summary The fourth Industrial Revolution is characterised by the computational fusion of physical, digital and biological systems. Increasing information in terms of size, speed and scope exponentially. This fusion requires improved, if not new, tools and methods to deal with complexity and information processing. By opening Generative Systems to interact with the context, we believe that they can develop solutions that are more adequate for our time. This research began with a literature review about generative systems and their application to solve problems. We then selected the tools, Cellular Automata, L-Systems, Genetic Algorithms and Shape Grammar, and thought about how to translate these original mathematical tools to specific design situations. We tested the application of these tools and methods in a workshop, implementing recursive loops to open these techniques to interference. Analysing the empirical results made us revise our design thinking, relying on the study of complexity to understand how these techniques can be more context-aware, so we can make design evolve. Finally, we present a comparative framework analyses that interlaces techniques and methods, so in the future we can merge physical, digital and biological information.

summary This paper documents the computational design methods, digital fabrication strategies, and generative design process for [Lumen], winner of MoMA & MoMA PS1’s 2017 Young Architects Program. The project was installed in the courtyard at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, New York, during the summer of 2017. Two lightweight 3D digitally knitted fabric canopy structures composed of responsive tubular and cellular components employ recycled textiles, photo-luminescent and solar active yarns that absorb and store UV energy, change color, and emit light. This environment offers spaces of respite, exchange, and engagement as a 150 x 75-foot misting system responds to visitors’ proximity, activating fabric stalactites that produce a refreshing micro-climate. Families of robotically prototyped and woven recycled spool chairs provide seating throughout the courtyard. The canopies are digitally fabricated with over 1,000,000 yards of high tech responsive yarn and are supported by three 40+ foot tensegrity towers and the surrounding matrix of courtyard walls. Material responses to sunlight as well as physical participation are integral parts of our exploratory approach to the 2017 YAP brief. The project is mathematically generated through form-finding simulations informed by the sun, site, materials, program, and the material morphology of knitted cellular components. Resisting a biomimetic approach, [Lumen] employs an analogic design process where complex material behavior and processes are integrated with personal engagement and diverse programs. The comprehensive installation was designed by Jenny Sabin Studio and fabricated by Shima Seiki WHOLEGARMENT, Jacobsson Carruthers, and Dazian with structural engineering by Arup and lighting by Focus Lighting.

title Digitally aided analysis of medieval vaults in an English cathedral, using generative design tools

summary Medieval masons relied on a ruler and compass to generate designs of increasing complexity in both two and three dimensions. They understood that arcs and lines could be used for proportioning, working with halves, thirds, fifths and so on, rather than specific dimensions. Geometric rules enabled them to create vaulted bays, high up in church and cathedral interiors. In recent years, the influence of digital generative design tools can be seen in our built environment. We will explore generative design to reverse engineer and better understand the design and computational processes that the medieval masons might have employed at our case study site of Exeter Cathedral, England. Our focus is on a run of bays along the nave, which at first appear consistent in their design, yet in reality are subtly different. We will investigate the capacity for changes in the generative process while preserving the overall medieval design concept.

The rise of the Internet also changed the way architects communicated and promoted the emergence of global architectural practices in the planet. summary Today, architectural models are an important tool for illustrating drawn-on plans or computer-generated virtual models and making them understandable. In addition to the conventional methods for the manufacturing of physical models, a wide range of processes for Direct Digital Manufacturing (DDM) has spread rapidly in recent years. In order to facilitate the application of these new methods for architects, this contribution examines which technical and economic results are possible using 3D printed architectural models. Within a case study, it will be shown on the basis of a multi-storey detached house, which kind of data preparation is necessary. The DDM of architectural models will be demonstrated using two widespread techniques and the resulting costs will be compared.

