Arch. María Elena Tosello. The work, which was developed in the framework of a grant directed by MSc. Arch. Griselda Bertoni, proposes to reflect on certain limitations that may affect the experience of public space, and how, through the integration of artifacts, interfaces and augmented public spaces, a better appropriation, mobility and habitability of cities can be promoted for seniors. summary The intent of this research is to study potential improvements and optimizations in the context of robotic fabrication paired with Augmented Reality (AR), leveraging the technology in the fabrication of the individual part, as well as guiding the larger assembly process. AR applications within the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry have seen constant research and development as designers, fabricators, and contractors seek methods to reduce errors, minimize waste, and optimize efficiency to lower costs (Chi, Kang, and Wang 2013). Recent advancements have made the technology very accessible and feasible for use in the field, as demonstrated by seminal projects such as the Steampunk Pavilion in Tallinn, Estonia (Jahn, Newnham, and Berg 2022). These types of projects typically improve manual craft processes. They often provide projective guidelines, and make possible complex geometries that would otherwise be painstakingly slow to complete and require decades of artisanal experience (Jahn et al. 2019). Building upon a previously developed robotic tube bending workflow, our research implements a custom AR interface to streamline the bending process for multiple, large, complex parts with many bends, providing a pre-visualization of the expected fabrication process for safety and part-verification purposes. We demonstrate the utility of this AR overlay in the part fabrication setting and in an inadvertent, human-robot, collaborative process when parts push the fabrication method past its limits. The AR technology is also used to facilitate the assembly process of a spatial installation exploring a unique aesthetic with subtle bends, loops, knots, bundles, and weaves utilizing a rigid tube material.

summary Mycelium-based bio-composites can propose a renewable and biodegradable alternative for architectural construction materials. These biomaterials result from growth of mycelium, fibrous root systems of fungi, on organic substrates in controlled environmental conditions. This paper presents a material study that explores how substrate type and added supplements used for cultivating mycelium affect the compressive strength of mycelium-based composites for use as masonry units in architectural construction. For this purpose, samples grown using Pleurotus Ostreatus (Gray Oyster mushroom strain) on three different substrates (sawdust, straw and a mixture of sawdust and straw) with and without supplementation are tested for compressive strength.

summary In 2015, an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude displaced over 6.6 million people in Kathmandu, Nepal. Three years later, the country continues in its struggle to rebuild its capital. The aim of this study is to investigate a construction system, produced from locally sourced materials, that can aggregate and deploy as self-built, habitable infrastructure. The study focused on the relationship between material resonance, earthquake resistant structures, and fabrication strategies. An agent-based form-finding algorithm was developed using knowledge acquired through physical prototyping of mycelium-based composites to generate earthquake resistant geometries, optimize material usage, and enhance spatial performance. The results show compelling evidence for a construction methodology to design and construct a 3-4 story building that holds a higher degree of resistance to earthquakes. The scope of work contributes to advancements in bioengineering, confirming easy-to-grow, light-weight mycelium-composites as viable structural materials for construction.

summary With fast development of new technologies built environment transitioned from a silent background of activities performed by users to another participant of those activities. Agency of interactive architecture is based on interpretation of input data, like users’ actions, their response to the spatial agency, data from environment or other actors, and changing its performance accordingly. Architectural components, environmental conditions and people are all treated as agents and closely correspond to Actor-Network Theory (ANT). This theory generally aims to reveal the complexities of socio-technological world. ANT incorporates a principle of generalized symmetry, it means that human and nonhuman (artifacts, organization structures, etc.) actors are incorporated into the same conceptual framework and assigned equal level of agency. By analysis of the agency of Interactive Architecture through ANT the paper provides insight on social role of this new emerging type of space and its influence on other participants on socio-technological relationship.

