summary The blockchain is a distributed ledger managed by a peer to peer network that stores all transaction records. The distributed ledger technology offers new possibilities, promising to ensure that data is secure, decentralized and incomparable. In the Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) industry, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has quickly become a standard platform where all parties work together on a single and shared model for collaboration. The issues of Supply Chain Management (SCM) within BIM can be identified in BIM maturity level, based on PAS1193 that developed through Common Data Environment (CDE). The research strategy is to make model and simulation of SCM using BIM and create CDE to become decentralized and integrate the blockchain technology. The smart contract system validates every material and configuration of components within the model from the design stage until the operation stage. Traceability and auditability through an immutable historic eventually be more visible and allow real-time tracking of a material to a construction site providing a history from the origin.

summary In recent years, several advances have occurred concerning the legitimacy of precarious informal settlements in Brazil. In spite of this progress in the legal dimension, little has been made concerning standards to ensure urban space quality. The difficulties of reversing this exclusionary logic are due to several complex factors. A factor less discussed, especially in the national literature, but that has begun to draw the attention of scholars, is the invisibility of the informal city. This research assumes that it is necessary to regulate the urban form of precarious informal settlements, in order to prevent the deterioration of urban environmental quality. We highlight the importance to compile data about their urban form and their built environment, in order to contribute to a reality-based regulatory policy for these settlements, and this is the primary purpose of this study. To address this question, we propose a method of measuring the settlements' urban form, based on the City Information Modeling's theorical and practical framework, which is applied to a case study in Fortaleza, Brazil.

summary In the early months of 2019, air pollution in Bangkok reached a record high, bringing national and international attention to the air quality in the South East Asian cosmopolitan. Although applications such as real-time pollution maps provide an environmental reading from the exterior, such information reveals the ‘here and now,’ where its record is inevitably lost through the ‘refreshing’ process of the live update and does not take increment and accumulation as factors to consider. The project was conceived around understanding the human body as precisely that medium that resists classification as either an interior or exterior environment that inherently performs as an impressionable record of its surroundings. Can a city’s toxicity be read through its living constituents? Can the living bodies that dwell, navigate, breathe, and process habitable environments be accessed? Can architecture retain a degree of independence while also performing as a beacon for the collective? Along this line of questioning, it was found that human hair can be transformed from a material that is effortlessly and continuously grown, cut, stylized, and discarded, and instead be intercepted and used in the production of public information gathering. Foll(i)cle is a collective being made of discarded human hair. Performing as a parliament for collectivity embedded with a protocol; the hairy pavilion invites the public in and presents them with a device at the center that hosts all the necessary equipment and information for anonymously and voluntarily providing hair samples for heavy metal analysis, the data of which is used in making a publically accessible toxi-cartography. Although humans are the primary subject for this study, the results suggest that extending the methodology to non-humans could prove useful in reading urban toxicity through various life forms.

title Towards a Genome for Zero Carbon Retrofit of UK Housing

summary The United Kingdom has some of the worst insulated housing stock in Northern Europe. This is in part due to the age of housing in the UK, with over 90% being built before 1990 [McCrone 2017, Piddington 2020]. Moreover, 85% of current UK housing will still be in use in 2050 by which stage their Government are targeting Net Carbon Zero [Eyre 2019]. Domestic energy use accounts for around 25% of UK carbon emissions. The UK will need to retrofit 20 million dwellings in order to meet this target. If this delivery were evenly spread, it would equate to over 2,000 retrofit completions each day. Government-funded initiatives are stimulating the market, with upwards of 60,000 social housing retrofits planned for 2023, but it is clear that a system must be developed to enable the design and implementation of housing-stock improvement at a large scale.This paper charts the 20-year development of a digital approach to the design for low-carbon domestic retrofit by architects Constructive Thinking Studio Limited and thence documents the emergence of a collaborative approach to retrofit patterns on a National scale. The author has led the Research and Development stream of this practice, developing a Building Information Modelling methodology and integrated Energy Modelling techniques to optimise design for housing retrofit [Georgiadou 2019, Ben 2020], and then inform a growing palette of details and a database of validated solutions [Moorhouse 2013] that can grow and be used to predict options for future projects [D’Angelo 2022]. The data is augmented by monitoring energy and environmental performance, enabling a growing body of knowledge that can be aligned with existing big data to simulate the benefits of nationwide stock improvement. The paper outlines incremental case studies and collaborative methods pivotal in developing this work The proposed outcome of the work is a Retrofit Genome that is available at a national level.

