summary Collaborative Robots, or Cobots, bring new possibilities for human-machine interaction within the fabrication process, allowing each actor to contribute with their specific capabilities. However creative interaction brings unexpected changes, obstacles, complexities and non-linearities which are encountered in real time and cannot be predicted in advance. This paper presents an experimental methodology for robotic path planning using Machine Learning. The focus of this methodology is obstacle avoidance. A neural network is deployed, providing a relationship between the robot's pose and its surroundings, thus allowing for motion planning and obstacle avoidance, directly integrated within the design environment. The method is demonstrated through a series of case-studies. The method combines haptic teaching with machine learning to create a task specific dataset, giving the robot the ability to adapt to obstacles without being explicitly programmed at every instruction. This opens the door to shifting to robotic applications for construction in unstructured environments, where adapting to the singularities of the workspace, its occupants and activities presents an important computational hurdle today.

summary In this paper, we are aiming to present a methodology for generation, manipulation and form finding of structural typologies using variational autoencoders, a machine learning model based on neural networks. We are giving a detailed description of the neural network architecture used as well as the data representation based on the concept of a 3D-canvas with voxelized wireframes. In this 3D-canvas, the input geometry of the building typologies is represented through their connectivity map and subsequently augmented to increase the size of the training set. Our variational autoencoder model then learns a continuous latent distribution of the input data from which we can sample to generate new geometry instances, essentially hybrids of the initial input geometries. Finally, we present the results of these computational experiments and lay out the conclusions as well as outlook for future research in this field.

summary In this study, we developed a method for generating omnidirectional depth images from corresponding omnidirectional RGB images of streetscapes by learning each pair of omnidirectional RGB and depth images created by computer graphics using pix2pix. Then, the models trained with different series of images shot under different site and weather conditions were applied to Google street view images to generate depth images. The validity of the generated depth images was then evaluated visually. In addition, we conducted experiments to evaluate Google street view images using multiple participants. We constructed a model that estimates the evaluation value of these images with and without the depth images using the learning-to-rank method with deep convolutional neural network. The results demonstrate the extent to which the generalization performance of the streetscape evaluation model changes depending on the presence or absence of depth images.

summary The field of generative architectural design has explored a wide range of approaches in the automation of design production, but these approaches have demonstrated limited artificial intelligence. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) are a leading deep generative model that use deep neural networks (DNNs) to learn from a set of training examples in order to create new design instances with a degree of flexibility and fidelity that outperform competing generative approaches. Their application to generative tasks in architecture, however, has been limited. This research contributes new knowledge on the use of GANs for architectural plan generation and analysis in relation to the work of specific architects. Specifically, GANs are trained to synthesize architectural plans from the work of the architect Le Corbusier and are used to provide analytic insight. Experiments demonstrate the efficacy of different augmentation techniques that architects can use when working with small datasets.

summary Brickwork is the oldest construction method still in use. Digital technologies, in turn, enabled new methods of representation and automation for bricklaying. While automation explored different approaches, representation was limited to declarative methods, as parametric filling algorithms. Alternatively, this work proposes a framework for automated brickwork using a machine learning model based on image-to-image translation (Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks). The framework consists of creating a dataset, training a model for each bond, and converting the output images into vectorial data for robotic assembly. Criteria such as: reaching wall boundary accuracy, avoidance of unsupported bricks, and brick's position accuracy were individually evaluated for each bond. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework fulfils boundary filling and respects overall bonding structural rules. Size accuracy demonstrated inferior performance for the scale tested. The association of this method with 'self-calibrating' robots could overcome this problem and be easily implemented for on-site.

summary The gradual rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing visibility among many research disciplines affected Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD). Architectural deep learning (DL) approaches are being developed and published on a regular basis, such as retrieval (Sharma et al. 2017) or design style manipulation (Newton 2019; Silvestre et al. 2016). However, there seems to be no method to evaluate highly constrained spatial configurations for specific architectural domains (such as housing or office buildings) based on basic architectural principles and everyday practices. This paper introduces an automatic constraint-based consistency checker to evaluate the coherency of semantic spatial configurations of housing construction using a small set of design principles to evaluate our DL approaches. The consistency checker informs about the overall performance of a spatial configuration followed by whether it is open/closed and the constraints it didn't satisfy. This paper deals with the relation of spaces processed as mathematically formalized graphs contrary to existing model checking software like Solibri.

