summary As the field of 3D printing technologies expand, complex materials that require a deeper engagement, due to their more unstable properties, are of increasing interest. Cementitious composites, clays and other ceramic materials are of particular relevance: their potential for fast large-scale fabrication and local availability position these technologies at the forefront of expansion for 3D printing. Despite the extensive benefits inherent to clays, their irregularities and the largely unpredictable deviations that occur when printing from a digital model, currently limit design and architectural-scale applications. However, these deformations could conversely be harnessed as design generators, opening up avenues for both aesthetic and functional exploration. The paper presents an investigation into the inherent material instabilities of the clay 3D printing process for the development of an architectural masonry facade system. Through an iterative process based in craft, a new capacity for material expression and authenticity beyond previous manufacturing capabilities can become actualized.

summary This paper introduces a series of design and fabrication tests directed towards the use of bendable 3D printing materials in order to simplify a foam bubble-based geometry as a frame structure for modular assembly. The aspiration to reference a spittlebug's bubble cocoon in nature for a light installation in the urban context was integrated into a computational workflow conditioning light-weight, material-, and cost savings along with assembly-simplicity. Firstly, before elaborating on the project motivation and background in foam structures and applications of 3D-printed thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) material, this paper describes the physical nature of bubble foams in its relevant aspects. Subsequently this is implemented into the parametric design process for an optimized foam structure with Grasshopper clarifying the need for flexible materials to enhance modular feasibility. Following, the additive manufacturing iterations of the digitally designed node components with TPU are presented and evaluated. Finally, after the test assembly of both components is depicted, this paper assesses the divergence between natural foams and the case study structure with respect to self-organizing behavior.

summary This paper presents a computational design approach and a digital fabrication method for a freeform aluminum facade made of prefabricated bespoke elements. The fabrication of customized metal elements for construction remains a challenge to this day. Traditional fabrication methods, such as sand casting, are labor intensive, while direct metal 3D printing has limitations for architecture where large-scale elements are needed. Our research investigates the use of Binder Jetting technology to 3D print sand molds for casting bespoke facade elements in aluminum. Using this approach, custom facade elements can be economically fabricated in a short time. By automating the generation of mold design for each element, an efficient digital process chain from design to fabrication was established. In search of a computational method to integrate casting constraints into the form generation and the design process, a differential growth algorithm was used. The application of this fabrication method (3D printed sand molds and casting) in architecture is demonstrated via the design and fabrication of a freeform facade-screen. The paper articulates the relationship between the fabrication process and the differential growth algorithm with a parallel process of adaptive design tools and fabrication tests to exhibit future potential of the method for architectural practice.

summary This project emerged from collaborative trans-disciplinary research between architecture, engineering, biology, and materials science to generate novel applications in micro-scale 3D printed ceramics. Specifically, PolyBrick H2.0 adapts internal bone-based hydraulic networks through controlled water flow from 3D printed micro-textures and surface chemistry. Engagement across disciplines produced the PolyBrick series at the Sabin Lab (Sabin, Miller, and Cassab 2014) . The series is a manifestation of novel digital fabrication techniques, bioinspired design, materials inquiry, and contemporary evolutions of building materials. A new purpose for the brick is explored that is not solely focused on the mechanical constraints necessary for built masonry structures. PolyBrick H2.0 interweaves the intricacies of living systems (beings and environments combined) to create a more responsive and interactive material system. The PolyBrick 2.0 series looks at human bone as a design model for foundational research. PolyBrick H2.0 merges the cortical bone hydraulic network with new functionalities as a water filtration and collection system for self-preservation and conservation as well as passive cooling solutions. It also pushes the ability of 3D printing techniques to the microscale. These functionalities are investigated under context for a better construction material, but its use may extend further.