summary On May 2018 the Brazilian federal government published the Decree 9.377 setting a National Strategy for Information and Dissemination of Building Information Modelling - BIM to enable its adoption by public administration. This strategy has nine targets and among them the task of training professionals in BIM to support the demand that should be generated. A period between 2018 and 2021 has been planned to establish learning objectives and develop model disciplines, a process that, however, should not start from scratch because there are already some BIM training initiatives being performed in the country since the early 2000s. This paper has done an overview on this production highlighting some relevant conceptual contributions to this debate aiming to address challenges and possible ways to support the expected Architectural and Engineering courses restructuring.

summary Rural Vitalization being a nation-wide policy for China in the following five years, it is becoming even more important to preserve and conserve the village heritage, especially with the global background of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) involvement. This research reviews on the existing and potential methods which has been or could be used to better understand the rural built environment in the new data age, and proposes an interactive message platform named Rural Information Modelling (RIM) which could collect, storage, analyze and display the various message concerning the village heritage, especially the morphological, cognitive and behavioural information. With the help of RIM, stakeholders can better interact with the rural environment, and better negotiate with each other, leading to a more objective and rational construction process, which could express the willingness of both the outside architects, urban planners and visitors, and the in situ villagers and government.

summary With the increasing applications of computational methods in the field of design optimization, intelligent metaheuristic algorithms are playing a more important role in building performance optimization. To enable the integration of optimization algorithms with Building Information Modeling (BIM), this research implemented the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm on Revit + Dynamo, which is a parametric BIM platform. A MultiObjective PSO (MOPSO) Solver has been developed in Dynamo using MATLAB and C# programming languages. The methodology of the research and the validation studies are presented in the paper. The validation studies prove the effectiveness of the MOPSO Solver for both standard optimization test functions and an optimization example of a simplified building design.

summary This paper discusses Augmented Reality (AR) as means to interact with information regarding infrastructure projects before, under and after construction. For that purpose, two different prototypes were developed using Apples ARKit and Unity's game design platform and tested on two use cases. However, the main focus of this paper is interacting with infrastructure information through AR rather than researching core AR technology. We learned that using AR under the constructing phase with subsurface utilities is still facing several difficulties. Especially when it comes to accessing and interacting with information in a changing construction environment. These difficulties will be discussed and also the challenges regarding information flow between civil engineering and AR software.

summary The pedestrian flow of the building influences and determines the layout of the building's plan. For buildings with complex flow such as courts, airports, and stations, mixed flow line and low traffic efficiency are prone to be problems. However, the optimization of the layout of complex flow buildings usually relies on the architect's experience to judge and trials to improve. To overcome these problems, we attempt to establish a parametric model of buildings' plan (taking a typical court building as an example) with information about the different pedestrian flow and functional groups. Based on the Rhino and Grasshopper platform, we take the minimum of different pedestrian flow path length and the maximum of total spatial integration value and the minimum of total spatial entropy value as the starting point, combines pathfinding algorithm, Space Syntax and multi-objective genetic algorithm to optimize space allocation. The result shows that, compared with the original scheme, the intelligent optimised scheme can reduce the spatial waste caused by improper flow organisation, effectively improve space transportation capacity and spatial organization efficiency.

summary As digital technology advances, multiple ways of repre-senting objects interactively in space, architects and designers begin to use Virtual Reality (VR) and Immersive Digital Environ-ments (IDE) to communicate their ideas. However, these technolo-gies are bounded with their spatial limitations. In responding to this issue, our paper introduces ReShape, a digital-physical spatial representation system supported by Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarm technology that allows a user to project their unbuilt design and interact with them in real space, unattached by headset, fixed cameras or screen. ReShape can be controlled by user orien-tation and gesture as an input, where the real-time feedback is provided by UAV spatial arrangement in space, augmented by computational simulation. Spatial data is transmitted between the UAV agents for the user to experience the digital model, creating a versatile and computationally efficient platform to edit and en-hance the design in real-space. This paper outlines four systems in ReShape, i.e., (1) detection system to identify and locate the user position and orientation; (2) task-arrangement system to provide spatial information to the UAV agents; (3) UAV's communicating system to control the UAV position and task in space; and (4) Physical-Digital forming system, to project digital simulation by the UAV agents.

