summary The blockchain is a distributed ledger managed by a peer to peer network that stores all transaction records. The distributed ledger technology offers new possibilities, promising to ensure that data is secure, decentralized and incomparable. In the Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) industry, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has quickly become a standard platform where all parties work together on a single and shared model for collaboration. The issues of Supply Chain Management (SCM) within BIM can be identified in BIM maturity level, based on PAS1193 that developed through Common Data Environment (CDE). The research strategy is to make model and simulation of SCM using BIM and create CDE to become decentralized and integrate the blockchain technology. The smart contract system validates every material and configuration of components within the model from the design stage until the operation stage. Traceability and auditability through an immutable historic eventually be more visible and allow real-time tracking of a material to a construction site providing a history from the origin.

summary Mexico is one of the most urbanized countries in the Global South, and simultaneously faces a rapidly increasing population and a deluge of inadequate housing (URBANET 2019). In 2016, it was estimated that 40 percent of all private residences in Mexico were considered inadequate by UN-Habitat (UN-Habitat 2018). As informal housing constitutes over half of all Mexican housing construction, the most vulnerable groups of the population are particularly impacted. Therefore, there is a serious need to innovate in the area of low-cost building construction for housing in Mexico. This research explores how shape-optimized concrete and earth construction could help provide adequate housing without jeopardizing the country’s commitment to sustainability.

summary Sound Space, an interactive virtual reality tool, allows architects and designers to simulate and visualize the acoustic implications of their building designs. By providing designers with the ability to pause, rewind and fast forward a sound wave within a virtual built environment, we empower them to let acoustics influence their design decisions. With a focus on simulation accuracy as well as user experience, we let the user interact with, explore, and curate their own experience while gaining an intuitive understanding of the acoustic implications of their design. Sound Space explores the opportunities that a linked BIM connection may bring within game engine based experiences, and looks at some of the tools we used to try to make that connection. Sound Space focuses on evaluating the acoustic performance of a space in an interactive and visual experience. For buildings such as symphony halls or theaters, acoustic engineers are a part of the design process from the beginning, but the majority of projects such as schools, hospitals, or museums might employ acoustic specialists only near the end, if at all. At this point it is often too late to make meaningful changes to account for the important acoustic characteristics that can make such spaces work better for students, patients, and visitors. Our goal was to create an environment that was visually interesting enough to immerse and retain users in the experience, and accurate enough to give useful results to the users for them to make informed choices about their design decisions.

summary This research presents the development of a construction system for a solid expanded cork building envelope. The inspiration for this research is the “Cork House” built in 2019 by Matthew Barnett Howland and Oliver Wilton, who developed a Cork Construction Kit for a monolithic dry-jointed cork structure. The goal of this research is to analyze and develop different varieties of construction methods for a dry-joined cork building by combining and applying traditional masonry techniques. The objective is to generate a material-based design for cork construction elements trough prototyping and using a selection of digital tools such as 3D modeling and 3D printing. Expanded cork is a 100% plant-based material which, if applied correctly, has the capacity to be used as a load bearing, insulating and protective structure all at once. It has almost no environmental impact and is completely compostable. To maintain the material's compostable property, this construction system has to be developed without any kind of binders or mortar. Additionally, this more reduced and simplified form of construction will not only make it possible to build without any specific expertise, but at the same time ensure resources to be reused or composted at the end of building life.

summary This paper is a take on contemporary works in wood designed with parametric softwares and seen from an academic and professional point of view. The knowledge about digital wood developed through Digital Fabrication Laboratories has proved to be effective but with certain limitations when used for real constructions. In fact, translating the freedom of building temporary architectures -which is usually one of the "learn by doing" activities of design studio or workshops- into wood architecture that respect all the constraints of real construction is a challenge. This paper shows several experiences where innovative ideas developed through research have been applied to temporary pavilions and real constructions in Japan, Italy and France.

summary The stilt houses on Chiloé Island, Chile, traditionally built in local timber, are currently in poor conditions and lack of maintenance that contributes on a very poor thermal performance.To carry out interventions and inform decision making to intervene on such unique pieces of cultural heritage in fragile conditions, a computerized dynamic thermal simulation tool (software DesignBuilder®) is used to understand and assess the energy performance of these typology of houses, identifying their annual energy losses, and determining their current annual heating demand of ten case studies.The current annual heating demand of the stilt houses is high, due to the thermal transmittance values of the building envelopes. They exceed in five times the value recommended by Chilean Building Code for the climatic zone under study. Especially critical are heat losses through the ventilated floor (external floor under DesignBuilder® template) and air infiltration, which on average contributed to 30.5% and 28.85% of all energy loss, respectively. According to simulations for ventilated floor, walls, and roofs, the obtained performance could be improved to 65% with thermal reconditioning and measures to enhance airtightness, although the feasibility of such interventions without damaging the heritage houses needs to be carefully considered.

