summary Design strategies that employ digital and material imprecision to achieve esthetic innovation exhibit high potential to transform the current precision-oriented practices of computation and digital fabrication in architecture. However, such strategies are still in their infancy. We present a design method facilitating intentionally-imprecise esthetic explorations within the framework of digital design and robotic single-point incremental forming. Our method gives access to the esthetic fine-tuning of molds from which architectural objects are cast. Semi-precise computational operations of extending, limiting, deepening and shallowing the geometrical deformations of the mold through robot toolpath fine-tuning are enabled by a digital toolkit featuring parametric modeling, surface curvature analyses, photogrammetry, digital photography and bitmap image retouching and painting. Our method demonstrates the shift of focus from geometric accuracy and control of material behaviors towards intentionally-imprecise digital explorations that yield novel esthetic features of architectural designs. By demonstrating the results of applying our method in the context of an exploration-driven design process, we argue that imprecision can be equally valid to accuracy, opening a vast, excitingly unknown territory for material-mediated esthetic explorations within digital fabrication. Such explorations can interestingly alter the esthetic canons and computational design methods of digital architecture in the nearest future.

summary Artificial intelligence is about to reshape the architectural discipline. After discussing the relations between artificial intelligence and the broader question of automation in architecture, this article focuses on the future of the interaction between humans and intelligent machines. The way machines will understand architecture may be very different from the reading of humans. Since the Renaissance, the architectural discipline has defined itself as a conversation between different stakeholders, the designer, but also the clients and the artisans in charge of the realization of projects. How can this conversation be adapted to the rise of intelligent machines? Such a question is not only a matter of design effectiveness. It is inseparable from expressive and artistic issues. Just like the fascination of modernist architecture for industrialization was intimately linked to the quest for a new poetics of the discipline, our contemporary interest for artificial intelligence has to do with questions regarding the creative core of the architectural discipline.

summary Project InFoamed Matter works with foam and explores the internal logic of the material and develops a construction system based on fluidity and expansion. The basic unit of the system consists of two elements, that continuously exchange their roles in the construction process - the frame (controlling element made of paper or, in later development, from glass or carbon fiber cured in epoxy resin) and the expander (filling element consisting of 2k polyurethane foam). The expander fills up voids within the frame. While initially only the frame plays crucial structural role within a system, the expander being a filling element, eventually the hardening process switches the roles, hardened expander being the structural core and the frame being a form-defining tool. In later development, fiber frame creates a composite together with hardened expander, being able to resist both tension and compression forces. Project further proposes computational model, which generates positions and orientations for placing further components as well as a robotic fiber laying, assembly and injection system, which leads to novel automated construction system based on material behavior.

summary By introducing rapid reproduction, algorithms, and complex formal configurations, the digital era of architecture began a revolution. Architects incorporated the computational capacity of the computer into the design process both as a tool and as a critical component of the theories and practice of architecture as a whole. As we move into what has been coined “the second digital turn,” a period in which digital integration is considered ubiquitous, how can we consider, prepare, and propel towards the next technological innovation to significantly inform design thinking, representation, and manifestation? What tools are available to investigate this speculative design future and how can they be implemented? If the integration of technology in architecture is now a given, perhaps the next digital design era is not just digital but virtual. As new technologies emerge the potential for integrating the virtual design world with our physical senses affords novel possibilities for interactive design, simulation, analysis and construction. Hybrid reality technologies including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), embody the potential to supersede conventional representation methodologies such as drawing, rendering, physical modeling, and animation. As they become increasingly pervasive, they will transform how we communicate ideas and data as spatial concepts. Further, they will reform the construct of the built environment when applied to both materiality and fabrication. This paper will describe the incorporation of VR as a tool in various classroom and laboratory settings, recognize the educational outcomes of this incorporation, and identify the potential relationship of these technologies to future academic exploration and application to practice.

