summary Sky view factor (SVF) is the ratio of radiation received by a planar surface from the sky to that received from the entire hemispheric radiating environment, in the past 20 years, it was more applied to urban-climatic areas such as urban air temperature analysis. With the urbanization and the development of cities, SVF has been paid more and more attention on as the important parameter in urban construction and city planning area because of increasing building coverage ratio to promote urban forms and help creating a more comfortable and sustainable urban residential building environment to citizens. Therefore, efficient, low cost, high precision, easy to operate, rapid building-wide SVF estimation method is necessary. In the field of image processing, semantic segmentation based on deep learning have attracted considerable research attention. This study presents a new method to estimate the SVF of residential environment by constructing a deep learning network for segmenting the sky areas from 360-degree camera images. As the result of this research, an easy-to-operate estimation system for SVF based on high efficiency sky label mask images database was developed.

summary The research of developing and improving pedestrian simulation model is essential in the process of analysing, evaluating and generating the architectural spaces that can not only satisfy circulation design condition but also promote sales by attracting customers. In terms of programming the simulation for commercial environment, current study attempts to use shortest-path algorithm generally and these results suggested that the model can reproduce approximate real trajectory within given environment. However, these studies also mentioned about necessity of considering shopper internal state and visual field. In this paper, in order to further incorporate the dynamic internal state (memory) into simulation model, we propose using iterative algorithm based on recurrent neural network (RNN) framework which allow it to exhibit temporal dynamic behaviour for a time sequence. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of these algorithms we introduce and assess the combination of multiple algorithms and calibration of probability by comparing with trajectories of the experiment.

summary In the context of data-driven culture, built space still maintains low responsiveness and adaptability. Part of this reality lies in the low resolution of live information we have about the behavior and condition of surfaces and materials. This research addresses this issue by exploring the development of a deformation-sensing composite membrane material system following a bottom-up approach and combining various technologies toward solving related technical issues—exploring conductivity properties of graphene and maximizing utilization within an architecture-related proof-of-concept scenario and a workflow including design, fabrication, and application methodology. Introduced simulation of intended deformation helps optimize the pattern of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) to maximize membrane sensitivity to a specific deformation type while minimizing material usage. Research explores various substrate materials and graphene incorporation methods with initial geometric exploration. Finally, research introduces data collection and machine learning techniques to train recognition of certain types of deformation (single point touch) on resistance changes. The final prototype demonstrates stable and symmetric readings of resistance in a static state and, after training, exhibits an 88% prediction accuracy of membrane shape on a labeled sample data-set through a pre-trained neural network. The proposed framework consisting of a simulation based, graphene-capturing fabrication method on stretchable surfaces, and includes initial exploration in neural network training shape detection, which combined, demonstrate an advanced approach to embedding intelligence.

summary The pedestrian flow of the building influences and determines the layout of the building's plan. For buildings with complex flow such as courts, airports, and stations, mixed flow line and low traffic efficiency are prone to be problems. However, the optimization of the layout of complex flow buildings usually relies on the architect's experience to judge and trials to improve. To overcome these problems, we attempt to establish a parametric model of buildings' plan (taking a typical court building as an example) with information about the different pedestrian flow and functional groups. Based on the Rhino and Grasshopper platform, we take the minimum of different pedestrian flow path length and the maximum of total spatial integration value and the minimum of total spatial entropy value as the starting point, combines pathfinding algorithm, Space Syntax and multi-objective genetic algorithm to optimize space allocation. The result shows that, compared with the original scheme, the intelligent optimised scheme can reduce the spatial waste caused by improper flow organisation, effectively improve space transportation capacity and spatial organization efficiency.