summary This paper reports on ongoing research investigating applications and methodologies for algorithms and artificial intelligence within urban design. Although the research recognises not all design is numerically quantifiable, it posits that certain aspects are. It provides evidence of algorithmically derived solutions-in many cases-being as good as those developed by a design professional. I situate the research within a series of examples of design quantification and description. Before discussing practical implementations of algorithmic spatial planning by the co-work start-up WeWork. These projects demonstrate an ongoing narrative to establish spatial syntactical rules for building and urban design. Finally, the paper reports on original research that aims to apply algorithmic space planning to urban design. A work-in-progress, at this stage the finding report on our methodology, preliminary implementation of an algorithmic strategy. It finally presents emerging data pointing to what might happen if the sector does not embrace algorithms and AI.

summary Optimization of Natural Ventilation process in highrise buildings is one of the most complex and least addressed phenomenon in the field of sustainable architecture. This issue requires urgent consideration to reduce the computation time due to fast growing demand of vertical construction in metropolitan cities. Until recently most highrise buildings have been operated with mechanical systems, causing high energy loads in hot climates and have high carbon footprints. Highrise buildings with natural ventilation and sky gardens can address these problems. This study involves the development of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) addressing the multi objective optimization of natural ventilation in tall buildings incorporated with Sky-Gardens at different levels all connected through a central ventilation shaft. The fitness function for this GA is composed of three scales; temperature reduction due to evapotranspiration of plants of sky-gardens, optimum wind velocity for channelizing air inside the corridors and ventilation shaft, and optimum building configuration. The aim is to find the best solutions for tall buildings constructed in hot climate through the provision of optimized airflow paths suitable for the effectiveness of natural ventilation, within a reasonably short computation time for supporting design processes at early stage.

summary Refurbishments and adaptations to existing building structures can be a challenging problem: Keeping track of all building measures (e.g. what walls, doors and installations to add or remove) is equally demanding as trying to keep an eye on the constraints (e.g. natural lighting) and functions that the changed structure will provide. It also demands a integrated view of the redesign (spatial aspect) and the refurbishment as a project (time aspect). To this end, we have been developing our planning tool "Refurb!", which lets a user plan refurbishments and adaptations to existing structures using a mixed metaphor of "CAD-tool + project plan", including a variety of analysis tools to compare the original state of a structure to the planned one (e.g. adjacency and circulation before and after adaptation). The tool is aimed at project planners and ranges from small scenarios (e.g. relocation/adaptation/refurbishment of a department) to big scenarios (e.g. relocation when bringing a hospital into service).

title Computational modeling for climate change: Simulating and visualizing a resilient landscape architecture design approach

summary Coastlines are changing, wildfires are raging, cities are getting hotter, and spatial designers are charged with the task of designing to mitigate these unknowns. This research examines computational digital workflows to understand and alleviate the impacts of climate change on urban landscapes. The methodology includes two separate simulation and visualization workflows. The first workflow uses an animated particle fluid simulator in combination with geographic information systems data, Photoshop software, and three-dimensional modeling and animation software to simulate erosion and sedimentation patterns, coastal inundation, and sea level rise. The second workflow integrates building information modeling data, computational fluid dynamics simulators, and parameters from EnergyPlus and Landsat to produce typologies and strategies for mitigating urban heat island effects. The effectiveness of these workflows is demonstrated by inserting design prototypes into modeled environments to visualize their success or failure. The result of these efforts is a suite of workflows which have the potential to vastly improve the efficacy with which architects and landscape architects use existing data to address the urgency of climate change.

summary Cyber-physical systems increasingly inform and alter the perception of atmospheric conditions within interior environments. The Catoptric Surface research project uses computation and robotics to precisely control the location of reflected daylight through a building envelope to form an image-based pattern of light on the building interior's surfaces. In an attempt to amplify or reduce spatial perception, the daylighting reflected onto architectural surfaces within a built environment generates atmospheric effects. The modification of light patterns mapped onto existing or new surfaces enables the perception of space to not rely on form alone. The mapping of a new pattern that is independent of architectural surfaces creates a visual effect of a formless atmosphere and holds the potential to affect the way people interact with the space. People need different amounts and quality of daylight depending on physiological differences due to age or the types of tasks they perform. This research argues for an informed luminous and atmospheric environment that is relative both to the user and more conceptual architectural aspirations of spatial perception controlled by a cyber-physical robotic façade system.

