Society of robots will make decisions about which users to serve, depending on the users' requests through the UdaMas app.

summary The better integration of the knowledge and expertise from different disciplines into urban design and the creation of more interdisciplinary and collaborative work processes to accommodate this have been under discussion in related research for decades. Nevertheless, many barriers preventing a seamless collaborative work flow still persist. In this paper we present an experiment taking place under real-world conditions, which outlines an alternative way for more efficient collaboration by focusing on the design process rather than the result and thus providing additional insights for all parties involved. A parametric design approach was chosen to help mediate between the areas of expertise involved supporting the smooth transition of data, the mutual translation of design feedback and better informed design decisions as an outcome. The case study presented in this paper exemplifies the application of the approach in a design project on masterplan scale integrating inputs from urban design, economics and mobility experts; and shows the opportunity for transforming the formerly segregated design process into a platform for transparent negotiations.

summary Despite, the innovation of additive manufacturing (AM) technology, and in spite of the existence of natural bio-materials offering notable mechanical properties, materials used for AM are not necessarily more sustainable than materials used in traditional manufacturing. Furthermore, potential material savings may be partially overshadowed by the relative toxicity of the material and binders used for AM during fabrication and post-fabrication processes, as well as the energy usage necessary for the production and processing workflow. Soil as a building material offers a cheap, sustainable alternative to non-biodegradable material systems, and new developments in earth construction show how earthen buildings can create light, progressive, and sustainable structures. Nevertheless, existing large-scale earthen construction methods can only produce highly simplified shapes with rough detailing. This research proposes to use robotic additive manufacturing processes to overcome current limitations of constructing with earth, supporting complex three-dimensional geometries, and the creation of novel organic composites. More specifically the research focuses on robotic binder-jetting with granular bio-composites and non-toxic binding agents such as hydrogels. This paper is divided into two main sections: (1) biodegradable material system, and (2) multi-move robotic process, and describes the most crucial fabrication parameters such as compaction pressure, density of binders, deposition strategies and toolpath planning as well as identifying the architectural implications of using this novel biodegradable fabrication process. The combination of soil and hydrogel as building material shows the potential of a fully reversible construction process for architectural components and foresees its potential full-scale architectural implementations.

summary The continuous housing shortage demands efficient ways of design and construction. In the context of rising construction standards and shrinking manpower, one of the possible answers to the problem is prefabrication oriented towards do-it-yourself (DIY) construction methods, which could contribute to the low and middle income housing supply in the market. The article covers the process of developing an experimental tool for aiding single-family housing design with the use of small-element solid timber prefabrication, suitable for DIY assembly. The presented tool uses the potential of BIM technology adapting a traditionally-designed house to the needs of prefabrication and optimizing it in terms of waste generated in the assembly process. The presented experiment was realized in the Autodesk Revit environment and incorporates custom generative scripts developed in Dynamo-for-Revit. The prototype analyzed an input model and converted it into a prefabricated alternative based on the user- and technology-specified boundary conditions. The prototype was tested on the example design of a two-story single-family house. The results compare the automated optimized model conversion with manual adaptation approach. The implemented algorithm allowed for reducing the construction waste by more than 50%.

summary This paper focuses on a new form making method of spontaneous materiality under limited digital control, as a supplement to the trending method of digital materiality. A specific emphasis is placed on the connection between material selection and sensational expression in the contemporary information and digital technologies era. Spontaneous materiality refers to the alteration of material attributes by natural forces. The current techniques of digital materiality rely on accurate digital control and inhibit from the intervention of any unpredictable material variable, which shows excessive scientific calculations and a loss of artistic articulation in design. In the new form making method proposed here, intentional yet limited digital control sets the material framework where the combination of soft and hard materials takes place. With the influence of gravity and spatiotemporal accumulation of selected materials, the fusion of softness and hardness brings a coexistence of different material states and qualities in one object. Thus an integration of shape and matter produces a blurring boundary between physical material and digital form, and more importantly, a sensational experience with expectational slippages of vision and touch. Additional to the ongoing discussion of computation, this design research expands the potential of computation by restricting its influence.