summary While there is a growing interest in using spatial network analysis methods such as Space Syntax to explore the socio-spatial aspects of the built form, some scholars refer to its main limitation of missing the measurements of buildings' fabric and density. Furthermore, new approaches that attempt to address these shortcomings, such as Urban Network Analysis toolbox, do not provide as comprehensive explorations as what Space Syntax does for the street network. Therefore, this paper proposes that a mixed-method applying both the tools in a complementary way enables a deeper understanding of the socio-spatial design metrics addressing density. Employing both tools on two cases of low and high-density neighbourhoods, the results demonstrate that the combination of these tools can minimise the shortcomings of each method individually, and lead to a more comprehensive understanding of socio-spatial design factors in relation with density.

summary The Architecture of ScarCity Game is a board game used as a pedagogical tool that challenges architecture students by involving them in a series of experimental design sessions to understand the design process of scarcity and the actual relation between the craft and the digital. This means "pragmatic delivery processes and material constraints, where the exchange between the artisan of handmade, representing local skills and technology of the digitally conceived is explored" (Huang 2013). The game focuses on understanding the different variables of the crafted design process of traditional communities under conditions of scarcity (Michel and Bevan 1992). This requires first analyzing the spatial environmental model of interaction, available human and natural resources, and the dynamic relationship of these variables in a digital era. In the first stage (Pre-Agency), the game set the concept of the craft by limiting students design exploration from a minimum possible perspective developing locally available resources and techniques. The key elements of the design process of traditional knowledge communities have to be identified (Preez 1984). In other words, this stage is driven by limited resources + chance + contingency. In the second stage (Post-Agency) students taking the architects´ role within this communities, have to speculate and explore the interface between the craft (local knowledge and low technological tools), and the digital represented by computation data, new technologies available and construction. This means the introduction of strategy + opportunity + chance as part of the design process. In this sense, the game has a life beyond its mechanics. This other life challenges the participants to exploit the possibilities of breaking the actual boundaries of design. The result is a tool to challenge conventional methods of teaching and leaning controlling a prescribed design process. It confronts the rules that professionals in this field take for granted. The game simulates a 'fake' reality by exploring in different ways with surveyed information. As a result, participants do not have anything 'real' to lose. Instead, they have all the freedom to innovate and be creative.

summary With fast development of new technologies built environment transitioned from a silent background of activities performed by users to another participant of those activities. Agency of interactive architecture is based on interpretation of input data, like users’ actions, their response to the spatial agency, data from environment or other actors, and changing its performance accordingly. Architectural components, environmental conditions and people are all treated as agents and closely correspond to Actor-Network Theory (ANT). This theory generally aims to reveal the complexities of socio-technological world. ANT incorporates a principle of generalized symmetry, it means that human and nonhuman (artifacts, organization structures, etc.) actors are incorporated into the same conceptual framework and assigned equal level of agency. By analysis of the agency of Interactive Architecture through ANT the paper provides insight on social role of this new emerging type of space and its influence on other participants on socio-technological relationship.

summary Embedded computation allows built space to be intelligent and get smarter, becoming interactive and gaining agency with ability not to merely adapt to changing conditions, but to process information and react, observe and learn, communicate and make decisions. The paper investigates agency of interactive space based on interpretation of input data, like users' response to the spatial agency, data from environment or other actors, and ability to change its performance accordingly. The research is focused on the role of interactive space as an active participant in social relationship communicating with users, constantly changing and having its' attitude. The research is aimed at defining social role of interactive environments and explains how they interact with users, what qualities are enabled by interactive behaviour and how do they influence space perception, revealing the significance of bi-directional communication between society and smart spaces. Interactive space does not just providing location for activities and facility for lifestyle, but influences these activities. Users and interactive space constitute one social network being constantly aware of each other establishing bi-directional communication.