title Meeting in the middle: Hybrid clay three-dimensional fabrication processes for bio-reef structures

summary Despite the relative accessibility of clay, its low cost and reputation as a robust and sustainable building material, clay three-dimensional printing remains an under-utilized digital fabrication technique in the production of architectural artefacts. Given this, numerous research projects have sought to extend the viability of clay three-dimensional digital fabrication by streamlining and automating workflows through computational methods and robotic technologies in ways that afford agency to the digital and machinic processes over human bodily skill. Three-dimensional printed clay has also gained prominence as a resilient material well suited to the design and fabrication of artificial reef and habitat- enhancing seawall structures for coastal marine environments depleted and disrupted by human activity, climate change and pollution. Still, these projects face similar challenges when three-dimensional printing complex forms from the highly plastic and somewhat unpredictable feed material of clay. In response, this article outlines a research project that seeks to improve the translation of complex geometries into physical clay artefacts through additive three- dimensional printing processes by drawing on the notion of digital craft and giving focus to human–machine interaction as a collaborative practice. Through the case study of the 1:1 scale fabrication of a computationally generated bio-reef structure using clay as a feed material and a readily available Delta Potterbot XLS-2 ceramic printer, the research project documents how, by exploiting the human ability to intuitively handle clay and adapt, and the machine’s ability to work efficiently and with precision, humans and machines can fabricate together . With the urgent need to develop more sustainable building practices and materials, this research contributes valuable knowledge of hybrid fabrication processes towards extending the accessibility and viability of clay three-dimensional printing as a resilient material and fabrication system.

summary Augmented graphical thinking operates by integrating algorithmic, heuristic, and manufacturing processes. The Representation and Ideation Laboratory (RILAB-2018) exercise begins with the application of a parametric definition developed by the team of teachers, allowing for the construction of structural systems by the means of the combination of segmental shells and bending-active. The main objetive is the construction of a scientific model of simulation for bending-active laminar structures has brought into reality trustworthy previews for architectural envelopes through the interaction of parametrized relational variables. This way we put designers in a strategic role for the building of the pre-analysis models, allowing more preciseness at the time of picking and defining materials, shapes, spaces and technologies and thus minimizing the decisions based solely in the definition of structural typological categories, local tradition or direct experience. The results verify that the strategic integration of models of geometric physical optimization and spatial representation greatly expand the capabilities in the construction of the complex system that operates in the act of projecting architecture.

summary There has been a recent increase in the exploration of mereological systems, speculating on how digital design, assembly and reconfiguration of digital materials (Gershenfeld, 2015) enables digitally informed physical worlds that change over time. Besides opportunities for construction and design automation, there is a potential to reimagine how multiple stakeholders can participate in the computational decision-making process, using the benefits of the mass customization of logistics (Retsin, 2019). This paper presents a research-by-design project that applies a digital and discrete material system to high-rise housing in Hong Kong. The project has developed an integrated approach to design, construction, and inhabitation, using a system of discrete parts which can be assembled in various apartment configurations, to incorporate varying occupants requirements and facilitate negotiations and changes over time.

summary The paper presents the development of an agent-based approach to modelling the interaction of human emotion and behaviour with built spaces. The study addresses how human behaviour and social relation can be represented and modelled to interact with a virtual built environment composed in parametric architectural geometry. KOALA, a prototype of agent-based modelling of social spatial dynamics at the core of a parametric architectural design environment is proposed. In building KOALA's system architecture, we adapted the PECS (Physical, Emotional, Cognitive, Social) reference model of human behaviour (Schmidt 2002) and introduced the concept of Social Spatial Comfort as a measurement of three key factors influencing human spatial experiences. KOALA was evaluated by a comparative modelling of two contrasting Vietnamese dwellings known to us. As expected, KOALA returns very different temporal characteristics of spatial modifications of the two dwellings over a simulated timeframe of one year. We discuss the lessons learned and further research required.