summary The Architecture of ScarCity Game is a board game used as a pedagogical tool that challenges architecture students by involving them in a series of experimental design sessions to understand the design process of scarcity and the actual relation between the craft and the digital. This means "pragmatic delivery processes and material constraints, where the exchange between the artisan of handmade, representing local skills and technology of the digitally conceived is explored" (Huang 2013). The game focuses on understanding the different variables of the crafted design process of traditional communities under conditions of scarcity (Michel and Bevan 1992). This requires first analyzing the spatial environmental model of interaction, available human and natural resources, and the dynamic relationship of these variables in a digital era. In the first stage (Pre-Agency), the game set the concept of the craft by limiting students design exploration from a minimum possible perspective developing locally available resources and techniques. The key elements of the design process of traditional knowledge communities have to be identified (Preez 1984). In other words, this stage is driven by limited resources + chance + contingency. In the second stage (Post-Agency) students taking the architects´ role within this communities, have to speculate and explore the interface between the craft (local knowledge and low technological tools), and the digital represented by computation data, new technologies available and construction. This means the introduction of strategy + opportunity + chance as part of the design process. In this sense, the game has a life beyond its mechanics. This other life challenges the participants to exploit the possibilities of breaking the actual boundaries of design. The result is a tool to challenge conventional methods of teaching and leaning controlling a prescribed design process. It confronts the rules that professionals in this field take for granted. The game simulates a 'fake' reality by exploring in different ways with surveyed information. As a result, participants do not have anything 'real' to lose. Instead, they have all the freedom to innovate and be creative.

summary Innovation in parametric design and robotic fabrication is in reciprocal relationship with the investigation of new structural types that facilitated by this technology. The stressed skin structure has historically been used to create lightweight curved structures, mainly in engineering applications such as naval vessels, aircraft, and space shuttles. Stressed skin structures were first referred to by Fairbairn in 1849. In England, the first use of the structure was in the Mosquito night bomber of World War II. In the United States, stressed skin structures were used at the same time, when the Wright Patterson Air Force Base designed and fabricated the Vultee BT-15 fuselage using fiberglass-reinforced polyester as the face material and both glass-fabric honeycomb and balsa wood core. With the renewed interest in wood as a structural building material, due to its sustainable characteristics, new potentials for the use of stressed skin structures made from wood on building scales are emerging. The authors present a material informed system that is characterized by its adaptability to freeform curvature on exterior surfaces. A stressed skin system can employ thinner materials that can be bent in their elastic bending range and then fixed into place, leading to the ability to be architecturally malleable, structurally highly efficient, as well as easily buildable. The interstitial space can also be used for services. Advanced digital fabrication and robotic manufacturing methods further enhance this capability by enabling precisely fabricated tolerances and embedded assembly instructions; these are essential to fabricate complex, multi-component forms. Through a prototypical installation, the authors demonstrate and discuss the technology of the stressed skin structure in wood considering current digital design and fabrication technologies.

summary Despite, the innovation of additive manufacturing (AM) technology, and in spite of the existence of natural bio-materials offering notable mechanical properties, materials used for AM are not necessarily more sustainable than materials used in traditional manufacturing. Furthermore, potential material savings may be partially overshadowed by the relative toxicity of the material and binders used for AM during fabrication and post-fabrication processes, as well as the energy usage necessary for the production and processing workflow. Soil as a building material offers a cheap, sustainable alternative to non-biodegradable material systems, and new developments in earth construction show how earthen buildings can create light, progressive, and sustainable structures. Nevertheless, existing large-scale earthen construction methods can only produce highly simplified shapes with rough detailing. This research proposes to use robotic additive manufacturing processes to overcome current limitations of constructing with earth, supporting complex three-dimensional geometries, and the creation of novel organic composites. More specifically the research focuses on robotic binder-jetting with granular bio-composites and non-toxic binding agents such as hydrogels. This paper is divided into two main sections: (1) biodegradable material system, and (2) multi-move robotic process, and describes the most crucial fabrication parameters such as compaction pressure, density of binders, deposition strategies and toolpath planning as well as identifying the architectural implications of using this novel biodegradable fabrication process. The combination of soil and hydrogel as building material shows the potential of a fully reversible construction process for architectural components and foresees its potential full-scale architectural implementations.

