summary This paper shows a new application of infrared photography technique in human behavior sensing situated in outdoor built environment. By building a system integrated behavior thermal-infrared images acquisition and processing, the characteristic of city pattern and human behavior related to that certain environment can be captured by the infrared camera equipped auto-control unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and be displayed in a processed visualization interface. By exploring a more efficient, smart and accurate method of collecting high spatial and temporal resolution data, a situated and context-aware behavioral visualization workflow can be developed which inform the behavior related environmental literacy in different culture of the architectsandurbandesignersinordertorevealhiddenpatternsinthecities.

summary This paper presents a theoretical blueprint for implementing artificial empathy into the built environment. Transdisciplinary design principles have oriented the creation of a new model for autonomous environments integrating psychology, architecture, digital media, affective computing and interactive UX design. 'The Emoting City', an interactive installation presented at the 2019 Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture, is presented as a first step to explore how to engage AI-driven sensing by integrating human perception, cognition and behaviour in a real-world scenario. The approach described encompasses two main elements: embedded cyberception and responsive surfaces. Its human-AI interface enables new modes of blended interaction that are conducive to self-empathy and insight. It brings forth a new proposition for the development of sensing systems that go beyond social robotics into the field of artificial empathy. The installation innovates in the design of seamless affective computing that combines 'alloplastic' and 'autoplastic' architectures. We believe that our research signals the emergence of a potential revolution in responsive environments, offering a glimpse into the possibility of designing intelligent spaces with the ability to sense, inform and respond to human emotional states in ways that promote personal, cultural and social evolution.

summary The research presented in this paper explores a novel tactile sensor technology for architectural assembly tasks. In order to enable robots to interact both with humans and building elements, several robot control strategies had to be implemented. Therefore, we developed a communication interface between the architectural design environment, a tactile sensor and robot controllers. In particular, by combining tactile feedback with real-time gripper and robot control algorithms, we demonstrate grasp adaptation, object shape and texture estimation, slip and contact detection, force and torque estimation. We investigated the integration of robotic control strategies for human-robot interaction and developed an assembly task in which the robot had to place vertical elements underneath a deformed slab. Finally, the proposed tactile feedback controllers and learned skills are combined together to demonstrate applicability and utility of tactile sensing in collaborative human-robot architectural assembly tasks. Users were able to hand over building elements to the robot or guide the robot through the interaction with building elements. Ultimately this research aims to offer the possibility for anyone to interact with built structures through robotic augmentation.

summary This paper presents our concept, named Interactive Assemblies, which facilitates interaction between man and machine in construction process in which specially designed building components are used as a design interface. In our setup, users physically manipulate and reposition building components. The components, digitized by means of machine sensing, become a part of the design interface. Each of the three experiments included in this paper examines a different robotic sensor approach that helps transfer of data, including the position and shape of each component, back into the digital model. We investigate combinations of material systems (material computation, selfcorrecting assembly) and matching sensors. The accumulated data serves as input for design algorithms and generates robot tool paths for collaborative fabrication. Using real-world geometry to move from virtual design tools directly to physical interaction and back, our research proposes enhanced participation of human actors in robotic construction processes in architecture.

summary Architectural surfaces constantly emit radiant heat fluxes to their surroundings, a phenomenon that is wholly dependent on their geometry and material properties. Therefore, the capacity of 3D scanning techniques to capture the geometry of building surfaces should be extended to sense and capture the surfaces’ thermal behavior in real time. We present an innovative sensor, SMART (Spherical-Motion Average Radiant Temperature Sensor), which captures the thermal characteristics of the built environment by coupling laser geometry scanning with infrared surface temperature detection. Its novelty lies in the combination of the two sensor technologies into an analytical device for radiant temperature mapping. With a sensor-based dynamic thermal-surface model, it is possible to achieve representation and control over one of the major factors affecting human comfort. The results for a case-study of a 3D thermal scan conducted in the recently completed Lewis Center for the Arts at Princeton University are compared with simulation results based on a detailed BIM model of the same space.

