title Geospatial tool-chains: Planning support systems for organisational teams

summary In practice, most planners do not make significant use of planning support systems. Although extensive research has been conducted, the focus tends to be on supporting individual tasks, and the outcomes are often the development of new stand-alone tools that are difficult to integrate into existing workflows. The knowledge contribution in this article focuses on developing a novel spatial decision support framework focusing on the workflows and tool-chains that span across different teams with varying skill sets and objectives, within an organisation. In the proposed framework, the core decision-making process uses a set of decision parameters that are combined using a weighted decision tree. The framework is evaluated by developing and testing a workflow and GIS tool-chain for a real-world case study of land suitability and mixed-use potentiality analysis.

summary In this project we used the concept of shape grammars as a tool for understanding the vernacular heritage in the Moorish village of Aljezur in the South of Portugal, and subsequently use it to guide the planning rehabilitation and growth of the village. First, we inferred a grammar for describing the existent vernacular heritage, and based on it developed two other grammars suitable for the rehabilitation of pre-existences and the construction of new houses involving features that can harmoniously mingle with the heritage surroundings. This paper supports the use of shape grammars for the development of heritage safeguard strategies in historical urban agglomerates.

title Encoding Design Process using Interactive Data Visualization

summary The existing research on design space exploration favors the exploration of multiple parallel designs, however the act of exploring a design space is still to be integrated in the design of new digital media. We conducted an experiment to understand how designers navigate through large numbers of design alternatives generated from parametric models. We analyzed the data with a purpose-built visualization tool. We observed that participants changed the task environment and took design actions, frequently combining these into action combinations. Five tasks emerged from our analysis: Criteria Building, Criteria Testing, Criteria Applying, Reflection and (Re)Setting. From our analysis, we suggest several features for future systems for interacting with design alternatives.

summary For the built environment's transformation we are confronted with complex dynamics connected to economic, ecologic and demographic change (Czerkauer-Yamu et al., 2013; Yamu, 2014). In general, cities are complex systems being a "heterogeneous mosaic" of a variety of cultures and functions, characterised by diverging perceptions and interests (ibid). The juxtaposed perceptions and interests in relation to ongoing spatial processes of change create a particularly complex situation. Thus, for planning processes we are in need of approaches that are able to cope not only with the urban complexity but also allow for participatory processes to empower citizens. This paper presents the approach of using Digital Twins in virtual reality (VR) for civic engagement in urban planning, enriched with quantitative and qualitative empirical data as one promising approach to tackle not only the complexity of cities but also involve citizens in the planning process.

summary The paper presents the Möbius Geospatial Modeller, a web-based visual programming tool developed by the authors for creating interactive 3D geospatial datasets. As an evaluation of the modeller, the results of a five-day workshop are presented. The paper ends with a discussion, proposing the creation of customised visual programming environments that provide users with the ability to create their own customised high-level domain-specific functions, as opposed to trying to creating hundreds of functions to cater for all possible used case.

summary In terms of the efficiency and informatization in the architecture and construction industry, the Fourth Industrial Revolution presents positive aspects of technological development, but we need to discuss the expanded concept, the Anthropocene. The era of the human-made environment having a powerful influence on the global system is called Anthropocene. Since the 1950s, many indicators representing human activity and earth system have shown the 'Great acceleration'. Currently, lots of urban data including building information, construction waste, and GHG emission ratio is indicating how much the urban area was contaminated with artifacts. So, the integrated planning and design approach are needed for sustainable design with data integration. This paper examines the GIS, LCA and BIM tools focusing on building information and environmental load. With the literature review, the computational system for sustainable design is demonstrated to integrate into one holistic framework for the Anthropocene. There were some limitations that data was simplified during the statistical processing, and the framework has limitations that must be demonstrated by actual data in the future. However, this could be an early approach to integrating geospatial and environmental analysis with the design framework. And it can be applied to another urban area for sustainable urban models for the Anthropocene

summary This paper proposes a fuzzy-based approach for the automated evaluation of spatial layout configurations. Our objective is to evaluate soft and interdependent design qualities (such as connectedness, enclosure, spaciousness, continuity, adjacency, etc.), to satisfy multiple and mutually inclusive criteria, and to account for all potential and logical solutions without discarding preferable, likely or even less likely possible solutions. Using fuzzyTECH, a fuzzy logic software development tool, we devise all possible spatial relation inputs affecting physical and non-physical outputs for a given space using descriptive rule blocks. We implement this fuzzy logic system on an existing residential space to evaluate different layout alternatives. We define all linguistic input variables, output variables, and fuzzy sets, and present space-space relations using membership functions. We use the resulting database of fuzzy agents to evaluate the design of the existing residential spaces.