summary The project described in this paper explores the integration of custom-made soft robotic muscles into a component-based surface. This project is part of a broader research that focuses on new material behaviors and their capacity to produce adaptive and dynamic material systems. The paper discusses the use of a pneumatic system as a form of material-based actuation. It presents the ongoing research into the capacity of integrated [pneu] structures to generate kinetic movement within a component-based assembly to produce a responsive and “programmable” architectural skin. This is a prototype-based exploration that demonstrates different kinds of movement achieved by different silicone muscle types and proposes a light modular construct, its components, and patterns of aggregation that work in unison with the silicone muscles to produce a dynamic architectural skin. The project is informed by a history of pneumatic structures, the technology of soft robotics, and a kit-of-parts design strategy.

summary This paper introduces an adaptive robotic spatial aggregation system for the development of an intricate self-supporting glass structure. Rather than using discrete and standardized building elements in the design and fabrication process, this research focuses on utilizing a non-arbitrary shape as an aggregated material for autonomous robotic assembly. More specifically, this paper presents an adaptive robotic fabrication pipeline that measures the size of hollow glass balls (inaccurate materials) as fabrication units to aggregate the entire glass structure. Ultraviolet (UV) curing adhesive is used as the bond between each glass element. Thus, through the live robotic programming as well as various combinations of spherical glass objects and UV curing adhesives/devices, the entire glass structure is self-supported. The project is aimed not only at the development of algorithms and a robotic fabrication system, but also the exploration of the aesthetics of glass materials. In other words, this project investigates a flexible and adaptable framework in response to live sensor data for the design and fabrication of nonstandard spatial structures aggregated out of discrete spherical glass elements, and it further explores glass material aesthetic and perception of architecture.

summary This paper discusses the potential of emerging digital fabrication techniques to produce material-efficient thin folded concrete structures. Although in the 50s and 60s folded structures provided a common optimal solution for spanning large distances without additional vertical supports, today, the number of these projects decreased significantly due to their complicated formworks and labour-intensive realization. Digital fabrication methods for concrete hold the promise to efficiently produce intricate folded mass-customized shapes with enhanced load-bearing capacity. This paper focuses on a robotic slip-forming process, Smart Dynamic Casting (SDC), to produce various thin-walled folded concrete elements with the same formwork providing smooth surface finish and gradual variations along the height. An empirical research methodology was applied to evaluate the fabrication feasibility of digitally designed thin folded geometries with one-to-one scale prototypes. Despite the discovered design limitations due to fabrication and material constraints, the exploration led to a new promising research direction, termed 'Digital Casting'.

summary The construction industry faces numerous challenges related to productivity, sustainability, and meeting global demands (Hatoum and Nassereddine 2020; Carra et al. 2018; Barbosa, Woetzel, and Mischke 2017; Bock 2015; Linner 2013). In response, the automation of design and construction has emerged as a promising solution. In the past three decades, researchers and innovators in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) fields have made significant strides in automating various aspects of building construction, utilizing computational design and robotic fabrication processes (Dubor et al. 2019). However, synthesizing innovation in automation encounters several obstacles. First, there is a lack of an established venue for information sharing, making it difficult to build upon the knowledge of peers. First, the absence of a well-established platform for information sharing hinders the ability to effectively capitalize on the knowledge of peers. Consequently, much of the research remains isolated, impeding the rapid dissemination of knowledge within the field (Mahbub 2015). Second, the absence of a standardized and unified process for automating design and construction leads to the individual development of standards, workflows, and terminologies. This lack of standardization presents a significant obstacle to research and learning within the field. Lastly, insufficient training materials hinder the acquisition of skills necessary to effectively utilize automation. Traditional in-person robotics training is resource-intensive, expensive, and designed for specific platforms (Peterson et al. 2021; Thomas 2013).

