summary To allow non-designers' involvement in design projects new methods are needed. Co-design gives the same opportunity to all the multidisciplinary participants to co-create ideas simultaneously. Nevertheless, current co-design processes involving such users tend to limit their contribution to the proposal of basic design ideas only through brainstorming. The co-design approach needs to be enhanced by a properly suited representational ecosystem supporting active participation and by conscious use of structured verbal exchanges giving awareness of the creative process. In this respect, we developed two social virtual reality co-design systems, and a co-design verbal exchange methodology to favour participants' awareness of the co-creative process. By using such representations and verbal exchanges, participants could co-create with more ease by benefiting from being informed of the process and from the collective immersion, empowering their participation. This paper presents the rationale behind this approach of using Social VR in co-design and the feedback of three co-design workshops.

summary Current computer-aided-design tools tend to focus on technical descriptions of objects and processes, while disregarding the agency of the designer in the creative process. This research shifts the focus to explore how computational tools could embrace the designer’s perception and trigger design exploration. In this direction, Pattern Mapping is presented as a prototypical software for the designing, making, and learning of a geometric material system: free-form surfaces created by the deformation of thin aluminum with auxetic-pattern slits. Along with the development of the software, the paper reports on a new methodology towards visual exploration in computational tools. Texture mapping—a computer-graphics algorithm—is utilized to bridge intuitive visualizations of form and materiality with geometric analysis. Informed by recent studies on design creativity, visual perception, and a precedent of an artist’s workflow, the proposed software facilitates learning through multiple modes of representations and drawing-like operations. Ultimately, Pattern Mapping is a provocation for the fusion of computational analysis with perception, drawing, and making.

summary Nowadays Virtual Reality application are mostly used for the presentation and discussion of ideas. To enhance the discussion / creative process, participants require the possibility to make changes to the presentation. Similar to the established processes (e.g. model and sketch) a simultaneous editing of several users will occur in the virtual environment, what leads to problems of user comfort. Such issues are explored in the filed of Workspace Awareness. Possibilities for improving workspace awareness for interactive collaboration in virtual worlds were investigated within an interdisciplinary research project between the fields of computer science and architecture. The basis for this research is the development of various test scenarios, taking into account the requirements of the urban planning context of architecture.

summary The experimental work of Antoni Gaudí and Frei Otto have been the precedents of what is currently called form-finding, a methodology based on rules and physical forces of nature that promotes principles of transformation as a result of the relationship between form, material and structure. This text shows the first results of the research titled as Form-finding methodology as strategy for formative research in industrial design education, with an empirical-analytical approach through action-research based method and using collaborative-participatory tools. As a result of the analysis of different cases in the first stage of the research, a basic methodological proposal is made, this methodological proposal is aimed to find new research possibilities for the identification of morphological characteristics to be used in design projects in the early creative phases (ideation and experimentation); the methodological proposal stages are the following: selection of technique, design of the experimentation, experimentation, analysis and discussion.

summary Design strategies that employ digital and material imprecision to achieve esthetic innovation exhibit high potential to transform the current precision-oriented practices of computation and digital fabrication in architecture. However, such strategies are still in their infancy. We present a design method facilitating intentionally-imprecise esthetic explorations within the framework of digital design and robotic single-point incremental forming. Our method gives access to the esthetic fine-tuning of molds from which architectural objects are cast. Semi-precise computational operations of extending, limiting, deepening and shallowing the geometrical deformations of the mold through robot toolpath fine-tuning are enabled by a digital toolkit featuring parametric modeling, surface curvature analyses, photogrammetry, digital photography and bitmap image retouching and painting. Our method demonstrates the shift of focus from geometric accuracy and control of material behaviors towards intentionally-imprecise digital explorations that yield novel esthetic features of architectural designs. By demonstrating the results of applying our method in the context of an exploration-driven design process, we argue that imprecision can be equally valid to accuracy, opening a vast, excitingly unknown territory for material-mediated esthetic explorations within digital fabrication. Such explorations can interestingly alter the esthetic canons and computational design methods of digital architecture in the nearest future.