summary The goal of this research is to design and fabricate a modular living wall brick system that purifies and cools air for various indoor environments. The research utilizes ceramic 3d printing techniques for fabrication; and living plants in conjunction with evaporative cooling techniques for indoor air quality control. The brick is made of soil which become porous after firing or drying. Water from the reservoirs slowly weep through the porous brick, creating a layer of water on the surface of the brick. The air movement around the saturated brick creates evaporative cooling and the hydro-seeded plants absorb water from the surface. The shape and texture of the Weeping Brick maximizes the cooling effect via large surface area. As an aggregated wall system, the water circulates from unit to unit by gravity through interconnected reservoirs embedded within each unit. The plants and moss transform the Weeping Brick into a living wall system, purifying and conditioning the indoor air.

This research is part of a 3-phase project involving a multidisciplinary team of designers, architects, material specialists and marine ecologists. The Bio Shelters Project uses an innovative approach to designing and fabricating marine bio-shelters that ecologically enhance seawalls, by promoting native biodiversity and providing seawater filtration, carbon sequestration and fisheries productivity. The design of the 3D print structure is a data-driven approach that incorporates ecological data to optimise the form for growth and survivorship of marine species under the environmental conditions of the installation site as well as being an integral part of the design project and the site.

summary The Hummingbird is an amazing creature. The male Anna’s Hummingbird changes color from dark green to iridescence pink in his spectacular courtship. Can we exploit this phenomenon to produce color and shape changing material systems for the future of design? This paper describes the design process behind the interactive installation, Iridescence, through the logic of two interconnected themes, ‘morphology’ and ‘behavior’. Inspired by the gorget of the Anna’s hummingbird, this 3D printed collar is equipped with a facial tracking camera and an array of 200 rotating quills. The custom-made actuators flip their colors and start to make patterns, in response to the movement of onlookers and their facial expressions. The paper addresses how wearables can become a vehicle for self-expression, capable of influencing social interaction and enhancing one’s sensory experience of the world. Through the lens of this project, the paper proposes ‘bio-inspired emotive matter’ as an interdisciplinary design approach at the intersection of Affective Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Ethology, which can be applied in many design fields. The paper argues that bio-inspired material systems should be used not just for formal or performative reasons, but also as an interface for human emotions to address psycho-social issues.

summary The benefits of additive manufacturing technologies for the production of customized construction elements has been well documented for several decades. Multi-material additive manufacturing (MM-AM) enhances these capacities by introducing region-specific characteristics to printed objects. Several examples of the production of multi-material assemblies, including functionally-graded materials (FGMs) exist at the architectural scale, but none are known for ceramics. Factors limiting the development and application of this production method include the cost and complexity of existing MM-AM machinery, and the lack of a suitable computational workflow for the production of MM-AM ceramics, which often relies on a continuous linear toolpath. We present a method for the MM-AM of paste-based ceramics that allows for unique material expressions with relatively simple end-effector design. By borrowing methods of co-extrusion found in other industries and incorporating a 4th axis of motion into the printing process, we demonstrate a precisely controlled MM-AM deposition strategy for paste-based ceramics. We present a computational workflow for the generation of toolpaths, and describe full-body tiles and 3D artifacts that can be produced using this method. Future process refinements include the introduction of more precise control of material gradation and refinements to material composition for increased element functionality.

summary Mycelium-based bio-composites can propose a renewable and biodegradable alternative for architectural construction materials. These biomaterials result from growth of mycelium, fibrous root systems of fungi, on organic substrates in controlled environmental conditions. This paper presents a material study that explores how substrate type and added supplements used for cultivating mycelium affect the compressive strength of mycelium-based composites for use as masonry units in architectural construction. For this purpose, samples grown using Pleurotus Ostreatus (Gray Oyster mushroom strain) on three different substrates (sawdust, straw and a mixture of sawdust and straw) with and without supplementation are tested for compressive strength.