summary Sky view factor (SVF) is the ratio of radiation received by a planar surface from the sky to that received from the entire hemispheric radiating environment, in the past 20 years, it was more applied to urban-climatic areas such as urban air temperature analysis. With the urbanization and the development of cities, SVF has been paid more and more attention on as the important parameter in urban construction and city planning area because of increasing building coverage ratio to promote urban forms and help creating a more comfortable and sustainable urban residential building environment to citizens. Therefore, efficient, low cost, high precision, easy to operate, rapid building-wide SVF estimation method is necessary. In the field of image processing, semantic segmentation based on deep learning have attracted considerable research attention. This study presents a new method to estimate the SVF of residential environment by constructing a deep learning network for segmenting the sky areas from 360-degree camera images. As the result of this research, an easy-to-operate estimation system for SVF based on high efficiency sky label mask images database was developed.

This paper presents a set of experiments on the dynamic control of the heat deflection of thermoplastics in searching for a new 3D printing method with the dynamic behaviour of PLA and with a comprehensive workflow utilizing mechanic automation, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary This research presents the development of a construction system for a solid expanded cork building envelope. The inspiration for this research is the “Cork House” built in 2019 by Matthew Barnett Howland and Oliver Wilton, who developed a Cork Construction Kit for a monolithic dry-jointed cork structure. The goal of this research is to analyze and develop different varieties of construction methods for a dry-joined cork building by combining and applying traditional masonry techniques. The objective is to generate a material-based design for cork construction elements trough prototyping and using a selection of digital tools such as 3D modeling and 3D printing. Expanded cork is a 100% plant-based material which, if applied correctly, has the capacity to be used as a load bearing, insulating and protective structure all at once. It has almost no environmental impact and is completely compostable. To maintain the material's compostable property, this construction system has to be developed without any kind of binders or mortar. Additionally, this more reduced and simplified form of construction will not only make it possible to build without any specific expertise, but at the same time ensure resources to be reused or composted at the end of building life.

summary Computing has been increasingly employed in design environments, primarily to perform calculations and logical decisions faster than humans could, enabling tasks that would be impossible or too time-consuming to execute manually. Various studies highlight the use of digital tools and technologies in diverse methods, such as parametric modeling and evolutionary algorithms, for exploring and optimizing alternatives in architecture, design, and engineering (Martino, 2015; Fagundes, 2019). Currently, there is a growing emergence of intelligent models that increasingly integrate computers into the design process. Demonstrating great potential for initial ideation, artificial intelligence (AI) models like Shap-E (Nichol et al., 2023) by OpenAI stand out. Although this model falls short of state-of-the-art sample quality, it is among the most efficient orders of magnitude for generating three-dimensional models through AI interfaces, offering practical balance for certain use cases. Thus, aiming to explore this gap, the presented study proposes an innovative design agency framework by employing Shap-E connected with parametric modeling in the design process. The generation tool has shown promising results; through generations of synthetic views conditioned by text captions, its final output is a mesh. However, due to the lack of topological information in models generated by Shap-E, we propose to fill this gap by transferring data to a parametric three-dimensional surface modeling environment. Consequently, this interaction's use aims to enable the transformation of the mesh into quantifiable surfaces, subject to collection and optimization of dimensional data of objects. Moreover, this work seeks to enable the creation of artificial databases through formal categorization of parameterized outputs using the K-means algorithm. For this purpose, the study methodologically orients itself in a four-step exploratory experimental process: (1) creation of models generated by Shap-E in a pressing manner; (2) use of parametric modeling to internalize models into the Grasshopper environment; (3) generation of optimized alternatives using the evolutionary algorithm (Biomorpher); (4) and classification of models using the K-means algorithm. Thus, the presented study proposes, through an environment of internalization and classification of models generated by the Shap-E tool, to contribute to the construction of a new design agency methodology in the decision-making process of design. So far, this research has resulted in the generation and classification of a diverse set of three-dimensional shapes. These shapes are grouped for potential applications in machine learning, in addition to providing insights for the refinement and detailed exploration of forms.

