title Intelligent Multi-Objective Optimization Method for Complex Building Layout based on Pedestrian Flow Organization - A case study of People's Court building in Anhui, China
source M. Haeusler, M. A. Schnabel, T. Fukuda (eds.), Intelligent & Informed - Proceedings of the 24th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand, 15-18 April 2019, pp. 271-280

summary The pedestrian flow of the building influences and determines the layout of the building's plan. For buildings with complex flow such as courts, airports, and stations, mixed flow line and low traffic efficiency are prone to be problems. However, the optimization of the layout of complex flow buildings usually relies on the architect's experience to judge and trials to improve. To overcome these problems, we attempt to establish a parametric model of buildings' plan (taking a typical court building as an example) with information about the different pedestrian flow and functional groups. Based on the Rhino and Grasshopper platform, we take the minimum of different pedestrian flow path length and the maximum of total spatial integration value and the minimum of total spatial entropy value as the starting point, combines pathfinding algorithm, Space Syntax and multi-objective genetic algorithm to optimize space allocation. The result shows that, compared with the original scheme, the intelligent optimised scheme can reduce the spatial waste caused by improper flow organisation, effectively improve space transportation capacity and spatial organization efficiency.

summary As a contextual and passive design strategy, solar envelopes play a great role in determining building mass based on desirable sun access during the predefined period. With the rapid evolution of digital tools, the design method of solar envelopes varies in different computational platforms. However, current approaches still lack in covering the detailed complex geometry and relevant information of the surrounding context. This, consequently, affects missing information during contextual analysis and simulation of solar envelopes. This study proposes a subtractive method of solar envelopes by considering the geometrical attribute contained in the point cloud of TLS (terrestrial laser scanner) dataset. Integration of point cloud into the workflow of solar envelopes not only increases the robustness of final geometry of existing solar envelopes but also enhances awareness of architects during contextual analysis due to consideration of surface properties of the existing environment.

summary In this paper, a method based on UAV photogrammetry is proposed to estimate the solar energy potential of the building surface. This methodology goes from the acquired aerial images captured by the camera mounted on UAV. 3D model of the urban context in study area was extracted from the aerial images using SFM and MVS algorithms, which could be directly applied to the Ladybug plugin as analysis objects. Estimates of solar radiation are expressed by means of data visualization. The results showed that the UAV photogrammetry could demonstrate the geometry and texture of residential buildings precisely and the solar radiation simulation results showed significant spatial and temporal variations in solar radiation on residential buildings.

summary As the medium of the environment, a building's environment performance-based generative design cannot be separated from intelligent data processing. Sustainable building design should seek an optimized form of environmental performance through a complete set of intelligent induction, autonomous analysis and feedback systems. This paper analyzed the trends in architectural design development in the era of algorithms and data and the status quo of building generative design based on environmental performance, as well as highlighting the importance of physical experiments. Furthermore, a design method for self-generating environmental performance of urban high-rise buildings by applying artificial intelligence neural network algorithms to a customized physical wind tunnel is proposed, which mainly includes a morphology parameter control and environmental data acquisition system, code translation of environmental evaluation rules and architecture of a neural network algorithm model. The design-oriented intelligent prediction can be generated directly from the target environmental requirements to the architectural forms.

title Catenary Wooden Roof Structures: Precedent knowledge for future algorithmic design and construction optimisation
source Dokonal, W, Hirschberg, U and Wurzer, G (eds.), Digital Design Reconsidered - Proceedings of the 41st Conference on Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe 2023) - Volume 1, Graz, 20-22 September 2023, pp. 611–620
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2023.1.611
summary The timber industry is expanding, including construction wood product applications such as glue-laminated wood products (R. Sikkema et al., 2023). To boost further utilisation of engineered wood products in architecture, further development and optimisation of related tectonic systems is required. Integration of digital design technologies in this endeavour presents opportunities for a more performative and spatially diverse architecture production, even in construction contexts typified by limited means and/or resources. This paper reports on historic precedent case study research that informs an ongoing larger study focussing on novel algorithmic methods for the design and production of lightweight, large-span, catenary glulam roof structures. Given their structural operation in full tension, catenary-based roof structures substantially reduce material needs when compared with those relying on straight beams (Wong and Crolla, 2019). Yet, the manufacture of their non-standard geometries typically requires costly bespoke hardware setups, having resulted in recent projects trending away from the more spatially engaging geometric experiments of the second half of the 20th century. The study hypothesis that the evolutionary design optimisation of this tectonic system has the potential to re-open and expand its practically available design solution space. This paper covers the review of a range of built projects employing catenary glulam roof system, starting from seminal historic precedents like the Festival Hall for the Swiss National Exhibition EXPO 1964 (A. Lozeron, Swiss, 1964) and the Wilkhahn Pavilions (Frei Otto, Germany, 1987), to contemporary examples, including the Grandview Heights Aquatic Centre (HCMA Architecture + Design, Canada, 2016). It analysis their structural concept, geometric and spatial complexity, fabrication and assembly protocols, applied construction detailing solutions, and more, with as aim to identify methods, tools, techniques, and construction details that can be taken forward in future research aimed at minimising construction complexity. Findings from this precedent study form the basis for the evolutionary-algorithmic design and construction method development that is part of the larger study. By expanding the tectonic system’s practically applicable architecture design solution space and facilitating architects’ access to a low-tech producible, spatially versatile, lightweight, eco-friendly, wooden roof structure typology, this study contributes to environmentally sustainable building.