summary This research presents the development of a construction system for a solid expanded cork building envelope. The inspiration for this research is the “Cork House” built in 2019 by Matthew Barnett Howland and Oliver Wilton, who developed a Cork Construction Kit for a monolithic dry-jointed cork structure. The goal of this research is to analyze and develop different varieties of construction methods for a dry-joined cork building by combining and applying traditional masonry techniques. The objective is to generate a material-based design for cork construction elements trough prototyping and using a selection of digital tools such as 3D modeling and 3D printing. Expanded cork is a 100% plant-based material which, if applied correctly, has the capacity to be used as a load bearing, insulating and protective structure all at once. It has almost no environmental impact and is completely compostable. To maintain the material's compostable property, this construction system has to be developed without any kind of binders or mortar. Additionally, this more reduced and simplified form of construction will not only make it possible to build without any specific expertise, but at the same time ensure resources to be reused or composted at the end of building life.

summary This paper presents a modular, digital construction system for lightweight spatial structures made from reinforced concrete. For design and fabrication, a digital workflow is presented, which includes the rationalization of a freeform geometry into adaptive spatial modules made up entirely of planar components. For fast and precise fabrication, these components are 3D printed using a novel 3D concrete printing technology called "Shotcrete 3D Printing". The ongoing research is demonstrated by an initial real-scale prototype of one exemplary spatial module. Lastly, the paper provides an outlook into future research, which is necessary to make this digital construction system applicable to the real-scale construction of large, wide-spanning structures.

summary Over the past decade, we have witnessed rapid advancements on both practical and theoretical levels in regard to automated construction as a consequence of increasing sophistication of digital fabrication technologies such as robotics, 3D printing, etc. However, digital fabrication technology is often very limited when it comes to dealing with delicate and complex crafting processes. Although digital fabrication processes have become widely accessible and utilized across industries in recent times, there are still a number of fabrication techniques—which heavily rely on human labour—due to the complex nature of procedures and delicacy of materials. With this in mind, we need to ask ourselves if full automation is truly an ultimate goal, or if we need to (re)consider the role of humans in the architectural construction chain, as automation becomes more prevalent. We propose rethinking the role which human, machine, and computer have in construction— occupying the territory between purely automated, exclusively robotically-driven fabrication and highly crafted processes requiring human labour. This is to propose an alternative to reducing construction to fully automated assembly of simplified/discretized building parts, by appreciating physical properties of materials and nature of crafting processes. The research proposes a design-to-construction workflow pursued and enabled by augmented humans using AR devices. As a result, proposed workflows are tested on three prototypical inhabitable structure, aiming to be applicable to other projects in the near future, and to bridge the gap between purely automated construction processes on one hand, and craft-based, material-driven but labour-intensive processes on the other.

summary The research presented in this paper is part of a larger body of emerging research into embedding autonomy in the built environment. We develop a framework for designing and implementing effective autonomous architecture defined by three key properties: situated and embodied agency, facilitated variation, and intelligence.We present a novel application of Deep Reinforcement Learning to learn adaptable behaviours related to autonomous mobility, self-structuring, self-balancing, and spatial reconfiguration. Architectural robotic prototypes are physically developed with principles of embodied agency and facilitated variation. Physical properties and degrees of freedom are applied as constraints in a simulated physics-based environment where our simulation models are trained to achieve multiple objectives in changing environments. This holistic and generalizable approach to aligning deep reinforcement learning with physically reconfigurable robotic assembly systems takes into account both computational design and physical fabrication. Autonomous Robotic Tensegrity (ART) is presented as an extended case study project for developing our methodology. Our computational design system is developed in Unity3D with simulated multi-physics and deep reinforcement learning using Unity’s ML-agents framework. Topological rules of tensegrity are applied to develop assemblies with actuated tensile members. Single units and assemblies are trained for a series of policies using reinforcement learning in single-agent and multi-agent setups. Physical robotic prototypes are built and actuated to test simulated results.