summary The research set out in this paper investigates the conception, testing, and implementation of an advanced and bespoke workflow. By hybridizing a diverse set of technologies and processes, an innovative fabrication strategy was developed that combines large scale glue-laminated timber frames with a robotic band-saw application. The design strategy was influenced by a number of key preoccupations: exploring the relationship between drawing and making, evenly distributing analogue and digital technologies, and advancing alternatives modes of architectural practice. The project regards intuitive design processes as an important driver and looked to apply digital tools lightly, aiming to precisely embed them within established timber fabrication processes. This workflow was tested through the design and fabrication of a timber skeleton that provides the structural system for a library building at Hooke Park and acts as an articulated armature supporting the library’s envelope and accommodates its internal workings. Through the production of the sculptural skeleton, the project challenges conventions of existing methodologies and ultimately brings about a morphologic innovation in timber construction through the closed geometry glulam component.

summary This paper discussed the exploration of computational design and robotic fabrication with Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing techniques in a robotic metal printing workshop in Digital Futures 2018. Based on the previous research on structural-performance based design and robotic fabrication, this year's workshop mainly focused on the Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing techniques and its possible outcomes. A prototype chair was tested for preparation. And the final target of the workshop was to build a bridge about 11m across the river. Through this metal printed bridge project, several computational optimization methods were applied to fulfill the final design. And Wire-Arc Additive Manufacturing techniques with robotic fabrication were carried out during the fabrication process.

summary It is widely held that sometime around 2006, the World Wide Web as we knew it mutated into Web 2.0. This colloquial label signaled a shift from an Internet designed for us to an Internet designed by us. Nowhere was this more explicitly stated than in Time Magazine’s 2006 Person of the Year selection: You. More than a decade later, Internet browsers have evolved into ubiquitous interfaces accessible from mobile devices, tablet computers, public kiosks, workstations, laptops, etc. It would, therefore, not be an overstatement to say that the browser is the most widespread content canvas in the world. Designers frequently use web browsers for their ability to exhibit and organize content. They are the sites for portfolios, announcements, magazines, and at times, discussions. But despite its flexibility and rich infrastructure, rarely is the browser used to generate design elements. Thanks to advanced web development languages like JavaScript and open-source code libraries, such as p5.JS, Matter.JS, and Three.JS, browsers now support interactive and spatial content. Typically, these tools are used to generate gimmicks or visual effects, such as the parallax illusion or the infinite scroll. But if we perceive the browser as a timebased picture plane, we can immediately recognize its architectonic potential. This paper puts forth a method for engaging the creative potential of web-based media and Internet browsers. Through example projects, I argue that the Internet browser is a highly complex spatial plane that warrants more architectural analysis and experimentation.

Can we exploit this phenomenon to produce color and shape changing material systems for the future of design? This paper describes the design process behind the interactive installation, Iridescence, through the logic of two interconnected themes, ‘morphology’ and ‘behavior’. Inspired by the gorget of the Anna’s hummingbird, this 3D printed collar is equipped with a facial tracking camera and an array of 200 rotating quills. The custom-made actuators flip their colors and start to make patterns, in response to the movement of onlookers and their facial expressions. The paper addresses how wearables can become a vehicle for self-expression, capable of influencing social interaction and enhancing one’s sensory experience of the world. Through the lens of this project, the paper proposes ‘bio-inspired emotive matter’ as an interdisciplinary design approach at the intersection of Affective Computing, Artificial Intelligence and Ethology, which can be applied in many design fields. The paper argues that bio-inspired material systems should be used not just for formal or performative reasons, but also as an interface for human emotions to address psycho-social issues.

