technology to 3D print sand molds for casting bespoke metal joints in architecture. Using this approach, a large number of custom metal joints can be fabricated economically in short time. By automating the generation of the joint geometry and the corresponding mold system, an efficient digital process chain from design to fabrication is established. Several design studies for cast metal joints are presented. The approach is successfully tested on the example of a full scale space frame structure incorporating almost two hundred custom aluminum joints.

summary Computational design and fabrication have reached an accomplished level of ubiquity and proficiency in the field of architecture, in both academia and practice. Materiality driving structure, responsiveness, and spatial organization can be seen to evolve, in kind, with the capabilities to fabricate deeper material hierarchies. Such maturity of a procedural material-driven approach spurs a need to shift from the dictations of how to explorations of why material efficiencies, bespoke aesthetics, and performativity are critical to a particular architecture, requiring an examination of linkages between approach, techniques, and process. The material system defines a branch of architectural research utilizing bespoke computational techniques to generate performative material capacities that are inextricably linked to both internal and external forces and energies. This paper examines such a self-referential view to define an expanded ecological approach that integrates new modes of design agency and shift the material system from closed-loop relationship with site to open-ended reciprocation with human behavior. The critical need for this capacity is shown in applications of novel textile hybrid material systems—as sensorially-responsive environments for children with the neurological autism spectrum disorder—in ongoing research titled Social Sensory Architectures. Through engaging fabrication across all material scales, manners of elastic responsivity are shown, through a series of feasibility studies, to exhibit a capacity for children to become design agents in exploring the beneficial interrelationship of sensorimotor agency and social behavior. The paper intends to contribute a theoretical approach by which novel structural capacities of a material system can support a larger ecology of social and behavioral agency.

summary Platforms that integrate developments from multiple disciplines are becoming increasingly relevant as the complexity of different technologies increases day by day. In this context, this paper describes an integrative approach for the development of architectural projects. It portrays the benefits of applying such an approach by describing its implementation throughout the development and execution of a building demonstrator. Through increasing the agility and extending the scope of existing computational tools, multiple collaborators were empowered to generate innovative solutions across the different phases of the project´s cycle. For this purpose, novel solutions for planar segmented wood shells are showcased at different levels. First, it is demonstrated how the application of a sophisticated hollow-cassette building system allowed the optimization of material use, production time, and mounting logistics due to the modulation of the parameters of each construction element. Second, the paper discusses how the articulation of that complexity was crucial when negotiating between multiple professions, interacting with different contractors, and complying with corresponding norms. Finally, the innovative architectural features of the resulting building are described, and the accomplishments are benchmarked through comparison with typological predecessor.

summary The context of digital fabrication allows architects to reinvestigate material, process and the design decisions they entail to explore novel expression in architecture. This demands a new approach to design thinking, as well as the relevant tools to couple the form of artefacts with the process in which they are made. This paper presents a customised computational design tool developed for exploring the novel design space of Concrete Extrusion 3D Printing (CE3DP), enabling a reinterpretation of the concrete column building typology. This tool allows the designer to access generative engines such as trigonometric functions and mesh subdivision through an intuitive graphical user interface. Balancing process efficiency as understood by our industry with a strong design focus, we aim to articulate the unique architectural qualities inherent to CE3DP, energising much needed innovation in concrete technology.

summary This paper proposes a fuzzy-based approach for the automated evaluation of spatial layout configurations. Our objective is to evaluate soft and interdependent design qualities (such as connectedness, enclosure, spaciousness, continuity, adjacency, etc.), to satisfy multiple and mutually inclusive criteria, and to account for all potential and logical solutions without discarding preferable, likely or even less likely possible solutions. Using fuzzyTECH, a fuzzy logic software development tool, we devise all possible spatial relation inputs affecting physical and non-physical outputs for a given space using descriptive rule blocks. We implement this fuzzy logic system on an existing residential space to evaluate different layout alternatives. We define all linguistic input variables, output variables, and fuzzy sets, and present space-space relations using membership functions. We use the resulting database of fuzzy agents to evaluate the design of the existing residential spaces.