title Acoustic Simulation and Conditioning in Vaulted Structures - Faceted Stereotomic Strategies for Multi-listener Spaces
source M. Haeusler, M. A. Schnabel, T. Fukuda (eds.), Intelligent & Informed - Proceedings of the 24th CAADRIA Conference - Volume 1, Victoria University of Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand, 15-18 April 2019, pp. 403-412

summary This paper examines faceted tessellations in an acoustic vault ceiling typology for the enhancement of human speech comfort in multi-listener environments. Geometric modelling explores simulated results for various tessellation arrangements within the overall segmentation of a global ceiling geometry. Where pattern-based design for acoustic surfaces often overlooks the optimisation of vault typologies, the tests demonstrated in this research seek a trade-off between acoustic properties and faceted detailing. This involves the performance-based design of micro joint topologies and ruled-surface geometries, and a macro-analysis of the vaulted surface for acoustic studies embedded into this workflow, using Pachyderm software.

title The Effect of Hygroscopic Design Parameters on the Programmability of Laminated Wood Composites for Adaptive Façades
source Ji-Hyun Lee (Eds.) "Hello, Culture!"  [18th International Conference, CAAD Futures 2019, Proceedings / ISBN 978-89-89453-05-5] Daejeon, Korea, p. 435
summary Typical adaptive façades respond to external conditions to enhance indoor spaces based on complex mechanical actuators and programmable functions. Hygroscopic embedded properties of wood, as low-cost low-tech programmable material, have been utilized to induce passive motion mechanisms. Wood as anisotropic material allows for different passive programmable motion configurations that relies on several hygroscopic design parameters. This paper explores the effect of these parameters on programmability of laminated wood composites through physical experiments in controlled humidity environment. The paper studies variety of laminated configurations involving different grain orientations, and their effect on maximum angle of deflection and its durability. Angle of deflection is measured using image analysis software that is used for continuous tracking of deflection in relation to time. Durability is studied as the number of complete programmable cycles that wood could withstand before reaching point of failure. Results revealed that samples with highest deflection angle have least programmability durability.

title A generalized framework for designing topological interlocking configurations
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 17 - no. 1, 53-73
summary A topological interlocking configuration is an arrangement of pieces shaped in such a way that the motion of any piece is blocked by its neighbors. A variety of interlocking configurations have been proposed for convex pieces that are arranged in a planar space. Published algorithms for creating a topological interlocking configuration start from a tessellation of the plane (e.g. squares colored as a checkerboard). For each square S of one color, a plane P through each edge E is considered, tilted by a given angle ? against the tessellated plane. This induces a face F supported by P and limited by other such planes nearby. Note that E is interior to the face. By adjacency, the squares of the other color have similarly delimiting faces. This algorithm generates a topological interlocking configuration of tetrahedra or antiprisms. When checked for correctness (i.e. for no overlap), it rests on the tessellation to be of squares. If the tessellation consists of rectangles, then the algorithm fails. If the tessellation is irregular, then the tilting angle is not uniform for each edge and must be determined, in the worst case, by trial and error. In this article, we propose a method for generating topological interlocking configurations in one single iteration over the tessellation or mesh using a height value and a center point type for each tile as parameters. The required angles are a function of the given height and selected center; therefore, angle choices are not required as an initial input. The configurations generated using our method are compared against the configurations generated using the angle-choice approach. The results show that the proposed method maintains the alignment of the pieces and preserves the co-planarity of the equatorial sections of the pieces. Furthermore, the proposed method opens a path of geometric analysis for topological interlocking configurations based on non-planar tessellations.

