summary To allow non-designers' involvement in design projects new methods are needed. Co-design gives the same opportunity to all the multidisciplinary participants to co-create ideas simultaneously. Nevertheless, current co-design processes involving such users tend to limit their contribution to the proposal of basic design ideas only through brainstorming. The co-design approach needs to be enhanced by a properly suited representational ecosystem supporting active participation and by conscious use of structured verbal exchanges giving awareness of the creative process. In this respect, we developed two social virtual reality co-design systems, and a co-design verbal exchange methodology to favour participants' awareness of the co-creative process. By using such representations and verbal exchanges, participants could co-create with more ease by benefiting from being informed of the process and from the collective immersion, empowering their participation. This paper presents the rationale behind this approach of using Social VR in co-design and the feedback of three co-design workshops.

summary In Brazil, the evaluation processes of building architectural designs of Airports Passenger Terminal (PT) are carried out manually. It depends on the architects' knowledge, leading to possible errors. On the other hand, the rule checking in BIM-modeled building projects opens up new horizons for this type of activity. Based on Code Checking concepts, this paper presents a method for automating rule checking for building code in building architectural design of PT. Following the aspects of Design Science Research, it is developed in two stages: Construction (theoretical foundation, creating rule checking for the PT, implementation of the rules in BIM softwares for code checking and validation) and Evaluation of artefact. This paper shows a series of problems resulting from the evaluation of PT using traditional methods. It can be concluded that the use of rules for regulatory code checking with BIM allows standardization in the evaluation of architectural design of PT.

summary Building design decision-making is associated with uncertainties due to variations over time and unpredictable parameters. There is a growing demand for probabilistic methods, i.e., uncertainty and sensitivity analyses to handle the uncertainties in building design. This research intends to encourage the application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for addressing design uncertainties affecting building energy performance. The mapping between BIM (Revit and Dynamo) and a customized model-based energy analysis tool in Excel is investigated to translate architectural models to energy models and conduct the probabilistic analyses. The application of this method is demonstrated with a test case of a hypothetical residential unit in College Station, Texas, USA. Input variables in this example are the thermal properties of building elements, and the two simulation outputs are annual heating and cooling energy consumption, and deviation from comfort temperature. The results indicate the probability distribution of simulation outputs and the importance factor of each design input. This method deals with uncertainties and provides a more reliable and robust basis for design decision-making.

summary In a country with continental dimensions like Brazil, air transport plays a strategic role in the development of the country. In recent years, initiatives have been promoted to boost the development of air transport, among which the BIM BR strategy stands out, instituted by decree n-9.983 (2019), decree n-10.306 (2020) and more recently, the publication of the airport design manual (SAC, 2021). In this context, this work presents partial results of a doctoral research based on the Design Science Research (DSR) method for the application of Machine Learning (ML) techniques in the Artificial Intelligence (AI) subarea, aiming to support SAC airport project analysts in the phase of project evaluation. Based on a set of training and test data corresponding to airport projects, two ML algorithms were trained. Preliminary results indicate that the use of ML algorithms enables a new scenario to be explored by teams of airport design analysts in Brazil.

summary This paper examines the process and the importance of designing and implementing intelligent, informed and bespoke information modeling solutions within the architectural design discipline. Along with the need for such tools comes the need for fluency in architectural principles, digital tool facility, and computational development skill sets (the combination are, still uncommon). This skill set combination are becoming more and more necessary for design teams to incorporate. This paper argues (through a series of case study projects produced by an internal platform) a way forward for the architectural design discipline through intelligent, informed and bespoke tool sets tailored to the needs of architectural designers.

