summary This paper discusses the methodology and results of the Maslow's Palace workshops project, which engages with current debates surrounding the democratisation of digital urban design technology and stakeholder decision making, through the implementation of a speculative oriented approach to serious gaming. The research explores how serious games might be used to help marginalised communities consider past, future and present community experiences, reconcile dissimilar assumptions, generate social capital building and design responses and prime participants for further long term design engagement processes. Empirical material for this research was gathered from a range of case study workshops prepared with three landfill-based communities and external partners throughout 2017. Results show the approach helped participants develop shared norms, values and understandings of sensitive topics and develop ideas for future action through "collective tinkering".

summary The use of ICT-based participation tools in urban design has gained importance in the last decade. In order to enable the citizens and other stakeholders to participate in city-making processes, a wide range of ICT-enabled participatory tools, techniques, and applications have been developed.. Many studies have reported that the use of these participatory platforms has led to positive outcomes but the platforms' potentials and limits for facilitating different levels of design empowerment still remain unknown. In this context, this study aims to determine how these platforms empower citizens' engagement and identify the key factors that can facilitate better participation practices. This research analyses 25 ICT-based participation platforms by focusing on 4 key criteria:(1) their objectives, (2) the design action phases in which they are designated to be used, (3) their desired levels of design empowerment, and (4) offered functions. Our study reveals that more than three-fourth of analysed platforms still complemented by off-line participation activities. Empowering citizens to design independently is still a challenging task so just three platforms (12%) allow users to create their own plans and visions. Finally, we identify several influence factors for better ICT-based participatory design practices.

summary In this research, the goal is to develop a generating system for architectural color icons using Google Map Platform and Tensorflow-Segmentation. There has been no case of developing a system that allows users to visualize the color tendency of buildings as architectural color icons for each building element from images of various regions. It is considered meaningful to be able to create criteria for decision making in architecture and the urban design by developing a system to clarify the current state of the architectural colors. It will contribute a rise in the consciousness of landscape conservation and be essential for the design of architectures and public objects. This paper includes the explanation of development method, use experiments, and consideration of five problems among architectural color icons creation. It is assumed that the accuracy of the present system will be better as the technology improves.

summary A common understanding exists that citizens should become more involved in the design, planning, and governance of the city. Due to a lack of common platforms and difficulties in the meaningful integration of the participatory input, however, the tools and methods currently employed in citizen engagement are often ill connected to the design and governance tools and processes used by experts. In this paper we describe a Grasshopper and Rhino based approach, which allows designers to share a subset of the design space formed by parametric design variants with citizens via the online interface Beta.Speckle. In a user study we evaluated the usability of the tool as well as studied the design choices of participants, which were found to be influenced by preferences for visual order and underlying economic, social, and environmental values. For the future design of participatory exercises, it was concluded that indicators relating to citizens' values and preferences will allow for a more effective exploration of the design space and increase the meaningfulness of results.

summary The better integration of the knowledge and expertise from different disciplines into urban design and the creation of more interdisciplinary and collaborative work processes to accommodate this have been under discussion in related research for decades. Nevertheless, many barriers preventing a seamless collaborative work flow still persist. In this paper we present an experiment taking place under real-world conditions, which outlines an alternative way for more efficient collaboration by focusing on the design process rather than the result and thus providing additional insights for all parties involved. A parametric design approach was chosen to help mediate between the areas of expertise involved supporting the smooth transition of data, the mutual translation of design feedback and better informed design decisions as an outcome. The case study presented in this paper exemplifies the application of the approach in a design project on masterplan scale integrating inputs from urban design, economics and mobility experts; and shows the opportunity for transforming the formerly segregated design process into a platform for transparent negotiations.

summary In the past decade, urban researchers have paid significant attention to the emergence of computer science and urban planning. According to the literature, social media as a pool of real-time citizen feedback can be investigated to inform smart city synergies. However, the success factors of such an approach have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, various factors were derived from an extensive literature review to create an efficient e-participation platform. It is explained how our proposed platform 1) complies to the data protection regulations 2) uses advanced text analysis and natural language processing (NLP) tools to identify opinions and emotions 3) maintains persistent communication between citizens and city planners 4) incorporates creative visualisation techniques 5) is informative for its target audience 6) takes into consideration the socio-cultural diversity and 7) can be used as an informing tool in combination with offline methods of participation.