summary Utilizing digital method to establish a multi-agent simulation platform and establish an interactive simulation between site elements and agents particles behavior. In this study, urban space could not have the absolute frozen state, it is always evolving and self-renewing. We hope to integrate such unstable relationships into urban design methods and programs. By constructing various type of agent particles and the interaction behaviors, we not only directly simulate the flow of people or traffic, but also simulate the public space relationship such as line of sight space, waterfront space accessibility, commercial supporting function layout, and historical and cultural block attraction from a more abstract level. From macro to micro, the result of spatial simulation has an intrinsic close causal relationship with the site's landform, building status, site function, and planning pattern, can be the basis for space generation.

summary In recent years, with the development of artificial intelligence and digital architecture, more architects begin to wonder how to generate urban planning and urban design through computational method. For the purpose of generating urban planning digitally using computational algorithms, we design a series of algorithms to develop a system that evaluates initial features of the site such as the strength of sunlight, water, landscape. These parameters related to the function zoning of the town were determined based on the data extracted from case studies. These data were integrated into a Markov chain mathematical model for the sake of analyzing the function of grid points. Finally, an algorithm of a multi-agent system was used to optimize the function that could evaluate the grade of each raster point of the town, which could be used to decide the function of a specific region.

summary This paper proposes a framework of judgment system for smart home assistant that utilizes Collective Intelligence Case Based Reasoning (CI-CBR). CBR is suitable for the smart home environment with its system adaptability to the changeful user scenarios. However, existing CBR solutions have shown relatively low accuracy in service recommendation. This research therefore aims at enhancing the accuracy by introducing collective intelligence into the recommendation system. Assuming that multiple agents will make better decision than single agent, we adopted a multi-agent approach to generate the most similar case, which represents the optimal recommendation from the case base. This paper describes how our system enables agents adopting different similarity measures come to an agreement about the most similar case by the means of majority voting in the judging process. Our framework of a collective judgment system demonstrates its potentials to improve recommendation accuracy, and further enhance the performance of existing smart home assistants.

summary This study presents an approach for the intelligent generation of architectural layout, in which partial space inherits Chinese garden spatial features. The approach combines spatial prototype analysis and evolutionary optimization process. On one hand, from the perspective of shape grammar, this paper both analyzes and abstracts the spatial prototype that describes the spatial characteristics of Chinese gardens, including the organization system of architecture and landscape, with the spatial sequences along the tourism orientation. On the other hand, taking the design task of Lotus teahouse as an example, a typical spatial prototype is selected to develop the generative intelligent experiment to achieve the architectural layout, in which the spatial prototype is inherited. Through rule-making and parameter adjustment, the spatial prototype will eventually be transformed into a computational model based on the multi-agent system. Hence, the experiment of intelligent generation of architectural layout is carried out under the influence of the function, form and environmental factors; and a three-dimensional conceptual model that inherits the Chinese garden spatial prototype is obtained ultimately.

title Active membranes: 3D printing of elastic fibre patterns on pre-stretched textiles

summary There has been a steady growth, over several decades, in the deployment of fabrics in architectural applications; both in terms of quantity and variety of application. More recently, three-dimensional printing and additive manufacturing have added to the palette of technologies that designers in architecture and related disciplines can call upon. Here, we report on research that brings those two technologies together – the development of active membrane elements and structures. We show how these active membranes have been achieved by laminating three-dimensional printed elasto-plastic fibres onto pre-stretched textile membranes. We report on a set of experimentations involving one-, two- and multi-directional geometric arrangements that take TPU 95 and polypropylene filaments and apply them to Lycra textile sheets, to form active composite panels. The process involves a parameterised design, actualised through a fabrication process including stress-line simulation, fibre pattern three-dimensional printing and the lamination of embossed patterns onto a pre-stretched membrane; followed by the release of tension afterwards in order to allow controlled, self-generation of the final geometry. Our findings document the investigation into mapping between the initial two-dimensional geometries and their resulting three-dimensional doubly curved forms. We also reflect on the products of the resulting, partly serendipitous, design process.