summary This research is to develop a robotic glass crafting dip-forming process by dip forming. Instead of employing molds, we utilize repetitive dip coating and gravity to shape the glass. In addition, its morphogenesis process is similar to the certain growth mechanisms in nature, such as geotropism and branching. During the forming process, melted glass is accumulated layer by layer gradually until the target geometry is completed. The process takes advantage of the precision of the industrial robotic arm and the viscosity property of the material. This process requires the custom-made tool to operate in high temperature and controlling the timing of heating and annealing to eliminate Z artifacts caused by layered deposition, achieving the crystal-clear effect of the glass craft without the post cure process after printing. In addition, the robotic arm provides a higher degree of freedom for forming. This research demonstrates glassworks in the organic form including variations in thickness and branching to test the proposed method.

summary We present results on the development of a sustainable digital manufacturing technology, discuss the challenges associated with additive manufacturing with natural materials, how statistical modelling techniques enabled understanding the intricate relationship between material and fabrication and allowed to control material extrusion. We present a prototype created to assess the ability of the process to create large-scale artifacts. We believe steps towards advancing methods for environmentally-aware digital fabrication may pave the way in transforming the industry and society towards more sustainable production and consumption paradigms.

summary The benefits of additive manufacturing technologies for the production of customized construction elements has been well documented for several decades. Multi-material additive manufacturing (MM-AM) enhances these capacities by introducing region-specific characteristics to printed objects. Several examples of the production of multi-material assemblies, including functionally-graded materials (FGMs) exist at the architectural scale, but none are known for ceramics. Factors limiting the development and application of this production method include the cost and complexity of existing MM-AM machinery, and the lack of a suitable computational workflow for the production of MM-AM ceramics, which often relies on a continuous linear toolpath. We present a method for the MM-AM of paste-based ceramics that allows for unique material expressions with relatively simple end-effector design. By borrowing methods of co-extrusion found in other industries and incorporating a 4th axis of motion into the printing process, we demonstrate a precisely controlled MM-AM deposition strategy for paste-based ceramics. We present a computational workflow for the generation of toolpaths, and describe full-body tiles and 3D artifacts that can be produced using this method. Future process refinements include the introduction of more precise control of material gradation and refinements to material composition for increased element functionality.

summary In terms of the efficiency and informatization in the architecture and construction industry, the Fourth Industrial Revolution presents positive aspects of technological development, but we need to discuss the expanded concept, the Anthropocene. The era of the human-made environment having a powerful influence on the global system is called Anthropocene. Since the 1950s, many indicators representing human activity and earth system have shown the 'Great acceleration'. Currently, lots of urban data including building information, construction waste, and GHG emission ratio is indicating how much the urban area was contaminated with artifacts. So, the integrated planning and design approach are needed for sustainable design with data integration. This paper examines the GIS, LCA and BIM tools focusing on building information and environmental load. With the literature review, the computational system for sustainable design is demonstrated to integrate into one holistic framework for the Anthropocene. There were some limitations that data was simplified during the statistical processing, and the framework has limitations that must be demonstrated by actual data in the future. However, this could be an early approach to integrating geospatial and environmental analysis with the design framework. And it can be applied to another urban area for sustainable urban models for the Anthropocene

summary We present an experimental form-finding technique for ultra-thin glass fiber reinforced concrete components and assemblies. The objective is to challenge conventional concrete use in construction, often perceived as a massive and compressive structural material. Instead, we targeted production of fine shell assemblies principally operating in tension. To achieve thin profile components, we use a compliant molding technique where premixed GFRC is cast in polyethylene bags. Subsequently, a robotic arm system pins the bags on a substrate plate and the setup is inverted whereby gravity induces a curvature to components while concrete cures. Use of parametric modeling, computer simulation and statistical experimental methods allowed us to understand the behavior of the material process and translate computationally modeled designs into physical artifacts. We discuss the opportunity for digital fabrication methods to fuse with traditional form-finding techniques, contrast the use of computational modeling techniques and present a series of prototypes created through our process.