summary This paper discusses the design of an online digital participation campaign, developed as an academic research project in Singapore. In order to develop appropriate exercises which fitted the tool and the context, we addressed several questions: how can online participation tools maintain a negotiation and education power? What data generated by citizens, in the form of a design proposals, is useful for urban design? We created two different exercises, at different scales: one exercise asking people to design proposals with functional blocks and one where citizens could decide the equipment and furniture in a public space. For each exercise we discuss the scale, the elements, the educating and mediating impact, but also the way we intended to use the gathered local knowledge in urban design. The exercise did not receive the expected contributions, gathering little attention from internet users. More results were obtained using an offline experimental setup. In conclusion, we reconsider the weakest points of the design in a critical analysis and provide direction for future online participation tools.

summary Utilizing digital method to establish a multi-agent simulation platform and establish an interactive simulation between site elements and agents particles behavior. In this study, urban space could not have the absolute frozen state, it is always evolving and self-renewing. We hope to integrate such unstable relationships into urban design methods and programs. By constructing various type of agent particles and the interaction behaviors, we not only directly simulate the flow of people or traffic, but also simulate the public space relationship such as line of sight space, waterfront space accessibility, commercial supporting function layout, and historical and cultural block attraction from a more abstract level. From macro to micro, the result of spatial simulation has an intrinsic close causal relationship with the site's landform, building status, site function, and planning pattern, can be the basis for space generation.

title Computational modeling for climate change: Simulating and visualizing a resilient landscape architecture design approach

summary Coastlines are changing, wildfires are raging, cities are getting hotter, and spatial designers are charged with the task of designing to mitigate these unknowns. This research examines computational digital workflows to understand and alleviate the impacts of climate change on urban landscapes. The methodology includes two separate simulation and visualization workflows. The first workflow uses an animated particle fluid simulator in combination with geographic information systems data, Photoshop software, and three-dimensional modeling and animation software to simulate erosion and sedimentation patterns, coastal inundation, and sea level rise. The second workflow integrates building information modeling data, computational fluid dynamics simulators, and parameters from EnergyPlus and Landsat to produce typologies and strategies for mitigating urban heat island effects. The effectiveness of these workflows is demonstrated by inserting design prototypes into modeled environments to visualize their success or failure. The result of these efforts is a suite of workflows which have the potential to vastly improve the efficacy with which architects and landscape architects use existing data to address the urgency of climate change.

summary The project investigates the possibility of visualizing open source data in a 3D interactive virtual environment. We propose a new tool, 'ViBe'. We programmed 'ViBe' using Unity for its compatibility with HTC VIVE glasses for virtual reality (VR). ViBe offers an abstract visualization of open source data in a 3D interactive environment. The ViBe environment entails three main topics a) inhabitants, b) environmental factors, and c) land-use; acting as representatives of parameters for cities and urban design. Berlin serves as a case study. The data sets used are divided according to Berlin's twelve administrative districts. The user immerses into the virtual environment where they can choose, using the HTC Vive controllers, which district (or Berlin as a whole) they want information for and which topics they want to be visualized, and they can also teleport back and forth between the different districts. The goal of this project is to represent different urban parameters an abstract simulation where we correlate the corresponding data sets. By experiencing the city through visualized data, ViBe aims to provide the user with a clearer perspective onto the city and the relationship between its urban parameters. ViBe is designed for adults and kids, urban planners, politicians and real estate developers alike.

summary This paper introduces a novel framework for urban analysis that leverages computational techniques, along with established urban research methods, to study how people use urban public space. Through three case studies in different urban locations in Europe and the US, it demonstrates how recent machine learning and computer vision techniques may assist us in producing unprecedently detailed portraits of the relative influence of urban and environmental variables on people’s use of public space. The paper further discusses the potential of this framework to enable empirically-enriched forms of urban and social analysis with applications in urban planning, design, research, and policy.

summary Rural Vitalization being a nation-wide policy for China in the following five years, it is becoming even more important to preserve and conserve the village heritage, especially with the global background of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) involvement. This research reviews on the existing and potential methods which has been or could be used to better understand the rural built environment in the new data age, and proposes an interactive message platform named Rural Information Modelling (RIM) which could collect, storage, analyze and display the various message concerning the village heritage, especially the morphological, cognitive and behavioural information. With the help of RIM, stakeholders can better interact with the rural environment, and better negotiate with each other, leading to a more objective and rational construction process, which could express the willingness of both the outside architects, urban planners and visitors, and the in situ villagers and government.

summary We have seen increasing expectations from our cities: as we aim to enable them to become smarter, more efficient and more sustainable. Having these goals makes the urban designing process increasingly complex. Undertaking contemporary urban design and analysis requires a rounded and inclusive approach. In the discussion relating to the smart city there has been attention to infrastructure technology solutions. But ways of estimating the success of more comprehensive urban design interventions is also extremely important. In response to these needs, digital urban design simulation and analysis software packages have been developed to help urban designers model and evaluate their designs before they take shape in the real world. We analyse, and reflect on the current aids available, classifying the urban design software packages which were used in the body of knowledge. In addition, more influential urban design software packages have been reviewed to figure out in which stages of the urban design process, they have applied. This review also helpful for software developer to understand which software packages more useful and which ones need to be developed in future.