summary The aim of this ongoing doctoral research is to rely on the incommensurable potential held in Japanese Katagami patterns in order to translate them into three-dimensional speculative architectures and architectural components that afford architects other design approaches differentiated from systemic and typical space configurations. While many designers are diving in the generative and computational design world by developing new personal methods, we would like to recycle the existing production of Katagami patterns into three-dimensional architectural elements that will perpetuate work of Katagami artists beyond time, borders, and scope of applicability. Given that the current digital shift has given us more computation power, we are broadening Katagami with new fabrication strategies and new methods to explore, produce, and stock geometry and data. In this paper, we rely on the Processing library IGeo (developed by Satoru Sugihara) to build bottom-up agent-based algorithms to study the architectural potential of Katagami patterns as a top-down clean and simple initial topology that avoids imitation of standard templates applied during the process of configuring and planning architectural space.

summary Although parametric modelling and digital design tools have become ubiquitous in digital design, there is a limited understanding of how designers apply them in their design processes (Yu et al., 2014). This paper looks at the use of GHShot versioning tool developed by the authors (Cristie & Joyce, 2018; 2019) used to capture and track changes and progression of parametric models to understand early-stage design exploration and collaboration empirically. We introduce both development history graph-based metrics (macro-process) and parametric model and geometry change metric (micro-process) as frameworks to explore and understand the captured progression data. These metrics, applied to data collected from three cohorts of classroom collaborative design exercises, exhibited students' distinct modification patterns such as major and complex creation processes or minor parameter explorations. Finally, with the metrics' applicability as an objective language to describe the (collaborative) design process, we recommend using versioning for more data-driven insight into parametric design exploration processes.

summary Typical adaptive facades rely on mechanical actuators that respond to the outdoor climate and regulate its effect on indoor spaces. With the emergence of ubiquitous computing, several studies have independently utilized the latent properties of programmable materials, such as the hygroscopic properties of wood and the difference in expansion coefficient of metals, to passively program material response. Motion stimuli vary for each material however, involving changes in humidity and temperature fluctuation for wood and metals respectively. This paper introduces Hygromorphic-Thermobimetal (HMTM), as a low-tech low-cost passive programmable composite. A series of physical experiments are conducted to deduce design parameters that induce specific actuation mechanisms based on the stimulation of both hygroscopic properties in wood and metal expansion through temperature variation. This allows for an extended implementation of the hygroscopic properties of wood and its actuation configurations in hot arid climates, where variation in temperature, rather than humidity, is more dominant.

summary By 2050 an estimated 70 percent of the world's population will live in megacities with more than 10 million citizens (Renner 2018). This growth calls for new target-oriented, interdisciplinary methods in urban planning and design in cities to meet sustainable development targets. In response, this paper exemplifies an integrated urban design process on a master plan project in Vienna. The objective is to investigate the potential towards a holistic, digital, urban design process aimed at the development of a practical methodology for future designs. The presented urban design process includes analyses and simulation tools within Rhinoceros 3D and its plug-in Grasshopper as quality-enhancing mediums that facilitate the creative approaches in the course of the project. The increase in efficiency and variety of design variants shows a promising future for the practical suitability of this approach.

summary Architects throughout time have designed tree-inspired structures, not only to decorate their creations, but also to explore biomimicry to solve mechanical and structural problems. With the predominance of digital simulation tools, these dendritic-shaped structures are now more easily explored. However, these explorations tend to lack the rationalization required to make them applicable to current production means. In this paper, we take a step back and ensure the connection between the creation and the production of the designs generated with these new digital approaches. The present investigation combines design and analysis tools in search for tree-inspired structures that take advantage of the current techniques of building construction.