Big data and machine learning technology have been introduced in many research areas, and they are also making such an attempt in the real estate market. Although real estate price forecasting studies is actively conducted, using support vector machine, machine learning algorithm, AHP method, and so on, validity and accuracy are still not reliable. In this research, we propose a Case-Based Reasoning system using regression analysis to allocate weight of attributes. This proposed system can support to predict the real estate price based on collecting public data and easily update the knowledge about real estate. Since the result shows error rate less than 30% through the experiment, this algorithm gives better performance than previous one. summary The article presents the assessment method for large (horizontally spread) urban investment and its visual impact on the cityscape using digital analyses. The visual impact assessment is often used in relation to facilities which dominate in the cityscape, mainly tall buildings. Various studies, however, examine the impact of wide but relatively low-rising buildings and their impact on the cityscape. The article presents a methodology for the assessment of the visual impact and a case study for a building facility comprising several tightly developed and medium height blocks of buildings in a city center of a significant historical value in Gdañsk, Poland. The research has been based on the Visual Impact Size method (VIS) and a city model consisting of a regular cloud of points (Digital Surface Model). The simulation has been developed using a dedicated C++ software (developed by author). The study aimed at assessing the following: a) to what degree such an urban investment can influence the cityscape; b) how the impact can be analyzed using digital techniques, and c) what input parameters of the analysis are crucial for satisfactory accuracy of its results.

summary Excessive use of aggregate materials and metals in construction should be balanced by increasing use of construction materials from annually renewable resources based on natural lignocellulosic fibers. Parametric design tools gave here a possibility of using an alternative newly developed biocomposite material, for realization of complex geometries. Contemporary digital fabrication tools have enabled precise manufacturing possibilities and sophisticated geometry-making to take place that helped in obtaining high structural behavior of the overall global geometry of the discussed project. This paper presents a process of realizing an experimental structure made from Natural Fiber-Reinforced Polymers (NFRP)- also referred to as biocomposites, which were synthesized from lignocellulosic flexible core reinforced by 3D-veneer layers in a closed-moulding vacuum-assisted process. The biocomposite sandwich panels parameters were developed and defined before the final properties were imbedded in the parametric model. This paper showcases the multi-disciplinarity work between architects, structural engineers and material developers. It allowed the architects to work on the material development themselves and enabled to apply a new created design philosophy by the first author, namely applying ‘Materials as a Design-Tool’. The erected biocomposite segmented shell construction allowed a 1:1 validation for the whole design process, material development and the digital fabrication processes applied. The whole development has been reached after merging an ongoing industrial research project results with academic education at the school of architecture in Stuttgart-Germany.

summary The present research is mainly focused on the development of a system that would be able to offer the potentiality of constructing free-form surfaces by using developable surfaces. Through a deep revision of pre-computational traditional geometric systems based on the classical Descriptive Geometry, after a re-interpretation that design and algorithmic generation tools allow by using computers and digital fabrication hardware as testing ground, a geometric control process has been designed in order to offer the possibility of managing double-curvature complex forms and their adaptation by using developable surfaces. The focal point of this system is proving how developable surfaces are suitable to build architectonical elements at real scale.

title Application of a Vertical Effective Crank–Slider Approach in Reconfigurable Buildings through Computer-Aided Algorithmic Modelling
source Kontovourkis, O, Phocas, MC and Wurzer, G (eds.), Data-Driven Intelligence - Proceedings of the 42nd Conference on Education and Research in Computer Aided Architectural Design in Europe (eCAADe 2024), Nicosia, 11-13 September 2024, Volume 1, pp. 421–430
doi https://doi.org/10.52842/conf.ecaade.2024.1.421
summary Elementary robotics mechanisms based on the effective crank–slider and four–bar kinematics methods have been applied in the past to develop architectural concepts of reconfigurable structures of planar rigid-bar linkages (Phocas et al., 2020; Phocas et al., 2019). The applications referred to planar structural systems interconnected in parallel to provide reconfigurable buildings with rectangular plan section. In enabling structural reconfigurability attributes within the spatial circular section buildings domain, a vertical setup of the basic crank–slider mechanism is proposed in the current paper. The kinematics mechanism is integrated on a column placed at the middle of an axisymmetric circular shaped spatial linkage structure. The definition of target case shapes of the structure is based on a series of numerical geometric analyses that consider certain architectural and construction criteria (i.e., number of structural members, length, system height, span, erectability etc.), as well as structural objectives (i.e., structural behavior improvement against predominant environmental actions) aiming to meet diverse operational requirements and lightweight construction. Computer-aided algorithmic modelling is used to analyze the system's kinematics, in order to provide a solid foundation and enable rapid adaptation for mechanisms that exhibit controlled reconfigurations. The analysis demonstrates the implementation of digital parametric design tools for the investigation of the kinematics of the system at a preliminary design stage, in avoiding thus time-demanding numerical analysis processes. The design process may further provide enhanced interdisciplinary performance-based design outcomes.