summary This paper presents the development and evaluation of the Geelong Digital Outdoor Museum (GDOM) prototype accessible at https://gdom.mindlab.cloud. GDOM is a portable museum‚our novel adaptation of the distributed museum model (Stuedahl & Lowe, 2013) which uses mobile devices to present museum collections attached to physical sites. Our prototype defines a way for intangible heritage associated with tangible landscapes to be accessible via personal digital devices using 360 3D scanned digital replicas of physical landscapes (photogrammetric digital models). Our work aligns with efforts set out in the UN Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) to safeguard cultural and natural heritage, by openly disseminating the heritage of physical sites seamlessly through the landscape. Using a research by design methodology we delivered our prototype as a modular web-based platform that leveraged the Matterport digital model platform. We qualitatively evaluated the prototype's usability and future development opportunities with 32 front-end users and 13 potential stakeholders. We received a wide gamut of responses that included: users feeling empowered by the greater accessibility, users finding a welcome common ground with comparable physical experiences, and users and potential stakeholders seeing the potential to re-create physical world experiences with modifications to the digital model along with on-site activation. Our potential stakeholders suggested ways in which GDOM could be integrated into the arts, education, and tourism to widen its utility and applicability. In future we see design potential in breaking out of the static presentation of the digital model and expanding our portable museum experience to work on-site as a complement to the remote experience. However, we recognise the way in which on-site activation integrate into users' typical activities can be tangential (McGookin et al., 2019) and this would necessitate further investigation into how to best integrate the experience on-site.

summary Stereoform Slab is both a pavilion and a prototype - an exhibition for the 2019 Chicago Architectural Biennial. It is an experiment in how digital form-finding and robotics can be leveraged to rethink the future of concrete construction. Stereoform Slab examines the role of one of the most ubiquitous horizontal elements in the city - the concrete slab, also the most common element in contemporary construction. Using smarter forming systems - in this case, a ruled-surface-derived, robotic hotwire process - the Stereoform Slab prototype proved that the amount of material used and waste generated could be minimized without increasing construction complexity, by about 20% over a conventional system. Stereoform also extends the conventional concrete span (column spacing), specifically in Chicago, from 30’ to 45’. In developing a concrete forming system that affords added flexibility without increasing construction costs, it is possible to reduce embodied carbon significantly. The method allows reducing carbon in buildings that aren’t typically the subject of advanced architectural design or rigorous optimization – conventional buildings that compose a majority of our built environment, and its respective contributions to global carbon emissions. Stereoform is the result of a multi-objective design optimization process. Optimal materialization, according to the compressive/tensile physics present in beam design, was balanced against the fabrication constraints of a singularly ruled-surface, which enables fast form-making using robotic hotwire cutting. SOM and Autodesk collaborated to mirror the approach developed to optimize Stereoform slab as a pavilion, to the building scale, using the multi-objective optimization platform Refinery. Project Refinery allowed the team to create a hyper-responsive system design that could adapt to any number of varying programmatic conditions and loading patterns. The development of this approach is a crucial step in making optimization techniques flexible enough to balance the number of competing parameters in the design process available and accessible to a broader design audience within architecture and engineering.

summary The construction industry faces numerous challenges related to productivity, sustainability, and meeting global demands (Hatoum and Nassereddine 2020; Carra et al. 2018; Barbosa, Woetzel, and Mischke 2017; Bock 2015; Linner 2013). In response, the automation of design and construction has emerged as a promising solution. In the past three decades, researchers and innovators in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) fields have made significant strides in automating various aspects of building construction, utilizing computational design and robotic fabrication processes (Dubor et al. 2019). However, synthesizing innovation in automation encounters several obstacles. First, there is a lack of an established venue for information sharing, making it difficult to build upon the knowledge of peers. First, the absence of a well-established platform for information sharing hinders the ability to effectively capitalize on the knowledge of peers. Consequently, much of the research remains isolated, impeding the rapid dissemination of knowledge within the field (Mahbub 2015). Second, the absence of a standardized and unified process for automating design and construction leads to the individual development of standards, workflows, and terminologies. This lack of standardization presents a significant obstacle to research and learning within the field. Lastly, insufficient training materials hinder the acquisition of skills necessary to effectively utilize automation. Traditional in-person robotics training is resource-intensive, expensive, and designed for specific platforms (Peterson et al. 2021; Thomas 2013).