summary Metal joints play a relevant role in space frame constructions, being responsible for large amount of the overall material and fabrication cost. Space frames which are constructed with standardized metal joints are constrained to repetitive structures and topologies. For customized space frames, the fabrication of individual metal joints still remains a challenge. Traditional fabrication methods such as sand casting are labour intensive, while direct 3D metal printing is too expensive and slow for the large volumes needed in architecture.This research investigates the use of Binder Jetting technology to 3D print sand molds for casting bespoke metal joints in architecture. Using this approach, a large number of custom metal joints can be fabricated economically in short time. By automating the generation of the joint geometry and the corresponding mold system, an efficient digital process chain from design to fabrication is established. Several design studies for cast metal joints are presented. The approach is successfully tested on the example of a full scale space frame structure incorporating almost two hundred custom aluminum joints.

summary Brickwork is the oldest construction method still in use. Digital technologies, in turn, enabled new methods of representation and automation for bricklaying. While automation explored different approaches, representation was limited to declarative methods, as parametric filling algorithms. Alternatively, this work proposes a framework for automated brickwork using a machine learning model based on image-to-image translation (Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks). The framework consists of creating a dataset, training a model for each bond, and converting the output images into vectorial data for robotic assembly. Criteria such as: reaching wall boundary accuracy, avoidance of unsupported bricks, and brick's position accuracy were individually evaluated for each bond. The results demonstrate that the proposed framework fulfils boundary filling and respects overall bonding structural rules. Size accuracy demonstrated inferior performance for the scale tested. The association of this method with 'self-calibrating' robots could overcome this problem and be easily implemented for on-site.

summary Recent developments in indoor positioning technology means gathering personal interaction data is possible however, the process of analysing this data to determine where and when interactions occur indoors is not yet standardised.This paper proposes a method to gather and examine indoor positioning data to infer face-to-face interactions indoors. The case study looks specifically at indoor office environment however the principles shown can be applied to other indoor spaces. This paper explores a high-level technological methodology that gathers indoor positioning data from users. A formula is used to calculate if, when and where interactions occur over a floor-plan, as well as visualising these interactions to highlight high and low interaction areas. The system considers the proximity between the individuals, the angle between their forward physical orientation, and any obstructions that might divide individuals from each other. The information presented in this paper can be used as a theoretical baseline to inform future post-occupancy evaluation methods. Additionally, this paper demonstrates the merit of using indoor positioning systems to test the effectiveness of design principles in encouraging face-to-face interactions of the users.

summary This paper presents an application of Decentralised Autonomous Organisation (DAO) in the field of design and AEC industry. The model is applied in the realm of shape grammar proposing the possibility of allowing multiple grammarists to collaborate in the definition of a new grammar within a Blockchain environment that acts as a distributed ledger. DAOs systems and Blockchain are introduced as well as shape grammar and its fundamental rules. The collaborative nature of a DAO with the inner logic of shape grammar, which bases its principle and rules in multiple variations and combinations of simple initial shapes, brings to the problem of recording and validating changes and improvements in the design chain. For this reason, a voting system to govern the process is introduced, based on both quantitative values, i.e. number of votes, and qualitative power, i.e. the reputation of who votes, applying a factor that scales the vote according to the expertise of the voter. An example is provided showing a possible scenario in a design environment along with validation criteria, and predicting future stages applied in an always more BIM-oriented practice.

summary We present a Blockchain collaboration mechanism on optimisation problems between distributed participants who work with building information modelling tools. The blockchain mechanism is capable of executing smart contracts, acting as a reward mechanism of independent designers attempting to collaborate or compete on optimising a design performance problem. Earlier work has described the potential integration through different levels of Computer Aided Design and Blockchain. We present an expanded version of that integration and we showcase how a team can collaboratively and competitively work, using BIM tools, through the blockchain. The original contribution of the paper is the use of the design optimisation performance as a consensus mechanism for block writing in blockchains. To accomplish that we introduce mechanisms for BIM to Blockchain Integration but also describe a special category of blockchains for architectural design and the built environment. The paper concludes with an analysis of the relationship between trust and values as encapsulated in the blockchain and how these could affect the design collaboration.