summary This paper presents data visualizations of an intelligent environment that were designed to serve the needs of two stakeholder groups: visitors wanting to understand how that environment operates, and developers interested in optimizing it. The visualizations presented here were designed for [Amatria], a sentient sculpture built by the Living Architecture Systems Group (LASG) at Indiana University Bloomington, IN, USA, in the spring of 2018. They are the result of an extended collaboration between LASG and the Cyberinfrastructure for Network Science Center (CNS) at Indiana University. We introduce [Amatria], review related work on the visualization of smart environments and sentient architectures, and explain how the Data Visualization Literacy Framework (DVL-FW) can be used to develop visualizations of intelligent interactive systems (IIS) for these two stakeholder groups.

summary The scale and socio-technical complexity of contemporary architectural production poses challenges to researchers and practitioners interested in their description and analysis. This paper discusses the novel use of network analysis techniques to study a dataset comprising thousands of design conflicts reported during design coordination of a large project by a group of architects using BIM software. We discuss in detail three approaches to the use of network analysis techniques on these data, showing their potential to offer topological insights about the phenomenon of contemporary architectural design and construction, which complement other forms of architectural analysis.

summary COVID-19 was first reported in late December 2019 and quickly become a global health crisis. In the COVID-19 pandemic context, the dense and open characteristics make the public spaces a potential virus transmission hotspot. Therefore, it is extremely critical to adopt a more advanced and effective method in public environments to slow down its spread until a vaccine is widely used. A smart environment in the form of IoT, also known as the architecture of IoT, consists of three layers: perception layer, network layer, and application layer. A smart environment allows data and activities that happen in this environment to be collected, processed, and shared in real-time through various sensors. It can be introduced for early detection, tracking, and monitoring of potential confirmed cases. The smart environment is considered one of the most promising approaches to face and tackle the current scenario. However, research focusing on the potential of IoT smart environment in reaction to COVID-19 is still meager. Therefore, this paper identifies the smart environments potential based on the concept of IoT architectures three layers and further discusses how IoT can be introduced in public spaces to help battle the pandemic.

summary The timber industry is expanding, including construction wood product applications such as glue-laminated wood products (R. Sikkema et al., 2023). To boost further utilisation of engineered wood products in architecture, further development and optimisation of related tectonic systems is required. Integration of digital design technologies in this endeavour presents opportunities for a more performative and spatially diverse architecture production, even in construction contexts typified by limited means and/or resources. This paper reports on historic precedent case study research that informs an ongoing larger study focussing on novel algorithmic methods for the design and production of lightweight, large-span, catenary glulam roof structures. Given their structural operation in full tension, catenary-based roof structures substantially reduce material needs when compared with those relying on straight beams (Wong and Crolla, 2019). Yet, the manufacture of their non-standard geometries typically requires costly bespoke hardware setups, having resulted in recent projects trending away from the more spatially engaging geometric experiments of the second half of the 20th century. The study hypothesis that the evolutionary design optimisation of this tectonic system has the potential to re-open and expand its practically available design solution space. This paper covers the review of a range of built projects employing catenary glulam roof system, starting from seminal historic precedents like the Festival Hall for the Swiss National Exhibition EXPO 1964 (A. Lozeron, Swiss, 1964) and the Wilkhahn Pavilions (Frei Otto, Germany, 1987), to contemporary examples, including the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre (HCMA Architecture + Design, Canada, 2016). It analysis their structural concept, geometric and spatial complexity, fabrication and assembly protocols, applied construction detailing solutions, and more, with as aim to identify methods, tools, techniques, and construction details that can be taken forward in future research aimed at minimising construction complexity. Findings from this precedent study form the basis for the evolutionary-algorithmic design and construction method development that is part of the larger study. By expanding the tectonic system’s practically applicable architecture design solution space and facilitating architects’ access to a low-tech producible, spatially versatile, lightweight, eco-friendly, wooden roof structure typology, this study contributes to environmentally sustainable building.