summary This article presents the scenario of programming use by architects and engineers, creating their own unique tools. The goal is to emulate and understand the phenomenon of BIM software customization by developing plug-ins that can explore the human-environment relationship. Demonstrates the process for building a plugin that seeks to equalize the theory of accessibility technical standards, visually impaired and architects. Uses Design Science Research methodologies to guide the construction of artifacts for specific practical problems and the Collaborative Design / Codesign to understand and know the users' expertise. It is argued that the low quality of projects that include elements for the orientation of the visually impaired in Brazil is often related to an unstructured methodology in which important aspects such as the real needs of this group and the human-environment relationship are neglected.

summary In this paper, I present the commercial, urban-scale gunshot detection system ShotSpotter in contrast with a range of ecological sensing examples which monitor animal vocalizations. Gunshot detection sensors are used to alert law enforcement that a gunshot has occurred and to collect evidence. They are intertwined with processes of criminalization, in which the individual, rather than the collective, is targeted for punishment. Ecological sensors are used as a “passive” practice of information gathering which seeks to understand the health of a given ecosystem through monitoring population demographics, and to document the collective harms of anthropogenic change (Stowell and Sueur 2020). In both examples, the ability of sensing infrastructures to “join up and speed up” (Gabrys 2019, 1) is increasing with the use of machine learning to identify patterns and objects: a new form of expertise through which the differential agendas of these systems are implemented and made visible. I trace the differential agendas of these systems as they manifest through varied components: the spatial distribution of hardware in the existing urban environment and / or landscape; the software and other informational processes that organize and translate the data; the visualization of acoustical sensing data; the commercial factors surrounding the production of material components; and the apps, platforms, and other forms of media through which information is made available to different stakeholders. I take an interpretive and qualitative approach to the analysis of these systems as cultural artifacts (Winner 1980), to demonstrate how the political and social stakes of the technology are embedded throughout them.

summary Computational design and fabrication have reached an accomplished level of ubiquity and proficiency in the field of architecture, in both academia and practice. Materiality driving structure, responsiveness, and spatial organization can be seen to evolve, in kind, with the capabilities to fabricate deeper material hierarchies. Such maturity of a procedural material-driven approach spurs a need to shift from the dictations of how to explorations of why material efficiencies, bespoke aesthetics, and performativity are critical to a particular architecture, requiring an examination of linkages between approach, techniques, and process. The material system defines a branch of architectural research utilizing bespoke computational techniques to generate performative material capacities that are inextricably linked to both internal and external forces and energies. This paper examines such a self-referential view to define an expanded ecological approach that integrates new modes of design agency and shift the material system from closed-loop relationship with site to open-ended reciprocation with human behavior. The critical need for this capacity is shown in applications of novel textile hybrid material systems—as sensorially-responsive environments for children with the neurological autism spectrum disorder—in ongoing research titled Social Sensory Architectures. Through engaging fabrication across all material scales, manners of elastic responsivity are shown, through a series of feasibility studies, to exhibit a capacity for children to become design agents in exploring the beneficial interrelationship of sensorimotor agency and social behavior. The paper intends to contribute a theoretical approach by which novel structural capacities of a material system can support a larger ecology of social and behavioral agency.

summary The context of digital fabrication allows architects to reinvestigate material, process and the design decisions they entail to explore novel expression in architecture. This demands a new approach to design thinking, as well as the relevant tools to couple the form of artefacts with the process in which they are made. This paper presents a customised computational design tool developed for exploring the novel design space of Concrete Extrusion 3D Printing (CE3DP), enabling a reinterpretation of the concrete column building typology. This tool allows the designer to access generative engines such as trigonometric functions and mesh subdivision through an intuitive graphical user interface. Balancing process efficiency as understood by our industry with a strong design focus, we aim to articulate the unique architectural qualities inherent to CE3DP, energising much needed innovation in concrete technology.