summary Building performance simulation tools have the potential for aiding the decision-making process in early design stages of an architectural project. As traditional simulation tools are based on a static design and adaptive façades encompass an envisioned movement of construction elements, there is a lack of supporting tools and workflows that can correctly evaluate the performance of such building envelopes at an early stage. The presented ongoing research focuses on developing efficient parametric performance-based approaches for assessing the energy consumption in buildings with adaptive façades, combining generative architectural design and performance analysis in a seamless workflow. To this end, we combine a new algorithmic design research tool with the well-established whole-building simulation engine EnergyPlus. The purpose of linking both tools lies in the possibility of generating and simulating models with adaptive façade mechanisms through a single script, evaluating and using the simulation results to adjust the model's parameters and develop optimized control strategies.

summary Modern communication between built environment professionals are governed by the effective exchange of digital models, blueprints and technical drawings. However, the increasing quantity of such digital files, in conjunction with inconsistent filing systems, increases the potential for human-error upon their look-up and retrieval. Further, current methods are manual, thus slow and resource intensive. Evidently, the architectural, engineering and construction (AEC) industry lacks an automated classification system capable of systematically identifying and categorising different drawings. To intercede, we aim to investigate artificially intelligent solutions capable of automatically identifying and retrieving a wide set of AEC files from a company's resource library. We present a convolutional neural network (CNN) model capable of processing large sets of technical drawings - such as sections, plans and elevations - and recognise their individual patterns and features, ultimately minimising laboriousness.

summary Exploring sustainable urban development models for building material recycling is essential to achieving net-zero emissions. This study develops a Building Material Stock (BMS) prediction model, focusing on concrete and steel, and maps embodied carbon by identifying geographic hotspots for material recycling and flow. Specifically, to predict future demolition and construction trends at Singapore’s Housing Development Board (HDB), a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN)-based model is utilised to generate distributional images of HDB developments. A categorised map of construction sites from 2019 is used as input to generate the predicted public housing layout for 2024. These predictions are then integrated with material intensity (MI) and carbon emission factors to estimate floor area requirements and potential construction activity locations for future HDB projects. This approach establishes a closed-loop system aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), supporting material inventory and flow management, enhancing resource reuse efficiency, and mitigating urban development’s environmental impact. Moreover, the findings provide valuable insights for the Singapore government and industry organisations to expand the adoption of PPVC technology and circular economy practices in HDB development.

summary Point cloud processing has come a long way in the past years. Advances in computer vision (CV) and machine learning (ML) have enabled its automated recognition and processing. However, few of those developments have made it through to the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. Here, optimizing those workflows can reduce time spent on early-phase projects, which otherwise could be spent on developing innovative design solutions. Simplifying the processing of building point cloud scans makes it more accessible and therefore, usable for design, planning and decision-making. Furthermore, automated processing can also ensure that point clouds are processed consistently and accurately, reducing the potential for human error. This work is part of a larger effort to optimize early-phase design processes to promote the reuse of vacant buildings. It focuses on technical solutions to automate the reconstruction of point clouds into a digital twin as a simplified solid 3D element model. In this paper, various ML approaches, among others KPConv Thomas et al. (2019), ShapeConv Cao et al. (2021) and Mask-RCNN He et al. (2017), are compared in their ability to apply semantic as well as instance segmentation to point clouds. Further it relies on the S3DIS Armeni et al. (2017), NYU v2 Silberman et al. (2012) and Matterport Ramakrishnan et al. (2021) data sets for training. Here, the authors aim to establish a workflow that reduces the effort for users to process their point clouds and obtain object-based models. The findings of this research show that although pure point cloud-based ML models enable a greater degree of flexibility, they incur a high computational cost. We found, that using RGB-D images for classifications and segmentation simplifies the complexity of the ML model but leads to additional requirements for the data set. These can be mitigated in the initial process of capturing the building or by extracting the depth data from the point cloud.