summary This paper aims to link human's emotions and cognition to the built environment to improve the user's mental health and well-being. It focuses on cyber-physical adaptive spaces that can respond to the user's physiological and psychological needs based on their biological and neurological data. Through artificial intelligence and affective computing, this paper seeks to create user-oriented spaces that can learn from occupant's behavioral patterns in real-time, reduce user's anxiety and depression, enhance environmental quality, and promote more flexible human-centered designs for people with mental/physical disabilities. To achieve its objectives, this research integrates tangible computing devices/interfaces, robotic self-adjusting structures, interactive systems of control, programmable materials, human behavior, and a sensory network. Through embedded responsiveness and material intelligence, the goal is to blur the lines between the physical, digital, and biological spheres and create cyber-physical spaces that can "feel" and be controlled by the user's mind and feelings.

summary Numerous studies on Space Syntax and Evidence-based Design explored occupancy and movements in the built environment using traditional methods for behavior mapping, such as observation and surveys. This approach, however, has majorly focused on studying such behaviors as aggregated results -totals or averages- to corroborate the idea that people's interactions are outcomes of the influence of space. The research presented in this paper focuses on capturing human occupancy with a high spatiotemporal data resolution of 1 sq.ft per second (0.1 sq.mt./s). This research adapts computer vision to obtain large occupancy datasets in a hospitalization setting for one week, providing opportunities to explore correlations among spatial configurations, architectural programs, organizational activities planned and unplanned, and time. The vision is to develop new analytics for building occupancy dynamics, with the purpose of endorsing the integration of a temporal dimension into architectural research. This study introduces the "Isovist-minute"; a metric that captures the relationship between space and occupancy, towards a point of interest, in a dynamic sequence.

summary Understanding human behavior and preferences are important for urban planning and the design of walkable neighborhoods. However, it remains challenging to study human activity patterns because significant efforts are required to collect the relevant data, convert unstructured data into useful knowledge, and take into consideration different urban contexts. In the context of the heated discussion about urban walkability and amenities, as well as the need of identifying a feasible approach to analyze human activities, this paper proposes a simple and effective metric of the amenity demand patterns, which demonstrates the spatiotemporal distribution of human activities according to the activeness in urban amenities. Such metric has the potential to support the urban study about people, mobility, and built environment, as well as other relevant design thinking. Further, a case study illustrates the data and the new metric can be used in walkability simulations and amenity utilization analysis, thus informing the design decision-making process.

summary This project sets up a design framework that promotes augmenting the human body's interactions exploring methods for merging and blending the users of physical and virtual environments, through the design of wearable devices that are embedded with sensors and actuators. This allows for haptic and visual feedback through the use of data that reflects changes in the surrounding physical environment, and visualized in the immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environment. We consider the Body Architectures project to serve as mechanisms for augmenting the body in relation to the virtual architecture. These wearable devices serve to bring a hyper-awareness to our senses, as closed-loop cybernetic systems that utilize 'digitized' biometric and environmental data through the use of 3D scanning technologies and cloud point models, virtual reality visualization, sensing technologies, and actuation. The design of Body Architectures relies on hybrid design, transdisciplinary collaborations, to explore new possibilities for wearable body architectures that evolve human-machine-environment interactions, and create hyper awareness of the temporal, atmospheric qualities that make up our experience of space, as 'sensorial envelopes' (Lally 2014).

summary In the context of data-driven culture, built space still maintains low responsiveness and adaptability. Part of this reality lies in the low resolution of live information we have about the behavior and condition of surfaces and materials. This research addresses this issue by exploring the development of a deformation-sensing composite membrane material system following a bottom-up approach and combining various technologies toward solving related technical issues—exploring conductivity properties of graphene and maximizing utilization within an architecture-related proof-of-concept scenario and a workflow including design, fabrication, and application methodology. Introduced simulation of intended deformation helps optimize the pattern of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) to maximize membrane sensitivity to a specific deformation type while minimizing material usage. Research explores various substrate materials and graphene incorporation methods with initial geometric exploration. Finally, research introduces data collection and machine learning techniques to train recognition of certain types of deformation (single point touch) on resistance changes. The final prototype demonstrates stable and symmetric readings of resistance in a static state and, after training, exhibits an 88% prediction accuracy of membrane shape on a labeled sample data-set through a pre-trained neural network. The proposed framework consisting of a simulation based, graphene-capturing fabrication method on stretchable surfaces, and includes initial exploration in neural network training shape detection, which combined, demonstrate an advanced approach to embedding intelligence.

