summary This study examines the development of intelligent architecture capable of reading real-time data and controlling spatial configurations accordingly. In terms of responsiveness at an architectural scale, it is questionable whether an architectural system can adapt or adjust its spatial configurations to the time-based changes of social activities. The urban open data movement allows individuals to navigate or measure real-time occurrences in cities, and such data can be used to accommodate users' demands for social space. Exploiting urban open data, the design experiment focused on extracting data pertaining to real occurrences of social activities and weather conditions in a city, setting an algorithm mapping the sequence from the data to architectural behaviours, and simulating the architectural model in real time. By means of proposing a design strategy, this research contributes to cross-disciplinary approaches to developing smart buildings and cities.

summary The AEC industry has been facing a digital transformation for improving services involved in buildings lifecycle, fostered by two disruptive technologies: Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Internet of Things (IoT). However, the literature lacks discussions regarding applications and challenges of BIM and IoT systems in the AEC. This Systematic Literature Mapping addresses this gap through search, analysis, and classification of 75 journal article abstracts published between 2015 and 2019. An increase of articles over the period is observed, predominantly with technical and processual solutions for Construction and Operation and Maintenance. The interoperability of data is a key challenge to organizations.

summary In the early months of 2019, air pollution in Bangkok reached a record high, bringing national and international attention to the air quality in the South East Asian cosmopolitan. Although applications such as real-time pollution maps provide an environmental reading from the exterior, such information reveals the ‘here and now,’ where its record is inevitably lost through the ‘refreshing’ process of the live update and does not take increment and accumulation as factors to consider. The project was conceived around understanding the human body as precisely that medium that resists classification as either an interior or exterior environment that inherently performs as an impressionable record of its surroundings. Can a city’s toxicity be read through its living constituents? Can the living bodies that dwell, navigate, breathe, and process habitable environments be accessed? Can architecture retain a degree of independence while also performing as a beacon for the collective? Along this line of questioning, it was found that human hair can be transformed from a material that is effortlessly and continuously grown, cut, stylized, and discarded, and instead be intercepted and used in the production of public information gathering. Foll(i)cle is a collective being made of discarded human hair. Performing as a parliament for collectivity embedded with a protocol; the hairy pavilion invites the public in and presents them with a device at the center that hosts all the necessary equipment and information for anonymously and voluntarily providing hair samples for heavy metal analysis, the data of which is used in making a publically accessible toxi-cartography. Although humans are the primary subject for this study, the results suggest that extending the methodology to non-humans could prove useful in reading urban toxicity through various life forms.

summary Recently, indoor-intelligent services like "Tele-presence" have made quite an advancement. Therefore, to completely 1) understand the diverse indoor environment, 2) efficiently calculate similarity for semantic spaces and 3) for defining an efficient path movement for an augmented reality-based Avatar; we propose spatial features computation, graphical representation and Topology-based graph-similarity measure for complex domains to overcome the limited visibility of an Avatar. Thus, collision with the surrounding objects in a given indoor-space can be avoided. This study begins by securing spatial features of objects, e.g., furniture, doorways, etc., of an indoor environment from an FBSMAP (Function-Behaviour-Structure Map). Then, we establish a method for defining similarity for locations and paths.

summary By introducing rapid reproduction, algorithms, and complex formal configurations, the digital era of architecture began a revolution. Architects incorporated the computational capacity of the computer into the design process both as a tool and as a critical component of the theories and practice of architecture as a whole. As we move into what has been coined “the second digital turn,” a period in which digital integration is considered ubiquitous, how can we consider, prepare, and propel towards the next technological innovation to significantly inform design thinking, representation, and manifestation? What tools are available to investigate this speculative design future and how can they be implemented? If the integration of technology in architecture is now a given, perhaps the next digital design era is not just digital but virtual. As new technologies emerge the potential for integrating the virtual design world with our physical senses affords novel possibilities for interactive design, simulation, analysis and construction. Hybrid reality technologies including virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), embody the potential to supersede conventional representation methodologies such as drawing, rendering, physical modeling, and animation. As they become increasingly pervasive, they will transform how we communicate ideas and data as spatial concepts. Further, they will reform the construct of the built environment when applied to both materiality and fabrication. This paper will describe the incorporation of VR as a tool in various classroom and laboratory settings, recognize the educational outcomes of this incorporation, and identify the potential relationship of these technologies to future academic exploration and application to practice.

summary Embedded computation allows built space to be intelligent and get smarter, becoming interactive and gaining agency with ability not to merely adapt to changing conditions, but to process information and react, observe and learn, communicate and make decisions. The paper investigates agency of interactive space based on interpretation of input data, like users' response to the spatial agency, data from environment or other actors, and ability to change its performance accordingly. The research is focused on the role of interactive space as an active participant in social relationship communicating with users, constantly changing and having its' attitude. The research is aimed at defining social role of interactive environments and explains how they interact with users, what qualities are enabled by interactive behaviour and how do they influence space perception, revealing the significance of bi-directional communication between society and smart spaces. Interactive space does not just providing location for activities and facility for lifestyle, but influences these activities. Users and interactive space constitute one social network being constantly aware of each other establishing bi-directional communication.

