summary This paper aims to propose an approach to automated classifying building element instance in BIM using deep learning-based 3D object classification algorithm. Recently, studies related to checking or validating engine of BIM object for ensuring data integrity of BIM instances are getting attention. As a part of this research, this paper train recognition models that are targeted at basic building element and interior element using 3D object recognition technique that uses images of objects as inputs. Object recognition is executed in two stages; 1) class of object (e.g. wall, window, seating furniture, toilet fixture and etc.), 2) sub-type of specific classes (e.g. Toilet or Urinal). Using the trained models, BIM plug-in prototype is developed and the performance of this AI-based approach with test BIM model is checked. We expect this recognition approach to help ensure the integrity of BIM data and contribute to the practical use of BIM.

summary This paper explores automated recognition of elements in interior design pictures for an intelligent design reference management system. Precedent design references have a significant role to help architects, designer and even clients in general architecture design process. Pictures are one of the representation that could exactly show a kind of design idea and knowledge. Due to the velocity, variety and volume of reference pictures data with growth of references platform, it is hard and time-consuming to handle the data with current manual way. To solve this problem , this paper depicts a deep learning-based approach to figuring out design elements and recognizing the design feature of them on the interior pictures using faster-RCNN and CNN algorithms. The targets are the residential furniture such as a table and a seating. summary Building design decision-making is associated with uncertainties due to variations over time and unpredictable parameters. There is a growing demand for probabilistic methods, i.e., uncertainty and sensitivity analyses to handle the uncertainties in building design. This research intends to encourage the application of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for addressing design uncertainties affecting building energy performance. The mapping between BIM (Revit and Dynamo) and a customized model-based energy analysis tool in Excel is investigated to translate architectural models to energy models and conduct the probabilistic analyses. The application of this method is demonstrated with a test case of a hypothetical residential unit in College Station, Texas, USA. Input variables in this example are the thermal properties of building elements, and the two simulation outputs are annual heating and cooling energy consumption, and deviation from comfort temperature. The results indicate the probability distribution of simulation outputs and the importance factor of each design input. This method deals with uncertainties and provides a more reliable and robust basis for design decision-making.

summary The article presents the assessment method for large (horizontally spread) urban investment and its visual impact on the cityscape using digital analyses. The visual impact assessment is often used in relation to facilities which dominate in the cityscape, mainly tall buildings. Various studies, however, examine the impact of wide but relatively low-rising buildings and their impact on the cityscape. The article presents a methodology for the assessment of the visual impact and a case study for a building facility comprising several tightly developed and medium height blocks of buildings in a city center of a significant historical value in Gdańsk, Poland. The research has been based on the Visual Impact Size method (VIS) and a city model consisting of a regular cloud of points (Digital Surface Model). The simulation has been developed using a dedicated C++ software (developed by author). The study aimed at assessing the following: a) to what degree such an urban investment can influence the cityscape; b) how the impact can be analyzed using digital techniques, and c) what input parameters of the analysis are crucial for satisfactory accuracy of its results.

summary The blockchain is a distributed ledger managed by a peer to peer network that stores all transaction records. The distributed ledger technology offers new possibilities, promising to ensure that data is secure, decentralized and incomparable. In the Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) industry, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has quickly become a standard platform where all parties work together on a single and shared model for collaboration. The issues of Supply Chain Management (SCM) within BIM can be identified in BIM maturity level, based on PAS1193 that developed through Common Data Environment (CDE). The research strategy is to make model and simulation of SCM using BIM and create CDE to become decentralized and integrate the blockchain technology. The smart contract system validates every material and configuration of components within the model from the design stage until the operation stage. Traceability and auditability through an immutable historic eventually be more visible and allow real-time tracking of a material to a construction site providing a history from the origin.

summary In Brazil, the evaluation processes of building architectural designs of Airports Passenger Terminal (PT) are carried out manually. It depends on the architects' knowledge, leading to possible errors. On the other hand, the rule checking in BIM-modeled building projects opens up new horizons for this type of activity. Based on Code Checking concepts, this paper presents a method for automating rule checking for building code in building architectural design of PT. Following the aspects of Design Science Research, it is developed in two stages: Construction (theoretical foundation, creating rule checking for the PT, implementation of the rules in BIM softwares for code checking and validation) and Evaluation of artefact. This paper shows a series of problems resulting from the evaluation of PT using traditional methods. It can be concluded that the use of rules for regulatory code checking with BIM allows standardization in the evaluation of architectural design of PT.

summary With the increasing applications of computational methods in the field of design optimization, intelligent metaheuristic algorithms are playing a more important role in building performance optimization. To enable the integration of optimization algorithms with Building Information Modeling (BIM), this research implemented the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm on Revit + Dynamo, which is a parametric BIM platform. A MultiObjective PSO (MOPSO) Solver has been developed in Dynamo using MATLAB and C# programming languages. The methodology of the research and the validation studies are presented in the paper. The validation studies prove the effectiveness of the MOPSO Solver for both standard optimization test functions and an optimization example of a simplified building design.