summary In the conservation plan of traditional architecture and settlement, the mismatch between design and construction is an inevitable problem. The mismatch commonly shows as the variations in the cognition of the traditionality of architecture feature. In most cases, the evaluation of historical feature is made based on designers' subjective perception, experience, and understanding of the traditional style. Also, without an appropriate guide and unified control, it could make the conservation plan less efficient in practice. Therefore, a quantitative method for conservation plan is needed, which is expected to be effective especially for massive non-key but traditional ordinary buildings. In this study on Gunanjie Street, in Yixing, China, a new method of feature analysis and generative design was developed to regenerate the district. The proposed method first adapted new data acquisition and processing techniques to gather information and build the database. Cognition investigation and morphology analysis were then implemented to quantify and evaluate the features of historical characteristics, as well as the knowledge discovery tools, were further used to abstract the rules of the traditional facade. With these phases, the proposed method was able to generate the referable design schemes quantitatively and establish generally accepted conservation plans and guidelines.

summary Fabricating process with robotic awareness and creativity makes architect able to explore the new boundary between digital and material world. Although parametric and generative design method make diverse processing of materials possible for robots, it's still necessary to establish a new design-fabrication framework, where we could simultaneously deal with designers, robots, data, sensor technology and material natural characters. In order to develop a softer system without gap between preset program and robot's varying environments, this paper attempts to establish an environment-computer-robot workflow and transform traditional robotic fabrication from linear to more tangible and suitable for architects' and designers' intuitive motion and gesture. RAF (Robotic Aware Fabrication), a concept of real-time external enhancement fabrication is proposed, and a new workflow of HARF (Hand-motion Augmented Robotic Fabrication) is developed, where motion sensor captures designer's hand-motion, filter algorithm recognizes the intention and update the preset program, robotic controller and RSI (Robotic Sensor Interface) adjusts robot's TCP (Tool Center Point) path in real time. With HARF workflow, two case studies of Hand-motion robotic dance and Free-form concrete wall are made.

Integration of digital design technologies in this endeavour presents opportunities for a more performative and spatially diverse architecture production, even in construction contexts typified by limited means and/or resources. This paper reports on historic precedent case study research that informs an ongoing larger study focussing on novel algorithmic methods for the design and production of lightweight, large-span, catenary glulam roof structures. Given their structural operation in full tension, catenary-based roof structures substantially reduce material needs when compared with those relying on straight beams (Wong and Crolla, 2019). Yet, the manufacture of their non-standard geometries typically requires costly bespoke hardware setups, having resulted in recent projects trending away from the more spatially engaging geometric experiments of the second half of the 20th century. The study hypothesis that the evolutionary design optimisation of this tectonic system has the potential to re-open and expand its practically available design solution space. This paper covers the review of a range of built projects employing catenary glulam roof system, starting from seminal historic precedents like the Festival Hall for the Swiss National Exhibition EXPO 1964 (A. Lozeron, Swiss, 1964) and the Wilkhahn Pavilions (Frei Otto, Germany, 1987), to contemporary examples, including the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre (HCMA Architecture + Design, Canada, 2016). It analysis their structural concept, geometric and spatial complexity, fabrication and assembly protocols, applied construction detailing solutions, and more, with as aim to identify methods, tools, techniques, and construction details that can be taken forward in future research aimed at minimising construction complexity. Findings from this precedent study form the basis for the evolutionary-algorithmic design and construction method development that is part of the larger study. By expanding the tectonic system’s practically applicable architecture design solution space and facilitating architects’ access to a low-tech producible, spatially versatile, lightweight, eco-friendly, wooden roof structure typology, this study contributes to environmentally sustainable building.