Spatial metrics, building codes and client requirements form the main considerations for many designers, yet new layers of data are impacting the way cities and inhabitants interact with each. This data can be used to more effectively analyse and predict patterns and behaviors to produce environments better suited to users.This paper reviews a selection of ideas from across digital architectural discourse by discussing tangible outcomes from a practitioner point of view and advocates for a greater integration of this digital cultural context into the design process. This paper considers a city-wide digital logic, rather than a new-age technological zeitgeist, that is as much a part of a city as its buildings are and through this provides a lens into our environment and devices that can be used to influence design at multiple scales.

summary Elementary robotics mechanisms based on the effective crank–slider and four–bar kinematics methods have been applied in the past to develop architectural concepts of reconfigurable structures of planar rigid-bar linkages (Phocas et al., 2020; Phocas et al., 2019). The applications referred to planar structural systems interconnected in parallel to provide reconfigurable buildings with rectangular plan section. In enabling structural reconfigurability attributes within the spatial circular section buildings domain, a vertical setup of the basic crank–slider mechanism is proposed in the current paper. The kinematics mechanism is integrated on a column placed at the middle of an axisymmetric circular shaped spatial linkage structure. The definition of target case shapes of the structure is based on a series of numerical geometric analyses that consider certain architectural and construction criteria (i.e., number of structural members, length, system height, span, erectability etc.), as well as structural objectives (i.e., structural behavior improvement against predominant environmental actions) aiming to meet diverse operational requirements and lightweight construction. Computer-aided algorithmic modelling is used to analyze the system's kinematics, in order to provide a solid foundation and enable rapid adaptation for mechanisms that exhibit controlled reconfigurations. The analysis demonstrates the implementation of digital parametric design tools for the investigation of the kinematics of the system at a preliminary design stage, in avoiding thus time-demanding numerical analysis processes. The design process may further provide enhanced interdisciplinary performance-based design outcomes.

summary The paper aims for new urban forms of property enabled by computation models of distributed ledgers as they are currently being deployed with technologies like Blockchain. Distributed ledgers promise to constitute whole environments by chaining and sharing blocks of data. Upscaling this prospective, the paper describes objects with unique and strong compositional characteristics that act as closed black boxes and are able through distribution to create large scale effects. The final result of the nesting is the Interchain, a chain of chains that initiate with the characteristics of the contributing chains, and due to the distribution, unprecedented patterns arise. The resulting Interchain, observed with spatial and architectural characteristics, can project a new building form and a new urban model based on blockchain theory.

summary This paper reports on ongoing research investigating applications and methodologies for algorithms and artificial intelligence within urban design. Although the research recognises not all design is numerically quantifiable, it posits that certain aspects are. It provides evidence of algorithmically derived solutions-in many cases-being as good as those developed by a design professional. I situate the research within a series of examples of design quantification and description. Before discussing practical implementations of algorithmic spatial planning by the co-work start-up WeWork. These projects demonstrate an ongoing narrative to establish spatial syntactical rules for building and urban design. Finally, the paper reports on original research that aims to apply algorithmic space planning to urban design. A work-in-progress, at this stage the finding report on our methodology, preliminary implementation of an algorithmic strategy. It finally presents emerging data pointing to what might happen if the sector does not embrace algorithms and AI.

summary In the last decades, the quantity of information produced and distributed due to digital resources has been growing; big data is contributing to a better perception of our cities. The aim of this paper is to understand spatial segregation in the city of S?o Paulo (a city known by its social inequality and urban poverty) by scraping social media tags of emotions. We compared aspects that suggest socio-spatial inequalities: urban poor versus feelings of love and hate, versus feelings of joy and fear and the social vulnerability index as background. Three issues are considered in this research: the emergence of urban space big data, digital inclusion, and architects and urbanists' access to big data. To unveil urban poor singularities through social media is an opportunity to reconnect communities to urban design.

summary In this paper, I present the commercial, urban-scale gunshot detection system ShotSpotter in contrast with a range of ecological sensing examples which monitor animal vocalizations. Gunshot detection sensors are used to alert law enforcement that a gunshot has occurred and to collect evidence. They are intertwined with processes of criminalization, in which the individual, rather than the collective, is targeted for punishment. Ecological sensors are used as a “passive” practice of information gathering which seeks to understand the health of a given ecosystem through monitoring population demographics, and to document the collective harms of anthropogenic change (Stowell and Sueur 2020). In both examples, the ability of sensing infrastructures to “join up and speed up” (Gabrys 2019, 1) is increasing with the use of machine learning to identify patterns and objects: a new form of expertise through which the differential agendas of these systems are implemented and made visible. I trace the differential agendas of these systems as they manifest through varied components: the spatial distribution of hardware in the existing urban environment and / or landscape; the software and other informational processes that organize and translate the data; the visualization of acoustical sensing data; the commercial factors surrounding the production of material components; and the apps, platforms, and other forms of media through which information is made available to different stakeholders. I take an interpretive and qualitative approach to the analysis of these systems as cultural artifacts (Winner 1980), to demonstrate how the political and social stakes of the technology are embedded throughout them.