summary Numerous studies on Space Syntax and Evidence-based Design explored occupancy and movements in the built environment using traditional methods for behavior mapping, such as observation and surveys. This approach, however, has majorly focused on studying such behaviors as aggregated results -totals or averages- to corroborate the idea that people's interactions are outcomes of the influence of space. The research presented in this paper focuses on capturing human occupancy with a high spatiotemporal data resolution of 1 sq.ft per second (0.1 sq.mt./s). This research adapts computer vision to obtain large occupancy datasets in a hospitalization setting for one week, providing opportunities to explore correlations among spatial configurations, architectural programs, organizational activities planned and unplanned, and time. The vision is to develop new analytics for building occupancy dynamics, with the purpose of endorsing the integration of a temporal dimension into architectural research. This study introduces the "Isovist-minute"; a metric that captures the relationship between space and occupancy, towards a point of interest, in a dynamic sequence.

summary The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect is pronounced in dense urban developments, and particular an issue in the case study city of Parramatta, where temperature increases are impacting use of public space, health, and economic productivity. To mitigate against elevated temperatures in built up areas, this research explores the optimisation of paving material layouts through using an evolutionary algorithm. High albedo (reflective) materials are objectively cooler than low albedo (absorbent) materials yet tend to be more expensive. To reduce the amount of heat absorbent pavement materials whilst keeping in mind material costs, a range of materials of different albedo levels (reflectivity) can be assigned on the same path using an evolutionary algorithm to optimise the coolest materials for the cheapest price. Over the course of this paper, this research aim will be approached using visual scripting software such as Grasshopper to simulate daylight analysis and to generate an optimisation algorithm. Previous research on the topics of UHI have revealed different methods for solving specific problems, all focusing on using software analysis to determine an informed decision on construction. The paper contributes via a computational approach of material selection to battle urban heat island effects.

summary With the increasing applications of computational methods in the field of design optimization, intelligent metaheuristic algorithms are playing a more important role in building performance optimization. To enable the integration of optimization algorithms with Building Information Modeling (BIM), this research implemented the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm on Revit + Dynamo, which is a parametric BIM platform. A MultiObjective PSO (MOPSO) Solver has been developed in Dynamo using MATLAB and C# programming languages. The methodology of the research and the validation studies are presented in the paper. The validation studies prove the effectiveness of the MOPSO Solver for both standard optimization test functions and an optimization example of a simplified building design.

summary The potential of parametric associative models to explore large ranges of different designs is limited by our ability to manually create and modify them. While computation has been successfully used to generate variations by optimizing input parameters, adding or changing ‘components’ and ‘links’ of these models has typically been manual and human driven. The intellectual overhead and challenges of manually creating and maintaining complex parametric models has limited their usefulness in early stages of design exploration, where a quicker and wider design search is preferred. Recent methods called Meta Parametric Design using Cartesian Genetic Programming (CGP) specifically tailored to operate on parametric models, allows computational generation and topological modification for parametric models. This paper proposes the refinement of Meta Parametric techniques to quickly generate and manipulate models with a higher level of control than existing; enabling a more natural human centric user-directed design exploration process. Opening new possibilities for the computer to act as a co-creator: able to generate its own novel solutions, steered at a high-level by user(s) and able to develop convergent or divergent solutions over an extended interaction session, replicating in a faster way a human design assistant.

summary Vertical farms and gardens are not new in dense urban environments, but few examples further explore the architectural potential and possibilities of the form to apply the same design approach to existing surfaces and walls of buildings. In addition, there is a design opportunity to exploit existing wall surfaces as 'analogue' media screens by using the vertical farm and garden as a medium of representation. In this paper we explore the opportunity for new design possibilities to achieve a hybrid architectural wall system as a reciprocal retrofit for existing building surfaces, integrating a vertical micro-farm and media screen. This architectural opportunity is explored through agile methods and the early design stages of a hybrid green media wall, PixelGreen. PixelGreen will be retrofitted to an existing wall of a high-rise building to convey mediated, graphical, artistic content and provide edible plant micro-farming simultaneously. The physical proof of concept is given through a modular mock-up with a programmed UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) serving as the 'agent' for constant updating of mediated content, maintenance and a regular farming cycle. The outcome of this approach provides preliminary insight into how to feasibly implement a hybrid green media wall with autonomous robotics and computation technology.