summary This paper examines the process and the importance of designing and implementing intelligent, informed and bespoke information modeling solutions within the architectural design discipline. Along with the need for such tools comes the need for fluency in architectural principles, digital tool facility, and computational development skill sets (the combination are, still uncommon). This skill set combination are becoming more and more necessary for design teams to incorporate. This paper argues (through a series of case study projects produced by an internal platform) a way forward for the architectural design discipline through intelligent, informed and bespoke tool sets tailored to the needs of architectural designers.

summary In this research, we attempt to develop a tool which integrates certain common geographic information from OpenStreetMap and OpenTopography into Grasshopper. We name it as OSMKIT temporarily. Besides, in order to make the integration in the design process easier, this tool includes the bilateral conversion function of coordinate in Rhinoceros 3D and the coordinate of the World Geodetic System. These characteristics bring about several possibilities for further usage. This paper contains explanations of functions and examples. For instance, it can be employed for data visualization on a map when these data contain coordinate information. Additionally, since this tool is simple and intuitive to convert points into GPS coordinates, it can make users plan drone for photogrammetry and deal with other related tasks on the rhinoceros 3D interface, helping them to gain most current urban models. Moreover, architects or designers can be not only users but also contributors for open source map system such as OpenStreetMap; the process of sharing the mode which user measure is demonstrated in this paper. summary The AEC industry has been facing a digital transformation for improving services involved in buildings lifecycle, fostered by two disruptive technologies: Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Internet of Things (IoT). However, the literature lacks discussions regarding applications and challenges of BIM and IoT systems in the AEC. This Systematic Literature Mapping addresses this gap through search, analysis, and classification of 75 journal article abstracts published between 2015 and 2019. An increase of articles over the period is observed, predominantly with technical and processual solutions for Construction and Operation and Maintenance. The interoperability of data is a key challenge to organizations.

summary Urban design project development encompasses a wide range of disciplines and approaches, which often have separate goals, frameworks, and software tools. Lack of timely alignment of the disconnected expert inputs to the common vision leads to an increasing number of revisions and decreases chances for finding a compromise solution. We developed an intuitive browser-supported interface in order to incorporate various types of expert inputs and ways of representing the information to take a first step towards facilitating collaborative decision-making processes. The current paper describes the application of the developed tool on three exemplary case studies, where the expert and non-expert users' inputs are combined and analysed using Grasshopper scripts at the back-end. Pilot user studies conducted with professionals have shown that the tool has potential to facilitate collaboration across disciplines and compromise decisions, while most of the participants were still more likely to use it for communication with customers rather than the design team. It suggests that the interaction scheme of different actors with the tool needs to correspond better to the interaction of different actors during common negotiation processes. The findings suggest that the type of involvement of different stakeholders should be explored further in order to find the balance in functionality suitable for different parties.

summary In terms of the efficiency and informatization in the architecture and construction industry, the Fourth Industrial Revolution presents positive aspects of technological development, but we need to discuss the expanded concept, the Anthropocene. The era of the human-made environment having a powerful influence on the global system is called Anthropocene. Since the 1950s, many indicators representing human activity and earth system have shown the 'Great acceleration'. Currently, lots of urban data including building information, construction waste, and GHG emission ratio is indicating how much the urban area was contaminated with artifacts. So, the integrated planning and design approach are needed for sustainable design with data integration. This paper examines the GIS, LCA and BIM tools focusing on building information and environmental load. With the literature review, the computational system for sustainable design is demonstrated to integrate into one holistic framework for the Anthropocene. There were some limitations that data was simplified during the statistical processing, and the framework has limitations that must be demonstrated by actual data in the future. However, this could be an early approach to integrating geospatial and environmental analysis with the design framework. And it can be applied to another urban area for sustainable urban models for the Anthropocene

summary In an increasingly connected world where computers are everywhere, surrounding us in embedded small portable devices, appliances and inside buildings, implementing these interconnected and embedded computers have now become common practice in the design of smart spaces and intelligent environments of today. Digital information is constantly being collected and distributed by a network of digital devices communicating with users and vice versa. New behaviors and activities that may have not been considered before in the design of architectural building types are now commonly found in public and private spaces throughout the world. In an attempt to explore and experiment with the concept of interplay between digital and physical environments, an option studio was proposed to 4th year architecture students to develop a new type of augmented architecture that corresponds to changes in human social behavior due to digital technologies. Five pilot projects are presented with experiments conducted to question three social activities commonly found in everyday lives using Arduino prototypes installed in real physical locations. The prototypes were then used as a basis for the development of large-scale projects proposed as augmented architecture.