summary The article presents the assessment method for large (horizontally spread) urban investment and its visual impact on the cityscape using digital analyses. The visual impact assessment is often used in relation to facilities which dominate in the cityscape, mainly tall buildings. Various studies, however, examine the impact of wide but relatively low-rising buildings and their impact on the cityscape. The article presents a methodology for the assessment of the visual impact and a case study for a building facility comprising several tightly developed and medium height blocks of buildings in a city center of a significant historical value in Gdañsk, Poland. The research has been based on the Visual Impact Size method (VIS) and a city model consisting of a regular cloud of points (Digital Surface Model). The simulation has been developed using a dedicated C++ software (developed by author). The study aimed at assessing the following: a) to what degree such an urban investment can influence the cityscape; b) how the impact can be analyzed using digital techniques, and c) what input parameters of the analysis are crucial for satisfactory accuracy of its results.

summary In this paper, we are aiming to present a methodology for generation, manipulation and form finding of structural typologies using variational autoencoders, a machine learning model based on neural networks. We are giving a detailed description of the neural network architecture used as well as the data representation based on the concept of a 3D-canvas with voxelized wireframes. In this 3D-canvas, the input geometry of the building typologies is represented through their connectivity map and subsequently augmented to increase the size of the training set. Our variational autoencoder model then learns a continuous latent distribution of the input data from which we can sample to generate new geometry instances, essentially hybrids of the initial input geometries. Finally, we present the results of these computational experiments and lay out the conclusions as well as outlook for future research in this field.

summary Recent developments in indoor positioning technology means gathering personal interaction data is possible however, the process of analysing this data to determine where and when interactions occur indoors is not yet standardised.This paper proposes a method to gather and examine indoor positioning data to infer face-to-face interactions indoors. The case study looks specifically at indoor office environment however the principles shown can be applied to other indoor spaces. This paper explores a high-level technological methodology that gathers indoor positioning data from users. A formula is used to calculate if, when and where interactions occur over a floor-plan, as well as visualising these interactions to highlight high and low interaction areas. The system considers the proximity between the individuals, the angle between their forward physical orientation, and any obstructions that might divide individuals from each other. The information presented in this paper can be used as a theoretical baseline to inform future post-occupancy evaluation methods. Additionally, this paper demonstrates the merit of using indoor positioning systems to test the effectiveness of design principles in encouraging face-to-face interactions of the users.

We are mainly interested in using VR tools for designers in the early phases of their design. In our opinion VR tools can help to bring back a better understanding of space and scale which have been lost a little bit in the last century with the change from analogue to digital tools. After teaching architectural and urban design for many years we can clearly say that this effect is still ongoing and it is time that we develop digital tools that try to reverses thi effect. We will then concentrate within this paper on discussing some aspects of data reduction that are important to be able to use these tools in the design process. We are also showing how we use our interfaces presenting some results of student projects for a design in Hong Kong and the strategies and methods for using VR for a ongoing work on a project about the establishment of a so called "bicycle highway" in the city of Graz in Austria.

summary Typical adaptive facades rely on mechanical actuators that respond to the outdoor climate and regulate its effect on indoor spaces. With the emergence of ubiquitous computing, several studies have independently utilized the latent properties of programmable materials, such as the hygroscopic properties of wood and the difference in expansion coefficient of metals, to passively program material response. Motion stimuli vary for each material however, involving changes in humidity and temperature fluctuation for wood and metals respectively. This paper introduces Hygromorphic-Thermobimetal (HMTM), as a low-tech low-cost passive programmable composite. A series of physical experiments are conducted to deduce design parameters that induce specific actuation mechanisms based on the stimulation of both hygroscopic properties in wood and metal expansion through temperature variation. This allows for an extended implementation of the hygroscopic properties of wood and its actuation configurations in hot arid climates, where variation in temperature, rather than humidity, is more dominant.

title Printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic Multi-Bias Additive Manufacturing

summary A research team at Florida International University Robotics and Digital Fabrication Lab has developed a novel method for 3d-printing curved open grid core sandwich structures using a thermoplastic extruder mounted on a robotic arm. This print-on-print additive manufacturing (AM) method relies on the 3d modeling software Rhinoceros and its parametric software plugin Grasshopper with Kuka-Parametric Robotic Control (Kuka-PRC) to convert NURBS surfaces into multi-bias additive manufacturing (MBAM) toolpaths. While several high-profile projects including the University of Stuttgart ICD/ITKE Research Pavilions 2014–15 and 2016–17, ETH-Digital Building Technologies project Levis Ergon Chair 2018, and 3D printed chair using Robotic Hybrid Manufacturing at Institute of Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) 2019, have previously demonstrated the feasibility of 3d printing with either MBAM or sandwich structures, this method for printing Compound-Curved Sandwich Structures with Robotic MBAM combines these methods offering the possibility to significantly reduce the weight of spanning or cantilevered surfaces by incorporating the structural logic of open grid-core sandwiches with MBAM toolpath printing. Often built with fiber reinforced plastics (FRP), sandwich structures are a common solution for thin wall construction of compound curved surfaces that require a high strength-to-weight ratio with applications including aerospace, wind energy, marine, automotive, transportation infrastructure, architecture, furniture, and sports equipment manufacturing. Typical practices for producing sandwich structures are labor intensive, involving a multi-stage process including (1) the design and fabrication of a mould, (2) the application of a surface substrate such as FRP, (3) the manual application of a light-weight grid-core material, and (4) application of a second surface substrate to complete the sandwich. There are several shortcomings to this moulded manufacturing method that affect both the formal outcome and the manufacturing process: moulds are often costly and labor intensive to build, formal geometric freedom is limited by the minimum draft angles required for successful removal from the mould, and customization and refinement of product lines can be limited by the need for moulds. While the most common material for this construction method is FRP, our proof-of-concept experiments relied on low-cost thermoplastic using a specially configured pellet extruder. While the method proved feasible for small representative examples there remain significant challenges to the successful deployment of this manufacturing method at larger scales that can only be addressed with additional research. The digital workflow includes the following steps: (1) Create a 3D digital model of the base surface in Rhino, (2) Generate toolpaths for laminar printing in Grasshopper by converting surfaces into lists of oriented points, (3) Generate the structural grid-core using the same process, (4) Orient the robot to align in the direction of the substructure geometric planes, (5) Print the grid core using MBAM toolpaths, (6) Repeat step 1 and 2 for printing the outer surface with appropriate adjustments to the extruder orientation. During the design and printing process, we encountered several challenges including selecting geometry suitable for testing, extruder orientation, calibration of the hot end and extrusion/movement speeds, and deviation between the computer model and the physical object on the build platen. Physical models varied from their digital counterparts by several millimeters due to material deformation in the extrusion and cooling process. Real-time deviation verification studies will likely improve the workflow in future studies.

summary Within the domain of computational modelling for cities, the study of complex systems has stimulated a body of research (through mathematical and scientific modelling) that has given greater insight into the characteristic of cities. These characteristics share principles in their hierarchical organisation and formation over time with that of complex living systems. The central focus of the research lies in two parts: the first is the understanding of cities as complex systems that share principles with complex living systems; the second is the computational modelling of cities as complex systems. This paper presents a computational model capable of generating urban tissues of differentiated spatial and morphological patterns that emerge over time. The generative process is driven by simultaneous interaction and exchanges between block and network systems.

title BIM and IoT for the AEC Industry: A systematic literature mapping

summary The AEC industry has been facing a digital transformation for improving services involved in buildings lifecycle, fostered by two disruptive technologies: Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Internet of Things (IoT). However, the literature lacks discussions regarding applications and challenges of BIM and IoT systems in the AEC. This Systematic Literature Mapping addresses this gap through search, analysis, and classification of 75 journal article abstracts published between 2015 and 2019. An increase of articles over the period is observed, predominantly with technical and processual solutions for Construction and Operation and Maintenance. The interoperability of data is a key challenge to organizations.