summary The research of developing and improving pedestrian simulation model is essential in the process of analysing, evaluating and generating the architectural spaces that can not only satisfy circulation design condition but also promote sales by attracting customers. In terms of programming the simulation for commercial environment, current study attempts to use shortest-path algorithm generally and these results suggested that the model can reproduce approximate real trajectory within given environment. However, these studies also mentioned about necessity of considering shopper internal state and visual field. In this paper, in order to further incorporate the dynamic internal state (memory) into simulation model, we propose using iterative algorithm based on recurrent neural network (RNN) framework which allow it to exhibit temporal dynamic behaviour for a time sequence. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of these algorithms we introduce and assess the combination of multiple algorithms and calibration of probability by comparing with trajectories of the experiment.

summary 3D CAD modeling using natural interaction techniques necessitates greater research into the modeling procedures employed by users. In a previously conducted experiment, we elicited speech and gestures input for 3D CAD modeling tasks for conceptual design. In this paper, we examine the 3D modeling procedures articulated by the participants, using gestures and speech, for creating basic 3D models of increasing complexity. We identified 3D modeling procedures and characterized them as CAD legacy and non-legacy procedures. Results show that (1) non-legacy procedures were employed by a considerable number of participants who had fair and high proficiency in CAD and (2) Non-legacy procedures with fewer steps were rated favorably by participants. Based on the results, we provide recommendations on key aspects of non-legacy procedures that need to be incorporated in CAD modeling programs to facilitate speech and gestural input.

summary This paper proposes a method for an automated live sensor data visualization of building indoor environment conditions using a VR system. The proposed method is based on the integration of environmental sensors, BIM, and VR technology. Such integration provides an opportunity to utilize an immersive and live sensing technology for improving data visualization. In our case study, the environmental data, such as indoor air temperature, humidity, and light level are captured by sensors connected to Arduino microcontrollers. The data output of sensors obtained from Arduino units are stored onto the BIM model and transferred to the developed VR system. The developed system simultaneously visualizes numerical values of sensors' reading together with the virtual model of the building in a VR headset. The result of the case study showed that the developed system is capable of visualizing various indoor environmental information of the building with the VR technology. It can provide users with useful information to help monitoring indoor thermal comfort conditions of the building in real-time, while performing the walkthrough in the virtual environment.

summary This paper presents a project-based research study using the beta version of Oriole-a custom-made animation-based plug-in for grasshopper 3D visual programming environment, to develop robotic motion/controlling solutions. Oriole, as a parametric tool, makes it possible for designers/users to "design"-instead of generating, the motions of the robot based on the notion of keyframing and time-based animation. Through the use of Oriole, users can simulate-and ultimately develop robotic motions/performances in more intuitive ways. This unique feature enables users with minor or no programming background to create robotic solutions using Oriole as a software/plugin Bridge.Using Rhinoceros 3D as a digital modeling platform in conjunction with Grasshopper 3D and its robotic simulation platforms, Oriole can develop controlling strategies for different industrial robots such as KUKA, ABB, and Universal Robots. Oriole enables designers to create a precise interaction between the robot, its spatial "performance" and the physical environment, through animation and keyframing to "design" robotic interactions and movements as frames of animation instead of segments of a curve "path."

summary This paper describes the Urban Structure Synthesizer (USS), a research prototype based on deep learning that generates diagrams of morphologically consistent urban fabrics from context-rich urban datasets. This work is part of a larger research on computational analysis of the relationship between urban context and morphology. USS relies on a data collection method that extracts GIS data and converts it to diagrams with context information (Rhee et al., 2019). The resulting dataset with context-rich diagrams is used to train a Wasserstein GAN (WGAN) model, which learns how to synthesize novel urban fabric diagrams with the morphological and contextual qualities present in the dataset. The model is also trained with a random vector in the input, which is later used to enable parametric control and variation for the urban fabric diagram. Finally, the resulting diagrams are translated to 3D geometric entities using computer vision techniques and geometric modeling. The diagrams generated by USS suggest that a learning-based method can be an alternative to methods that rely on experts to build rule sets or parametric models to grasp the morphological qualities of the urban fabric.

summary Consolidated urban areas usually present a challenge for the sustainable design decisions for the architect. The site, orientation and surrounding built environment compromise both passive and active systems, shortening the possible optimization measures available, leaving the designer with doubts as far as efficiency is concerned.BIM methodologies and visual programming languages have opened up a very wide range of design and analysis tools allowing the architect to make informed decisions based on data extracted from the models. Nonetheless it's optimization is through a slow process of trial and error, creating a significant limitation. This paper discusses the potentialities of the use of evolutionary algorithms to generate optimized solutions for facade solar orientation. A comparison between three different evolutionary algorithms aiming for solar radiation, inside average temperature allows to conclude the best result versus time consumed. Although under similar results the multi-objective EA represents the best compromise between time and final objective on the case study chosen for the paper. The interconnectivity in real time of BIM and algorithmic modeling softwares represents an advantage for time saving sustainable design decisions.