summary Architecture does not exist in a vacuum. Its cultural, conceptual, and aesthetic agendas are constantly influenced by other visual and artistic disciplines ranging from film, photography, painting and sculpture to fashion, graphic and industrial design. The formal qualities of the cultural zeitgeist are perpetually influencing contemporary architectural aesthetics. In this paper, we aim to introduce a radical yet methodical approach toward regulating the relationship between human agency and computational form-making by using Machine Learning (ML) as a conceptual design tool for interdisciplinary collaboration and engagement. Through the use of a highly calibrated and customized ML systems that can classify and iterate stylistic approaches that exist outside the disciplinary boundaries of architecture, the technique allows for machine intelligence to design, coordinate, randomize, and iterate external formal and aesthetic qualities as they relate to pattern, color, proportion, hierarchy, and formal language. The human engagement in this design process is limited to the initial curation of input data in the form of image repositories of non-architectural disciplines that the Machine Learning system can extrapolate from, and consequently in regulating and choosing from the iterations of images the Artificial Neural Networks are capable of producing. In this process the architect becomes a curator that samples and streamlines external cultural influences while regulating their significance and weight in the final design. By questioning the notion of human agency in the design process and providing creative license to Artificial Intelligence in the conceptual design phase, we aim to develop a novel approach toward human-machine collaboration that rejects traditional notions of disciplinary autonomy and streamlines the influence of external aesthetic disciplines on contemporary architectural production.

title Investigating the Role of Students’ Representation Use Patterns in Spatial Thinking

summary Teaching spatial thinking explicitly helps students develop spatial abilities. In this paper, we present our initial findings from an experiment that explored how first year students who successfully completed an introductory spatial thinking course, demonstrated their use of three design representations: sketching, digital and physical modeling. Students were asked to solve a design problem requiring spatial thinking at the same level of complexity as their course project. Video data from twelve participants were analyzed and results from an independent expert panel review of students’ solutions, and use of representations were compiled. Our results show high variability in both the quality of students’ solutions and their use of the three modes of representation. We discovered many students used embodied actions in solving the spatial problem and explaining solutions. These results will inform a revision of our course and curriculum supporting spatial thinking in undergraduate design students.

title Pen-and-paper versus digital sketching in architectural design education

summary This study aimed to compare and evaluate the digital-based sketching versus conventional pen-and-paper sketching through conducting an experiment via protocol study in educational field. To this aim, the linkography analysis technique was used to obatin the related data from the protocol study. Linkography technique allows analyzing design as a system and is capable of tracing the design ideas and their connections; therefore, it facilitated the purposes of the current study. The results demonstrated that designers had a richer design process and more opportunities for generating ideas in the pen-and-paper sketching versus digital sketching. Furthermore, the designers’ performance in the digital media with two-dimensional sketching software was more satisfactory than the digital session with three-dimensional sketching software. However, digital media encouraged designers to make more integration among the ideas.

summary The artificial intelligence methods, such as case-based reasoning and artificial neural networks were already applied to the task of architectural design support in a multitude of specific approaches and tools. However, modern AI trends, such as Explainable AI (XAI), and additional features, such as providing contextual suggestions for the next step of the design process, were rarely considered an integral part of these approaches or simply not available. In this paper, we present an application of a distributed AI-based methodology FLEA (Find, Learn, Explain, Adapt) to the task of room configuration during the early conceptual phases of architectural design. The implementation of the methodology in the framework MetisCBR applies CBR-based methods for retrieval of similar floor plans to suggest possibly inspirational designs and to explain the returned results with specific explanation patterns. Furthermore, it makes use of a farm of recurrent neural networks to suggest contextually suitable next configuration steps and to present design variations that show how the designs may evolve in the future. The flexibility of FLEA allows for variational use of its components in order to activate the currently required modules only. The methodology was initialized during the basic research project Metis (funded by German Research Foundation) during which the architectural semantic search patterns and a family of corresponding floor plan representations were developed. FLEA uses these patterns and representations as the base for its semantic search, explanation, next step suggestion, and adaptation components. The methodology implementation was iteratively tested during quantitative evaluations and user studies with multiple floor plan datasets.

After discussing the relations between artificial intelligence and the broader question of automation in architecture, this article focuses on the future of the interaction between humans and intelligent machines. The way machines will understand architecture may be very different from the reading of humans. Since the Renaissance, the architectural discipline has defined itself as a conversation between different stakeholders, the designer, but also the clients and the artisans in charge of the realization of projects. How can this conversation be adapted to the rise of intelligent machines? Such a question is not only a matter of design effectiveness. It is inseparable from expressive and artistic issues. Just like the fascination of modernist architecture for industrialization was intimately linked to the quest for a new poetics of the discipline, our contemporary interest for artificial intelligence has to do with questions regarding the creative core of the architectural discipline.