summary We present a framework to generate intelligent spatial assemblies from sets of digitally encoded spatial parts designed by the architect with embedded principles of prefabrication, assembly awareness, and reconfigurability. The methodology includes a bespoke constraint-solving algorithm for autonomously assembling 3D geometries into larger spatial compositions for the built environment. A series of graph-based analysis methods are applied to each assembly to extract performance metrics related to architectural space-making goals, including structural stability, material density, spatial segmentation, connectivity, and spatial distribution. Together with the constraint-based assembly algorithm and analysis methods, we have integrated a novel application of deep reinforcement (RL) learning for training the models to improve at matching the multiperformance goals established by the user through self-play. RL is applied to improve the selection and sequencing of parts while considering local and global objectives. The user’s design intent is embedded through the design of partial units of 3D space with embedded fabrication principles and their relational constraints over how they connect to each other and the quantifiable goals to drive the distribution of effective features. The methodology has been developed over three years through three case study projects called ArchiGo (2017–2018), NoMAS (2018–2019), and IRSILA (2019-2020). Each demonstrates the potential for buildings with reconfigurable and adaptive life cycles.

title Design of a post-disaster shelter through soft computing

summary Temporary shelters become a more critical subject of architectural design as the increasing number of natural disasters taking place each year result in a larger number of people in need of urgent sheltering. Therefore, this project focuses on designing a temporary living space that can respond to the needs of different post-disaster scenarios and form a modular system through differentiation of units. When designing temporary shelters, it is a necessity to deal with the provision of materials, low-cost production and the time limit in the emergency as well as the needs of the users and the experiential quality of the space. Although computational approaches might lead to much more efficient and resilient design solutions, they have been utilized in very few examples. For that reason and due to their suitability to work with architectural design problems, soft computing methods shape the core of the methodology of the study. Initially, a digital model is generated through a set of rules that define a growth algorithm. Then, Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithms alter this growth algorithm while evaluating different configurations through the objective functions constructed within a Fuzzy Neural Tree. The struggle to represent design goals in the form of Fuzzy Neural Tree holds potential for the further use of it for architectural design problems centred on resilience. Resilience in this context is defined as a measure of how agile a design is when dealing with a major sheltering need in a post-disaster environment. Different from the previous studies, this article aims to focus on the design of a temporary shelter that can respond to different user types and disaster scenarios through mass customization, using Fuzzy Neural Tree as a novel approach. While serving as a temporary space, the design outcomes are expected to create a more neighbourhood-like pattern with a stronger sense of community for the users compared to the previous examples.

summary Vertical farms and gardens are not new in dense urban environments, but few examples further explore the architectural potential and possibilities of the form to apply the same design approach to existing surfaces and walls of buildings. In addition, there is a design opportunity to exploit existing wall surfaces as 'analogue' media screens by using the vertical farm and garden as a medium of representation. In this paper we explore the opportunity for new design possibilities to achieve a hybrid architectural wall system as a reciprocal retrofit for existing building surfaces, integrating a vertical micro-farm and media screen. This architectural opportunity is explored through agile methods and the early design stages of a hybrid green media wall, PixelGreen. PixelGreen will be retrofitted to an existing wall of a high-rise building to convey mediated, graphical, artistic content and provide edible plant micro-farming simultaneously. The physical proof of concept is given through a modular mock-up with a programmed UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) serving as the 'agent' for constant updating of mediated content, maintenance and a regular farming cycle. The outcome of this approach provides preliminary insight into how to feasibly implement a hybrid green media wall with autonomous robotics and computation technology.

summary This paper aims to propose an approach to automated classifying building element instance in BIM using deep learning-based 3D object classification algorithm. Recently, studies related to checking or validating engine of BIM object for ensuring data integrity of BIM instances are getting attention. As a part of this research, this paper train recognition models that are targeted at basic building element and interior element using 3D object recognition technique that uses images of objects as inputs. Object recognition is executed in two stages; 1) class of object (e.g. wall, window, seating furniture, toilet fixture and etc.), 2) sub-type of specific classes (e.g. Toilet or Urinal). Using the trained models, BIM plug-in prototype is developed and the performance of this AI-based approach with test BIM model is checked. We expect this recognition approach to help ensure the integrity of BIM data and contribute to the practical use of BIM.