summary The study presented in this paper is part of ongoing research that is exploring how digital design tools and technologies can support waste cardboard reuse for manufacturing architectural elements in a context of scarcity. For this study, we explore the use of a parametric design tool to design and fabricate three different architectural components using waste cardboard sheets: acoustic panels and two types of formwork for concrete. This design tool maximizes the smart reuse of a waste material and aids in the fabrication process by outputting instructions for cutting, scoring, and folding. This paper also demonstrates how parametric design tools can help reuse non-standard (dimensions variable) waste materials, mediating between measurable material conditions and desired material targets for designs.

summary This paper proposes a new workflow between design and fabrication phases through the introduction of a novel framework centered around a stylus that is tracked in real-time for five-axis by a single RGB-D camera. Often misconceived as a linear process, urgent reinterpretation of design and fabrication tools is discussed briefly. Similar to how industrial robots have become an enabler for fabrication process in the field of architecture and construction, the necessity for providing a similar tool that would reform the "design" process is underlined. A generic stylus is proposed with interchangeable operations which allows for intuitive, non-obstructive grasp of the user serves as the physical avatar that transform into a virtual representation of a fabrication tool mounted on a six-axis industrial robot arm. User interaction with the apparatus is simulated for the user, and the user is notified of any errors as the interaction is translated for motion planning of a KUKA KR20-3 industrial robot.

summary Generative design (GD) is the process of defining high-level goals and constraints and then using computation to automatically explore a range of solutions that meet the desired requirements. Generative processes are intelligent ways to fast-track early design stages. The outcomes are analyzed simultaneously to inform decisions for architects and engineers. Whilst material properties have been defined as a driving agent within generative systems to calculate structure, material performance or structural capacity are not linked with early decision-making. In response, this paper sets a constrained approach upon traditional and non-traditional materials to validate the feasibility of structures. A GD tool is developed within Grasshopper using C-sharp, Karamaba3D, Galapagos and various engineering formulas. The result is a script, which prioritizes the structural qualities of material as a driving factor within generative systems and facilitates communication across different expertise.

summary A common understanding exists that citizens should become more involved in the design, planning, and governance of the city. Due to a lack of common platforms and difficulties in the meaningful integration of the participatory input, however, the tools and methods currently employed in citizen engagement are often ill connected to the design and governance tools and processes used by experts. In this paper we describe a Grasshopper and Rhino based approach, which allows designers to share a subset of the design space formed by parametric design variants with citizens via the online interface Beta.Speckle. In a user study we evaluated the usability of the tool as well as studied the design choices of participants, which were found to be influenced by preferences for visual order and underlying economic, social, and environmental values. For the future design of participatory exercises, it was concluded that indicators relating to citizens' values and preferences will allow for a more effective exploration of the design space and increase the meaningfulness of results.

summary This paper presents a visibility analysis for 3D urban environments and its possible applications for urban design. This multi-view visibility analysis tool was generated by 3D isovist in Grasshopper, Rhino. The advantage of this analysis tool is that it can be compared within the measurement area. In addition, setting a visual object different from the existing isovist. The visual object is a landmark of a city space, such as landscape or object. First, the application experimented on the relevance between the calculation time and precision by this analysis tool. Based on the results of this experiment, it applied it to an actual part of an urban space. The multi-view visibility includes confirming the possibility of a comprehensive evaluation on the urban redevelopment and change of the view caused by the building layout plan - by numerical analysis showing the visual characteristics of the area while using 3D isovist theory. The practically applied area is Shinkiba, which is a part of Tokyo's landfill site; and while using the calculated data, multi-view visibility of each plan in the simulation of the visibility map is compared and evaluated.

summary Due to its geographic size and long cultural history of fluctuating borders, China has a large number of historic settlements; each with their own unique geometric, cultural, social, and spatial characteristics. Despite the various studies that have attempted to qualitatively describe the spatial properties of historic towns, there are limited attempts to understand the spatial qualities of these towns through a quantitative approach, such as space syntax. This paper proposes and demonstrates a computational approach based on space syntax to map spatial properties of these towns. Four spatial features are examined and evaluated to capture the spatial patterns of Chinese historic towns: (1) axiality, (2) curvature, (3) intelligibility, and (4) synergy. The approach has been applied to four typical towns in China: Pingyao, Lijiang, Kulangsu, and Wuzhen. This computational approach provides a new way to complement existing qualitative measures of understanding the urban form and use of historic towns, providing a powerful tool to support the development of policy affecting historic town design/planning, heritage conservation, and heritage tourism.

