summary COVID-19 was first reported in late December 2019 and quickly become a global health crisis. In the COVID-19 pandemic context, the dense and open characteristics make the public spaces a potential virus transmission hotspot. Therefore, it is extremely critical to adopt a more advanced and effective method in public environments to slow down its spread until a vaccine is widely used. A smart environment in the form of IoT, also known as the architecture of IoT, consists of three layers: perception layer, network layer, and application layer. A smart environment allows data and activities that happen in this environment to be collected, processed, and shared in real-time through various sensors. It can be introduced for early detection, tracking, and monitoring of potential confirmed cases. The smart environment is considered one of the most promising approaches to face and tackle the current scenario. However, research focusing on the potential of IoT smart environment in reaction to COVID-19 is still meager. Therefore, this paper identifies the smart environments potential based on the concept of IoT architectures three layers and further discusses how IoT can be introduced in public spaces to help battle the pandemic.

summary Although parametric modelling and digital design tools have become ubiquitous in digital design, there is a limited understanding of how designers apply them in their design processes (Yu et al., 2014). This paper looks at the use of GHShot versioning tool developed by the authors (Cristie & Joyce, 2018; 2019) used to capture and track changes and progression of parametric models to understand early-stage design exploration and collaboration empirically. We introduce both development history graph-based metrics (macro-process) and parametric model and geometry change metric (micro-process) as frameworks to explore and understand the captured progression data. These metrics, applied to data collected from three cohorts of classroom collaborative design exercises, exhibited students' distinct modification patterns such as major and complex creation processes or minor parameter explorations. Finally, with the metrics' applicability as an objective language to describe the (collaborative) design process, we recommend using versioning for more data-driven insight into parametric design exploration processes.

summary The paper will give an overview of our experiments in the past years in developing different interfaces and workflows for the use of low cost Head Mounted Displays (HMD) for Virtual Reality solution. We are mainly interested in using VR tools for designers in the early phases of their design. In our opinion VR tools can help to bring back a better understanding of space and scale which have been lost a little bit in the last century with the change from analogue to digital tools. After teaching architectural and urban design for many years we can clearly say that this effect is still ongoing and it is time that we develop digital tools that try to reverses thi effect. We will then concentrate within this paper on discussing some aspects of data reduction that are important to be able to use these tools in the design process. We are also showing how we use our interfaces presenting some results of student projects for a design in Hong Kong and the strategies and methods for using VR for a ongoing work on a project about the establishment of a so called "bicycle highway" in the city of Graz in Austria.

summary ARgan is a geometrically complex bamboo sculpture that relied on Mixed Reality (MR) for its joint creation by multiple sculptors and used latest Augmented Reality (AR) technology to guide manual fabrication actions. It was built at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in the fall of 2019 by thirty participants of a design-and-build workshop on the integration of AR in construction. As part of its construction workflow, holographic setups were created on multiple devices, including a series of Microsoft HoloLenses and several handheld Smartphones, all linked simultaneously to a single digital base model to interactively guide the manufacturing process. This paper critically evaluates the experience of extending recent AR and MR tool developments towards applications that centre on creative collaborative production. Using ARgan as a demonstrator project, its developed workflow is assessed on its ability to transform a geometrically complex digitally drafted design to its final physically built form, highlighting the necessary strategic integration of variability as an opportunity to relax notions on design precision and exact control. The paper concludes with a plea for digital technology's ability to stimulate dialogue and collaboration in creative production and augment craftsmanship, thus providing greater agency and more diverse design output.

summary There has been a recent increase in the exploration of mereological systems, speculating on how digital design, assembly and reconfiguration of digital materials (Gershenfeld, 2015) enables digitally informed physical worlds that change over time. Besides opportunities for construction and design automation, there is a potential to reimagine how multiple stakeholders can participate in the computational decision-making process, using the benefits of the mass customization of logistics (Retsin, 2019). This paper presents a research-by-design project that applies a digital and discrete material system to high-rise housing in Hong Kong. The project has developed an integrated approach to design, construction, and inhabitation, using a system of discrete parts which can be assembled in various apartment configurations, to incorporate varying occupants requirements and facilitate negotiations and changes over time.

summary Active bending projects today employ highly specialized, complex computer software and machines for design, simulation, and materialization. At times, these projects lack a sensitivity to cultures limited in high-tech infrastructures but rich in low-tech knowledges. Situated Computations is an approach to computational design that grounds it in the social world by acknowledging historical, cultural, and material contexts of design and making, as well as the social and political structures that drive them. In this article, we ask, how can a Situated Computations approach to contemporary active bending broaden the design space and uplift low-tech cultural practices? To answer this question, we design and build "The Infinite Line"- an active bending pavilion that draws on the history, material practices, and knowledges in design in the Trinidad Carnival - for the 2019 International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures (IASS) exhibition in Barcelona, Spain. We conclude that Situated Computations provide an opportunity to integrate local knowledges, histories, design practices, and material behaviors as drivers in active bending approaches, so that structure, material practices, and cultural settings are considered concurrently.

summary This paper describes the Urban Structure Synthesizer (USS), a research prototype based on deep learning that generates diagrams of morphologically consistent urban fabrics from context-rich urban datasets. This work is part of a larger research on computational analysis of the relationship between urban context and morphology. USS relies on a data collection method that extracts GIS data and converts it to diagrams with context information (Rhee et al., 2019). The resulting dataset with context-rich diagrams is used to train a Wasserstein GAN (WGAN) model, which learns how to synthesize novel urban fabric diagrams with the morphological and contextual qualities present in the dataset. The model is also trained with a random vector in the input, which is later used to enable parametric control and variation for the urban fabric diagram. Finally, the resulting diagrams are translated to 3D geometric entities using computer vision techniques and geometric modeling. The diagrams generated by USS suggest that a learning-based method can be an alternative to methods that rely on experts to build rule sets or parametric models to grasp the morphological qualities of the urban fabric.