summary Sustainability and economic factors are driving architectural practice towards more efficient designs. The application of optimization to the design process becomes essential to reduce the environmental footprint of buildings, as well as to reduce their costs. Building design requirements tend to be conflicting, involving the optimization of multiple goals simultaneously, which often translates to different compromises among the goals. Ideally, to make more informed and intelligent decisions, the architect should be given a set of design variations representing a heterogeneous sample of the optimal compromises one can achieve. In this paper, we discuss different approaches to find such compromises and we focus on multi-objective optimization algorithms that produce the required design variants, applying them in the context of an architectural case study.

summary The benefits of additive manufacturing technologies for the production of customized construction elements has been well documented for several decades. Multi-material additive manufacturing (MM-AM) enhances these capacities by introducing region-specific characteristics to printed objects. Several examples of the production of multi-material assemblies, including functionally-graded materials (FGMs) exist at the architectural scale, but none are known for ceramics. Factors limiting the development and application of this production method include the cost and complexity of existing MM-AM machinery, and the lack of a suitable computational workflow for the production of MM-AM ceramics, which often relies on a continuous linear toolpath. We present a method for the MM-AM of paste-based ceramics that allows for unique material expressions with relatively simple end-effector design. By borrowing methods of co-extrusion found in other industries and incorporating a 4th axis of motion into the printing process, we demonstrate a precisely controlled MM-AM deposition strategy for paste-based ceramics. We present a computational workflow for the generation of toolpaths, and describe full-body tiles and 3D artifacts that can be produced using this method. Future process refinements include the introduction of more precise control of material gradation and refinements to material composition for increased element functionality.

summary This paper explores the development of design procedures in relationship to their digital proceedings, in order to interface human movement and parametric design procedures. The research studied the use of Leap Motion controller, a gesture recognition device using infrared sensors combined with time-based generative tools in Rhinoceros Grasshopper. A physical, artistic procedure was used as a reference to model a digital design procedure, including a series of parametric definitions combined with them in an attempt to produce complex three-dimensional designs in real time. In a later stage of this research, a modular, open source, digitizing arm was developed to capture hand movement and interact with an autonomous parametric definition, augmenting even more the range of applications of dexterity-based digital design. The challenge of this experimental investigation lies in the negotiation of the designer's needs for a complex yet open design process and the possibilities of defined soft- and hardware solutions.

summary The Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect is pronounced in dense urban developments, and particular an issue in the case study city of Parramatta, where temperature increases are impacting use of public space, health, and economic productivity. To mitigate against elevated temperatures in built up areas, this research explores the optimisation of paving material layouts through using an evolutionary algorithm. High albedo (reflective) materials are objectively cooler than low albedo (absorbent) materials yet tend to be more expensive. To reduce the amount of heat absorbent pavement materials whilst keeping in mind material costs, a range of materials of different albedo levels (reflectivity) can be assigned on the same path using an evolutionary algorithm to optimise the coolest materials for the cheapest price. Over the course of this paper, this research aim will be approached using visual scripting software such as Grasshopper to simulate daylight analysis and to generate an optimisation algorithm. Previous research on the topics of UHI have revealed different methods for solving specific problems, all focusing on using software analysis to determine an informed decision on construction. The paper contributes via a computational approach of material selection to battle urban heat island effects.

summary With the rapid increase in the accessible data, available information surpasses one's ability to extract knowledge from, which puts a great emphasis on the skills of the individual to reach and use relevant information, adapt to changing conditions and sustain respective skills. ICT skills, critical thinking skills, and communication/collaboration skills emerge as the survival skills and key factors for individuals to cope with the demands of the 21st-century. It is known that educational institutions have struggles in changing the curricula/teaching system in coping with the requirements of the rapidly evolving industry. Thus, workshops gained more importance in different levels which are a part of curricular or extracurricular activities to re-furnish existing skills or gain new skills. In the scope of this study, the learning and teaching approaches based on STEAM approach are assessed through a three-day workshop aiming to illustrate how these survival skills can be conveyed and embedded into the architecture education. The workshop is designed to be inclusive for all architecture students regardless of their level of education or background knowledge/skills. Within the scope of this paper, the conduction strategies of the workshop are covered in detail to highlight the importance of these survival skills along with the modes of teaching and share the best practices and gained knowledge for future works.