summary As a contextual and passive design strategy, solar envelopes play a great role in determining building mass based on desirable sun access during the predefined period. With the rapid evolution of digital tools, the design method of solar envelopes varies in different computational platforms. However, current approaches still lack in covering the detailed complex geometry and relevant information of the surrounding context. This, consequently, affects missing information during contextual analysis and simulation of solar envelopes. This study proposes a subtractive method of solar envelopes by considering the geometrical attribute contained in the point cloud of TLS (terrestrial laser scanner) dataset. Integration of point cloud into the workflow of solar envelopes not only increases the robustness of final geometry of existing solar envelopes but also enhances awareness of architects during contextual analysis due to consideration of surface properties of the existing environment.

summary Platforms that integrate developments from multiple disciplines are becoming increasingly relevant as the complexity of different technologies increases day by day. In this context, this paper describes an integrative approach for the development of architectural projects. It portrays the benefits of applying such an approach by describing its implementation throughout the development and execution of a building demonstrator. Through increasing the agility and extending the scope of existing computational tools, multiple collaborators were empowered to generate innovative solutions across the different phases of the project´s cycle. For this purpose, novel solutions for planar segmented wood shells are showcased at different levels. First, it is demonstrated how the application of a sophisticated hollow-cassette building system allowed the optimization of material use, production time, and mounting logistics due to the modulation of the parameters of each construction element. Second, the paper discusses how the articulation of that complexity was crucial when negotiating between multiple professions, interacting with different contractors, and complying with corresponding norms. Finally, the innovative architectural features of the resulting building are described, and the accomplishments are benchmarked through comparison with typological predecessor.

summary The context of digital fabrication allows architects to reinvestigate material, process and the design decisions they entail to explore novel expression in architecture. This demands a new approach to design thinking, as well as the relevant tools to couple the form of artefacts with the process in which they are made. This paper presents a customised computational design tool developed for exploring the novel design space of Concrete Extrusion 3D Printing (CE3DP), enabling a reinterpretation of the concrete column building typology. This tool allows the designer to access generative engines such as trigonometric functions and mesh subdivision through an intuitive graphical user interface. Balancing process efficiency as understood by our industry with a strong design focus, we aim to articulate the unique architectural qualities inherent to CE3DP, energising much needed innovation in concrete technology.

summary The gradual rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and its increasing visibility among many research disciplines affected Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD). Architectural deep learning (DL) approaches are being developed and published on a regular basis, such as retrieval (Sharma et al. 2017) or design style manipulation (Newton 2019; Silvestre et al. 2016). However, there seems to be no method to evaluate highly constrained spatial configurations for specific architectural domains (such as housing or office buildings) based on basic architectural principles and everyday practices. This paper introduces an automatic constraint-based consistency checker to evaluate the coherency of semantic spatial configurations of housing construction using a small set of design principles to evaluate our DL approaches. The consistency checker informs about the overall performance of a spatial configuration followed by whether it is open/closed and the constraints it didn't satisfy. This paper deals with the relation of spaces processed as mathematically formalized graphs contrary to existing model checking software like Solibri.

summary Architectural surfaces constantly emit radiant heat fluxes to their surroundings, a phenomenon that is wholly dependent on their geometry and material properties. Therefore, the capacity of 3D scanning techniques to capture the geometry of building surfaces should be extended to sense and capture the surfaces’ thermal behavior in real time. We present an innovative sensor, SMART (Spherical-Motion Average Radiant Temperature Sensor), which captures the thermal characteristics of the built environment by coupling laser geometry scanning with infrared surface temperature detection. Its novelty lies in the combination of the two sensor technologies into an analytical device for radiant temperature mapping. With a sensor-based dynamic thermal-surface model, it is possible to achieve representation and control over one of the major factors affecting human comfort. The results for a case-study of a 3D thermal scan conducted in the recently completed Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University are compared with simulation results based on a detailed BIM model of the same space.

summary This paper discusses the methodology and results of the Maslow's Palace workshops project, which engages with current debates surrounding the democratisation of digital urban design technology and stakeholder decision making, through the implementation of a speculative oriented approach to serious gaming. The research explores how serious games might be used to help marginalised communities consider past, future and present community experiences, reconcile dissimilar assumptions, generate social capital building and design responses and prime participants for further long term design engagement processes. Empirical material for this research was gathered from a range of case study workshops prepared with three landfill-based communities and external partners throughout 2017. Results show the approach helped participants develop shared norms, values and understandings of sensitive topics and develop ideas for future action through "collective tinkering".