title Campus regenerative design supported by university Wi-Fi connections

summary A 60-year-old Brazilian university campus reflects its development actions throughout history. The degradation of its water streams and automobiles prioritization has significantly impacted the ecosystems’ resilience and the university’s activities. This article explores data analytics and visualization of Wi-Fi authentication processes, whose data have been stored in the last 10 years. This noteworthy connections database is a powerful tool, still overlooked due to the remarkable risks for users’ privacy. Brazil has followed 2018 European regulations to protect data privacy, when working with personal data. Therefore, we present an anonymization process that prevents one to identify and distinguish a subject within a set of subjects of the database. Three studies illustrate our examination of data potential to understand the university’s dynamics. These inquiries present relevant contributions to the process of planning and implementing campus green areas at the rivers’ edges, pedestrian and cycle paths, and places to facilitate interdisciplinary encounters.

summary This paper describes two workshops raising awareness of the complexity of the interactions between digital and non-digital space, networks, devices, and systems. The exercises are included in broader research that deals with the human condition in the contemporary and future cities, focusing on the relationship between public space and weaponized data as a threat but also as an opportunity to act. A new way to understand and operate the street must be developed, with new epistemic assemblages, which allow us to avoid dystopian or technocratic visions in order to think collectively in our future human habitat. We offer here a toolkit, a series of strategies, to cope with the overwhelming complexity and act. The research is still open and the present paper shows the most recent experiences of a twenty-year journey.

summary The paper describes an urban storm water management model under development designed specifically for architects, allowing the visualization of storm water management scenarios in urban blocks, as well as the quantitative comparison of their impact to the microclimate. It seeks to answer the question of how computational technologies can help architects integrate storm water management into the design process and engage with water sensitive design principles through the development of an "architect-friendly" model. The model is expected to function as a simulation tool that will support design decisions on storm water management retrofitting measures in urban blocks, by allowing the evaluation of an urban water improvement project at its initial design stage, as well as the generation and comparison of alternate water integration design solutions. Selected urban blocks in Greece will be used as case studies to test and evaluate the urban water model during the model development stage.

summary This paper explains the development of a generative urban design tool based on shape grammars. The novelty of this tool lies in considering the topographic constraints of the site and generating various alternatives of urban design scenarios accordingly. For the purposes of this research, San Diego has been chosen as an example of a steep city with varied topography that, in consequence, has created distinct urban typologies within the city. With the use of shape grammars, the rules and patterns forming the urban structure of each typology have been decodified. The extracted urban shape grammar is then used as the basis for a generative design tool producing various urban design scenarios considering the limitations and potential of the site's topology. This paper describes the extracted urban shape grammars and how that informs the development of the presented generative urban design tool.

summary In the past decade, urban researchers have paid significant attention to the emergence of computer science and urban planning. According to the literature, social media as a pool of real-time citizen feedback can be investigated to inform smart city synergies. However, the success factors of such an approach have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, various factors were derived from an extensive literature review to create an efficient e-participation platform. It is explained how our proposed platform 1) complies to the data protection regulations 2) uses advanced text analysis and natural language processing (NLP) tools to identify opinions and emotions 3) maintains persistent communication between citizens and city planners 4) incorporates creative visualisation techniques 5) is informative for its target audience 6) takes into consideration the socio-cultural diversity and 7) can be used as an informing tool in combination with offline methods of participation.

summary This paper explores the process and importance of designing and implementing bespoke toolkit solutions within the architectural design discipline. Along with the need for bespoke design solutions comes the need for fluency in architectural principles, digital tool facility, and computational development skill sets (the combination are, today, are still an uncommon skill set). This skill set combination, quite possibly, will become increasingly necessary for design teams to incorporate. This paper argues, through a series of case study projects produced by an internal platform; that the way forward for the architectural design discipline is through bespoke tool-sets geared toward meeting the needs of architectural designers. Design teams are pursuing increasing levels of sophistication and intelligent solutions that meet the demands of problems faced in the building industry today.