summary The Architecture of ScarCity Game is a board game used as a pedagogical tool that challenges architecture students by involving them in a series of experimental design sessions to understand the design process of scarcity and the actual relation between the craft and the digital. This means "pragmatic delivery processes and material constraints, where the exchange between the artisan of handmade, representing local skills and technology of the digitally conceived is explored" (Huang 2013). The game focuses on understanding the different variables of the crafted design process of traditional communities under conditions of scarcity (Michel and Bevan 1992). This requires first analyzing the spatial environmental model of interaction, available human and natural resources, and the dynamic relationship of these variables in a digital era. In the first stage (Pre-Agency), the game set the concept of the craft by limiting students design exploration from a minimum possible perspective developing locally available resources and techniques. The key elements of the design process of traditional knowledge communities have to be identified (Preez 1984). In other words, this stage is driven by limited resources + chance + contingency. In the second stage (Post-Agency) students taking the architects´ role within this communities, have to speculate and explore the interface between the craft (local knowledge and low technological tools), and the digital represented by computation data, new technologies available and construction. This means the introduction of strategy + opportunity + chance as part of the design process. In this sense, the game has a life beyond its mechanics. This other life challenges the participants to exploit the possibilities of breaking the actual boundaries of design. The result is a tool to challenge conventional methods of teaching and leaning controlling a prescribed design process. It confronts the rules that professionals in this field take for granted. The game simulates a 'fake' reality by exploring in different ways with surveyed information. As a result, participants do not have anything 'real' to lose. Instead, they have all the freedom to innovate and be creative.

summary It is widely held that sometime around 2006, the World Wide Web as we knew it mutated into Web 2.0. This colloquial label signaled a shift from an Internet designed for us to an Internet designed by us. Nowhere was this more explicitly stated than in Time Magazine’s 2006 Person of the Year selection: You. More than a decade later, Internet browsers have evolved into ubiquitous interfaces accessible from mobile devices, tablet computers, public kiosks, workstations, laptops, etc. It would, therefore, not be an overstatement to say that the browser is the most widespread content canvas in the world. Designers frequently use web browsers for their ability to exhibit and organize content. They are the sites for portfolios, announcements, magazines, and at times, discussions. But despite its flexibility and rich infrastructure, rarely is the browser used to generate design elements. Thanks to advanced web development languages like JavaScript and open-source code libraries, such as p5.JS, Matter.JS, and Three.JS, browsers now support interactive and spatial content. Typically, these tools are used to generate gimmicks or visual effects, such as the parallax illusion or the infinite scroll. But if we perceive the browser as a timebased picture plane, we can immediately recognize its architectonic potential. This paper puts forth a method for engaging the creative potential of web-based media and Internet browsers. Through example projects, I argue that the Internet browser is a highly complex spatial plane that warrants more architectural analysis and experimentation.

summary This paper proposes software reconstruction as a method to shed new light into the material, gestural, and sensual dimensions of computer-aided design technologies. Specifically, it shows how by combining historical research and creative prototyping this method can bring us closer to distant ways of seeing, touching, drawing, and designing—while raising new questions about the impact of CAD technologies on present-day architectural practices. It documents the development of two software reconstructions—of Ivan Sutherland’s “Sketchpad” and of Steven A. Coons’s “Coons Patch”—and reflects on the responses they elicited in the context of two exhibitions. The paper shows how software reconstruction can offer access to overlooked aspects of computer-aided design systems, specially their material and sensual dimensions, and how we may explore its broader potential for research, preservation, pedagogy, and speculative design of design technologies.

summary This paper presents a strategy for implementing computational methods in education to solve specific project related research challenges. In our case, we investigate novel solutions for Organic Photovoltaic Carrier Systems. Therefore, environmental forces (especially the sun and shade) are important design drivers in all projects. Whilst the individual projects are limited to one semester, it is our aim to advance and accumulate these patches within a longer-term research strategy. Especially design-build projects that include digital fabrication often require a skillset not always available in a design studio environment. Providing simple parametric patches frees up time for creative investigations and allows tackling projects that are more complex. In the following, we will present and discuss a series of patches developed over the course of five projects that became our case studies. We conclude, by identifying relevant aspects that might be generalized and evaluate our insights for others.