summary The workflow for integration of parametric modeling with BIM is using generative-programming described and tested in this research. The workflow aims to take advantage of these two distinctive design paradigms. This paper describes a design experiment that called for a NURBS roof generated by sweeping profiles along a curved path. Computer applications in the field of architecture are often based on a diverse range of design paradigms. We assumed the use of multiple applications, using various file formats, are facts and are unlikely to disappear. Given that interoperability issues will certainly arise, in this article, we propose and test a design workflow using parametric modeling, generative programming, and building information modeling. Our objective is to test the efficiency and improve upon the compatibility between Parametric-Algorithmic-Design and BIM applications. Our major contribution was defining a workflow for designing NURBS surfaces and corresponding supporting structures enhancing interoperability among different applications through generative-programming.

summary This paper presents our concept, named Interactive Assemblies, which facilitates interaction between man and machine in construction process in which specially designed building components are used as a design interface. In our setup, users physically manipulate and reposition building components. The components, digitized by means of machine sensing, become a part of the design interface. Each of the three experiments included in this paper examines a different robotic sensor approach that helps transfer of data, including the position and shape of each component, back into the digital model. We investigate combinations of material systems (material computation, selfcorrecting assembly) and matching sensors. The accumulated data serves as input for design algorithms and generates robot tool paths for collaborative fabrication. Using real-world geometry to move from virtual design tools directly to physical interaction and back, our research proposes enhanced participation of human actors in robotic construction processes in architecture.

summary The early stages of building design are characterized by a continuous endeavor for the development of variants and their evaluation and consistent detailing. The concept of adaptive detailing aims to enable the architect to evaluate and compare design variants which are partially incomplete and vague (Zahedi and Petzold 2018b). This paper discusses a minimized communication protocol based on BIM, which enables computer-readable interactions between the architect and different domain-experts (representing various analysis and simulation procedures) (Zahedi and Petzold 2018a). This comprises the selection of simulation procedures as well as any necessary consolidation of the information content according to the requirements of the simulations. Any additions required on the part of the simulation procedures are visually prepared globally or space-and component-oriented respectively, in order to perform detailing of a building model in a targeted way. Moreover, this paper proposes various supportive methods for visual representation and exploration of analysis results.

summary In this paper we show how very high-volumes of raw WiFi-based location data of individuals can be used to identify dense activity locations within a neighbourhood. Key to our methods is the inference of the size of the area directly from the data, without having to use additional geographical information. To extract the density information, data-mining and machine learning techniques form activity-based transportation modelling are applied. These techniques are demonstrated on data from a large-scale experiment conducted in Singapore in which tens of thousands of school children carried a multi-sensor device for five consecutive days. By applying the techniques we were able to identify expected high-density areas of school pupils, specifically their school locations, using only the raw data, demonstrating the general applicability of the methods.

summary The design inspired by nature is an ongoing issue from the past to the present. There are many design examples inspired from nature. Fractal geometry formation, which is focused on this study, is a system seen in nature. A model based on fractal growth principle was proposed for tile design. In this proposal made with using Visual Programming Language, a tiling design experiment placed in a hexagonal grid system was carried out. Thus, a base was created for tile designs to be made using the fractal principle. The results of the case study were evaluated and potential future studies were discussed.

summary Smartphones have become an ordinary accompanier of our walks and created new modes of appropriation of public space. This study aims to research these modes by observing the altering visual attention and walking behavior of people using smartphones in public space, and in this way, to reveal the emergence of different types of post-flâneurs. In order to address these aims, 346 (195 females, 151 males) smartphone users were observed in a central public square in Ghent, Belgium for seven days in 10-minute time intervals. Each person's gender, age, number of accompanies and their dominant mode of smartphone usage(s) were identified. Afterward, each person's walking timeline was organized into seconds and coded according to their focus of visual attention in 24 different modes which grouped under the three gaze types; visual attention on the environment, on the environment through the smartphone screen, and on the smartphone screen. Results of the descriptive statistics, multivariate graph, and rhythm-based in-depth analysis show that different types of smartphone activities affect visual attention and speed differently. Different types of post-flâneurs such as navigators and photo takers were identified based upon their high percentage of visual attention on the environment and slower walking speed. The study also revealed the frequent presence of phone-walkers (who walk while only holding the smartphone) and smartphone zombies (who walk slowly and without attention to their surrounding) in public space. In addition to these, our research revealed rapid smartphone zombies who walk faster than the average walking speed, a finding contrary to the former studies reviewed.