summary This paper discusses the design of an online digital participation campaign, developed as an academic research project in Singapore. In order to develop appropriate exercises which fitted the tool and the context, we addressed several questions: how can online participation tools maintain a negotiation and education power? What data generated by citizens, in the form of a design proposals, is useful for urban design? We created two different exercises, at different scales: one exercise asking people to design proposals with functional blocks and one where citizens could decide the equipment and furniture in a public space. For each exercise we discuss the scale, the elements, the educating and mediating impact, but also the way we intended to use the gathered local knowledge in urban design. The exercise did not receive the expected contributions, gathering little attention from internet users. More results were obtained using an offline experimental setup. In conclusion, we reconsider the weakest points of the design in a critical analysis and provide direction for future online participation tools.

summary The paper proposes an alternative way to present architectural information, using color filters - specifically RGB lenses - as an interface to emphasize or reveal the internal structure or hidden logic of an architectural artifact. In an interplay of analogue and digital techniques, it employs rules of color blocking in order to highlight certain aspects of complex buildings, urban plans, or interiors, which cannot be discovered using conventional visualization methods. In this research, the authors developed an interactive RGB lens-interface and techniques for superimposed color visualizations that can be used for an enhanced visualization of the internal structure of a building. By applying physical or digital color lenses, viewers can perceive individual layers of project visualizations, in order to understand certain tectonic or construction logics, such as skin, structure or infrastructure. Based on existing bibliography, the paper presents the workflow from drawing, 3D model or photograph to RGB visualization, through a series of test case scenarios applicable to the field of architecture and design.

title Towards encoding shape features with visual event-related potential based brain–computer interface for generative design

summary This article will focus on abstracting and generalising a well-studied paradigm in visual, event-related potential based brain–computer interfaces, for the spelling of characters forming words, into the visually encoded discrimination of shape features forming design aggregates. After identifying typical technologies in neuroscience and neuropsychology of high interest for integrating fast cognitive responses into generative design and proposing the machine learning model of an ensemble of linear classifiers in order to tackle the challenging features that electroencephalography data carry, it will present experiments in encoding shape features for generative models by a mechanism of visual context updating and the computational implementation of vision as inverse graphics, to suggest that discriminative neural phenomena of event-related potentials such as P300 may be used in a visual articulation strategy for modelling in generative design.

summary Artificial Neural Networks (NN) have become ubiquitous across disciplines due to their high performance in modeling the real world to execute complex tasks in the wild. This paper presents a computational design approach that uses the internal representations of deep vision neural networks to generate and transfer stylistic form edits to both 2D floor plans and building sections. The main aim of this paper is to demonstrate and interrogate a design technique based on deep learning. The discussion includes aspects of machine learning, 2D to 2D style transfers, and generative adversarial processes. The paper examines the meaning of agency in a world where decision making processes are defined by human/machine collaborations (Figure 1), and their relationship to aspects of a Posthuman design ecology. Taking cues from the language used by experts in AI, such as Hallucinations, Dreaming, Style Transfer, and Vision, the paper strives to clarify the position and role of Artificial Intelligence in the discipline of Architecture.

summary We present an approach for computer-aided generation of different variations of floor plans during the early phases of conceptual design in architecture. The early design phases are mostly characterized by the processes of inspiration gaining and search for contextual help in order to improve the building design at hand. The generation method described in this work uses the novel as well as established artificial intelligence methods, namely, generative adversarial nets and case-based reasoning, for creation of possible evolutions of the current design based on the most similar previous designs. The main goal of this approach is to provide the designer with information on how the current floor plan can evolve over time in order to influence the direction of the design process. The work described in this paper is part of the methodology FLEA (Find, Learn, Explain, Adapt) whose task is to provide a holistic structure for support of the early conceptual phases in architecture. The approach is implemented as the adaptation component of the framework MetisCBR that is based on FLEA.