title A generalized framework for designing topological interlocking configurations

summary A topological interlocking configuration is an arrangement of pieces shaped in such a way that the motion of any piece is blocked by its neighbors. A variety of interlocking configurations have been proposed for convex pieces that are arranged in a planar space. Published algorithms for creating a topological interlocking configuration start from a tessellation of the plane (e.g. squares colored as a checkerboard). For each square S of one color, a plane P through each edge E is considered, tilted by a given angle ? against the tessellated plane. This induces a face F supported by P and limited by other such planes nearby. Note that E is interior to the face. By adjacency, the squares of the other color have similarly delimiting faces. This algorithm generates a topological interlocking configuration of tetrahedra or antiprisms. When checked for correctness (i.e. for no overlap), it rests on the tessellation to be of squares. If the tessellation consists of rectangles, then the algorithm fails. If the tessellation is irregular, then the tilting angle is not uniform for each edge and must be determined, in the worst case, by trial and error. In this article, we propose a method for generating topological interlocking configurations in one single iteration over the tessellation or mesh using a height value and a center point type for each tile as parameters. The required angles are a function of the given height and selected center; therefore, angle choices are not required as an initial input. The configurations generated using our method are compared against the configurations generated using the angle-choice approach. The results show that the proposed method maintains the alignment of the pieces and preserves the co-planarity of the equatorial sections of the pieces. Furthermore, the proposed method opens a path of geometric analysis for topological interlocking configurations based on non-planar tessellations.

summary The primary objective of this paper is to present a redefinition of Mixed Reality from a perspective emphasizing the relationship between users, virtuality and reality as a fundamental component. The redefinition is motivated by three primary reasons. Firstly, current literature in which Augmented Reality is the focus appears to approach Augmented Reality as an alternative to Mixed Reality. Secondly, Mixed Reality is often considered to encompass Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality rather than specifying it as a segment along the reality-virtuality continuum. Thirdly, most common definitions of Augmented Reality (AR), Augmented Virtuality (AV), Virtual Reality (VR) and Mixed Reality (MxR) in current literature are based on outdated display technologies, and a relationship between virtuality and reality, neglecting the importance of the users necessarily complicit sense of immersion from the relationship. The focus of existing definitions is thus currently technological, rather than experiential. We resolve this by redefining the continuum and MxR, taking into consideration the experiential symbiotic relationship and interaction between users, reality, and current immersive reality technologies. In addition, the paper will suggest some high-level overview of the redefinition's contextual applicability to the Virtual Heritage (VH) domain.

summary This paper examines a novel, integrated and collaborative approach to design and fabrication, enabled through Mixed Reality. In a bespoke fabrication process, the design is controlled and altered by users in holographic space, through a custom, multi-modal interface. Users input is live-streamed and channeled to 3D modelling environment,on-demand robotic fabrication and AR-guided assembly. The Holographic Interface is aimed at promoting man-machine collaboration. A bespoke pipeline translates hand gestures and audio into CAD and numeric fabrication. This enables non-professional participants engage with a plethora of novel technology. The feasibility of Mixed Reality for architectural workflow was tested through an interactive installation for the makeCity Berlin 2018 festival. Participants experienced with on-demand design, fabrication an AR-guided assembly. summary This study presents an approach for the intelligent generation of architectural layout, in which partial space inherits Chinese garden spatial features. The approach combines spatial prototype analysis and evolutionary optimization process. On one hand, from the perspective of shape grammar, this paper both analyzes and abstracts the spatial prototype that describes the spatial characteristics of Chinese gardens, including the organization system of architecture and landscape, with the spatial sequences along the tourism orientation. On the other hand, taking the design task of Lotus teahouse as an example, a typical spatial prototype is selected to develop the generative intelligent experiment to achieve the architectural layout, in which the spatial prototype is inherited. Through rule-making and parameter adjustment, the spatial prototype will eventually be transformed into a computational model based on the multi-agent system. Hence, the experiment of intelligent generation of architectural layout is carried out under the influence of the function, form and environmental factors; and a three-dimensional conceptual model that inherits the Chinese garden spatial prototype is obtained ultimately.