summary As Hong Kong constructs increasingly high-density, high-rise public housing estates to increase land use efficiency, public in-between spaces are more constrained, which impacts the quality of social relations, movements and daily practices of residents (Shelton et al. 2011; Tang et al. 2019). Current planning practices are focused on the achievement of quantitative performance measures, rather than qualitative design considerations that support residents experiences and community interaction. This paper presents a new methodology that combines urban analysis and generative design for the regeneration of social housing estates, based on the spatial and social qualities of their in-between spaces.

summary Recently, indoor-intelligent services like "Tele-presence" have made quite an advancement. Therefore, to completely 1) understand the diverse indoor environment, 2) efficiently calculate similarity for semantic spaces and 3) for defining an efficient path movement for an augmented reality-based Avatar; we propose spatial features computation, graphical representation and Topology-based graph-similarity measure for complex domains to overcome the limited visibility of an Avatar. Thus, collision with the surrounding objects in a given indoor-space can be avoided. This study begins by securing spatial features of objects, e.g., furniture, doorways, etc., of an indoor environment from an FBSMAP (Function-Behaviour-Structure Map). Then, we establish a method for defining similarity for locations and paths.

summary The extensive applications of digital models might decrease the capacity of physical model-making for perceptual thinking and enlarge the gap between architects and physical space with limited visual experience. This study aims to propose a reverse process for realizing translations between physical and digital model-making methods from which architects could maximize their initial ideas in conceptual design while allowing for rational digitalization in the detailed design. A review of Reverse Engineering architectural applications is presented and the hybrid method is proposed and examined in a freeform design case. The research shows that in the first translation phase, from handmade physical models to parametric digital models, freeform geometry could be better parameterized in a low degree of deformation based on photogrammetry. Meanwhile, in the second translation phase, from detailed digital models to large-scale physical models, the digitally-driven fabrication could be applied more precisely and automatically based on error handling by 3D laser scanning. Moreover, the process and algorithms developed for the hybrid model-making method indicate the possibility of being applied to further freeform architectural design cases.

summary In this paper, a novel design of 3D printing system is presented. We proposed a large-scale 3D printing system with tensegrity structure and cablesuspended parallel robotic system(CPR). It has an advantage in the construction field, especially for building habitats in extreme environment such as Mars. Compare to a currently used 3D printer, and it has lightweight and a wide range of workspace. We implemented a 3D printer with CPR and tensegrity framework. The project is an initiation of a long-term research; accordingly, this paper limits its work scope by demonstrating the 3D printability of the system with CPR and developing a tensegrity framework. To validate 3D printability, we independently tested two scenarios. One is a table-size 3D printing validation as a fast prototype, and the other one is a small building-size 3D printing for testing large-scale 3D printability. As a validation, we used an LED bulb attached on a 3D printer head to trace its movements in workspace. We illustrate that the use of CPR is highly effective and scalable system for a large-scale 3D printing; additionally, tensegrity could be an effective alternative for its structural framework.

summary When creating new kinds of origami, people design origami creases pattern on 2D plane. Consequently, people unable to precisely envision the 3D folded shape. However, in architecture, civil engineering and industrial applications, an accurate layout is important. This research is to compile an algorithm for creating origami forms with developability and flat-foldability on the target surface, more specifically, by setting a target surface first, generating a Miura-ori tessellation from the geometric configuration of a target surface. We achieve creating origami forms on a target surface, so that we can generate architectural surfaces with folded structure and accurately layout for construction. Our approach facilitates designing a free-form origami structure upon parametric and 3D modelling software for artists, designers and architects.

summary Augmented graphical thinking operates by integrating algorithmic, heuristic, and manufacturing processes. The Representation and Ideation Laboratory (RILAB-2018) exercise begins with the application of a parametric definition developed by the team of teachers, allowing for the construction of structural systems by the means of the combination of segmental shells and bending-active. The main objetive is the construction of a scientific model of simulation for bending-active laminar structures has brought into reality trustworthy previews for architectural envelopes through the interaction of parametrized relational variables. This way we put designers in a strategic role for the building of the pre-analysis models, allowing more preciseness at the time of picking and defining materials, shapes, spaces and technologies and thus minimizing the decisions based solely in the definition of structural typological categories, local tradition or direct experience. The results verify that the strategic integration of models of geometric physical optimization and spatial representation greatly expand the capabilities in the construction of the complex system that operates in the act of projecting architecture.

title Desires and Possibilities in Virtual Education

summary The sudden migration towards virtual classes caused by the Covid-19 crisis has demanded the application and development of different resources. Both students and teachers had to be flexible enough to face this change. Two annual university courses in Design Education will be examined: 2019 and 2020, shifting from face-to-face to online teaching. The information compared derives mainly from surveys and the final evaluation scores. The main benefits and drawbacks will be discussed, concerning the outcomes of the course and the experiences of teachers and students. The advantages of reformulating the course and the possibilities of online teaching were considered and exploited as far as possible, in the limited context of a public university in a developing country. Many positive strategies derived from this transformation should be retained when classroom meetings are allowed. Future courses should incorporate blended, hybrid methods of instruction that regard the specific requirements of design education.