summary According to one of the Sustainable Development Goals (UN, 2018), it is important for cities to be inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. Therefore, it is necessary to value pedestrians and consequently active mobility, giving priority to the concepts of the Transportation Oriented Development (TOD) methodology. Although the Master Plan (BELO HORIZONTE, 2019) proposes that areas located in regional centralities are enhancing active mobility, can residents actually benefit from these resources at a walkable distance to access basic services? Thus, the aim of this research is to utilize digital technologies to visualize, analyze, and assess pedestrians' access conditions to commerce and basic services, identifying areas lacking infrastructure. The goal is for the model to serve as a reference for the development of public policies. To achieve this, metadata was used for parametric modeling to study walkability in the peripheral region of the city of Belo Horizonte.

summary The blockchain is a distributed ledger managed by a peer to peer network that stores all transaction records. The distributed ledger technology offers new possibilities, promising to ensure that data is secure, decentralized and incomparable. In the Architecture, Engineering, Construction (AEC) industry, Building Information Modeling (BIM) has quickly become a standard platform where all parties work together on a single and shared model for collaboration. The issues of Supply Chain Management (SCM) within BIM can be identified in BIM maturity level, based on PAS1193 that developed through Common Data Environment (CDE). The research strategy is to make model and simulation of SCM using BIM and create CDE to become decentralized and integrate the blockchain technology. The smart contract system validates every material and configuration of components within the model from the design stage until the operation stage. Traceability and auditability through an immutable historic eventually be more visible and allow real-time tracking of a material to a construction site providing a history from the origin.

summary This paper presents a visibility analysis for 3D urban environments and its possible applications for urban design. This multi-view visibility analysis tool was generated by 3D isovist in Grasshopper, Rhino. The advantage of this analysis tool is that it can be compared within the measurement area. In addition, setting a visual object different from the existing isovist. The visual object is a landmark of a city space, such as landscape or object. First, the application experimented on the relevance between the calculation time and precision by this analysis tool. Based on the results of this experiment, it applied it to an actual part of an urban space. The multi-view visibility includes confirming the possibility of a comprehensive evaluation on the urban redevelopment and change of the view caused by the building layout plan - by numerical analysis showing the visual characteristics of the area while using 3D isovist theory. The practically applied area is Shinkiba, which is a part of Tokyo's landfill site; and while using the calculated data, multi-view visibility of each plan in the simulation of the visibility map is compared and evaluated.

summary In the past decade, urban researchers have paid significant attention to the emergence of computer science and urban planning. According to the literature, social media as a pool of real-time citizen feedback can be investigated to inform smart city synergies. However, the success factors of such an approach have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, various factors were derived from an extensive literature review to create an efficient e-participation platform. It is explained how our proposed platform 1) complies to the data protection regulations 2) uses advanced text analysis and natural language processing (NLP) tools to identify opinions and emotions 3) maintains persistent communication between citizens and city planners 4) incorporates creative visualisation techniques 5) is informative for its target audience 6) takes into consideration the socio-cultural diversity and 7) can be used as an informing tool in combination with offline methods of participation.

summary We have seen increasing expectations from our cities: as we aim to enable them to become smarter, more efficient and more sustainable. Having these goals makes the urban designing process increasingly complex. Undertaking contemporary urban design and analysis requires a rounded and inclusive approach. In the discussion relating to the smart city there has been attention to infrastructure technology solutions. But ways of estimating the success of more comprehensive urban design interventions is also extremely important. In response to these needs, digital urban design simulation and analysis software packages have been developed to help urban designers model and evaluate their designs before they take shape in the real world. We analyse, and reflect on the current aids available, classifying the urban design software packages which were used in the body of knowledge. In addition, more influential urban design software packages have been reviewed to figure out in which stages of the urban design process, they have applied. This review also helpful for software developer to understand which software packages more useful and which ones need to be developed in future.

title Computational modeling for climate change: Simulating and visualizing a resilient landscape architecture design approach

summary Coastlines are changing, wildfires are raging, cities are getting hotter, and spatial designers are charged with the task of designing to mitigate these unknowns. This research examines computational digital workflows to understand and alleviate the impacts of climate change on urban landscapes. The methodology includes two separate simulation and visualization workflows. The first workflow uses an animated particle fluid simulator in combination with geographic information systems data, Photoshop software, and three-dimensional modeling and animation software to simulate erosion and sedimentation patterns, coastal inundation, and sea level rise. The second workflow integrates building information modeling data, computational fluid dynamics simulators, and parameters from EnergyPlus and Landsat to produce typologies and strategies for mitigating urban heat island effects. The effectiveness of these workflows is demonstrated by inserting design prototypes into modeled environments to visualize their success or failure. The result of these efforts is a suite of workflows which have the potential to vastly improve the efficacy with which architects and landscape architects use existing data to address the urgency of climate change.