summary According to one of the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2018), it is important for cities to be inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Therefore, it is necessary to value pedestrians and consequently active mobility, giving priority to the concepts of the Transportation Oriented Development (TOD) methodology. Although the Master Plan (BELO HORIZONTE, 2019) proposes that areas located in regional centralities are enhancing active mobility, can residents actually benefit from these resources at a walkable distance to access basic services? Thus, the aim of this research is to utilize digital technologies to visualize, analyze, and assess pedestrians' access conditions to commerce and basic services, identifying areas lacking infrastructure. The goal is for the model to serve as a reference for the development of public policies. To achieve this, metadata was used for parametric modeling to study walkability in the peripheral region of the city of Belo Horizonte.

summary We present a tool intended to enable non-expert users to apply and manipulate a shape grammar, SMUG, which encodes the urban design of informal settlements such as favelas. Such tool, the Interpreter, was developed considering that students would be its main users, and therefore we consider this grammar implementation to potentially be a multipurpose pedagogical tool since it supports conveying knowledge about urban design, shape grammars and parametric modeling using Grasshopper. This paper focuses on the development of the Interpreter and discusses the results of its use in a design studio, which can better inform subsequent iteration as well as other courses and schools.

summary In this research, we attempt to develop a tool which integrates certain common geographic information from OpenStreetMap and OpenTopography into Grasshopper. We name it as OSMKIT temporarily. Besides, in order to make the integration in the design process easier, this tool includes the bilateral conversion function of coordinate in Rhinoceros 3D and the coordinate of the World Geodetic System. These characteristics bring about several possibilities for further usage. This paper contains explanations of functions and examples. For instance, it can be employed for data visualization on a map when these data contain coordinate information. Additionally, since this tool is simple and intuitive to convert points into GPS coordinates, it can make users plan drone for photogrammetry and deal with other related tasks on the rhinoceros 3D interface, helping them to gain most current urban models. Moreover, architects or designers can be not only users but also contributors for open source map system such as OpenStreetMap; the process of sharing the mode which user measure is demonstrated in this paper. To sum up, this coordinate system based tool is designed to be multifunctional and suitable for interdisciplinary usages in grasshopper.

summary Shape of built environment and image of cities are significantly influenced by environmental factors such as access to natural light, air temperature and wind. Adequate quantity of daylight in building interiors is important for occupant wellbeing and energy saving. In Estonia minimum quantity of daylight is required by building standards. Wind speed increased by urban environment at northern latitudes can significantly reduce pedestrian perceived temperature during winter inducing strong cold stress. This paper presents a method for the integration of parametric modeling and environmental simulations to analyze interiors and exteriors comfort of tower building cluster variations in different urban areas in Tallinn. Optimal pattern characteristics such as buildings distance and alignment favoring improvement of interiors daylight and decrease of pedestrian cold stress are presented and discussed.

summary For the built environment's transformation we are confronted with complex dynamics connected to economic, ecologic and demographic change (Czerkauer-Yamu et al., 2013; Yamu, 2014). In general, cities are complex systems being a "heterogeneous mosaic" of a variety of cultures and functions, characterised by diverging perceptions and interests (ibid). The juxtaposed perceptions and interests in relation to ongoing spatial processes of change create a particularly complex situation. Thus, for planning processes we are in need of approaches that are able to cope not only with the urban complexity but also allow for participatory processes to empower citizens. This paper presents the approach of using Digital Twins in virtual reality (VR) for civic engagement in urban planning, enriched with quantitative and qualitative empirical data as one promising approach to tackle not only the complexity of cities but also involve citizens in the planning process.

summary The paper will give an overview of our experiments in the past years in developing different interfaces and workflows for the use of low cost Head Mounted Displays (HMD) for Virtual Reality solution. We are mainly interested in using VR tools for designers in the early phases of their design. In our opinion VR tools can help to bring back a better understanding of space and scale which have been lost a little bit in the last century with the change from analogue to digital tools. After teaching architectural and urban design for many years we can clearly say that this effect is still ongoing and it is time that we develop digital tools that try to reverses thi effect. We will then concentrate within this paper on discussing some aspects of data reduction that are important to be able to use these tools in the design process. We are also showing how we use our interfaces presenting some results of student projects for a design in Hong Kong and the strategies and methods for using VR for a ongoing work on a project about the establishment of a so called "bicycle highway" in the city of Graz in Austria.