summary During the last decade, mass customization in developing countries has been rising. The combination of conventional methods and materials with computer numeric control technologies offers a possibility of merging established craftsmanship to the production of personalized components with mass production efficiency. This article aims to present the development of a facade component prototype as a means to prospect possibilities for mixing parametric design and digital fabrication to casting, especially in developing countries like Brazil. This is an applied research with an exploratory and constructive approach, which was a result of a graduate class structured on a research by design basis. The conceptual development and prototyping of the artifact followed iterative cycles, considering its performance, fabrication methods and feasibility. The selection of materials that are commonly used in Brazilian architecture, like concrete, facilitates the component adoption as as a facade solution. The main conclusion emphasizes the need of involvement between academia and industry for the development of innovative products and processes, and highlights different levels of mass customization to include a range of manufacturing agents, from major industries to local craftspeople.

summary As many other areas of human activity, the architectural design process has been recently shaken by Virtual Reality (VR), as it offers new ways to experience and communicate architectural space. In this paper we propose Live Coding in Virtual Reality (LCVR), a design approach that allows architects to benefit from the advantages of VR within an algorithmic design workflow. LCVR integrates a live coding solution, where the architect programs his design intent and immediately receives feedback on the changes applied to the program; and VR, which means this workflow takes place inside the virtual environment, where the architect is immersed in the model that results from the program he is concurrently updating from inside VR. In this paper we discuss the possible impacts of such an approach, as well as the most pressing implementation issues. We offer a critical analysis and comparison of the various solutions available in the context of two different programming paradigms: visual and textual.

summary This paper presents an analysis of the output, impact, use and content of 1,860 papers that were published in the CAADRIA conference proceedings over the last 20+ years (from 1996 to 2019). The applied methodology is a blend of bibliometrics, webometrics and clustering with text mining. The bibliometric analysis leads to quantitative and qualitative results on three levels: (1) author, (2) article and (3) association. The most productive authors authored over 50 papers, and the top 20% authors have over 80 % of all citations generated by CAADRIA proceedings. The overall impact of CAADRIA may be characterised by nearly 2,000 known citations and by the h-index that is 17. The webometrics based on CumInCAD.org reveals that the CAADRIA papers served over 200 k users, which is a considerable visibility for scientific CAAD output. The keywords most frequently used by authors were digital fabrication, BIM and parametric, generative, computational design. Notably, 90% of the papers' descriptors are 2-grams. This study may be useful to researchers, educators and publishers interested in CAAD.

summary This paper presents an innovative approach on designing large-scale spatial structure with automated robotic 3D-printing. The incipient design approach mainly focused on optimizing structural efficiency at an early design stage by transform the object into a discrete system, and the elements in this system contains unique structural parameters that corresponding to its topology results of stiffness distribution. Back in 2017, the design team already implemented this concept into an experimental project of Cloud Pavilion in Shanghai, China, and the 3D-printed spatial structure was partitioned into five zones represent different level of structure stiffness and filled with five kinds of unit toolpath accordingly. Through further research, an upgrade version, the project of Cloud Pavilion 2.0 is underway and will be completed in January 2019. A detailed description on innovative printing toolpath design in this project is conducted in this paper and explains how the toolpath shape effects its overall structural stiffness. This paper contributes knowledge on integrated design in the field of robotic 3D-printing and provides an alternative approach on robotic toolpath design combines with the optimized topological results.

summary This paper presents an innovative approach to the design and fabrication of three-dimensional objects from single-piece flat sheets, inspired by the origami technique of twist-closing. While in origami twist-closing is merely used to stabilize a cylindrical or spherical structure, ensuring it maintains its shape, this research investigates the potential of twist-closing as a multi-functional mechanism that also activates and controls the transformation of a planar surface into a predesigned three-dimensional form. This exploration is directed towards an intended application to stiff and brittle sheet materials that are difficult to shape through other processes. The methods we have developed draw mainly upon principles of lattice kirigami and laminar reciprocal structures. These are reflected in a workflow that integrates digital form-generation and fabrication-rationalization techniques to reference and apply these principles at every stage. Significant capabilities of the developed methodology include: (1) achievement of pseudo-double-curvature with brittle, stiff sheet materials; (2) stabilization in a 3D end-state as a frameless self-contained single-element laminar reciprocal structure—essentially a compliant mechanism; and (3) an ability to pre-encode 3D assembly constraints in a 2D cutout pattern, which guides a moldless fabrication process. The paper reviews the precedent geometric techniques and principles that comprise this method of 3D surface fabrication and describes a sample deployment of the method as applied to the design of laminar modules made of high-pressure laminate (HPL).