summary The use of mixed reality (MR) for landscape simulation has attracted attention recently. MR can produce a realistic landscape simulation by merging a three-dimensional computer graphic (3DCG) model of a new building on a real space. One challenge with MR that remains to be tackled is occlusion. Properly handling occlusion is important for the understanding of the spatial relationship between physical and virtual objects. When the occlusion targets move or the target's shape changes, depth-based methods using a special camera have been applied for dynamic occlusion handling. However, these methods have a limitation of the distance to obtain depth information and are unsuitable for outdoor landscape simulation. This study focuses on a dynamic occlusion handling method for MR-based landscape simulation. We developed a real-time semantic segmentation system to perform dynamic occlusion handling. We designed this system for use in mobile devices with client-server communication for real-time semantic segmentation processing in mobile devices. Additionally, we used a normal monocular camera for practice use.

summary By investigating methods for using computation and digital manufacturing technologies to integrate material properties with architectural design tools, the research in this paper aims at revealing new potentials for the use of wood in architecture. Through an explorative approach, material particularities and fabrication methods are explored and combined into new workflows and architectural expressions. The research looks into different properties and capacities of wood, but the main part of the experimentation revolves around crooked oak logs. Due to their irregularities, these logs are normally discarded. However, through the methods suggested in this research, they are instead matched with unique processing informed by their divergence. The research presents a workflow for handling the discrete shapes of sawlogs in a system that both involve the collecting of material, scanning/digitization, handling of a stockpile, computer analysis, design, and robotic manufacturing. The workflow includes multiple custom-made solutions for handling the complex and different shapes and data of wood logs in a highly digitized machining and fabrication environment. The suggested method is established through investigations of wood as a natural material, studies of the production lines in the current wood industry, and experimentation in our in-house laboratory facilities. This up-cycling of discarded wood supply establishes a non-standard workflow that utilizes non-standard material stock and leads to a critical articulation of today’s linear material economy. The research thereby gives an example of how the natural forms and properties of sawlogs can be directly used to generate new structures and spatial conditions.

summary Ashen Cabin, designed by HANNAH, is a small building 3D-printed from concrete and clothed in a robotically fabricated envelope made of irregular ash wood logs. From the ground up, digital design and fabrication technologies are intrinsic to the making of this architectural prototype, facilitating fundamentally new material methods, tectonic articulations, forms of construction, and architectural design languages. Ashen Cabin challenges preconceived notions about material standards in wood. The cabin utilizes wood infested by the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) for its envelope, which, unfortunately, is widely considered as ‘waste’. At present, the invasive EAB threatens to eradicate most of the 8.7 billion ash trees in North America (USDA, 2019). Due to their challenging geometries, most infested ash trees cannot be processed by regular sawmills and are therefore regarded as unsuitable for construction. Infested and dying ash trees form an enormous and untapped material resource for sustainable wood construction. By implementing high precision 3D scanning and robotic fabrication, the project upcycles Emerald-Ash-Borer-infested ‘waste wood’ into an abundantly available, affordable, and morbidly sustainable building material for the Anthropocene. Using a KUKA KR200/2 with a custom 5hp band saw end effector at the Cornell Robotic Construction Laboratory (RCL), the research team can saw irregular tree logs into naturally curved boards of various and varying thicknesses. The boards are arrayed into interlocking SIP façade panels, and by adjusting the thickness of the bandsaw cut, the robotically carved timber boards can be assembled as complex single curvature surfaces or double-curvature surfaces. The undulating wooden surfaces accentuate the building’s program and yet remain reminiscent of the natural log geometry which they are derived from. The curvature of the wood is strategically deployed to highlight moments of architectural importance such as windows, entrances, roofs, canopies, or provide additional programmatic opportunities such as integrated shelving, desk space, or storage.