summary By 2050 an estimated 70 percent of the world's population will live in megacities with more than 10 million citizens (Renner 2018). This growth calls for new target-oriented, interdisciplinary methods in urban planning and design in cities to meet sustainable development targets. In response, this paper exemplifies an integrated urban design process on a master plan project in Vienna. The objective is to investigate the potential towards a holistic, digital, urban design process aimed at the development of a practical methodology for future designs. The presented urban design process includes analyses and simulation tools within Rhinoceros 3D and its plug-in Grasshopper as quality-enhancing mediums that facilitate the creative approaches in the course of the project. The increase in efficiency and variety of design variants shows a promising future for the practical suitability of this approach.

summary Industrial robotic arms are increasingly present in digital fabrication workflows due to their robustness, degrees of freedom, and potentially large scale. However, the range of possibilities they provide is limited by their typical software control paradigms, specifically offline programming. This model requires all the robotic instructions to be pre-defined before execution, a possibility only affordable in highly predictable environments. But in the context of architecture, design and art, it can hardly accommodate more complex forms of control, such as responding to material feedback, adapting to changing conditions on a construction site, or on-the-fly decision-making. We present Robot Ex Machina, an open-source computational framework of software tools for real-time robot programming and control. The contribution of this framework is a paradigm shift in robot programming models, systematically providing a platform to enable real-time interaction and control of mechanical actuators. Furthermore, it fosters programming styles that are reactive to, rather than prescriptive about, the state of the robot. We argue that this model is, compared to traditional offline programming, beneficial for creative individuals, as its concurrent nature and immediate feedback provide a deeper and richer set of possibilities, facilitates experimentation, flow of thought, and creative inquiry. In this paper, we introduce the framework, and discuss the unifying model around which all its tools are designed. Three case studies are presented, showcasing how the framework provides richer interaction models and novel outcomes in digital making. summary This paper presents a system prototype that demonstrates and tests how visual analytics of parametric design data can become an integral workflow in design exploration. Parametric design process, as a complex creative exercise, can lead to generation of a large number of alternative solutions rapidly. The designers are then tasked with effectively finding the potential solutions among a torrent of design data. This task poses challenges like choice overload, which considerably affects the designer’s performance and design output. We hypothesize that the application of visual analytics to parametric design data can help alleviate the choice overload problem. In this paper, we use the term “Design Analytics” which primarily revolves around the application of visual analytics to parametric design data and we test this approach with the help of a low-fidelity prototype called “DANZ: Design Analyzer:”.

summary ARgan is a geometrically complex bamboo sculpture that relied on Mixed Reality (MR) for its joint creation by multiple sculptors and used latest Augmented Reality (AR) technology to guide manual fabrication actions. It was built at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the fall of 2019 by thirty participants of a design-and-build workshop on the integration of AR in construction. As part of its construction workflow, holographic setups were created on multiple devices, including a series of Microsoft HoloLenses and several handheld Smartphones, all linked simultaneously to a single digital base model to interactively guide the manufacturing process. This paper critically evaluates the experience of extending recent AR and MR tool developments towards applications that centre on creative collaborative production. Using ARgan as a demonstrator project, its developed workflow is assessed on its ability to transform a geometrically complex digitally drafted design to its final physically built form, highlighting the necessary strategic integration of variability as an opportunity to relax notions on design precision and exact control. The paper concludes with a plea for digital technology's ability to stimulate dialogue and collaboration in creative production and augment craftsmanship, thus providing greater agency and more diverse design output.

summary Increasingly, the ubiquity of satellite imagery has made the data analysis and machine learning of large geographical datasets one of the building blocks of visuospatial intelligence. It is the key to discover current (and predict future) cultural, social, financial and political realities. How can we, as designers and researchers, empower citizens to understand and participate in the design of our cities amid this technological shift? As an initial step towards this broader ambition, a series of creative web applications, in the form of visual search engines, has been developed and implemented to data mine large datasets. Using open sourced deep learning and computer vision libraries, these applications facilitate the searching, detecting and curating of urban objects. In turn, the paper proposes and formulates a framework to design truly citizen-centric creative visual search engines -- a contribution to citizen science and citizen journalism in spatial terms.

summary This research aim is to develop a design support system for interactive exploration of urban space variants. During the early design process for urban masterplan, the design support system can evaluate the state of the design stage quickly and suggest alternative design variants to the designers. Design variants obtained while developing the design concept can be managed to be re-used. Through the management of design information at each design step, a designer can be supported to explore the history of the design process and reuse it. Therefore, it is possible to support breadth-first and depth-first design modes in solution development in a highly structured manner. Therefore, a user can practi ce informed decision making while preserving ownership during the design process, which can assist designer-led creative design activities.