summary The Architecture of ScarCity Game is a board game used as a pedagogical tool that challenges architecture students by involving them in a series of experimental design sessions to understand the design process of scarcity and the actual relation between the craft and the digital. This means "pragmatic delivery processes and material constraints, where the exchange between the artisan of handmade, representing local skills and technology of the digitally conceived is explored" (Huang 2013). The game focuses on understanding the different variables of the crafted design process of traditional communities under conditions of scarcity (Michel and Bevan 1992). This requires first analyzing the spatial environmental model of interaction, available human and natural resources, and the dynamic relationship of these variables in a digital era. In the first stage (Pre-Agency), the game set the concept of the craft by limiting students design exploration from a minimum possible perspective developing locally available resources and techniques. The key elements of the design process of traditional knowledge communities have to be identified (Preez 1984). In other words, this stage is driven by limited resources + chance + contingency. In the second stage (Post-Agency) students taking the architects´ role within this communities, have to speculate and explore the interface between the craft (local knowledge and low technological tools), and the digital represented by computation data, new technologies available and construction. This means the introduction of strategy + opportunity + chance as part of the design process. In this sense, the game has a life beyond its mechanics. This other life challenges the participants to exploit the possibilities of breaking the actual boundaries of design. The result is a tool to challenge conventional methods of teaching and leaning controlling a prescribed design process. It confronts the rules that professionals in this field take for granted. The game simulates a 'fake' reality by exploring in different ways with surveyed information. As a result, participants do not have anything 'real' to lose. Instead, they have all the freedom to innovate and be creative.

title Generative systems in the architecture, engineering and construction industry: A systematic review and analysis

summary Researchers have been extensively exploring the employment of generative systems to support design practices in the architecture, engineering and construction industry since the 1970s. More than half a century passed since the first architecture, engineering and construction industry’s generative systems were developed; researchers have achieved remarkable leaps backed by advances in computing power and algorithms’ capacity. In this article, we present a systematic analysis of the literature published between 2009 and 2019 on the utilization of generative systems in the design practices of the architecture, engineering and construction industry. The present research studies present trends, collaborations and applications of generative systems in the architecture, engineering and construction industry in order to identify existing shortcomings and potential advancements that balance the need for theory development and practical application. It provides insightful observations that are translated into meaningful recommendations for future research necessary to progress the incorporation of generative systems into the design practices of the architecture, engineering and construction industry.

title Weaving Architectural Façades: Exploring algorithmic stripe-based design patterns

summary With the recent technological developments, particularly, the integration of computational design approaches in architecture, the traditional art techniques became increasingly important in the field. This includes weaving techniques, which have a promising application in architectural screens and façade designs. Nevertheless, the adoption of weaving as a design strategy still has many unexplored areas, particularly those related to Algorithmic Design (AD). This paper addresses the creation of weave-based façade patterns by presenting a Generative System (GS) that aids architects that intend to use AD in the design of façades inspired on traditional weaving techniques. This GS proves to reduce the time and effort spent with the programming task, while supporting the exploration of a wider solution space. Moreover, in addition to enabling the integration of user-generated weaving patterns, the GS also provides rationalization algorithms to assess the construction feasibility of the obtained solutions.

summary Prediction of user behaviour has always been problematic in architectural design. Several methods have already been developed and explored to model human behaviour in architecture. However, the majority of these methods are implemented during post-design evaluation where the insights obtained can only be implemented in a limited capacity. There is an apparent gap and opportunity, in current research and practice, to embed behaviour simulations directly into the conceptual design process. The proposed paper (research) aims to fill this gap. This paper will report on the results of a recently completed research exploring the integration process of Agent Based Modelling into the conceptual design process, using a parametric design approach. The research resulted in the development of a methodological framework for the integration of behavioural parameters into the explorative stages of the early design process. This paper also offers a categorisation and critical evaluation of existing Agent Based Modelling applications in current research and practice, which leads to the formulation of possible pathways for future implementation.

summary The study presented in this paper is part of ongoing research that is exploring how digital design tools and technologies can support waste cardboard reuse for manufacturing architectural elements in a context of scarcity. For this study, we explore the use of a parametric design tool to design and fabricate three different architectural components using waste cardboard sheets: acoustic panels and two types of formwork for concrete. This design tool maximizes the smart reuse of a waste material and aids in the fabrication process by outputting instructions for cutting, scoring, and folding. This paper also demonstrates how parametric design tools can help reuse non-standard (dimensions variable) waste materials, mediating between measurable material conditions and desired material targets for designs.