summary Heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system plays a key role in shaping the built environment. The effective and efficient HVAC operations not only achieve energy savings but also create a more comfortable environment for occupant indoors. Since current HVAC systems with fixed schedules cannot guarantee the operation with high energy efficiency and provision of comfortable thermal environment for occupants, it is of great importance to develop new paradigm of HVAC system framework, especially in the open-plan office environment so that everyone could work under their preferred thermal environment. Moreover, compared to environment-related factors to thermal comfort, sensing systems for occupant-related factors such as clothing insulation, metabolic rate, skin temperature have not had standardized yet and most of sensing systems for occupant-related factors may either result in privacy issue or are too intrusive. Hence, it is necessary to develop a new non-intrusive and less private sensing framework for monitoring individual thermal comfort in real-time. Therefore, this paper proposes an integrative comfort-based personalized cooling system with the operation of the centralized systems in office buildings. The results show that such integrative and interactive HVAC system for workplaces has advantages over thermal comfort improvements and energy savings.

summary This paper presents a methodology to implement data-driven thinking in the context of urban design. We conducted a 7-day workshop with international students from landscape design and architecture backgrounds, with the objective of designing an experimental setup to measure real-time urban spaces, immediate environment, and body responses. The goal of the workshop was to expose participants to data-driven thinking through experimental design, multi-sensor data collection, data analysis, visualization, and insight generation. We made use of mixed methods, including validated pre- and postquestionnaires, and content analyses of the visualizations and results generated by the participants. The evidence suggest that the workshop resulted in an increase in participants’ knowledge about measuring, visualizing and understanding data of the surrounding built environment.

title Development of a hybrid behavioural and thermal adaptive building envelope

summary This study focuses on the design of behavioural mechanisms for a hybrid informed adaptive envelope. Based on a full-scale experimental demonstrator, including a material responsive and a sensor–processing–actuation adaptive system, quantitative and qualitative methods are applied to identify, describe and study behavioural modes of the adaptive envelope. Through sensor data values and observations, the study finds that the adaptive response patterns are best based on subjective, human-mapped sensations, rather than prescribed environmental comfort, numeric-based sensor values. Those adaptive response patterns should account for change in tempi of the environment, occupier and envelope to establish advanced cause and effect relations, beyond generic thermal comfort performance metrics.

summary Designing the acoustic conditions of the built environment we live in is fundamental to improving our daily life. However, architects and designers still know very little about the way buildings perform in terms of sound. In order to facilitate the comprehension, and therefore the design of acoustic solutions, it is here proposed a methodology for the investigation of existing architectural spaces. The paper discusses a low-cost setup and computational methodology to create an advanced mapping of spaces with the goal of supporting custom design solutions. A case study is used to apply and compare the sensitivity of the proposed approach with professional equipment. The results show that portable systems can be a viable way to understand how our spaces perform in terms of sound, and encourage the diffusion of performance-driven acoustics design.

summary With fast development of new technologies built environment transitioned from a silent background of activities performed by users to another participant of those activities. Agency of interactive architecture is based on interpretation of input data, like users’ actions, their response to the spatial agency, data from environment or other actors, and changing its performance accordingly. Architectural components, environmental conditions and people are all treated as agents and closely correspond to Actor-Network Theory (ANT). This theory generally aims to reveal the complexities of socio-technological world. ANT incorporates a principle of generalized symmetry, it means that human and nonhuman (artifacts, organization structures, etc.) actors are incorporated into the same conceptual framework and assigned equal level of agency. By analysis of the agency of Interactive Architecture through ANT the paper provides insight on social role of this new emerging type of space and its influence on other participants on socio-technological relationship.