summary This research showcases the integrated design process and development of an ultra-light-weight, composite dome structure as a case study for the investigation of high-performance, long-span, fibre-reinforced-polymer (FRP) based building systems. Particular emphasis is given to the exploration of design strategies and the exposure of multidirectional flows of information across different fields under the premise of going beyond preliminary investigations on a demonstrator level, towards full scale architectural applications. Building upon previous research in the realm of lightweight fiber composites conducted at the University of Stuttgart, novel design strategies and fabrication methods are discussed. Based on the design and development of the Buga Fibre Pavilion for the Heilbronn Bundesgartenschau 2019, previously prototypically tested processes are further developed and implemented at a larger scale which attempt to reduce the necessary formwork to a minimum while achieving a flexible and scalable building system.

summary Recent developments in indoor positioning technology means gathering personal interaction data is possible however, the process of analysing this data to determine where and when interactions occur indoors is not yet standardised.This paper proposes a method to gather and examine indoor positioning data to infer face-to-face interactions indoors. The case study looks specifically at indoor office environment however the principles shown can be applied to other indoor spaces. This paper explores a high-level technological methodology that gathers indoor positioning data from users. A formula is used to calculate if, when and where interactions occur over a floor-plan, as well as visualising these interactions to highlight high and low interaction areas. The system considers the proximity between the individuals, the angle between their forward physical orientation, and any obstructions that might divide individuals from each other. The information presented in this paper can be used as a theoretical baseline to inform future post-occupancy evaluation methods. Additionally, this paper demonstrates the merit of using indoor positioning systems to test the effectiveness of design principles in encouraging face-to-face interactions of the users.

summary This paper aims to link human's emotions and cognition to the built environment to improve the user's mental health and well-being. It focuses on cyber-physical adaptive spaces that can respond to the user's physiological and psychological needs based on their biological and neurological data. Through artificial intelligence and affective computing, this paper seeks to create user-oriented spaces that can learn from occupant's behavioral patterns in real-time, reduce user's anxiety and depression, enhance environmental quality, and promote more flexible human-centered designs for people with mental/physical disabilities. To achieve its objectives, this research integrates tangible computing devices/interfaces, robotic self-adjusting structures, interactive systems of control, programmable materials, human behavior, and a sensory network. Through embedded responsiveness and material intelligence, the goal is to blur the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres and create cyber-physical spaces that can "feel" and be controlled by the user's mind and feelings.

summary Environmental comfort and space occupancy are essential considerations in architectural design process. Façade systems deeply impact both aspects but are usually standardized. However, performance-based facade systems tackle these issues through computational design to devise non-homogeneous elements. This work proposes a ceramic facade system designed according to a performance-based process grounded on environmental analysis and parametric design to allow adaptation and geometric variation according to specific building demands on environmental comfort and functionality. In this process, the Design Science Research method guided the exploration of both design and evaluation, bridging the gap between theory and practice. Positive facade environmental performance were found from digital and physical models assessment in terms of radiation, illuminance, dampness (with ventilation) and temperature. Computational processes minimized radiation inside the building while maximized illuminance. Their association influenced on operative temperature, which dropped according to local dampness and material absorption. Accordingly, this design process associates not only environmental comfort and functionality concepts but also adaptability, flexibility, mass customization, personal fabrication, additive manufacturing concepts, being an example architectural design changes in the 4th Industrial Revolution.

summary This paper reports the design, fabrication and evaluation strategies of full-scale aluminium panel prototypes developed for a kinetic hybrid facade system. The concept of a hybrid facade system was proposed as a solution to maximise the value of kinetic intelligent building systems by repurposing the animation sunscreening as a low-resolution media display. The overarching research project investigates the potential, feasibility and real-life applications of a hybrid facade that integrates the: environmental, media and individual micro-control functions in one compound system that operates through autonomous wirelessly controlled hexagonal rotating panels. The study explores new ways of communication and connectivity in architectural and urban context, utilising and fusing together a wide range of technologies including: artificial intelligence, robotics, wireless control technologies, calibration of physical and digital simulations, development of fully autonomous self-organised and powered units and the use of additive digital manufacturing. This article reports the third research stage of the hybrid facade project development - the manufacture of full scale panel prototypes.