summary Buildings are responsible for 39% of global energy-related carbon emissions, with operational activities contributing 28% and materials and construction accounting for 11%(World Green Building Council, 2019) It is therefore vital to reconsider our reliance on fossil fuels for building materials and to develop new advanced manufacturing techniques that enable an integrated approach to material-controlled conception and production. The emergence of Multi-material Additive Manufacturing (MM-AM) technology represents a paradigm shift in producing elements with hybrid properties derived from novel and optimized solutions. Through robotic fabrication, MM-AM offers streamlined operations, reduced material usage, and innovative fabrication methods. It encompasses a plethora of methods to address diverse construction needs and integrates material gradients through data-driven analyses, challenging traditional prefabrication practices and emphasizing the current growth of machine learning algorithms in design processes. The research outlined in this paper presents an innovative approach to MM-AM gradient 3D printing through robotic fabrication, employing data-driven performative analyses enabling control over print paths for sustainable applications in both the AM industry and our built environment. The article highlights several designed prototypes from two distinct phases, demonstrating the framework's viability, implications, and constraints: a workshop dedicated to data-driven analyses in facade systems for MM-AM 3D-printed brick components, and a 3D-printed brick facade system utilizing two renewable and bio-materials—Cork sourced from recycled stoppers and Charcoal, with the potential for carbon sequestration.

summary This paper presents the development and evaluation of the Geelong Digital Outdoor Museum (GDOM) prototype accessible at https://gdom.mindlab.cloud. GDOM is a portable museum‚our novel adaptation of the distributed museum model (Stuedahl & Lowe, 2013) which uses mobile devices to present museum collections attached to physical sites. Our prototype defines a way for intangible heritage associated with tangible landscapes to be accessible via personal digital devices using 360 3D scanned digital replicas of physical landscapes (photogrammetric digital models). Our work aligns with efforts set out in the UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) to safeguard cultural and natural heritage, by openly disseminating the heritage of physical sites seamlessly through the landscape. Using a research by design methodology we delivered our prototype as a modular web-based platform that leveraged the Matterport digital model platform. We qualitatively evaluated the prototype's usability and future development opportunities with 32 front-end users and 13 potential stakeholders. We received a wide gamut of responses that included: users feeling empowered by the greater accessibility, users finding a welcome common ground with comparable physical experiences, and users and potential stakeholders seeing the potential to re-create physical world experiences with modifications to the digital model along with on-site activation. Our potential stakeholders suggested ways in which GDOM could be integrated into the arts, education, and tourism to widen its utility and applicability. In future we see design potential in breaking out of the static presentation of the digital model and expanding our portable museum experience to work on-site as a complement to the remote experience. However, we recognise the way in which on-site activation integrate into users' typical activities can be tangential (McGookin et al., 2019) and this would necessitate further investigation into how to best integrate the experience on-site.

summary This paper presents intermediate results of an experimental research directed towards development of a method that uses additive manufacturing technology as a generative agent in architectural design process. The primary technique is to variate speed of material deposition of a 3D printer in order to produce undetermined textural effects. These effects demonstrate local variation of material distribution, which is treated as a consequence of interaction between machining parameters and material properties. Current stage of inquiry is concerned with studying the impact of these textural artefacts on structure. Experiments demonstrate that manipulating distribution of matter locally results in more optimal structural performance, it solves printability issues of overhanging geometry without the need for additional supports and provides variation to the surface. The research suggests aesthetic and structural benefits of applying the developed method for mass-customized fabrication. It questions the linear thinking that is predominant in the field of 3D printing and provides an approach that articulates interaction between digital and material logics as it directs the formation of an object that is informed by both.