summary The granary building form has significant effects on thermal performance, especially in hot climate regions. This research is focused on exploring the influences of parameters relevant to building form design on thermal performance for granary buildings in Jiangsu and Anhui, China(both provinces belong to the hot summer region). The usual method is to use simulation software to perform a sensitivity analysis of thermal performance to assess the impacts of granary design parameters and identify the essential characteristics. However, many factors are affecting the thermal performance of granary buildings. The use of traditional energy simulation software requires calculation and analysis of a large number of models. In this study, we build a machine learning model to predict the thermal performance of granary buildings and identify the most influential design parameters of thermal performance in granary building. The input parameters include outdoor temperature, building height, aspect ratio, orientation, heat transmission coefficient of the wall and roof, and overall scale. The results show that the overall building scale is the most influential variable to the annual electricity consumption for cooling, whereas the heat transmission coefficient of the roof is the most influential to the change of the indoor temperature.

title Hybrid design method for wind-adaptive architecture
source International Journal of Architectural Computing vol. 17 - no. 4, 307-322
summary The linkage of individual design skills and computer-based capabilities in the design process offers yet unexplored environment-adaptive architectural solutions. The conventional perception of architecture is changing, creating a space for reconfigurable, “living” buildings responding, for instance, to climatic influences. Integrating the element of wind to the architectural morphogenesis process can lead toward wind-adaptive designs that in turn can enhance the wind microclimate in their vicinity. Geometric relations coupled with material properties enable to create a tensegrity- membrane structural element, bending in the wind. First, the properties of such elements are investigated by a hybrid method, that is, computer simulations are coupled with physical prototyping. Second, the system is applied to basic- geometry building envelopes and investigated using computational fluid dynamics simulations. Third, the findings are transmitted to a case study design of a streamlined building envelope. The results suggest that a wind-adaptive building envelope plays a great role in reducing the surface wind suction and enhancing the wind microclimate.

summary Building performance simulation tools have the potential for aiding the decision-making process in early design stages of an architectural project. As traditional simulation tools are based on a static design and adaptive façades encompass an envisioned movement of construction elements, there is a lack of supporting tools and workflows that can correctly evaluate the performance of such building envelopes at an early stage. The presented ongoing research focuses on developing efficient parametric performance-based approaches for assessing the energy consumption in buildings with adaptive façades, combining generative architectural design and performance analysis in a seamless workflow. To this end, we combine a new algorithmic design research tool with the well-established whole-building simulation engine EnergyPlus. The purpose of linking both tools lies in the possibility of generating and simulating models with adaptive façade mechanisms through a single script, evaluating and using the simulation results to adjust the model's parameters and develop optimized control strategies.

summary Optimization of Natural Ventilation process in highrise buildings is one of the most complex and least addressed phenomenon in the field of sustainable architecture. This issue requires urgent consideration to reduce the computation time due to fast growing demand of vertical construction in metropolitan cities. Until recently most highrise buildings have been operated with mechanical systems, causing high energy loads in hot climates and have high carbon footprints. Highrise buildings with natural ventilation and sky gardens can address these problems. This study involves the development of a Genetic Algorithm (GA) addressing the multi objective optimization of natural ventilation in tall buildings incorporated with Sky-Gardens at different levels all connected through a central ventilation shaft. The fitness function for this GA is composed of three scales; temperature reduction due to evapotranspiration of plants of sky-gardens, optimum wind velocity for channelizing air inside the corridors and ventilation shaft, and optimum building configuration. The aim is to find the best solutions for tall buildings constructed in hot climate through the provision of optimized airflow paths suitable for the effectiveness of natural ventilation, within a reasonably short computation time for supporting design processes at early stage.

title Integrating building footprint prediction and building massing - an experiment in Pittsburgh

summary We present a novel method for generating building geometry using deep learning techniques based on contextual geometry in urban context and explore its potential to support building massing. For contextual geometry, we opted to investigate the building footprint, a main interface between urban and architectural forms. For training, we collected GIS data of building footprints and geometries of parcels from Pittsburgh and created a large dataset of Diagrammatic Image Dataset (DID). We employed a modified version of a VGG neural network to model the relationship between (c) a diagrammatic image of a building parcel and context without the footprint, and (q) a quadrilateral representing the original footprint. The option for simple geometrical output enables direct integration with custom design workflows because it obviates image processing and increases training speed. After training the neural network with a curated dataset, we explore a generative workflow for building massing that integrates contextual and programmatic data. As trained model can suggest a contextual boundary for a new site, we used Massigner (Rhee and Chung 2019) to recommend massing alternatives based on the subtraction of voids inside the contextual boundary that satisfy design constraints and programmatic requirements. This new method suggests the potential that learning-based method can be an alternative of rule-based design methods to grasp the complex relationships between design elements.