summary This paper presents intermediate results of an experimental research directed towards development of a method that uses additive manufacturing technology as a generative agent in architectural design process. The primary technique is to variate speed of material deposition of a 3D printer in order to produce undetermined textural effects. These effects demonstrate local variation of material distribution, which is treated as a consequence of interaction between machining parameters and material properties. Current stage of inquiry is concerned with studying the impact of these textural artefacts on structure. Experiments demonstrate that manipulating distribution of matter locally results in more optimal structural performance, it solves printability issues of overhanging geometry without the need for additional supports and provides variation to the surface. The research suggests aesthetic and structural benefits of applying the developed method for mass-customized fabrication. It questions the linear thinking that is predominant in the field of 3D printing and provides an approach that articulates interaction between digital and material logics as it directs the formation of an object that is informed by both.

summary Encompassing a series of experiments with atmospheric scenography the following paper maps out the relationships between different materials and energetic flows as part of a spatial design. These investigations emanate from the basis that poetic relationships between material and immaterial processes can induce new meaning to the ways we inhabit our environment. In diffusing the boundaries between states of matter in the environment and the perceiver, the unfolding atmospheric processes enacted here function as perceptual amplifiers for transformations on scales that are usually not sensually accessible. The focus shifts from the concrete to the in-between. The visualization and enaction of flows that make up our surroundings suggest a greater involvement of oneself with the environment.1 Through these experiments we demonstrate 1) how spatial continuity can be achieved in relating attributes of dynamic behavior of water, vapor, air, sound, and light to significances in space; 2) that the indifferent role of the human perceiver is challenged in making their impact and responsiveness to the environment part of the spatial composition itself; and 3) how the expressive qualities of atmospheric variables can be used to experience layers of meaning in spaces, that are usually not comprehensible (such as ecological dimensions of water use).

summary This paper describes a framework for discrete computational design and fabrication in the context of automation. Whereas digital design and fabrication are technical notions, automation immediately has societal and political repercussions. Automation relates to industrialization and mechanisation—allowing to historically reconnect the digital while bypassing the post-modern, deconstructivist, or parametric decades. Using a series of built prototypes making use of timber, this paper will describe how the combined technologies of automation and discreteness enable both technical efficiencies and new architectural interest. Both projects are based on timber sheet materials, cut and folded into larger elements that are then assembled into functional structures. Both projects are also fragments of larger housing blocks. Discrete building blocks are presented from a technical perspective as occupying a space in between programmable matter and modular prefabrication. Timber is identified as an ideal material for automated discrete construction. From an architectural perspective, the paper discusses the implications of an architecture based on parts that remain autonomous from the whole.

summary This paper focuses on a new form making method of spontaneous materiality under limited digital control, as a supplement to the trending method of digital materiality. A specific emphasis is placed on the connection between material selection and sensational expression in the contemporary information and digital technologies era. Spontaneous materiality refers to the alteration of material attributes by natural forces. The current techniques of digital materiality rely on accurate digital control and inhibit from the intervention of any unpredictable material variable, which shows excessive scientific calculations and a loss of artistic articulation in design. In the new form making method proposed here, intentional yet limited digital control sets the material framework where the combination of soft and hard materials takes place. With the influence of gravity and spatiotemporal accumulation of selected materials, the fusion of softness and hardness brings a coexistence of different material states and qualities in one object. Thus an integration of shape and matter produces a blurring boundary between physical material and digital form, and more importantly, a sensational experience with expectational slippages of vision and touch. Additional to the ongoing discussion of computation, this design research expands the potential of computation by restricting its influence.

summary Digital technologies have recently been at the forefront of the causal link between making and design. A growing number of architecture programs of universities incorporates fabrication to the educational environment, and even to the curriculum. Fabrication technology is now considered among the set of tools students are expected to acquire a basic knowledge of and skills in. Nevertheless, the pedagogical potential of fabrication in communicating traditions of making is underused in an oversight of the continuity of the relevant know-how. Our position is that traditions of making can be the subject matter of fabrication with the objective to remedy the role of fabrication tools in architectural history, sustainable architectural production, and in the field of digital heritage. In this paper, we report on two comparative studies that illustrate how the instrumental factors of two historical crafts can be articulated using fabrication.