summary The built environment is known to affect human health and wellbeing. Yet, architecture does not respond to our bodies or our minds. It tends to be static, ignoring the human occupant, their mood, behaviors, and emotions. There is evidence that this monotony of average space is harmful to human health. Additionally, differences in gender, race and cultural conditions vary the perception of and preferences for temperature and color. To improve the psychosomatic relationship with architectural spaces, there arises the necessity for it to have a greater range of spatial reactivity and better support for personalized thermoregulation and aesthetics. This paper proposes an architecture that operates like a mood-ring, one that creates rich feedback between architecture and occupant towards individualized reactivity and expression. [Sentient Concrete] ([Image 1]) is a prototype of a thermochromically treated concrete panel that is thermally actuated by embedded electromechanical systems and can dynamically produce localized thermally reactive responses. It serves as a test case for outlining further research agendas and possible design frameworks for psychosomatic architecture.

Physician Michio Kaku imagined the future of architects will be relying heavily on Augmented Reality technology (Kaku, 2015). Augmented reality technology is not a new technology and has been evolving rapidly. In the last three years, the technology has been applied in mainstream consumer devices (Coppens, 2017). This opened up possibilities in every aspect of our daily lives and it is expected that this will have a great impact on every field of consumer's technology in near future, including design and fabrication. What is the future of design and making? What kind of new digital fabrication paradigm will emerge from inevitable technological development? What kind of impact will this have on the built environment and industry? FlowMorph is a research project developed in the Bartlett School of Architecture, B-Pro AD with the collaboration of the authors and students as a 12 month MArch programme, we developed a unique design project trying to answer these questions which will be introduced in this paper.

summary Advances in computational design and robotic building methods have the potential to enable architects to author more sustainable, efficient, and geometrically varied systems that shape our built environment. To fully harness this potential, the inherent relationship of design and building processes requires a fundamental shift in the way we design and how we build. High degree of customization in architectural projects and constantly changing conditions of construction environments pose significant challenges for the implementation of automated construction machines. Beyond traditional, human-inspired, industrial robotic building methods, we present a distributed robotic system where the robotic builders are designed in direct relationship with the material and architecture they assemble. Modular, collaborative, single axis robots are designed to utilize standardized timber struts as a basic building material, and as a part of their locomotion system, to create large-scale timber structures with high degrees of differentiation. The decentralized, multi-robot system uses a larger number of simple machines that collaborate in teams to work in parallel on varying tasks such as material transport, placement, and fixing. The research explores related architectural and robotic typologies to create timber structures with novel aesthetics and performances.

summary In an increasingly connected world where computers are everywhere, surrounding us in embedded small portable devices, appliances and inside buildings, implementing these interconnected and embedded computers have now become common practice in the design of smart spaces and intelligent environments of today. Digital information is constantly being collected and distributed by a network of digital devices communicating with users and vice versa. New behaviors and activities that may have not been considered before in the design of architectural building types are now commonly found in public and private spaces throughout the world. In an attempt to explore and experiment with the concept of interplay between digital and physical environments, an option studio was proposed to 4th year architecture students to develop a new type of augmented architecture that corresponds to changes in human social behavior due to digital technologies. Five pilot projects are presented with experiments conducted to question three social activities commonly found in everyday lives using Arduino prototypes installed in real physical locations. The prototypes were then used as a basis for the development of large-scale projects proposed as augmented architecture.

summary Encompassing a series of experiments with atmospheric scenography the following paper maps out the relationships between different materials and energetic flows as part of a spatial design. These investigations emanate from the basis that poetic relationships between material and immaterial processes can induce new meaning to the ways we inhabit our environment. In diffusing the boundaries between states of matter in the environment and the perceiver, the unfolding atmospheric processes enacted here function as perceptual amplifiers for transformations on scales that are usually not sensually accessible. The focus shifts from the concrete to the in-between. The visualization and enaction of flows that make up our surroundings suggest a greater involvement of oneself with the environment.1 Through these experiments we demonstrate 1) how spatial continuity can be achieved in relating attributes of dynamic behavior of water, vapor, air, sound, and light to significances in space; 2) that the indifferent role of the human perceiver is challenged in making their impact and responsiveness to the environment part of the spatial composition itself; and 3) how the expressive qualities of atmospheric variables can be used to experience layers of meaning in spaces, that are usually not comprehensible (such as ecological dimensions of water use).
